The pound sign (#) is musical notation for a "sharp" note, they are the black keys on a piano. It's a matter of preference, but I really enjoy the musical chords they produce, as they produce a particular sound that you don't get from natural notes (the white keys).
Fun fact: it's sometimes called an octothorpe.
Plus the musical sharp sign is technically a different symbol (♯) but isn't available on a typical keyboard so the regular symbol (#) is used instead when typing.
[You are technically correct, the best kind of correct!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hou0lU8WMgo)
I was on mobile at the time and decided not to bother with it. Thank you for adding it on, and also for the fun fact!
In my experience, it's either like this, or they ask you to rebuild a full self driving system for a vehicle... But have it work within a web browser. There is no in between.
I had to write breadth first search in Google Docs. Like… wut? I have been out of school for almost 8 years and no IDE? Was told it didn’t need to be syntactically perfect and then got called out because I forgot to put a semi-colon.
I mean, I was able to do Breadth First Search (even if I said I’d use the one built into Java) by hand because I prepared. The Google Doc part was utterly stupid though. I will say they are a midsize household company name.
I won’t call out companies as I don’t like to burn bridges, nor want to say they haven’t changed from using Google Docs. I did tell them that was utterly ridiculous that they did that and they should really reflect upon why they have people coding in Google Docs. Hopefully, they have changed.
That’s fair. But I think it’s ridiculous to actually have someone try to write an algorithm from memory vs. knowing the tools you have at hand and knowing when to use them. Because let’s be honest, an open source BFS/DFS is going to be optimized better.
Depends on who you work for.
The downside is that if the interview is this easy, you're going to have no one to rely on for training or support and you're going to sink or swim very quickly.
Are you familiar with Go?
Well, it’s difficult at first but as they always say, it’s easier the more you play it.
What?
It’s all black and white, am I right?
Yeah, good, welcome to the team.
<guess I’ll hit that game store on the way home and brush up on it>
Employer: Are you familiar with Rust?
Employee: Yes, I have decent experience with working with rust( My moms cleaning lessons are gonna come in handy… I got this)
This feels sometimes like how other people are hired. But it always seems when I go to interviews it's like "here's a full feature we want you to build from scratch without an IDE, without looking anything up, and without relying on libraries. Write it by hand, it should take you about 6-8 weeks and we'll be changing the requirements as we go to see if you're paying attention also do you have references?"
I wish it was that easy. At one of my recent interviews the lead engineer asked me about an obscure language feature that I'd never heard of from a language I'd been professionally using for the last few years and rejected me seemingly based on that.
I remember when I was first asked the Java question: What is the difference between a **StringBuffer** and a **StringBuilder**?
I didn't know, despite having programmed in Java for 10 years at the time. And for good reason - **StringBuffer** had essentially been deprecated in favour of **StringBuilder** since before I started my career. I never would have, nor *should have* seen code that used **StringBuffer** if my coworkers were competent and up-to-date.
For those curious, the answer is that **StringBuffer** is thread-safe whereas **StringBuilder** is not. They have the same interface and functionality otherwise, and, in fact, **StringBuilder** was designed to be a drop-in replacement.
I've told myself that I wouldn't want to work under someone who asks such stupid questions. And my search for gainful employment in this terrible market continues.
There are definitely companies with non-absurd interview processes. All my friends who got laid off last year found jobs at places that didn't ask stupid questions. I even failed a few interviews this year that did ask the right questions, I just wasn't prepared for them or wasn't selected for other unknown reasons. Still that was last year when it was easier than ever to get hired and now it's this year when it's not. Good news is that companies seem to be getting more responsive and there's been an uptick of recruiters in my inbox, so I'm trying to keep positive.
Many software engineers suck at interviewing. Algorithmic leet code and obscure or opinionated coding or language questions are terrible ways to figure out if a candidate is a good programmer. I hate leet code with a passion. When I was conducting interviews for my last job we used hackerrank questions that were similar to our real world work situations and asked about their experiences.
“Man. I push buttons, I turn dials, I read numbers. Sometimes I make up little stories in my head about what the numbers mean. Like one time I imagined they were a code to get into a vault full of naked women. Man, how cool would that be?
They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I told them I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard.
I know exactly what I'm doing, I just don't know what effect it's going to have. That console over there controls the main power grid, that button there makes a crazy noise, and if you put stuff in that slot sparks come out.”
Basic Is funny, was so good at it my teacher for the project gave me a commendation because he was struggling (was a du subject about science all around. So it’s not necessarily done by a programming teacher).
