That's brave to publicly admit to deleting a truck on the Internet. Doesn't matter if you swap a different engine in, that's still getting rid of a system that the truck is legally required to have. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it if I could, but this is just asking for the EPA to come knocking on your door.
Actually the age of the engine directly determines if the system needs emissions devices. Don't remember the exact numbers, but it's like 2000+ needs a dpf system and 2010+ needs def. Anything older than that (or whatever the actual year mark is) is a pre-emissions block and is neither require, nor, for that matter, capable, of having those kinds of emissions systems installed.
DPF is 2008 and up (EPA08). DEF is 2012 (EPA12) and up. And removing an engine from an emissions compliant truck and putting an old pre emission engine in it's place is very much illegal. Sure a lot of people do it but it's the matter of getting caught. That truck was built with emissions included and thus can't be removed legally. Gliders were the only way to get around that. You can't just take an engine out and call it a glider either as that is part of the vin and registration.
Any time an engine swap is done, it has to be replaced with a matching EPA rated engine or newer. Brand doesn't matter however.
Local laws have nothing to do with it and The EPA doesn't give a damn. If you make a compliant truck non compliant, they will have a problem with you. It doesn't matter if you are do something as small as removing the DPF or as large as putting a pre emissions engine into a truck. They see it as "deleting" and removing regulated emissions hardware. It's the main reason why gliders do not exist anymore.
Local laws and emissions testing is not the same realm as the EPA.
Now would I still put a pre emissions engine into a truck if I had the opportunity to? Hell yeah! I wouldn't hesitate doing it. I'm only stating that it is playing with fire and if the EPA found out, they could send a hefty fine your way.
Again, learn the local laws. Deletes are grandfathered and completely legal in Alberta, with a few stipulations such as the exhaust system has to remain in factory configuration and intact. Stop talking about things you don't know, and don't argue with people who do.
Maybe state that you are in Canada next time? Most discussions on this subreddit are usually in regards to US matters and thus I'm talking about US laws and regs. Forgive my ignorance to not knowing what country you reside in.
The truck is in Alberta, the entire rest of the thread is talking about Dave's diesel in Alberta. Maybe catch up before you start injecting a bunch of legalese 🤷
70 plus comments and only 2 mention being in Alberta. Again forgive me for not knowing this is Alberta and who Dave's diesel is. I guess I need to read the entire Wikipedia page on the country and the company before commenting for fear of being a "legalese" spewing "miss information".
Or you can just be a little more civil and say, "this is actually in Alberta where this sort of build would be grandfathered and accepted". This whole conversation would have gone differently. Instead I get passive aggressive "rEaD ThE LocAl LaWs" and "EverY onE Is TaLkiNG aBouT AlBErtA yOu IDiot"
Sorry to come on here late. Ill be 100% transparent here. This video in specific was a huge success across all platforms. These comments arguing about the emissions are the main reason. The algorithm does care what you are talking about. Just that fact that people ARE commenting. That is the main reason why its only subtly mentioned in the video. Hope this doesn't back fire but just wanted to explain the reasoning why its not mentioned more bluntly.
Hey it's all good. It's always a touch subject regardless and it's also why I'm pretty hush hush on the subject my self when talking about my stuff. Over all the build is awesome and I love it. Keep doing your thing!
I'm done arguing with the guy who spouted off with an asshole tone right from the start and then got defensive. Travel more, go read a book, maybe delete your wrong comment. Enjoy your holidays.
Not really. That's only true for legit gliders. If a truck was manufactured with a compliant engine, by law, it is required to have a compliant engine. What he did is equivalent to deleting a truck.
There were plenty of trucks in early 2000s without even an EGR. 2007 for DPF.Â
My engine is a 2001 60 series that never had an EGR, I don't need an EGR or DPF. Only ELD. There were even a few 14Ls that squeaked by without an EGR (not common to find).Â
To be fair, this is in Alberta, Canada. Up here trucks have to go through a CVIP every 6-12 months (depending on jurisdiction). This is a government certified inspection, and the contents of the inspection are agreed upon at a national level. Alberta agreed to it, but crossed out the entire emissions section when enacting it here. If this truck stays in Alberta it's 100% legal and safe. If it heads to Ontario, then it could be a problem.
I think we need to focus on pushing the industry to find alternatives to DEF instead of just deleting the system. The folks hurt by unregulated engines are us and those who work around our rigs, not an engineer by any means, but there’s got to be a better way to reduce emissions without DEF.
Having to breathe in those fumes when a third-party driver comes onto the yard where I work. They tell us not to idle, but a third-party comes in and it’s fucking chugging away making us breathe that shit in. Don’t care for it. It’s like gasoline, or paint. Most people like the smell, but we all know it’s killing us.
It reduces nox emissions, nitrogen oxide and blow by ( the black soot or rolling coal). But it emits ammonia gas that's harmful to crops.
It's an after treatment for the exhaust. But when one of the many sensors fail, which they often due, the computer derates the engine.... or shuts it down completely. Reducing you to 55mph down to 5mph forensic on the severity of the code
I honestly don't know how many there are. But I've seen too many short videos on YT of people being pulled over for "exhaust modifications" when the vehicles they're driving are stock from factory. Or videos of cops telling people they have to be operating the vehicle in "eco" mode and not "sport". Like, dude, fuck off.
I don't live in California and I never plan to because I like modifying my vehicles and I love sport/race tunes.
Well since you cant keep a modern emissions engine running in Alberta because of the cold, yes it's necessary if you want your business to survive. I probably has 200k in financial losses in the last 5 years from emissions related issues and lost opportunity cost.
I'm sure he could've found a KW or something up in Grande Prairie. Iirc Oculus runs a whole bunch of tri drive KWs, Peterbilts, and Volvos. Ritchie Bros is not too far east. There are always old oil field trucks there. Solid build though.
It said that the owner was looking for a KW or a Peterbilt tri drive. Oculus is an oil field company that sells a lot of their old equipment. Those trucks are also well kitted.
He wanted a KW or Pete with a cat engine. Oculus doesn't have any trucks with cat engines or even pre emissions engines. I don't know of any of the larger fleet companies that have anything with cat engines. Trican did about 12 years ago but those trucks are likely long gone.
I mean. That's going to depend on how prepared the driver is. Peterbilt probably won't have the CAT engine serial, and then all the parts that were used to interface the chassis with the motor aren't that likely to match VIN. I see this problem with frankentrucks all the time.
I drive a frankentruk and I just have engine serial numbers, part numbers, or even vin numbers from the donor trucks. Keep that info and it's not that hard to get what you need where ever you are at. The point is when you are that deep into modifying a truck far from stock, you never go to the dealer. Go to independent shops that service the engine you have and if you need parts. Call the manufacturer of the truck your engine used to be in with it's vin or engine serial number and get parts that way. It's a little more difficult, yes. But not the end of the world.
We have one here. Built by a custom builder \~30 years ago; they closed up shortly thereafter. So far we've found parts from 3 different models, to adapt X cabin to Y chassis to Z gearbox. Only a couple of custom made parts thankfully, and they've been simple to make ourselves.
Best parts guy I ever met Knew His Shit, and had me on the road fast.
I went in, "G'day mate, I need X part for Y truck. Here's the VIN (written large and clearly on a clean piece of paper). Here's a picture of the part." (actually several, on a 10" tablet, co-starring My Finger to indicate the part required)
"OK, that's part #123, no #125." click click click "We don't have any in stock, so that will take 2 (looks at clock on the wall) correction 3 days to get here."
Me thinking: *"Fuck fuckitty fuck fuck fucking fuck it!"*
Many more clicks.
"I do have the equivalent part for the previous model on the shelf. It's not a direct replacement, you'll need to buy a different mounting bracket too, which we also have in stock."
"Hmmm, how much is it?"
"Part is the same price; bracket is $40."
"Sold." Well worth the extra cost to get moving, especially when I'm not paying.
That sort of parts guy is worth the truck's weight in gold.
Well that's very much appreciated, I could never work as a driver with my life setup, but it takes us all to make it happen every day and get things where they have to be for modern life to function.
As someone who has had Cummins, Detroits, Cats, Volvos and now a Scania V8.
I don't get the whole Cat love affair. Like they sound better than Cummins or DD 6s. But like they do sweet FA better unless its the big boy Cats. Like the 19Ls or the V12s.
