Which 10+ year old 'normal' vehicle would you buy in a heartbeat as a daily driver if it was manufactured today?
Posted by bryzzlybear@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 901 comments
I say 'normal' to exclude classic sports cars.
Ask this as my 2009 Accord EX-L V6 just hit 300k km, runs perfectly, and still makes me smile when I get in it. Despite not being great on fuel, outdated styling, and missing some tech that would be nice (Android Auto) I'd probably buy one new today as is out of appreciation for the V6 and reliability over the years.

So 20 years ago was peak BMW, Lexus and Acura era, would be nice to have a few unmolested examples. Obviously E46 330 ci ZHP, E39 540i, Honda Prelude and a million others.
EmbarrassedJury1414@reddit
I have a e90 n54. Bone stock with 60k miles on it. Kind of a pain to work on prolly y I don’t drive it a lot. lol. Actually wanna sell it to get something else. And my 92 Toyota pickup will run forever so I got a backup
Fit-Concentrate8513@reddit
I would buy a 2005 Buick Lesabre with the 3800 engine and get 300k miles with regular oil changes and preventative maintenance!
LostThrowaway316@reddit
I'd buy the CURRENT Nissan Z (essentially a +20 year old car now) if it just cost a freaking reasonable price
argote@reddit
It costs roughly what it's always cost when adjusted for inflation.
Lack240sx@reddit
Not really. 34k for a 370z with a lsd, while its 53k for a Z perfomance(lsd). Has inflation really gone up 56% in three years?
argote@reddit
It's been 5/6 model years since the 370Z was offered, not 3.
Also you're comparing different trims. Either do base-to-base or nismo-to-nismo. The fact that the LSD was removed from the more based trims, while notable, means you can't really compare one to another.
2020 Nissan 370Z Pricing:
Lack240sx@reddit
The sport and performance ARE the comparable trims.
2020 370 / 2022 Z(2 years btw)
Base: 370 30,090 / Z 42,970 / 42.8% increase
Sport/Perfomance: 33,820 / 52,970 56.6% increase
Nismo: 45,790 / 65,750 / 43.6% increase
Ombortron@reddit
True, but A) wages have fallen behind inflation, harder than usual B) it doesn’t help that the car is really only a marginally refreshed version of a very old platform (which would be more acceptable at a lower price)
10000Didgeridoos@reddit
Wages have caught up with inflation as of like 2 years ago. Stop spreading this Trumpaganda myth.

average buying power is down by a lot and they making far less new Z compared to old so hello ADM on top
Odd-Refrigerator-425@reddit
My local dealer has 4 of 'em, roughly all at least 5% off MSRP as advertised on their website.
Car and Driver even just wrote a new article saying "It's time to reconsider the Z" largely on account of dealers realizing how hard these things are to move:
srsbsnssss@reddit
it is possible the situation has changed on the ground in the last 60 days, esp with blow after blow bad news of nissan
TurboFucked@reddit
There are plenty of Zs available at a discount. I had a friend pick up a base model for 1500 off MSRP.
Also, Nissan is going bankrupt. So there's a distinct possibility that Zs are as cheap as they will ever be.
LostThrowaway316@reddit
It's still a 20 year old car. I'd expect prices from at lest 10 years ago
joe2105@reddit
Even then, talking in today’s market. It would have to cost around $5-7k less than a Supra 3.0 for me to even consider it. That’s how much people love that B58 and styling.
TurboFucked@reddit
I have a Supra and my friend just picked up a Z. I paid just under $60, he paid like $43k.
I wouldn't trade him cars, but I do really like the new Z. And they are way cheaper than the people on r/cars would have you believe. Even if you have to have a performance model, there are 5 near by listed for under $50k.
Supras, OTOH, are listed at $61k+ and everyone knows that the car is ending production soon, so they aren't budging on price.
So yeah, real world difference in price is closer to $20k, cheapest-to-cheapest, and $12k for mid-spec to mid-spec. NISMOs are weird in that they are expensive, but sometimes heavily discounted.
Odd-Refrigerator-425@reddit
I'm really curious to see how long it's going to take for this sub to stop with the, "They're all $20K marked up!!!" shit.
All 4 of the ones at my local dealer are at least 5% off MSRP lol
joe2105@reddit
I’m simply talking MSRP. Just looked and a manual performance Z MSRPs for $55,405 and the Supra for $57,385. I can totally see how the Z is going to have discounts but that’s because people like you and I value it waaaay below the Supra. They just can’t compete at the price point they’d like to sell it for. Hell, give me a 240i over it too.

I’d love an actual updated Volvo C30 (2-door sorta sporty hatchback). I love my 2009, but I’d like to have some of the improved safety and convenience features (rearview camera, blind spot detection—was not standard in 2009–, better Bluetooth compatibility—just does calling, music is wired—,etc.).
The EX30 is not really an exact substitute. It’s similar in length, but has 4 doors, is taller and heavier, and is minimalistic to a fault (interior feels less sporty, not as comfy, bad sound system, all info like speed is on the center tablet console, there’s nothing in front of the driver).
I like my car a lot, and just do not get the same joy from looking at the EX30, even though when it was announced I had hoped it would be a reasonable replacement.

expl0dingsun@reddit
I love my 2019 Golf Alltrack (Mk7.5), there’s no car out there that I would want to replace it with for a daily driver, the only vehicles that would come close are absurdly expensive and not worth it.
Only thing I can see doing is getting a truck in the future since I may need a vehicle with a bed and towing capability, but I’d still ideally find a way to keep my wagon. An EV would be nice but way too pricey and not practical for where I live.

Volvo v70r, 6 speed manual wagon making 300hp going to all 4 wheels. There is a mint V60R near me and I am repeatedly tempted to make it happen. My friend has one and in the brief drive we took, it was a hoot. I5 sounds, AWD, and it really moved. But, I just can't justify the price for a 20 year old daily.

Unfortunately, in the States, there are no 1500€ V70Rs. They're pretty rare here, and any V70R you'd want to touch with a 10 foot pole is $10k minimum.

The manual is the tough part. But the T8s make 455HP and 700Nm.
That being said, the Mustang GT had pretty lame power out for a performance V8 in 2006. The GTO had 400hp the same year and the IS350 matched the Mustang GT's power output with a V6. Unlike the Volvo, which had a hi-po turbo five making what other hi-po turbo fours (Evo/STI) were making at the time.

The new Passport has a lot of Element and first-gen Pilot influence (bigger though, obviously). Might wanna check it out
Asteradragon@reddit
It's really not comparable, like other comments pointed out. The element has a super low, plastic floor, pillar less suicide doors, seats that fold up, a split rear tailgate, is super short, the list goes on and on. There hasn't been anything like it since in the US market.
Drzhivago138@reddit
The only small crossover with clamshell doors since has been the ill-fated MX-30.
Asteradragon@reddit
It's not really practical if you have rear seat passengers with any regularity (it's a huge pain getting in and out of the car in crowded parking lots), but for camping and moving things around it's amazing. I can see why no one does it anymore really (besides the MX-30, which was ill-fated for many reasons), but I'm glad the element has it.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Most extended cab pickups have abandoned the clamshells too (if they even offer an extended cab). I think the only ones left as of this year are full-size Fords and the Nissan Frontier.

Anyway, maybe a fluke thing, but it was honestly worse than when my wifes catalytic converter went out on her honda, and basically blocked the exhaust
ongnoi@reddit

I’ve been trying to sell mine for two months and haven’t found a buyer even for asking $1500 (CAD) under what I have into it. raustin33@reddit
Passport isn’t the same idea.
Passport is a 5 seat Pilot with a bit more off-road flavor. It’s a great vehicle.
But the Element is like a 4 passenger mini box truck. It’s built inside like a body on frame truck, super boxy and versatile. Plus they’re small.
If the did bring back the Element, I could see it built on the Passport, though I think they’d still do the CRV platform. If they simply gave us the same formula they’d have a massive hit.
I’ve no idea why it hasn’t happened yet.
I’m currently searching for the best Element SC on the planet to buy and keep.
notquiteworking@reddit
Plus, the rear seats folded up off of the floor! This is what we need for easy loading of big dogs or expensive bikes. To get that mix you need to go into some 1/2 ton trucks or a minivan for the dogs or a cube van for the bikes
I_like_cake_7@reddit
Not really. The Element was CR-V based, the Passport is Pilot based. The Passport is significantly larger and more expensive than the Element was.
xicer@reddit
Isn't the Passport the priciest Honda suv? I thought it was positioned above the Pilot. That doesn't seem to line up with the Element at all. Maybe I'm wrong.
SpecialFX99@reddit
I was thinking s2000 (kids are grown up so DD it's reasonable) but Element might be a better (if less fun) option

I’d buy a 2025 Element if it was exactly the same as it was when discontinued, even adjusted for the idiot market.
geek4hobbies@reddit
Yeah I bought a 2010 Element this year as a snow car and I may get rid of my other car and just keep the Element. It’s a great design, well built and not at all overengineered. If only I could crack the 24mpg barrier.

Rocknthehawk@reddit
Yep. Aside from the front end the body was the same 1994-2011 so parts are plentiful. 98+ was much better with the updated front a arm suspension.

No joke, my Honda Fit has fit a queen sized mattress and an entire park bench in the back on separate occasions. And a whole bureau. I moved every piece of furniture I own with that car. That car comes camping with me.
My fit will be clawed from my cold, dead hands.
guy-anderson@reddit
It's funny how widely it is accepted now that the Honda Fit was the best econobox ever made.
Bassracerx@reddit
It was, but it also was 7 grand more expensive than a nissan versa, chevy sonic, ford fiesta, kia rio/hyundai accent. The honda fit was a great car but not a great value.
guy-anderson@reddit
Where are you getting the 7 grand figure from? They were all like 14-16 grand at the end.
Bassracerx@reddit
The first and second gen fit was 16k starting zero discounts or hagling off the msrp you could get the alternatives mentioned for under 10k out the door
guy-anderson@reddit
I think you are comparing the cost of the sedan versions of these cars to the Fit, which was only offered as a hatchback.
For example, the 2011 Nissan Versa sedan started at $10k, but the cheapest hatchback model's MSRP was $14,380. Only about $700 cheaper than the Fit.
In fact, all of the hatchbacks were priced within a few hundred bucks of each other.
I don't doubt that you could go haggle a Kia Rio5 down a few more thousand bucks, but I think you were arguably getting what you paid for and we are not talking about an insane premium for a Fit.
Bassracerx@reddit
that's just MSRP there were huge incentives on the competition especially from ford, kia, nissan. Honda was sticker price. The honda fit was competing against cars above it's class in it's price range. for what you paid for a fit you could buy a mazda 3 or a focus or a sentra. it was very expensive to import the fit from japan and it was not a good value. You paid a premium to drive the honda. Honda eventually resolved this by building the fit in mexico starting in 2014 and sales of that generation picked up, however the HRV was more profitable which was also made in the same plant and honda now exclusively makes the hrv in that plant.

We had one for a year or so before it was apparent it didn’t hold us well enough. (3 full sized adults, one 10yo, and one 4yo with a car seat. Without the third adult (MIL) it might’ve been enough but the 10yo was outgrowing the backback seat.
It was a hoot to drive. I’d give it to my now-19yo if we still had it. I’d get another one w a stick shift for sure.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
I don’t know if it’s an issue with the 2 Mazda 5s I grew up in or it’s a more common phenomenon, but the seats they put in those are incredibly uncomfortable. There’s also a weird plasticky odor that never goes away.
Your kids might not have AC, but that’s not really the point. If you’re cold, you’re wearing too many clothes, if you’re hot, you’re not wearing enough. And if it’s not running, they can roll down the rear windows, but not all the way.
The parents who wanted their kids to be comfy were all driving Odysseys or Suburbans.

Datsun 280Z. Terrific fun, but a pile of rust. If they had made a more rust proof version, I never would have sold mine. Disclaimer; I purchased it used, but from what I know, they were all prone to rust. Still, 125mph, great handling, a/c, mine had Recaro buckets, and a 5 speed. Took it for random rides whenever I could.
2nd choice, my 928. Basically a faster version of the Z. Of course for the price it had better be.
3rd '66 Mustang GT (not the Shelby either). Another 125 mph car, decent enough handling for 1966. Also a rare one with a/c. I put 44,000 miles on it the first year I had it. Kept it for 8 years.
Today, I have a 1998 LIncoln Mark 8, because I have so much arthritis I can't even work on my cars, and needed something that any corner machanic would work on. 2nd car is a 1992 Cherokee that I give to my mother for her 67th birthday/retirement. 3rd is my 2008 Expedition, awaiting the deadly R valve train problems to show up.
All good cars, so far on major engine work needed, but I suspect the Expy 's 3 valve head will eventually be a problem.

Chevrolet SS 2013-2017. The markdowns at dealerships towards the end of their run on them were pretty substantial. If only I was making money back then instead of being in HS/College…
HiTork@reddit
Like the 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO, GM felt the SS wouldn't sell well enough in Canada and decided not to bring it up here. I don't blame them as I believe sales of the related Pontiac G8 in Canada were dismal at the end, with sales numbers only in the hundreds.
GM Canada Fleet's website at one point listed the related Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle as an offering, but I don't think any Canadian agencies took up those.
Outland1972@reddit
Beautiful. I bought a ‘14 brand new. Later added upgraded exhaust, cold air intake and had it Dyno-tuned at a local shop specializing in GM performance. Picked up an additional 70HP and sounded rowdy as hell when you got into it. When I worked at Chevy, the SS sedan was really being given away. V8 stick shift fully loaded for like 35 grand. I should’ve bought one when I work there year ago when I was looking for a V8 sedan the used market was asking MSRP for the SS sedan with 100,000 miles.
lowstrife@reddit
They were giving away Pontiac G8's (same car) during the 2008 crisis right before Pontiac died too. For a long time the GXP's stayed $35,000 cars, they never depreciated even as the miles grew. I think the SS coming out with magride finally put the pin in their values.
Never understood why the values for them were so weak. Dynamically they were excellent, but maybe buyers didn't want to deal with Chevy interiors?
JustACarNut77@reddit
Love my G8 wish I could buy a new one. But I don't ever plan on selling mine. It's an 09 Stryker blue metallic GT
Spicywolff@reddit
When I was at Chevy, its lack of sales, stem from being an awkward position.
People who want to sports car got the Camaro SS or the Corvette. The market for a V8 manual with LSD just wasn’t there. Most of van drivers were willing to pay the premium for the SS or take the fuel mileage hit.
The SS sedan and the black wings are holding crazy value now.
russsl8@reddit
I got a G8 GT for $29k out the door in 2008, however that was with an employee discount at the time. Got my 2016 SS sedan for $41k out the door on a red tag event right before the stop sale.
Both were great cars and I miss both.
Spicywolff@reddit
I remember the red tag event. I used that to get my Chevy spark lol. Got it for silly OTD price, can’t remember exact amount.
I bought a Cruze diesel since we had it marked down so much. Great highway MPG but James May boring lol. I was one of the few young people that thought “let me buy a sensible and economical car to start my life with “ in exchange, it was quite boring

Ha I lusted over these so bad for years throughout college and my first job too. benzguy95@reddit
These and the G8 are “cars I wish I could’ve bought new” but noooo, I had to be in middle school when the G8’s came out and had just started working and was in college when the SS’s were new 😔
BetterThanAFoon@reddit
They went on sale during GM sales specials. Car inventory was moving slow back then. So GM had a manufacturer special of 20% off most models in Jun-Jul of 2016. Then they had at least two more sales months in 2017.
I felt really lucky with my 2016. GM gave me 20% and the dealership tossed in another 5% off. I had both options (Sunroof and spare tire) so that made her a $37k car. I still got her but someday soon she will be sold.

However, if I was willing to spend the money for this class of car, I would buy a late 90’s NSX after the refresh with the 6 speed but before they removed the pop up headlights. That might be my favorite car ever.

MischaFoo@reddit
Ive had my is200 sportcross manual for almost 15 years - the transmission has a distinct whine, the gears are pretty short but i have to admit its the most reliable car ive ever had and most likely ever will. Over those 15 years all i had to do besides regular maintenance was a single coil on cilinder 5 and fix some rust on the sills. The engine has really bad performance to mpg ratio (the e46 equivalent feels much better to drive and get 10-20% better mpg) but its so smooth! Bought it for qn equivalent of around 4k usd back then and could probably sell it for around 2.5k npw.

AWD Toyota Matrix
srsbsnssss@reddit
only if it has 2zz
TurboFucked@reddit
Honestly, the Matrix sucks mated to the 2ZZ. It's just too damn heavy for an engine that like 100-110ft-lbs off of lift (below 6200). The 1ZZ has less power, but it makes 130ft-lbs throughout most of the powerband.
Also, Toyota detuned the 2ZZ in Vibe/Matrix applications. Which is a double-fuck since the gearing in the 6-speed is designed for with an 8200rpm redline, so the lower redline in the Vibtrix means that you have less power, and spend time between shifts waiting to hit lift again.
The engine works in the Celica and Elise because those are really light cars (2500lb & 1800lbs). The Vibtrix is 2700-3000, but since it's also a four door hatchback, it means you're often driving around with more heavy stuff in it.

Few_Highlight1114@reddit
Probably that they're more rare. Idk if they actually are but they certainly feel like it. You can find a clean c5 pretty easy, not true for a TA or SS.
Soggy_Head_4889@reddit
It's easier to find a clean c5 because corvettes have pretty much always been priced out of the young guy demographic that drives them hard and doesn't care for them as much. IIRC the average age of a new corvette purchaser is ~60-65 whereas for the mustang (comparable segment to trans am) it's in the mid-40s.
Active-Device-8058@reddit
Oooh this is a fun one. I had an LT1 WS6 that I also got rid of. I... sort of regret it, and also don't. Not even 'memory dyno,' it was properly quick for a big RWD analog V8. And god damn that torque + 6speed was addictive. But everything else about it was the epitome of that late 90s/00s GM. The problem is that I don't think they're worth what it would cost to get back into one right now... But yeah, really cool cars that still catch my eye. They're under-remembered.

10000Didgeridoos@reddit
I can tell you what the previous gen was like at least. Had one from 40k miles to about 110k when a deer killed it.
Pros: Styling was like a WRX had sex with a mid-2000s Audi A4, same performance as a WRX with the insurance premium cost of a normal Subaru Legacy and a much nicer interior, stock stereo was decent for the time, loaded with features for the era; powerful acceleration with like a 5.3-5.4 second 0-60 with a clutch dump from 3500 RPM. Good in snow and rain as much as dry pavement.
Cons: Fuel economy was abysmal (17/24) on 93 octane at that; it ate through wheel bearings rapidly (I replaced 3 or 4 in total); passenger seat footwell was really shallow and the passenger seat was not height adjustable; small trunk; backseat only had legroom for children or really small adults and was low to the ground; too much body roll stock; 3000+ RPM at 75+ MPH on the highway; stock tune was prone to running lean in high gears and low throttle; stock shifter had long throws and was too rubbery, nothing like the 6 speed the spec.B and STi had at the time
It had an old school turbo experience with like nothing happening until about 2500 RPM-3500 RPM and ripped through mountain roads. I loved it for the time even with its flaws. Everyone thought it was German (BMW or Audi) lol and it got random compliments for being "fancy" all over the place in parking lots and gas stations. It was actually a good looking Subaru, rare eh? The responding tow truck wrecker driver said "...aw mann, that was a pretty car" when he got out. The cop said from the back he thought it was a BMW. Wild unsolicited reactions that made it feel special. RIP queen.
But ultimately the Audi A3 2.0t I have now, a decade newer design to be fair, is similar size and drives much tighter than it did with a much better transmission (DSG, no stick available). The Legacy GT forums are full of engine rebuild threads unfortunately as these motors tended to go right around 110-130k miles with weak spots being ringlands, and a stupid inline banjo bolt oil filter in the turbo oil feed in the 05-07 models. I think I had to fix a vacuum hose leak at some point as well.

Any Accord from 1990 and up. I daily drive a 1993 Accord and it's a blast. Parts are über cheap, they're so easy to work on... Nothing breaks on them haha
I'd also buy any Subaru 2000 and up with an EJ or an EZ except the Tribeca which is a piece of shit. Subaru are reliable as fuck and I think they're the easiest cars to work on.
Any Hyundai Accent/Kia Rio or the older Elantras with timing belts. Bulletproof cars.
Older CR-V with the B20 engines.
I despise everything Toyota/Lexus and Mazda, no matter the year. Nightmare to work on in the rust belt.

First gen Ford Superduty 7.3 diesel 4x4 with a stick shift. Big, lazy truck that just gets things done and doesn’t make enough power to hurt itself. The sound of a 7.3 idling just sets me at ease, the crackle of those injectors just gives it something the modern diesels don’t have.
AKADriver@reddit
My daily driver is already 13 years old and I'd take it over any new car in its class, such that anything like it even exists, in the US market - a 2012 Mazda2.
I've owned it since almost new and it's still almost as good as it was. I installed an Android Auto head unit in 2020 and it thus has exactly the amount of technology I want in a car.
I love every time I get to go to a less rich county and see that they can get better cars than we do, at least as far as practical small cars go.

You can get a radio that has Android Auto (and so much more) for less than a single payment on a new car. The idea that you have to lose out on tech because you drive an old car is a myth. The only thing you miss are driver assists which are more in the way than anything else if you ask me. Even then the aftermarket is catching up, I wouldn't be surprised if someone makes a full self driving retrofit kit within a few years of factory systems being viable.
For that reason, I'll take pretty much anything. But if I had my choice of any old vehicle to buy brand new right now it would be a Cadillac Fleetwood, or an equivalent full size rear drive "boat" of a car, something made for driving long distances in absolute comfort.

Not with that attitude. Who cares if it makes sense. Have fun. I have an idea of making an early 90s escort hatch with a hybrid powertrain from a newer Ford. But it’s a legendarily safe car that is very well packaged, with a well-sorted and reliable powertrain (3.2L or the 3.8L) that will last forever with proper maintenance. Great interior with outrageously comfy seats, no big screens, and tactile controls. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t. The design has aged really well; my 2007 still gets compliments. That was my first new car,a drove well but was spending more time at the repair department than on the road. AC problems that took a year and maybe 10 appointments to find, speedometer needle fell within 1 month, seat ratlle, loose shifter problem, water leaking in the trunk. But fun
davidj911@reddit
Yeah it was definitely a mid-90s Ford.
_night_flight_@reddit
I had one of those, great car until all the issues started. Mostly the problems were with unintended increase in RPM when sitting at a stop light in neutral. Also had the AC fail multiple times, the water pump go out and the speedometer stop working all while under 100k miles. I haven't seen any Contours of any type on the road in years, but I still see Civics, Corollas and even Saturn SL's from that era, so I guess all the Contours died from wiring harness issues or something.

I love this body style, known as an S197. I am slowly putting the high-performance parts on this car that I installed on the other car (my insurance company allowed me to remove them before the car was taken away). I would buy another car in the S197 body style (2005-2009) if it was being re-released as new today. It’s a great daily driver and a show car. My other choice would be my 1968 Mustang GTA. Late 90's Chrysler Town & Country. I had a couple of them and they were, in some ways, fantastic. I drive a Honda Odyssey now, and a 15 years older Chrysler van had bigger seats, more comfortable seats, a smoother ride, a quieter ride, traction control that actually works, more storage, better HVAC controls, better rear HVAC controls, better HVAC in general, better stereo, better stereo controls. Basically in any and every aspect related to comfort and convenience, turn of the century Chrysler vans are better than new Honda vans.
There's a flip side, of course, Honda vans break down vastly less often, and so save thousands of dollars in repair costs over the life of the van. And it's hard to put a price/value on knowing that your vehicle will start and will get you there. Every time.

But that was the last year of that model line I believe because they changed the styling to this really ugly angular thing for the new Honda Civic’s? Same with my 2009 Daihatsu Materia. Own it since 10 years. 2010-2011 Daihatsu stopped selling Cars in Europe, so i had no chance to find a newer version of my car.

My 2014 F31 BMW 335d Xdrive. It's about to hit 300k km this year. I love the car, have tried newer cars from other manufacturers and prefer my "old" one. It's plenty powerful, it has physical buttons and nice physical dials, it doesn't weigh two metric tons, it's still relatively small size while remaining practical. And looking at todays BMW designs it seems to be one of the last good looking ones.

A K series heavy duty pickup. To have a new build of something simple and durable would be nice as cars become increasingly complex and built as commodities. Assuming we can still buy gas in a few decades, I expect 90s pickups (that haven’t rusted away) to be some of the few ICEs still running
