I had a college application essay that asked about the best book you'd read recently. I wrote about Billy and the Boingers, arguing that it deserved to be treated as literature. When I had the interview, they mentioned being impressed by the essay, and I wound up being offered a partial scholarship. I wish I still had that essay.

My favorite comic! I still have the complete collection books and several stuffed Opuses. I loved the meadow party delegation “we can’t be late we’re delegates”. Poor Opus always trying to find his mom. Steve Dallas was a sexist pig. Binkley’s anxiety closet. I miss it!

My favorite were always the pictures (usually of real people) on the wall. They were usually just “there”, contributing basically nothing to the story but making me crack up just the same. Nancy Reagan was a particular highlight for me.

In Boy Scouts, we grew tired of being the Eagle patrol (in part because the Eagle patrol patch looked like a bunch of flying bananas). On a campout, we started brainstorming for ideas. Somebody had something with Opus on it. That prompted the idea, the “Kill Opus” patrol. That morphed into the name that stuck: the Dead Penguins. We had custom-drawn patrol patches with a dead Opus on his back with X’s for eyes and an arrow in his chest. Actually, I always liked Opus. But the mob overruled me. It was a cool patrol name, at least.

remember when Goober McGee called Milo from the front desk of the local motel, to tell Milo the band he'd booked for the high school dance had arrived? one of those laughing fits so intense that you pull a stomach muscle. and in a 30-year software career I've cried "there's no such thing as banana walrus wafers!" more than a couple of times. used the comeback line too.
