Perc H730: Bad or missing RAID controller memory module.

Typical for a holiday week, came into work to a problem. This is a non-production server so I'm not too terribly concerned about it. Dell R230 / Perc H730 UEFI0116: One or more boot drivers have reported issues. Bad or missing RAID controller memory module. Honestly, I didn't have much time to dig into it. I did look up UEFI0116 but didn't find much info on the exact error (bad or missing memory module). We went ahead and ordered another H730 but does anyone know if this is an easy fix or a dead controller? I'm assuming putting the replacement H730 in will be as easy as just importing the foreign config with hopefully no data loss? Again, not a big deal if there is data loss, just will save some time if not.

As it was the memory module that failed, there *might* be some data loss. RAID memory is basically a buffer for between the the OS trying to write data, and the discs themselves. If the discs are busy, data gets stored in the memory until there's time to write them to disc. So if it was enabled in the RAID config, and there was data waiting to be written to the disc when it failed - that data is possibly gone. Otherwise, yes. Replacing a failed PERC is relatively straightforward. Replace card, import foreign config, and go.

New controller is in, and the VD is back up and running. I totally forgot that it autostarts a BGI and I hadn't racked it up before it started. So I guess it sits on the cart until it's done.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I'm going to swap out the PERC and see what happens. If there's data loss, no big deal.

Swapping it out should be straightforward. Just install the new controller, and when prompted, import the foreign configuration to preserve your existing RAID setup. Data loss is unlikely if the drives and configuration remain intact, but always be cautious if the RAID state was degraded before the swap.

Wow, why would you put anything but a Black Rose on a R230? It's 10 years old and almost has the power of my last iPhone.
