It's not competing against them though. It's the only ev muscle car, people will buy it because it actually looks cool and will be fairly priced over those models.
The new charger starts at $62k, and with the new production I'd expect crazy dealer markups/options and low inventory. Imo the new charger is not going to be like previous camaros/mustangs/challengers where dealers can actually pump them out the door and build the brand with. People are going to walk into a dealership, see 1 or 2 with a price tags north of $80k and then quickly walk out while trying to avoid the salesmen desperately attempting to sell a Dodge Journey.
It sticks around as long as people buy it, ultimately. And at 55K\~ units a year at the going rate... that's tough. Which makes it obvious why Ford is seeking some kind of platform mate to spread the cost and marginally increase volume for the platform.
55k units seems pretty solid no? Corvette sells 30-40k a year and GM looks to be happy with spending money there … though don’t ever trust GMs decisions
Right, feels like 10-15k+ units is pretty adequate for a somewhat niche but still mass-produced model. No one is going to buy Mustangs like F150s or Explorers.
30 to 40K for a mid-engined almost-supercar (in looks at the very least) corvette is an awesome proposition. Not really comparable to the muscle car that is the Mustang
The Mustang GTD is 250K+, waaaay different than the standard ones. Also it was not the all time record. More like #11 on the all time production car leaderboard. Still impressive nonetheless.
Yeah, but the majority of those 55K Mustang sales are marginally equipped Ecoboost Mustangs with relatively low margins... Hell, half of them are probably rental fleet sales.
And put it this way... The Jeep Gladiator gets constant articles and posts about how it's a failure and could be discontinued but it moves a comparable volume and shares vast amounts of parts and R&D with the Wrangler.
Why wouldn't a model with much less parts sharing and unique production that moves less warrant at least equal concern?
The Corvette also starts at nearly double the price and goes way up from there. I don't think it's comparable. The closest competition to the Mustang has vanished from the market for the reasons of low volume.
Like the Corvette, the Mustang likely earns some grace when it comes to sales as a sort of "halo" car. I know it's much slower and more affordable than your typical halo performance car, but I think it's impact on Ford's brand is somewhat similar given it's history and design.
It also benefited heavily from internal corporate politics, if it ever had to compete fairly with internal competition from Pontiac, Olds, etc, we'd either not be seeing the Corvette today or it would look incredibly different.
I have very little doubt the Mustang is profitable, but I doubt the margins are remotely as good as on, say F150s or Explorers. Similar thing is almost certainly true of the Corvette, and has been for a long time.
Absolutely the trucks make more money per unit. But the Corvette team has always worked to a strict budget to ensure it made money and thus survived the accountants, that's why it was so "cheap" inside for so long. You think they wanted to use the same steering wheel as a Cavalier in the C6, and the same radio as the Sunfire in the C5?
Sure, but that's not really my point. I don't think Ford ever wanted the Mustang (at least the non-EV versions) to be subsidized losses, either. I believe both of these cars can simultaneously be halo cars that don't need to sell like hotcakes AND still be profitable. The "grace" I was talking about didn't extend so far as losing money.
55K annually is awful for any vehicle intended to be a volume seller, which the Mustang arguably falls under. Those numbers would be a best seller if it was the Corvette, which some people are implying here.
Which makes it obvious why Ford is seeking some kind of platform mate to spread the cost and marginally increase volume for the platform.
I remember reading an article back in the late 2010s that speculated the sixth generation Mustang was going to be a tank because the author believed at the time Ford was going to do just this, that is share an existing platform. Since Ford has given up on traditional cars in the North American market to focus primarily on SUVs and trucks, the author thought they were going to use an SUV platform to save money, and there is only so much you can shrink that even if you want to turn it into a two-door coupe/convertible.
This is the second time as well. Hopefully Ford actually continues to improve the car this time. We got the SN197 and the car stayed almost exactly the same until the Camaro and Challenger made their returns to the streets.
Whoever made that list did exactly 0 research. Charger is literally coming out in 2025, 300 and Challenger died in 2023, Bolt models died in 2023, Stinger died in 2023.
I still find it bonkers that Ford have killed off the (typically) perennial best selling car of the UK because it wasn't a crossover. Fiestas will live on in the used market here for decades because they're practically an institution here on the road. But it just seems stupid.
Where are you getting your numbers because apparently the best selling car last year registered 42k sales (the Ford Puma). Funnily enough the Fiesta "replacement".
u/deathschemist and I aren't saying they're selling as many Fiestas as they used to, we're saying they were still selling a significant amount of them. Which for the literal best selling car of all time in the UK even up to a few years ago, it just seems like a knee-jerk to kill it off because something else is marginally outperforming it.
Basically baby with the bathwater. They could have accepted slightly less profit on that model line and people could still buy new Fiestas, but they folded instead.
I may be ever so slightly biased, but my local dealer is using a CLE as a shuttle car right now, and I'm extremely tempted to look into one as my next vehicle. The interior is pretty eye popping.

I just don’t understand. I get that SUVs have become more popular, but there is always a market for small cars and it feels like such a letdown from the car corporations to prioritize profits to this extent
The Chevy Trax, Equinox EV and Buick Envista are well on the way of morphing back into hatchbacks. Sucks they went the other way with the gas Equinox - it should just be the same body as the EV with a gas engine.
What they came up with for a gas Equinox would've made a good GMC Acadia, while that lingers on the old platform for however long. Makes me wonder if they saw Ford Escape vs Bronco Sport sales and panicked.
Something that all cars (Sedans/hatches and many CUVs as well) have is their lower hood height is a significant contributor to survival rates for pedestrian impacts.
Big SUV to big SUV crashes are often pretty safe. But one you mix pedestrians and kids in large SUVs and Trucks with their literal flat slabs for bumpers are statistically far more dangerous.
Now, with that said. RIP to the Chevy Malibu.
I had to take a Malibu fleet car on a 12h drive and it smelled like cigarettes, butts and regret but it fit the car weirdly accurately. And it got me to my location without killing me so that was nice.
I've always been a "sporty' mid sized sedan guy so I absolutely hate that the options are so limited these days, and it's getting worse. The SUC and crossover obsession makes me angry.
Those cars get all of the attention and reinvest never they print money, while the mid-sized sedan offerings often get little to no attention.
The whole small commercial van segment is now dead in the US. Ford is thinking about making a new Transit Connect in Mexico, but probably won't if there are tariffs.
Lots of cars will not be returning to the lineup for many manufacturers. Interesting to see jaguar getting rid of the whole lineup for electric badges. And the camaro won't be back.
Yeah I saw the YouTube videos of people celebrating their voice was heard to bring back a bolt. Now I just want a diesel powered focus wagon for the states. UK gets one. Why can't we?
It should be "Sport Turismo" which is a more of a station wagon or shooting brake variant. I actually love the body style but it's only offered on a fully loaded variant of the car.
They've been rumoring a Camaro or Corvette SUV for years, I'll believe it when I see it. Hell I think the current Blazer was supposed to be a Camaro SUV but they changed the name at the last minute

This isn't a quality inherent to sedans, as hatchbacks and wagons also are good. Cars are good, SUVs aren't.
Mimical@reddit
And it got me to my location without killing me so that was nice.
joeislandstranded@reddit
Kids don’t put posters of crossovers on their walls. ‘Nuff said
EpicLegendX@reddit
One of the reasons people get an SUV is because they’re said to be safer vehicles.
They have to be because they’re more accident prone.
TheCudder@reddit
I've always been a "sporty' mid sized sedan guy so I absolutely hate that the options are so limited these days, and it's getting worse. The SUC and crossover obsession makes me angry.
Those cars get all of the attention and reinvest never they print money, while the mid-sized sedan offerings often get little to no attention.
Skvora@reddit
Rofl, nothing made after 2018 will make it to 2019.
Big-Energy-3363@reddit
Too bad about the Metris, we use two of them in business, dead reliable, zero issues.
Drzhivago138@reddit
The whole small commercial van segment is now dead in the US. Ford is thinking about making a new Transit Connect in Mexico, but probably won't if there are tariffs.
BloodDK22@reddit
Sad to see some of the super cars and coupes go. Im so done with stupid SUVs and four door cars. Coupes are so few and far between now.
Substantial_Heat_550@reddit
I thought Camaro was already dead? Weird…
virus_apparatus@reddit
Mazda pulled that MX-30 fast af.
I’m kinda sad the Rio from Kia is going. It’s grown into a nice small car
gunslanger21@reddit (OP)
Lots of cars will not be returning to the lineup for many manufacturers. Interesting to see jaguar getting rid of the whole lineup for electric badges. And the camaro won't be back.
IndigoMoss@reddit
RIP Alpina B7, what a legend.
Superlolz@reddit
the Bolts never even made it to 2024 lol but they'll be back for 2025
lowcrawler@reddit
Bolts are back in 25? Source?
biggsteve81@reddit
It is the whole reason the Malibu is being discontinued, per the linked article.
gunslanger21@reddit (OP)
Apparently it is.

lowcrawler@reddit
Very cool, thanks for the followup.
terrytek@reddit
I was about to say I thought the bolt was actually coming back bc people actually wanted it and whined when GM announced it was dying the first time.
gunslanger21@reddit (OP)
Yeah I saw the YouTube videos of people celebrating their voice was heard to bring back a bolt. Now I just want a diesel powered focus wagon for the states. UK gets one. Why can't we?
Lower_Kick268@reddit
GM announced it not that long again, they're coming back with a new generation of them, to bring them to the modern day with tech.
Michelanvalo@reddit
This is last year's list and doesn't match the article at all
asbyo@reddit
Also (not mentioned) the Nissan GT-R
kylesisles1@reddit
Based on the accuracy of this list, they might as well have included the Honda S2000.
tomegerton99@reddit
I find it interesting how they mention the Porsche Panamera Sport Turbo, Porsche has this year released a new generation of Panamera lol
KPexEA@reddit
It should be "Sport Turismo" which is a more of a station wagon or shooting brake variant. I actually love the body style but it's only offered on a fully loaded variant of the car.
BerniesMittens@reddit
What does Chevy and GM even sell anymore then?
ChestOk2429@reddit
Oh no, not the Chiron... I was waiting for the 2026 to finally buy one
mandatoryclutchpedal@reddit
Is that site one of those sites that scrapes other sites and uses chatgpt to rewrite for content?
Are there actual auto journalist there?
rpfloyd@reddit
hmmm
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
Half of these are simply being replaced by a subsequent model.
LionSlicer13@reddit
RIP R8. RIP F8, now Ferrari’s whole lineup is whack
CapControl@reddit
Killing the Fiesta is still the dumbest thing Ford could do. Especially as their sales in EU with their shitty electrics is at an all time low
MartiniPolice21@reddit
This is how I find out they cancelled the TT!?
a_modal_citizen@reddit
Thank goodness... That one was keeping me up at night.
stilhere@reddit
All Camaros are gone, not just the turbo. What is this? Some ChatGPt shit?
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Seems like it. It's a garbage article by a substandard website. The 300 and Maxima were killed off a year ago.
OvONettspend@reddit
The bolt was a great car. GM loves to kill off their good stuff for seemingly no reason
Tbro100@reddit
They're bringing it back for 2025, it'll now be on the Ultium platform.
OvONettspend@reddit
Shits gonna cost an extra 15k for no reason over the outgoing model
Tbro100@reddit
It's set to slot under the Equinox EV, which starts at $35k before the tax credit. The 23 Bolt started at $31k.
OvONettspend@reddit
wtf I could have sworn the bolt was in the mid 20s
Tbro100@reddit
That was after the tax credit. The Equinox also enters mid to high 20s after the tax credit.
Superlolz@reddit
That’s a very optimistic assumption
__-__-_-__@reddit
it did. idk what that guy is talking about. i think maybe a higher trim.
Natedoggsk8@reddit
If it says Chevy Camaro Turbo does that mean there’s a different Camaro still?
gunslanger21@reddit (OP)
So there is a z/28 version and a chevy camaro suv??? It's odd. Like the mustang mach e I think.
https://www.caranddriver.com/chevrolet/camaro-suv
Lower_Kick268@reddit
There is no Camaro SUV.
justin251@reddit
They are talking about the Blazer with its camaro-esque styling.
gunslanger21@reddit (OP)
Plans to roll out in 2025. Did you not read the article?
Lower_Kick268@reddit
They've been rumoring a Camaro or Corvette SUV for years, I'll believe it when I see it. Hell I think the current Blazer was supposed to be a Camaro SUV but they changed the name at the last minute
terrytek@reddit
The camaro should just die with dignity instead of being slapped onto another generic SUV that has no ties to its heritage.
gunslanger21@reddit (OP)
I agree. I think the darkhorse put a nail in the coffin for other muscle cars. They should all take a break and come back redesigned in about 3 years.
Cost_Additional@reddit
Man, if I had the money for a V10 R8.
NotoriousCFR@reddit
So Maserati makes what now? Nothing?
Also why do I feel like I've been reading about the Camaro being discontinued for at least 3 years now
Manafont-@reddit
I feel like I have read some variation of this exact same list for 2 years+
