Do you do cross border deliveries to Canada and Mexico?

Just a curiosity I have as someone who's not a trucker.

US-based companies are not allowed to cross into Mexico. Mexico-based companies that have registered with FMCSA are allowed to operate in the US commercial zones so they can transfer trailers between both countries.

Might you know why? Or have a direction you can point me that I may read up on my own?

The US didn't want to open their roads to Mexican trucks, so Mexico did the same. But the US has since opened it to certain Mexican companies. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/international-programs/mexico/mexico-long-haul-program

Thank you very much. Am I reading it incorrectly? It states their is reciprocity, so US domiciled carriers can run into Mexico?

There should've been truck traffic going both ways since NAFTA was signed, but the US blocked Mexican trucks to protect US carriers. Mexico sued and won in 2001, but the US dragged their feet. Meanwhile, US mega companies bought Mexican companies so they could operate in Mexico. Swift, Schneider, etc. now have huge operations in Mexico, but the US is allowing only a few Mexican carriers.

US companies CAN cross--after all, Mexican companies can deliver anywhere in the US, now. The thing is almost no American drivers are willing to go into Mexico.

I've delivered many times to Canada. I've trucked in 4 different provinces. It's great. No complaints. US drivers can only make deliveries about 10 miles into Mexico. I'm not sure what the exact distance is, but I've never done it, although I do know a driver who has. I've dropped plenty of loads right next to the border for a Mexican driver to pick up.  I have driven my personal vehicle about a thousand miles into Mexico. It's doable but not for the faint of heart.

I’ve begged for MX loads. I drive OTR for a mega and live in Tijuana.

I’ve been all over Canada hauling boats. Been to all 10 Provinces, and it’s been an absolute adventure at times. I typically only have issues with US Border people.

No kidding, as a us citizen, Canada looks at my pass port, ask where I’m going and for how long, heads me a hot cup of Tim Hortons and says have a good time. Coming back into the US, border patrol is mad at me for coming back and acts like I have no reason/right to return to the US. They are almost always jackasses. US customs hires only the biggest jerks it can find. Probably a personality profile and aptitude test to make sure you’re never accidentally nice to anyone.

They actually give you Tim Horton's coffee? They've never given me anything.

Yes but here's a little tip, if you tell them you don't drink coffee they'll give you a box of timbits instead.

Yes, been to Canada delivering glass over 200 times. It's like a bizarro world where everything is slightly off.

One of my coworkers used to work at yellow. He'd do Montreal to Buffalo a couple times a week.

I don't. I'm not allowed in Canada, and I'm not getting kidnapped/robbed/killed in Mexico

Used to run daily from MA to Sherbrooke (Quebec if I remember correctly..) Never had any issues luckily. The language barrier was a bit of pain sometimes and not having cell phone service was sketchy in case something went wrong. On of our guys got caught being overweight just over the border and the company had to have another empty truck drive up and shovel a ton of sludge until it passed for weight. I smuggled some poutine potato chips one time across the border and was nervous about it. They always ask if you are bringing anything back with you across the border.

When I ran OTR(98-03) I went into Canada quite often(my very first solo run was Phx-Surrey BC). Never crossed the southern border in a semi, but spent a LOT of time AT the border.

I used to pick up tomatoes in Nogales MX and bring them to Vancouver BC. It was easy and I never had any problems other than a guaranteed truck search at the Canadian border.

Yes and sometimes mexico and Canada drivers cross into us soil As for otr drivers in general I think the majority stay on us soil, its only certain companies and jobs that have you crossing over

Not anymore. 20 years ago, I used to deliver into Ontario. But it was almost b always a pain in the ass with massive downtime while dealing with Customs and brokers. Getting into Canada wasn't usually a problem, except for the long lines at the border. Getting back into the US was almost always a problem. Never delivered to v Mexico, but I used to park at the Petro in El Paso and catch a ride over with Cadillac Man and his crew. There used to be good times over there. Not sure how it is anymore.

Take it to channel 31 for the Cadillac Man.

Curious on the reasoning, but yes a lot of us do cross borders. I deliver to western Canada fairly frequently but avoid eastern Canada as it’s a shit show (except NB and NL those are okay). Mexico no chance in hell, our company won’t even let us do it and will have a drop yard where we sign over and leave it for somebody else to take the risk.

Not in a few years. But I used to make regular trips to Hamilton, Toronto, and Barrie.

used to do Canada with some frequency. Mexico was always a relay at a border transfer yard.
