Vanilla Ice (Ice Ice Baby) did NOT copy Queen & David Bowie's (Under Pressure) ...

It's true there's an extra note on the second part of the base line
Apart-Consequence881@reddit
It is true though that there's an extra note in the second part of the bass line or as Vanilla says "there's an extra 'ting'"
JusticeFrankMurphy@reddit
In today’s parlance, I believe we would call this a failed attempt at gaslighting.
SkeltonJustCalled@reddit
It's like Lenin said..
NapalmWeed@reddit
Shut the fuck up Donny!
LH99@reddit
I remember this interview lol. What a moron.
I think the producer was the one who said it was a track they never thought they’d release or something so they didn’t ask permission. But once it hit knew they’d have to pay.
ROAD_EGG@reddit
I think VI ended up buying the rights to the Bowie song so he gets paid off both.
scottyv99@reddit
Correct
BritOnTheRocks@reddit
Do you have a source? I’m getting mixed messages on the Googles.
scottyv99@reddit
He says it in a few interviews. The one I saw was for Dan Patrick
PepurrPotts@reddit
It seems like his grin belies the fact that he knows he's bullshitting.
No-Vacation2807@reddit
It’s not bullshit, he’s just telling the truth. The first thing he says “we sampled it from them.”
badhatharry@reddit
This was literally my mom’s line when we heard this.
“He’s smiling when he says it, so he knows it’s bullshit.”
I was amazed that my very mild mother swore in front of 6th grade me.
Conscious-Intern8594@reddit
That's one of the biggest shit eating grins I've ever seen. He knows.
johnnybok@reddit
It was a new era for paying for samples. Paul’s Boutique was only a year earlier with over a hundred samples, they didn’t pay a dime
AccurateAd5298@reddit
Nope. Paid $250k
johnnybok@reddit
Fine, the dust brothers paid a little bit according to this random article. The point still remains
AccurateAd5298@reddit
They paid, it wasn’t some random article this is a well known fact. One of the most important things about Paul’s Boutique was the fact that they paid and cleared the zillion samples they used.
BTW - it’s over 0.5M in today’s dollars.
johnnybok@reddit
Wow that’s cheap for 105 samples. My original point still remains. Not sure why either of us are getting downvoted. Reddit is grumpy after Christmas 🎅
AccurateAd5298@reddit
You are right, it was exceptionally cheap. I can’t believe the Beatles let them use their beats from Mystery Tour (or Sgt peppers intro?)
scottyv99@reddit
Such a moron that instead of clearing the sample, instead he just bought the publishing rights to the song. So? When the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” 30 years later was made, they had to pay Ice to use the song.
referendum@reddit
You better stop, collaborate, and listen. Referendum is back with a brand new invention. I made those lyrics up. Vanilla Ice's lyrics were different.
GuiltyPiglet5882@reddit
I remember the interview too and knowing that shit made no sense at all.
Smurfblossom@reddit
I think it's funny I never noticed this and I was familiar with both songs.
Shtoolie@reddit
I quote this at least weekly.
IT’S NOT THE SAAAAAAAAAME
moinoisey@reddit
THIS has lived in my head for years. Fucking hilarious. Side note, dude still performs and by all accounts is a nice person. Robert van winkle
WholeLog24@reddit
I always think of this
goodbyeshoe@reddit
As my buddy points out, every time you hear that baseline you’re a little disappointed when it turns out to be “Under Pressure”.
PepurrPotts@reddit
I was gonna ask why he looks so pixelated, but then I remembered he looks exactly that pixelated IRL.
ImAMeanBear@reddit
Is it just me, or does he look like a GTA character? Like, he looks pretty realistic but you know he's not really real
JaxxisR@reddit
Like Max Headroom, but with less static.
Verbull710@reddit
Like 2 weeks ago at work I was walking down the hallway by myself and I chuckled to myself at the random as hell thought of this interview, with his devlish little eyebrow raise at the end describing how "theirs was different" lmao
legend!
ClickF0rDick@reddit
He literally looks like he's mutating into the troll face
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
My wife and I will both will reference this when making a joke about how identical things are “different.” It is crazy that this moment is ingrained into so many of our memories. I can’t think of too many people that I know that we’re of similar age at the time that don’t remember his attempt a explaining how Queen’s was “dun-dun-dun-dada-dun-dun” and his was “dun-dun-dun-DADA-dun-dun”
Odd-Moment-1460@reddit
It's that little bitty change. They're not the same.
JusticeFrankMurphy@reddit
I blame Suge Knight.
HelpImOverthinking@reddit
I think of this clip and his stupid smirk every time I hear either song.
Striking-Access-236@reddit
He didn’t copy it, it’s recycled…
Tenshyun@reddit
Who owns the copyright to Under Pressure? Vanilla Ice The case was eventually settled out of court. There was no denying that Vanilla Ice had sampled “Under Pressure” in his track, so there wasn't much of a case. Vanilla Ice bought the rights to “Under Pressure” and gave Queen, as well as David Bowie, creative credits for “Ice Ice Baby.”
Resident_Beginning_8@reddit
Stole from Queen, David Bowie, AND Alpha Phi Alpha.
ice ice baby, the black and gold
