Office 365 → Microsoft 365 → Microsoft 365 Copilot - Another name change is coming!

Microsoft 365 becomes Microsoft 365 Copilot from Jan 2025. They also updated the logo. (Copilot logo with M365 text at the bottom).

Microsoft and the art of confusing its users with name and logo changes
Every year it seems like they decide to rename Office (which is now Microsoft 365, but who knows tomorrow?). We get used to a name, create a visual habit with the logo, and then they go there and change everything. It's like they want to make sure no one gets too comfortable.
Can you imagine if other companies decided to do the same? Like Apple changing the name of iMovie to ‘CineApple’ one year, then to ‘Apple Editor 360’ the next? Users would waste minutes (or hours!) of their lives just to figure out how to open the app, probably turning to the internet to understand the ingenious new branding scheme. For those who rely on these programs on a daily basis, whether for work or study, these changes are not just annoying – they seem like a planned test of patience. But of course, it’s always because of a ‘market strategy’, right? How lucky for us!

Anyone else frustrated by Microsoft's inconsistency in their product names? Every year it seems like they decide to rename Office (which is now Microsoft 365, but who knows tomorrow?). We get used to a name, create a visual habit with the logo, and then they go there and change everything. It's like they want to make sure no one gets too comfortable.

You may soon need a Copilot for Copilot to navigate all these Copilots. Because without Copilot to Copilot your Copilot, you’ll be trapped in a Copilot-loop so recursive that not even Copilot can Copilot you out of it.
Thank Copilot for Copilot!
Ok_Emu_8095@reddit
Maybe they could design Copilot to answer licensing questions.
frac6969@reddit
It’s Copilots all the way down!
Myriade-de-Couilles@reddit
You are confusing the Microsoft 365 app with the Microsoft 365 product.
Free-Tea-3422@reddit
Lol I love having to explain this to users
NHarvey3DK@reddit
I still hate saying “a Team in Teams”
Ok_Emu_8095@reddit
How about a display port... port.
Or when the Core 2 came out and it only had one core.
qordita@reddit
What! I love telling people I created that Teams team in Teams that they requested!
Justsomedudeonthenet@reddit
That they requested in the Team Creation team in Teams?
Tymanthius@reddit
Masochist. ;)
Jaybone512@reddit
"A Teams Team" /cries
ProfessionalBee4758@reddit
come on, ms teams users are handicapped - if they are your A Team, Hanniball Smith is Timmy from Southpark. Timmy!
randalzy@reddit
"The A-Team!"
UserDenied-Access@reddit
tsaico@reddit
I hated explaining teams in teams, but not the white and purple icon with a purple “t” but the purple and white icon with a white “t”, then the purple and white icon with a white “t” but now says “new”… but no longer

Coming soon... Microsoft.
Dropped all pretenses.
Vertimyst@reddit
That would be just as bad as the Windows App
overworked-sysadmin@reddit
I'll be waiting for Microsoft 365 Copilot (New)
xylopyrography@reddit
Microsoft 365 Essentials Copilot For Enterprise (New)
Kyla_3049@reddit
Microsoft Office 365/366 Essentials Copilot for Enterprise IoT LTSC (classic)
rotoddlescorr@reddit
Then they'll start from scratch and call it Microsoft Core.
Muggle_Killer@reddit
Their 365 name is supposed to show that they cover you every day of the year?
Leap years have 366 days though.
geoff5093@reddit
You sure it’s not just a logo change? Copilot is its own thing.
workaccountandshit@reddit
Received this today from MS:
".. Additionally, the Microsoft 365 app will be named Microsoft 365 Copilot, and its icon will be updated as announced during the November 2024 Ignite conference."
music2myear@reddit
That's the app, which means they'll be integrating Copilot into it, not that the entire service is going to be called that. Microsoft 365 is a service too. The app is just the mobile version of the office suite.
Bubba89@reddit
Sure but you’re still gonna get tickets asking for help with someone’s “copilot 365” and have to figure out how to translate that into reality.
bfodder@reddit
Well that is just always going to be a thing. Everyone here seems to love calling any mail app they use "Outlook" whether it is the built in Mail app on their phone, Gmail, or something else.
Windows95GOAT@reddit
Nah they call it mail. Nobody calls it outlook lmao.
bfodder@reddit
Even our God damn help desk does it.
3percentinvisible@reddit
They already have integrated copilot into it, the change is just to surface it on the home screen
TheDisapprovingBrit@reddit
Microsoft 365 Copilot is already its own product as I understand it.
Copilot is the free but generic AI - essentially ChatGPT. M365 Copilot is the same thing but with a license fee and MS Graph integration so it can do all the fancy “summarise what I’ve missed from this meeting” bullshit.
Mr_ToDo@reddit
Did you mean to include your email in your link?
Craptcha@reddit
The mobile App, not the service.
GrapefruitOne1648@reddit
Windows used to be its own thing and now Windows App is remote desktop

Dang
SensitiveFirefly@reddit
M365 itself isn’t changing, they’re just aligning Copilot with the M365 portfolio.
Windows95GOAT@reddit
until governments force them to break it up again like Teams.
jvolzer@reddit
Additionally, the Microsoft 365 app will be named Microsoft 365 Copilot, and its icon will be updated as announced during the November 2024 Ignite conference.
Mr_ToDo@reddit
Ya, it's a lot of announcements in one drop
Also it looks like they might be phasing out some domains too. Good, I was tired of how easy it was to give office.com to users, m365.cloud.microsoft is far more in line for what users expect from an IT experience ;)
It's kind of wild that I couldn't be sure which app they were talking about until I got to the icons though.
Kurosanti@reddit
Copilot key on keyboards is already appearing on fresh hardware
JazzlikeSurround6612@reddit
Jesus.
5yrup@reddit
What's with that M375Copilot domain? I would have assumed that was some spam source.
New-Pop1502@reddit
Haha yes, i even checked for fun for domains that spammers can buy:
Like
microsoft365pilot.com
or
office365copilot.ca
HolyGonzo@reddit
You need to read that message a little closer.
Office isn't being renamed.
CoPilot is being renamed.
They're simply trying to emphasize it as a standalone product rather than just a component of Office.
3percentinvisible@reddit
I think it's the opposite, it was "Microsoft copilot for entra users" and its going to be "Microsoft 365 copilot chat". And they say it's to highlight that m365 is including copilot everywhere. So they're essentially saying "no, it's not a standalone product"
HolyGonzo@reddit
"Standalone" probably wasn't the right term but I think we're on the same page
michaelhbt@reddit
Microsoft Works 365
SkankOfAmerica@reddit
Entra 365 Intune NT MS-Copilot 3.11 for Workgroups
meghanynwa@reddit
Please no :( Yasis I already can’t keep up
It’s MS Intune in my head
GroundCaffeine@reddit
Really just trying to polish a pile of shit to make people believe it’s something new and shiny. As someone who works with Microsoft Products from their Desktop apps to their cloud offering (don’t know what name to use anymore) Microsoft has been a right royal pain in the ass for many months now. Don’t even get me started on their GDAP, CSP & Microsoft Partner shit
jwrig@reddit
They are different products. They are not renames.
LebronBackinCLE@reddit
Maybe they’ll just finally name it “Bullshit” and be done with it lol
Any-Fly5966@reddit
Bullshit 365 has a nice ring
tpwils@reddit
Until it is what describes your life :/
PepperDeb@reddit
Can I still use Internet Explorer?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
damik@reddit
Intune > Endpoint Manager > Intune > Entra Intune Endpoint Manager Copilot?
beanmeister5@reddit
Haha, thats only a small portion of the name changes. For those using the SCCM portion of Endpoint manager, it went from SCCM - CM - MECM -MEMCM - MCM - ConfigMgr all in the space of 4-5 years.
IdidntrunIdidntrun@reddit
more name changes Microsoft, more
New-Pop1502@reddit
Source?
At the moment my understanding is that the branding of the product "Microsoft Copilot for 365" has been rebranded "Microsoft 365 Copilot".
Which is different from the Microsoft 365 base product line.
Background_Ice_857@reddit
i'm just glad it exists and i will be getting more emails that sound like they were written by an english professor with head trauma
Imbecile_Jr@reddit
Microsoft is just fucking exhausting
Bob_Spud@reddit
What are they going call it in places where Copilot is not permitted to be used because of security risks?
Hoosier_Farmer_@reddit
microsoft office 365 copilot with entra onedrive, professional plus, in technicolor!
RabiesTingles@reddit
I will contact to call it M364
cl326@reddit
Not during Leap Years, though.

Bubbagump210@reddit
All of their rebranding is always stupid, unnecessary and confusing.
Syde80@reddit
The different names for Outlook and the fact that some versions are completely different products is a pet peeve of mine.
Jaymesned@reddit
Appears to be changes to the mobile app. For those not able to see admin center:

kg65@reddit
Lmao just for the app, not the whole 365 ecosystem.
Gantyx@reddit
Microsoft please... We're tired... Stop destroying the good things you (sometimes*) do...
TheRescueWhale@reddit
So stupid!
mangonacre@reddit
Looks to me like a lot more than just a logo and name change are happening. The Copooplit section of the M365 Admin Center is nothing more than "Here's how we're fucking with you, and you can't change most of it!"
For example: Copooplit in Teams Meetings brings you to the Teams admin center, where you can turn off Copooplit in Teams meetings. But it even tells you right there that it's meaningless because the meeting organizer can just turn it back on.

It must be very cool to have drunk people in charge of the naming at Microsoft.
ZAFJB@reddit
Not true.
Your reading comprehension is poor.
chubz736@reddit
365 copilot or Microsoft copilot ?
EricJSK@reddit
If i understand this correctly:
Microsoft is only changing the name of the 'Microsoft 365' APP to "Microsoft 365 Copilot app".
This change also includes an overhaul of the UI in the app to promote "AI-first experiences" whatever that means.
UI Change: MC958905
Name Change: MC958903
The Microsoft 365 suite of apps will hopefully keep its current name...
Adziboy@reddit
As far as I know the name change is for Copilot to Copilot 365.
Nothing to do with office 365
EricJSK@reddit
Where did you see this?
