Holy shit, has anyone else seen the Lisa Frank Documentary on Prime?

It shouldn’t be nearly as fascinating as it is, am I am absolutely going to watch this in one sitting.
jannalarria@reddit
Did she make those monkey toys, backpacks, etc that were insanely expensive?
No-Presence-8028@reddit
Everyone is a victim of her! She is a thief and A Liar! She should be held accountable!!Yes maybe her husband wasn't the nicest to work for, but geez he had to deal with her ! I'm so upset after 👀 watching this. It's Alll her. I hope she goes down.
mdesign816@reddit
James Green seems like a real douche
Many-Willingness3515@reddit
I didn't like how the documentary described her ripping off Native Americans as being a “middleman.”
She bought their art and resold it for far more than she paid for it. That's not a middleman who connects people. She was conning them.
Tasty-Building-3887@reddit
She is horrible. That Greece trip! Disgusting.
Shanntuckymuffin@reddit
Yes, and what I gleaned from it was both Lisa and her husband were giant pieces of shit. Everyone sucks
Ok-Royal-661@reddit
especially ronda
Holycatsbatman4@reddit
Rhonda was a delight (sarcasm)
Ok-Royal-661@reddit
what a waste of skin she is
Puzzleheaded_Gap8804@reddit
and Ronda too what a trash bag
True_Prize4868@reddit
Oh no! Is this going to burst my Lisa Frank-loving bubble?
moeru_gumi@reddit
Oh absolutely. Lisa was a tyrant, abusive and horrible to her stable of artists, it was well documented for years.
Ann_Amalie@reddit
Shit!!! And now there’s a LF revival and she’s selling her crap for exorbitant prices (or maybe not selling so much because it’s so expensive!)
mamaferal@reddit
FuzzyScarf@reddit
Yes, yes it is.
Blurby-Blurbyblurb@reddit
sjd208@reddit
There was an amazing article a few years ago about them and the then-current state of the company.
Shanntuckymuffin@reddit
They reference it no less than 20 times in the docuseries
sjd208@reddit
Ha! I will have to actually watch it then. I rarely watch documentaries unless they’re really juicy which it sounds like this one is
Shanntuckymuffin@reddit
This one can probably be skipped then. The best doc of 2024 was Chimp Crazy
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
Ohhh - thanks for the recommendation!
moonbunnychan@reddit
I remember that! Apparently it was known locally as "the rainbow gulag".
mamaferal@reddit
Ohhhh my god I'm rolling at that. 🤣
jocosely_living@reddit
What?!? Oh no.
Alternative_Key_1313@reddit
Oh no. We can't even have glitter unicorns w/o scandal.
animesuxdix@reddit
But the folders were super cute. S/
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
Lisa Frank was a staple at the beginning of every school year. It was a psychedelic onslaught of folders, trapper keepers, pens, stickers for my kaboodle. I had no idea Lisa Frank was an actual person.
I feel like I need a shower after listening to the ex husband. He’s currently “loudly stating” I do t have a temper. I DONT HAVE A TEMPER. I. Don’t. Have. A. Temper.
And it’s the leaning forward in his chair, finger pointing and gesticulating as his voice gets louder and louder that really sells it.
Rogue_Gona@reddit
Keep watching. Because at the end of this shitshow, >!he actually comes out looking like the better person!<
😬
Fiveminutes26@reddit
Eh, I still didn’t like him. I feel like the dad maybe turned Hunter against his mom and Forrest. Yeah, Lisa doesn’t seem to be the best person either (but honestly, that one company, how do you not read contracts and such before signing. They could have done so and it wasn’t mentioned in the doc, but y’all shot yourselves in the foot there), did some shady stuff, but we only gong one side of the story on everything it seems
OutlawJuicyWhales@reddit
WRT the Glamour Dolls fiasco, I'm on GDI's side there and I hope their remaining lawsuits prove successful. That contract read as fishy to me from the moment LFI specified wanting 15% of NET profits past their guaranteed $100k deposit. Net is easy to hide on paper. That was a red flag that LFI wasn't confident that they could earn more than $100k from one phase of the license, and/or that LFI was either uncertain of or unwilling to deliver on their end of the deal.
When they quintupled the payment scheme for an extension of the license without delivering on approval for the KS designs, my immediate sense as a licensee would have been that it was an extortion racket. I find it hard to believe that the original contract language doesn't cover that to some degree, provided that GDI had competent representation, and I suspect that that's why the suit alleging fraud on LFI's part is moving forward.
At minimum, I hope LFI finds themselves in a position where they at least have to settle with GDI for what they lost on those two contracts. But that will likely come down to who has deeper pockets for legal representation.
Holycatsbatman4@reddit
I was really hoping against hope that they had already settled that lawsuit. So disappointing how they just got completely screwed.
Flux_My_Capacitor@reddit
Oh, the dad DEFINITELY turned him against his mom! Men tend to be loyal to men regardless, so it’s not that difficult to turn a son against his mom…..also because the dad can be “cool” while the mom has to do the actual work of raising the child.
Tinselcat33@reddit
I got the sense they both participated in that behavior, the whole family is a mess.
Rogue_Gona@reddit
Oh for sure. I wasn't saying he wasn't a giant piece of shit, just that he seemed like a less giant piece of shit since he fucked off to Mexico and didn't ruin anyone else's lives (that we know of). He seems super chill now that he's so far removed from that nasty woman and the company.
But he's absolutely, 100%, still a giant narcissistic piece of shit. And so is his son.
Fiveminutes26@reddit
Definitely. I think that was his only redeeming quality, moving to Mexico
strange_brunette@reddit
He’s not a good person. He’s worse than her. He was nothing before he met her and he had a taste of the good life when they hooked up. I’d never trust anything that comes out of that little shit’s mouth.
I used to work at LFI. He was a POS.
alfamale_@reddit
Testiculating - Waving your arms about and talking bollox 😅
Shortsleevedpant@reddit
That’s actually called pontificating but I really think testiculating could gain traction as a word.
imhereforthevotes@reddit
I feel like pontificating is mostly being pompous about legitimate opinions in this way. Talking bollocks raises that to the level of testiculating.
medusa_crowley@reddit
Stealing this
alfamale_@reddit
Please do - it's not mine to start with 😅
histprofdave@reddit
I felt real bad for the son who was interviewed. Mad as hell at mom, worshiping dad despite his obvious flaws... a real mess.
Rogue_Gona@reddit
That entire family is a prime example of "people who should never ever breed."
DayBowBow1@reddit
Thank you for reminding me about her. I specifically remember her products at the book fairs lol.
GenevieveLeah@reddit
My mom knew him growing up.
Holycatsbatman4@reddit
I just finished it and, wow, Lisa and James need to be studied by behavioral health professionals. They both have textbook personality disorders. Psychology professors can easily use parts of this documentary as case study. They never interviewed her for the doc, but he came off as instantly unlikable, hostile and sociopathic. They deserved each other.
Ok_Recording4547@reddit
RightOpportunity7912@reddit
This resonates so much for me right now.
RightOpportunity7912@reddit
Between Lisa Frank and her ex-husband, none of those employees had a chance. It's really insane that something meant to bring children joy was so corrupt behind-the-scenes.
WhosSarahKayacombsen@reddit
I'm a month late to this discussion, but seriously, what is going on here? I have a lot of thoughts and questions, but my main takeaway is that she's an absolutely terrible businesswoman. Her legacy will be defined by a trail of poor business decisions. I'd love for her to give a response by giving a sit-down interview.
lsp2005@reddit
I watched the entire thing. The make up folks were really treated terribly by her. All of the other employees came across as sour grapes. Her son seems stuck mentally as a 14 year old. The ex husband absolutely grew the company, but it was at the end of the day her company. She was smart to retain 51% ownership. I really got the feeling that he married her for the company and not for her. He even said he really did not want kids. That has to emotionally scar the now adult children. Neither one sound like great parents.
Flux_My_Capacitor@reddit
Yeah, he’s saying he didn’t want kids and the son is still loyal to him. 🙄
FatCraic@reddit
THIS! I'm like "Uh kid you do realize this means you, right?" And how does his father think he "created everything?!" You were neither an artist nor the idea man all you did was criticize and make employees miserable! What an asshole.
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
That’s about my take so far - he stated that he wasn’t excited to get married or have kids. And I get the impression that she pushed it. Maybe she went scorched earth after she figured it out? So far she sounds like an old school country song about a woman wronged who burned everything down.
FuzzyScarf@reddit
I got the impression she wanted to marry him because his last name was Green.
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
Woah - she is super shady. There is no excuse for her behavior described in the final episode.
lsp2005@reddit
Yes, her behavior with the make up folks just comes across as money grubbing and she treated them terribly. Of all of the people interviewed, I felt badly for them and the people who did not get their kickstarter items.
elkniodaphs@reddit
My partner dropped Lisa Frank when the whole make-up company thing happened, as she was following it pretty closely as a backer. She adored Lisa Frank, but I was so proud to see her stand by her convictions.
blue_suavitel@reddit
Yes. Did you notice how everyone interviewed had a different color theme?
External-Animator666@reddit
I thought that was an amazing touch, I really enjoyed it. I spent half the time watching trying to decide if they were sets or not and decided that they were. For the matching clothes one of the interviewers is shown changing his shirt.
blue_suavitel@reddit
Yeah sets or they changed the background in post.
WATERSLYDPARADE@reddit
The colors were a planned aesthetic choice the directors made to personify the colorfulness of the products and subject matter. Some of the settings were people's homes. I was brought to Tucson for my interview and it took place at a super cute tea room downtown called The Lavendar Manor. I was told to wear some shade of purple. https://www.lifeundertheoakslavenderfarm.com/thelavendermanor-929598-852721.html
blue_suavitel@reddit
Oooo wow! Thanks for explaining and thank you for your art.
omgforeal@reddit
Esh they did a great job w production. The theme song was and intro was great too
lsp2005@reddit
I did notice that!
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
I really didn’t, but I’m going to notice now!
Low_Combination5627@reddit
Yes it was so good. I started out hating the husband but by the end felt sorry for him. What a disappointment she is for so many little girls who thought the brand was her. She had a chance to be a good human and blew it. Such is capitalism, I guess.
WATERSLYDPARADE@reddit
You believed him?! He is a master manipulator and a liar. I know, I was there.
omgforeal@reddit
I have Lisa Frank crocs (i strive to get some of the loudest or tackiest ones cuz they’re crocs. I can’t avoid it) and I instantly was like uhhhhh… never mind.
They both struck me as incredibly unethical and horrible to work for. The HR lady was also shady as hell - for denying what the other folks claimed. I doubt she had an affair but who knows.
Puzzleheaded_Gap8804@reddit
she aged poorly . Karma
OutlawJuicyWhales@reddit
I don't think Rhonda and James were having an affair. I got the distinct impression that James viewed Lisa as beneath him but worth pursuing for the money. Rhonda offered him nothing in comparison.
I would absolutely buy that they were both way into cocaine, though. Rhonda mentions starting to have seizures later in life and attributes them to stress. I'd not be surprised if that were symptomatic of serotonin syndrome from years of drug abuse.
omgforeal@reddit
Interesting!!!
grandma-caesar@reddit
I literally *JUST* started episode 4! I had no idea she was so vile.
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
I’m on episode 3, and feel comfortable assuming that her behavior is the result of her husband’s actions. That man is vile.
Puzzleheaded_Gap8804@reddit
its like you didn't know the cameras were on? this is like shit you say when you are wasted out of your mind lol
External-Animator666@reddit
good lord this is a hot take, not everything is men's fault, women are allowed to be accountable for their own actions.
omgforeal@reddit
Dude chill
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
Yup. It was a live update reaction. Things get even worse in the next episode.
elementalguitars@reddit
Her bahavior is definitely not a result of her husband’s actions. She’s truly a vile person. I used to work in the construction trade in Tucson and worked on one of her houses. Every sub-contractor on the job regretted taking the job. By the time the house was being finished she was in legal disputes with every sub and the super. Her new neighbors all hated her too. She purchased a beautiful large single story ranch home in a wealthy neighborhood full of beautiful old single-story ranch homes, bulldozed it, replaced it with a house that looks like an enormous two-story concrete fortress and now she doesn’t even live in it. She moved back into her previous ugly gray house in a different historic neighborhood where everyone still hates her from the time she bulldozed a beautiful old home there just to construct a monstrous eyesore. She’s horrible and everyone in the city knows it. I don’t understand why she still lives here.
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
My bad - I was wrong. I’m in the final episode and her behavior is not excusable.
grandma-caesar@reddit
I felt that way too - just wait. She does some pretty nasty things to small businesses and POC long after her husband had been removed from the company. At the end of the day, they were both terrible for sure!
PistolGrace@reddit
Judging by the comments, maybe I shouldn't feel so bad for having poor parents. I never got the cute stuff. I was lucky to have any supplies.
wrldruler21@reddit
Guess I was too poor to even know what Lisa Frank is
Your_Favorite_Poster@reddit
That must be why i have no idea who she is. I was happy when I got Sergio Valente's from Payless.
Puzzleheaded_Gap8804@reddit
omg i had the ones with the V on the back pockets lol
Puzzleheaded_Gap8804@reddit
i was too old lol
gopher2110@reddit
Yeah, who is she? Never heard of her.
UpkeepUnicorn@reddit
I wasn't too poor to know, because everyone else had it. But I was definitely to poor to have it. I mean, I guess Lisa Frank was generally more targeted to girls anyway...
ZombyAnna@reddit
I got the donated Rose Art brand knock-offs! 🤣
It made me feel marginally better because of all the color-your-own stickers. I still love stickers! 😆
AnimatronicCouch@reddit
Rose Art!!! We always had their stuff too. Their crayons were so bad they un-colored the paper! To this day when something has a shitty or cheap version, I refer to it as the "Rose Art" version. 😂
UpkeepUnicorn@reddit
Same! This is going to sound maybe strange, but I started seeing a psychiatrist, and he has all these fun, cute stickers in his office and at the front desk, so I always grab a handful...
ZombyAnna@reddit
So do I! My counselor has large ones for "breakthroughs"! 🤣
I feel seen, haha! I love it so much!
UpkeepUnicorn@reddit
Ha! That's so funny! I'm glad to have helped you feel seen!
GoddessRespectre@reddit
Can I join? Still love puffy stickers! And fondly remember colorforms 😊
UpkeepUnicorn@reddit
You're welcome at my sticker party!

I always ask for one when I go to get blood drawn or a vaccine. If they still had lollipops I'd probably ask for a red one.
UpkeepUnicorn@reddit
I love that!

Yeah I have absolutely no recognition of this name at all

The Behind the Bastards podcast did a great dive into her. Also Robert Kincaid, for another artist.

sipporah7@reddit
ooooh added to watch list
nin4nin@reddit
I am the boy middle child between two girls and I have never, ever heard of Lisa Frank LOL. It’s fascinating how I completely missed this part of our culture.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit
I’ll have to remember to fire this one up once the Amazon strike is over. No crossing. The picket line, even if it’s just to see a movie.
oakback@reddit
One thing this subreddit has taught me is how incredibly out of touch I was/am with my own generation's culture. So many popular things I've never heard of.
GrumpyKaeKae@reddit
Oh man... we really can't have anything nice can we?
Icy-Finance5042@reddit
Didn't watch this, but watched Bailey sarian discuss it on her utube.
strange_brunette@reddit
I worked there as one of the lead illustrators when I was 19. Lisa was a great mentor. But she obviously had her favorites. She didn’t treat her long time workers that well. But she was very demanding and a perfectionist. Also, her neighbors at her historic neighborhood weren’t always happy with her because her house didn’t conform to the area.
James and Rhonda though, don’t trust anything they say. James especially. Dude has a severe case of Napoleon Complex. A lot of the designers were taller than him. I’m a 5’5” woman. He’s about as tall as me if not shorter. When he would talk to the designers, he would summon as all to the grand staircase as he’d stand several steps higher so he’d appear taller than everyone else. He also cheated on Lisa with Rhonda. I was told he used to work on Lisa’s car prior to them hooking up. Not sure if that’s true.
Apprehensive_Owl9942@reddit
With your experience, how do you feel like they did with the documentary? Was it pretty accurate?
FinancialCry4651@reddit
Check out the stories about her from Tucson people (from 2022) https://www.reddit.com/r/Tucson/s/PM0GbugBYI
TheBalteseFalcon@reddit
The Dollop did an excellent Podcast on Lisa Frank in January. I sent it to my sister who was obsessed with LF as a kid.
Ecstatic-Respect-455@reddit
Yes, it was a great episode. I couldn't believe what a nasty pair Lisa Frank and her husband were.
i_heart_pasta@reddit
You talking about the Jewish kid?
EmeraldHawk@reddit
I have known how awful she is for over 10 years now, since reading this excellent piece in Jezebel:
https://www.jezebel.com/inside-the-rainbow-gulag-the-technicolor-rise-and-fall-1179495705?utm_campaign=socialflow_jezebel_facebook&utm_source=jezebel_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow
If you don't have Netflix or time to sit through a documentary, give this a skim instead.
melissisms@reddit
The phrase “Rainbow Gulag” has been seared in my memory since first reading this article all those years ago.
WholeLog24@reddit
I remember that article! Sill can't take the shine off a rainbow-colored leopard marrying her dapper dachshund husband.
ParsleyMostly@reddit
When I first saw the doc I thought, “I swear I’ve seen this before?” And it was that article I was recalling!
So then I’m telling my sister about the doc, and she says, “I think I’ve already seen it years ago?” But it was that same article she was remembering, too!
All of which is to say, both are excellent!
omgforeal@reddit
This writer was in the doc and I remember reading it way back when

I was too upset by it and stopped watching!
crlcan81@reddit
Oh wow someone else who finally realizes what some of us knew before these documentaries were a thing. Usually the 'face' of the company isn't the problem, but once they stop being good for the brand they get fucked in the ass. Bob Ross is another one like Lisa Frank where she was the face but wasn't the one causing problems.
fakesaucisse@reddit
Tell me more about the problems with Bob Ross or his brand? I thought he was always considered a beloved fixture on TV.
FireFoxTrashPanda@reddit
Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed - it's on Netflix
Basically, he ended up working with some crappy people who IIRC own his brand to this day and tried to take everything from his son.

Oh wow, thank you for this. I am going to check that out.

I don't wanna know. I wanna remember my pretty fun little childhood things as they were without attaching some awful shit

Who's Lisa frank?
EternalSunshineClem@reddit
It was good but it wasn't as shocking as I was expecting for a four part series. Like this really could have been a 90 minute documentary. Blah blah blah two narcissists blah blah

Yes and I really couldn't believe it. Totally ruined how I see that stuff now. Both her and the husband are just such shitty people.

I watched all of it in one sitting. I found it to be very interesting.
Farewellandadieu@reddit
The name Lisa Frank doesn't ring any bells without context, were we all just supposed to know? Google came through though in case my head's been in the sand. Looks fascinating! That shit was everywhere.
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)
Honestly, it never occurred to me that any xennial was able to escape Lisa Frank. Even if you weren’t a fan, it seemed like this was everywhere for years.
Secular-Flesh@reddit
So strange! I had to google her and even the product doesn’t look familiar to me. That said, I’m a ‘77er so it’s possible it came later (or my schools weren’t cool).
animesuxdix@reddit
It was, every girl I went to school with had these tacky folders, it even made its way to a tiny little hick town, shit town in Indiana.
Wolf_Parade@reddit
In Tucson it was known as the place where all the talented artists worked in a sweatshop.

I watched it. Apparently the articles I read about that situation were false. (This was years ago.) I wouldn’t be surprised if they interviewed her and she lied.
RabidChemist@reddit
This makes Nihilisa Frank even better.
Kinky-Bicycle-669@reddit
I saw it yes and that company is wild.
hellocutiepye@reddit
Hey, thanks to this post I know and about the doc and am watching. Holy Smokes. There's some dirt. And then, all of a sudden, it turns into White Lotus!!!

Spooky_Sparkles79@reddit
I binged it a few weeks ago. The last part was the most interesting. I remember the drama between LF and Glamour Dolls Cosmetics as well as LF Pop Up hotel fiasco vividly. I'm so glad they got to tell their side of the story.
animesuxdix@reddit
My wife and I watched it. Pretty good.
sleigh_all_day@reddit
I found her art to be rather tacky.
catsarelife81@reddit (OP)

As a dude I know little about the brand other than all the brightly colored shit from the 90s, but now I may have to watch it.
Somehow we never get tired of seeing stories of people being becoming filthy rich and just totally bonkers as a result.
Sea2Chi@reddit
Either behind the bastards or the dollop did a podcast about the company.
I had no idea how much of a dramatic clusterfuck it was.
