I'm not sure how obsolete my CPU is (i7 11700k)

I'm gaming on 1440p, 144hz; With an RTX 3080, i7 11700k, 64gb DDR4 RAM.
So, would it be worth it to get a new MOBO and maybe a 9800x3d once the price stabilizes, or maybe hold on until Intel's next generation?
I see benchmarks and people seem to get quite a handful more of FPS with the 9800x3d, but I don't know if the price of acquiring the entire CPU/RAM/PSU/MOBO pack would be justified at all! It'd easily be 800€
always_ftw@reddit
As of 4/26/26: given the state of DDR5 RAM, GPUs, and NVME Storage…you are in good hands.
t90fan@reddit
I wouldn't rush out to upgrade now, it's well matched to that card and both are good enough to play current games pretty well
save your money for another generation

Sounds decent upgrading a pc from those specs isn't going to be game changing i have a z590 gigabyte 64gb of 3200 and a 11700k with 5060ti 16gb and it runs everything great there are better gpus but its just not worth it
Flaky_Ad_3590@reddit
If you want to make a new one, do it by all means.
But the 11700+3080 will serve you well for 3-5y still.
Myself running 11900KF+ 3080

Es buena opción hoy en día ? Me cambian mi Mac mini y una gráfica amd por una pc con una 4060 y el Intel i7- 11700
CircoModo1602@reddit
You poor soul, 11th gen really was a kick in the teeth to the i9 SKU. Was a damn good chip at its release but was sad to see the issues that came due to security patches.
Flaky_Ad_3590@reddit
It is a very good heating element though.
Before that I had 11400F + 1070 for some time.
TraditionalPlatypus9@reddit
You have a solid system and you're looking at least a 1000€ investment for a 20%-25% performance increase with a new PC and the same card. That is benchmarks not necessarily real world performance. You'd be better off waiting for the 50xx super series or waiting for the price to drop even more and get 5080 or 5090. I don't know that the new cards will hold up like your 3080 has.
Economy_Jello4893@reddit
I have an i7-11700K , Rtx 3060 Ti and 64 gb ddr4. Stuff runs amazing still. I’d wait til 2030 tbh. Give yourself some breathing room.

Got a 7800x3d like a few months ago. Honestly, the change was amazing, I don't suffer from stutters in lots of games now, and in CPU intensive games like League of Legends, where I used to have 120-140fps, now I have 360+ FPS (I have it capped), same with CS2, I used to hover 60-90 and now I'm at 180+.
I have a 360hz Monitor, so it's an investment hehe, for me it was worth it :p
Global-Woodpecker-31@reddit
I have the same exact setup. literally the only difference is I only have 32gb DDR4 ram. I came across this post, because I basically had the same question as you. I've had this rig setup for about a year now, and I'm starting to run into performance issues with bigger name titles. Also, EFT is giving me hell out of no where. My FPS is dumping out of no where and my GPU will randomly throttle. Sometimes even when I am not in a GPU intensive part of the game and not in a fire fight. I know the game has some serious optimization issues, but I am starting to notice it with games like MW3. Which I never had issues with before about a month ago. I have been digging deeper into system information software's, trying to pinpoint any kind of specific issues with firmware or hardware even. I am diving into waters I'm not exactly super experienced in, so there is definitely a learning curve. I am also considering the possibility that some of, it not most of, my rig being "obsolete", as you mentioned. I've read a lot of the comments, and I am definitely walking away more informed, which is getting pretty rare with the way people are nowadays. So thanks for that. g

Hey mate! Just wanted to let you know that I upgraded to a 7800x3d recently, and it changed everything, unlike people said. I used to dip to the 60s in league of legends during intense fights, and I never got above 150 fps. Now I get over 300, I also don't have stuttering on any game because the .1% of the 7800x3d is a lot better than in any other CPU. It's freaking amazing, snappy, and revitalized my build.
I definitely see myself using this rig for quite a few years. People were deeply wrong.
I have to tell you that I had troubles setting up windows, I had to change a few settings in the bios and in windows you have to put power limit or percentage limit of the CPU at 99%, otherwise it stutters in windows
FireFalcon123@reddit
If you were doing 1080p500 then a 9800X3D might be the CPU, otherwise I would keep the 11700K
Roserry@reddit
what does it means for 1080p240-500?
FireFalcon123@reddit
Long story short, it is how many fps your monitor can show.
So if your PC can do 100 fps in a game, but you have a 60 hz monitor, you will only ever see 60 fps.
Roserry@reddit
I see, so it's all about refresh rate. currently my rig is 11700k - 3080ti with 1080p 240hz.
I'm a bit confused. do i need to upgrade to 9800x3d or just wait for another years? or i only upgrade my gpu to 4080
FireFalcon123@reddit
Depends on the game
If the 11700K can do 240fps, but the 3080ti can only do 100, I would upgrade the GPU.
If your 11700K can only do 60fps, but the 3080ti can do 240, then I would upgrade the CPU.
Then same thing for 1% and .1% lows, or your smoothness/stuttering.
You would have to look up 2025 reviews for those processors, or see if they are mentioned in big reviews like LTT, H.U.B, Gamers Nexus etc etc.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
You’re still fine for 1440p 144hz
Myself, I’m running a 10700k (same thing as a 11700k basically) + 3080 10gb for 1440p 240hz and honestly the extra FPS the 7800x3d/9800x3d would give me is really tempting since I play everything on low. Even a 7600 would be a nice upgrade. I do regret not going AMD at the time.
Yes our CPUs are a little on slow side but now, but our GPUs are still really good and that’s going to do the bulk of the gaming workload at 1440p. So in your specific case you’re still fine imo.
Roserry@reddit
what if im running on 1080p? currently my rig is i7 11700k with 3080Ti
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
What about it?
You’re definitely being bottlenecked in some games, but I doubt you’re not getting the performance you want
nigirizushi@reddit
It's older, not obsolete, and you probably should just wait and upgrade everything in a few years.
RealTrueGrit@reddit
I found a 2080ti, i7 11700k, 32gb ram, mobo, 1tb nvme, and an aio for 600. Id be coming from an i7 10750h, and a rtx 2070 gaming laptop. I have a case, a nice coraair 850w psu, tons of corsair fans. Would it be worth it to buy that as an upgrade? Theres also a 3080 build for 50 more with a ryzen 5 5500 in it. Id like to upgrade but i feel like theres other options out there.
Al-Dorifto@reddit
I think you're sweet bro I only upgraded from a i7 3770 back in 2021 to a i5-11400 and the i7 3rd gen wasn't that far of being as good as the i5 11th gen so you got the i7 11th gen let's just say I'm trying to pick up a cheap i7 11700k and they are still worth over 300 dam dollars. So I'm probably swapping to AMD but that's mainly for Sim racing since AMD doesn't restrict USB ports unlike Intel
miko115@reddit
In avx512 applications serious performance is to be had when you do Gear 1 ram tuning. I have a 11700(non-k) if you do a lot of work loads that use avx512 I recommend ram tuning. For my specific use case turning off Hyper threading was able to net me more avx512 performance gains in combination with ram tuning. Only several frames were made with ram tuning in games. You have a 11700k, if you are willing to tune ram, and mess around with timings, you will be very surprised. I have b-die ram. After everything my cpu uses over 160 watts when under load and my room turns into a furnace
mr0il@reddit
I just got rid of that chip and replaced it with a ryzen 7 9800x3d and it was an absolutely massive upgrade.
Before getting the new cpu platform, i upgraded my 1070 ti to a 4070 ti super. In rust, my performance went from about 20-30 fps to about 60-70 fps in extremely dense pve servers with a lot of builds. New cpu easily clears 100 fps in those overloaded areas.
I saw gamersNexus call the i7 11700k a “waste of sand” and after upgrading i agree.
sasha055@reddit
Massive upgrade came from 1070 to 4070... CPU did very little for that
mr0il@reddit
I ran the 11700k with the new gfx card and it did a lot, but not nearly as much as the cpu upgrade.
YogurtclosetLivid655@reddit
Im using 11700k in pc build since its launch…but I just recently upgraded my 600 watt psu to 1000 watt one and 3060 to 4070 ti super…and yeah my processor is still 11700k and I believe this config will last me atleast 3 more years before i’ll put my 11700k to a home nas server and will then replace it with whatever that will be the best option in market at that time and then im good for another 10 years.
mr0il@reddit
Home NAS is where my 11700k lives now.
VLAD1M1R_PUT1N@reddit
The 9800X3D is basically the fastest consumer/gaming CPU on the planet, so of course it's faster, but that doesn't make the 11700K "obsolete". Rocket lake was a bad price to performance and in fact performed worse than the older comet lake chips in some scenarios, which is why it was "a waste of sand", but it's still a fine architecture in a vacuum for those who already own it and don't have an urgent need to upgrade.
mr0il@reddit
That’s all agreeable. OP wants to know if it’s worth it, and coming from an 11700k myself, i find it extremely worth it.
9okm@reddit
It's only FOMO. 11700k is perfectly fine.
makegr666@reddit (OP)
True, the 3080 is not what I expected when I bought it. I find it lacking in most titles, Wukong, Silent Hill 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, even Phantasio (and it doesn't really look great either), are a pain in the ass to run properly. I expected to play high settings at 144hz in 1440p, but I have to play medium settings 60fps in most games -.-
9okm@reddit
Hah that mirrors my experience pretty much exactly. I play at Medium now.
Brando6677@reddit
An 11700k should last a while longer. I say when the 5000 series nVidia drops pickup a 4000 series card grated your PSU can take it
Brando6677@reddit
Coming back to say, while I am not 1440 gaming my ryzen 7 2700x and 1660Ti are going strong but I am looking for another PC because I want to stream and this pc won’t cut it for gaming and streaming both are one too intensive
PotentialAnt9670@reddit
3 years ago is old now?
makegr666@reddit (OP)
For 1440p 144hz, yes, I can't even play Stalker 2 at low settings without dipping into the 40s, though that's a badly optimized game. Silent Hill 2 was dipping into the 50s at a combo of high and medium settings.
CircoModo1602@reddit
Welcome to new game performance. UE5 ruins every setup right now for majority of titles. With RT being a necessary inclusion it'll only get worse.
makegr666@reddit (OP)
It does. Wukong was hard to play, had to use DLSS and medium settings for it to be in a playable state!
ibhuiyan@reddit
Well, I am still using i7-9700 and I am not planning to upgrade anytime soon. Then again, I am no gamer so..
monsterfurby@reddit
I'm only now slowly considering replacing my 6700K. i7s have some serious long-term staying power.
imfeelingold@reddit
I was still using a 6700k in February, now my fiancé is using it, I highly doubt that an 11700k is causing you any trouble at all.
Fun-Investigator-306@reddit
It’s good enough. If you want to upgrade gpu to 40 o 50 series, u will need at least 13th gen of intel
maxtaxprutt@reddit
What the fuck 🤣
Darth-LA@reddit
I'm still going with i7 8600K, and I don't feel the rush to upgrade. Enjoy your build, it's good for a few more years :)
Scrudge1@reddit
No none of that is obsolete
maks_b@reddit
Are you having any frame issues on games you're playing or apps you're using? This should be the first question.
Dry-Faithlessness184@reddit
By definition it's obsolete.
That said, that's not something that actually matters. A 7800X3D is obsolete by definition since the 9800X3D exists but is still fine.
As others have pointed out, it's a solid combination. If there's not an actual performance issue, there's no reason to upgrade.
Upgrade when it's no longer doing what you want. If that's not true, just keep saving money.
RockGuitarist1@reddit
I’m on a 9900k and a 3080 and still hitting 180fps in all my games. You’re far from obsolete.
owlwise13@reddit
The 11700k is still decent enough, maybe lowering the details or if you really want to upgrade something, an GPU upgrade with something with more vram. Check out https://gamersnexus.net/ they have several charts. Maybe a 4070 ti Super might be a good fit. Also Hardware Unboxed has a good video about 1440 gaming.
HisAnger@reddit
Honestly no point to upgrade. This is decent config. You can easily last 2 more gens on it
TimmmyTurner@reddit
if you have no problem spending then yea why not
TwiKing@reddit
Sound like it's still a beast. You notice slow downs?
Hungry_Reception_724@reddit
Lol outdated? Why would it be outdated when most gaming pcs still only have 4 cores 8 thread
jatoDeBosta@reddit
Is your setup stopping you from having an enjoyable and smooth experience in the games of your interest?
If not, then there's no reason to upgrade, even if the 11800X3D was out and delivered four times more fps
Sea_Perspective6891@reddit
I was using a 6th gen i7 for a few years before finally building my 12th gen i5 PC so a 11700K is still mostly decent long as it's not showing signs of failure or slowing down much. I'd give it a few more generations then just do a fresh new build when you can afford to do one.
eaglw@reddit
Im with 11600kf and 3080 12gb. Playing in 3440x1440. I would like to have more core for various application but I would justify the upgrade only if there are also gaming improvements..
StConvolute@reddit
I'm running the same specs but with an i9 10-850. I have no plans to upgrade soon. It's still running all my games and keeps up with work.
ecktt@reddit
Your CPU is fine. Especially as the 3080 isn't going break any record with 10GB of VRAM at 1440p.
