I’m not totally sure how “bloke” is used in this context but I hardly ever use “dickhead” in regular conversation.

Dickhead feels more Boston than NYC to me.

It's an insult equivalent to "jerk" or "asshole." In close friendships, it can be used as one of those endearing insults that only close friends use for each other.

I feel like bloke and dude are pretty interchangeable. Dickhead is an insult.

Bloke isn’t an insult though.

False. I did not edit it to be correct. I originally said dickhead and asshole are pretty interchangeable but was worried that “asshole” might be equally lost in translation. So I changed it to “Dickhead is an insult” to avoid confusion.

Right, neither is dude most of the time.

If you use "bloke" you identify as not being from here. If you use "dickhead" you've just insulted someone and engaged a confrontation.

No. Not at all. It is an insulting word. People in the US don’t use curse words casually. Maybe in some small friend groups it is a thing, but not to strangers.

I take it you have never sat in NY traffic?

I’ve driven In manhattan many times. The only person to call me that was one of the guys from Queer Eye (the blond one) as I was blocking the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel. I had the right of way, but someone hit the suv two cars in front of me, making me stuck in the middle of the u shaped entrance before they changed the traffic pattern.

I assure you if you were blocking the the entrance tot the LT, many other people called you that or something similar in a short span of time, you may just may not have heard them.

The accident happened as we had the green light. There was nothing I could have done differently. I am sure you are correct though.

I didn't mean to imply you were at fault. It doesn't matter whose fault it was, you're the one sitting there.

Thanks, it’s okay. I’ve never felt like I was at fault, just the person who ended up stuck in the middle of the road right after an accident. But the blind guy’s face does live rent free in my head. Oh he yelled some choice expletives at me. I tried to explain it was a car accident, he was not having it.

I think you’re taking the piss, which I’m reliably informed means “asking in good faith” Guy, dude, and man are all frequently used neutral terms for a bloke, but dickhead is always a straightforward insult or a joking “friendly” insult, never neutral. This is not regional, however casually insulting strangers is more common in NYC. It’s still an insult, though.

No. Dickhead is an insult bloke is basically unused in the US.

Dickhead is an insult. Bloke just means an average man.

You call somebody a dickhead when you're ready to punch them in the face. Bloke is more similar to "bro" or "friend" or "guy" or "dude" depending on how annoying you are.

Dickhead is an insult. Kind of like calling someone a tossed or wanker. Different meanings, but same idea.

FarmerExternal@reddit

I would equate it more to “wanker” it’s definitely an insult

You must really be pissing people off.  Not in NYC. That's a moderately strong insult.  Bloke is hardly ever used anywhere in America.

JudgeWhoOverrules@reddit

Those are both Australian terms.

PhunkyPhazon@reddit

Dickhead is definitely used in America, just not in the way OP seems to think.

Dickhead is an insult. Bloke is a generalized term for presumably male individual and is generally neutral. At least in the united states, being called a dickhead is not a good thing.

No. “Dickhead” is obscene and an insult. “Bloke” isn’t, and is rarely used.
