Those who hated their parents and they died, did you have regrets?

Not me (though I'm 8 years NC with my dad. Not that I think it should be normal to just go NC with someone), but I can say my uncle, aunt and mum have some level of regret or at least doubts. My uncle didn't speak to his dad for 10 years before he died (after he was thrown out/disowned by his dad), literally arrived in the hospital as he was gasping for breathe and dying and claims to regret it every day (he says he feels like his dad's expression was saying he forgave him). My mum didn't speak to her dad for 15 years (she was disowned by her dad), until 2 months before he died (just a coincidence he died soon after) and does wish it could have been different, even though she thinks he was stupid. She liked the song Dance with my Father, but it also made her sad. My mum's sister didn't speak to her dad for over 15 years, after she ran away from home at 19 and didn't get to the hospital in time as she lived abroad and was driving up with her sister from Heathrow. She regrets it to some degree - not running away from home, but I think all of them wish they'd been back in contact earlier. It could be their delusion, but it can be that the relationship can be improved with age (both the child's age and the parent's age) or as life circumstances change (eg I'd say my mum's more mature since her and my dad divorced in my 20s, whereas before she was impossible to talk to and unempathetic/unsympathetic with me). I've cut off somewhat from other family (like cousins) due to our relationship not meeting expectations I had about family, but I think one can redefine their relationships with family and still get something out of them (but in some cases it may not be easy, because of the emotions of disappointment stemming from the expectations or seeing others' relationships, especially your sister's). If the relationships can be redefined as "not being so close but that's ok", rather than "parents are supposed to be \[this\] close with kids" the relationship can be a non-stressful one. Like in some cultures, it's normal for couples to be in love, in others not so much, but they're still happy because they see marriage as more about family stability and child-rearing. Or some cultures it's considered normal to not discuss some types of personal things with parents and that's fine to them, because of cultural conditioning...I have no desire to discuss romance with my parents, while a lot of ethnically British people seem to want to do that with their own parents. Or a British old person being put in a home will not elicit the same emotional reaction as an Asian doing the same thing (many Asians would consider it a personal disgrace to do such a thing, because of their culture's attitudes towards parents/family).
