My Asus Rog 5s has this. It's called scheduled charging, and it asks you to update this based on your sleeping habits. It also allows me to set the maximum to 90% or 80%. More importantly it allows me to skip them every time with a super accessible notification.

My iPhone 14 Plus has this. It charges first to 80% and leaves it there and only finalises the charge to 100% about 1-2h before the morning alarm.

Because I still don't have the option to charge my battery to 80%. That's what I want to wake up to, on most days, to preserve the battery. Don't ramp it up to 100% an hour before the alarm is set. It's just that simple.

I believe Sony introduced their version of adaptive charging on their X phones around 2016. In 2020, adaptive charging became available on Android phones with the release of Android 11. It works by charging your phone to 80% and holding it there until an hour before you normally unplug it, and then it tops it off to 100%. The Android 15 release in 2024 added a second option called charge optimization, which limits the charge to 80%.

Have you tested it out? Let your phone’s battery go down during the day, set your alarm for when you wanna get up, then set an alarm on a different device right before the original alarm on the original phone. If you wake up 10 minutes before the intended time and find that your phone is at 100%, it’s working as intended. If not, it’s not.

I've woke up some mornings and my phone hasn't been charged to 100%, typic for a weekend when I don't have an alarm set but I've gotten up earlier than normal as my gf has slept in for work and needs help with the dog. Based on the wording alone, I'm just gonna go out on a limb and assume that the phone doesn't do it based on alarms' full stop.

Unless I'm misreading your comment what you said happens supports that it's based on alarm, yet your last sentence says the opposite... If it's based on alarm and the weekdays you use an alarm it's at 100% sounds like it's based on alarm. If it doesn't work on weekend y when you didn't have alarm AND got up early to take care of dog this again supports that it's alarm based...

Not really, because I've also woken up and my phone not be at 100 when my alarms gone off. I'm assuming it isn't related to an alarm because of the way they've worded it in the settings and I'm assuming someone's tried to be clever and use a bit of code and some AI to work out what typical usage is instead of just implementing an easier option

I have a pixel as well and love the idea of adaptive charging. Unfortunately I've worked night shift for the past 5 years and it has never "adapted" to my schedule. Even though I use consistent alarms and plug my phone in around the same time most nights. Occasionally I'll have reason to sleep/set my alarm for a more typical time and then it happily turns on adaptive charging. The system still has some kind of constraint to it for the hours its will to turn it on. It would be rather nice if I could manually set something, or if it could just finally learn my schedule.

I think that we ought to have a "battery life prolongation" option which stops the battery charging when you reach an 80% charge level, and shuts the phone off when you drop to a 20% charge level. You ought to be able to override this setting when essential, but 80/20 gives the optimum life for lithium-base rechargeable batteries over the long term.

That’s not available on iOS. You can’t set an 80% charge limit. The iOS option is to have the phone wait at 80% until it thinks you’re about to unplug it, and only then will it go the rest of the way up to 100%. However, this only works for consistent overnight charging. If you charge sporadically, there’s no way for the phone to predict accurately.

If you're willing to tinker, on rooted Android, there is a magisk battery module which has the exact feature you're describing. The stock Android version doesn't turn the phone off, but with the module you can have the phone shut off at any percent you want and charge up to any percent you want and have it stop charging at that limit and pull power directly from the wall to ease the battery strain.

This exists since (at least) the zenfone 7. The charging notification has a bypass button. There's also a bypass for fast charge. Asus has a lot of future-thinking clever R&D in their products. Android OS could implement these features into the base OS if the features weren't behind the degressive gate of legality. The downside with harvesting and implementing the these features (for companies) is the lessened competition (and therefore a flattened playinng field for all devices) due to lack of exclusivity. The upside (for consumers) is we'd get crazy-great futuristic features right now, for free. But that's none of my business. *sips tea*

If you have a samsung phone, you can do this using routines. Personally I have it set to go into airplane mode below 20% instead of turn off since restarting will only use more battery. This is disabled if google maps is on for obvious reasons.

The first part already exists and you can make the second part happen yourself. I do kinda wish they made it so that when it showed 100%, it was actually on 80. Because then it would extend the battery life, without having the mental issue of being like "well I don't want to waste 20% every time I charge my phone." On Pixels at least, Android can be set to charge to 80% if you wish. I've tried adaptive charging a few times, with an alarm set to 1 hour after I'm going to wake up. The idea is I want to wake up with the battery at 90%. Most of the time, even an hour earlier, I wake up with it at 100%. So now I only charge when I'm awake and try to keep my battery between 45% and 90% at almost all times.

Fair point. The argument is prolonged battery life in capacity over duration for performance management. The manufacturers do not want lag on their phones and that means an immediate draw of power so you have the greater benefit to the many. It's a trade off.

You have to root an android phone to change the charging settings, but you can do all of this with a chargie. You can set the percentage it charges to and from what percentage to start charging and what time of the day/week it should be fully charged.
