Booked a flight to Budapest with no plan
Posted by panth3r_@reddit | budapest | View on Reddit | 17 comments
Hello guys,
I've booked a last minute flight to Budapest and was wondering apart from the top 10 trip advisor recommendations, is there anything you guys would recommend in its stead ? I don't speak the language, would it be difficult getting around? Also, how to pay for public transport, is it good option to get around ? Do you need a card or something or can you pay with visa ?
I want to have a good time here, maybe meet some people so appreciate your recommendations.
Cheers.

You can buy your ticket online using Budapest Go mobile application but I suggest to just buy a weekly pass.
I would definitely check the Mezopotamian exhibition if it is open in the museum of fine arts (szépművészeti múzeum).
You can get by using English, but having a Google lens or Microsoft Translator would definitely help.
If you have further questions feel free to ask.

Can you buy a weekly pass on Budapest go ?
redikarus99@reddit
I just checked. There is a ticket for 72 hours (5500 HUF), but there is also a half-month one (5950 HUF) but this will not be available from january. There is however a monthly pass for 8950 HUF or 10 tickets for 4000 HUF. You can buy basically anything. If you are coming for just a a couple of days maybe a 72 hours ticket or 10 normal tickets are fine, but if you travel more, just buy a monthly pass for like 22 euros.

The app is full of bugs, can't purchase a ticket because I cant log in.

There is a system wide issue, there is even a notification message about this. But no issues, you can buy a ticket at the metro stations or in BKK offices as well.

It does say you can buy a ticket without logging, however I am having some difficulties. Currently at the airport just charging my phone.
Thank you for letting me know.

Yeah I'll be there for 3 days. Thank you. That was very helpful.
I seen you can rent a car for very cheap, how is the parking around the city centre. Would you know ?
redikarus99@reddit
Car rental is tricky and finding parking space around the city centre is really tricky. Just use a taxi application like Bolt. Uber is also available but they function as a normal taxi service in Hungary. Always, always use a taxi app (Bolt, Uber) because there are hyenas around train stations and at the airport as well.

Dear OP, buy the book "Secret Budapest" by Jonglez Publishing, and select a few from the 100+ ideas beyond the usual tourist spots.

You should be fine with English, especially in the city centre. You can use the Budapest Go app for public transportation and you can use both Bolt and Uber. No specific card needed, I believe you can pay for tickets with Visa/MC and you can reserve or pay online as well. For more authentic attractions, I would recommend you to browse through the “We love Budapest” page at

Enjoy your stay!

Aside from the Top 10 Recommendations on TripAdvisor, which is mixed with sponsored activities, please read the pinned post. Your type question is asked multiple times per day.
You aren’t the only tourist who doesn’t speak Hungarian. English is fine and you won’t have any issues getting around.
For public transportation, buy a ticket for the length of your stay from one of the automated ticket machines around the city. They’re at most stops. I would avoid using an eTicket from BudapestGo unless you keep your phone fully charged and will have mobile internet.
Yes, thankfully Hungary is one of the most advanced in Europe when it comes to payment. In 99% of places you’ll be able to pay with a Visa card. Some exceptions would be a public bathroom, or hairdresser, etc which you may not run into as a tourist.
Please use the search function here on Reddit. You can a bunch of information and avoid sounding lazy by doing so.
Thanks.
