What could be looked back on as a “how did that happen” in 100+ years time?

Watching a history programme and they talked about slavery etc and it’s crazy that things like that happened (and still do). What do you think goes on now that could be another WTF how did that happen, in 100+ years or so?
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
Covid is the obvious one to me.

My other half keeps saying that I’m being dramatic when I bring it up, but it’s definitely going to go down as one of those “where were you when…” questions your kids ask you.
I vividly remember being on a job in France of all places and uttering the exact words “how, in the actual fuck, did we even get to this point…” when I couldn’t fly home for 2 and a half months because all the borders were shut.

In what way?
We learned lessons from the Spanish Flu, they helped infirm responses to Covid. The more of these events we live through, the better we get at dealing with them.
I imagine future generations will judge us as 'unprepared' rather than 'wrong'
Scav_Construction@reddit
Future generations will not know we were duped into giving up two years of our lives on the back of the flu.
gdrlee@reddit
Yeah. I guess I don't see the argument that our leaders were machiavellian rather than incompetent.
Forward-Net-8335@reddit
Everything got more expensive after covid, because the people on top realized we'd do anything we're told.
gdrlee@reddit
I'm not sure what part of "Covid" you're reacting to here, but it feels like you have a firmer stance on it than I do.
Forward-Net-8335@reddit
On top of the two years we all lost, I gave another two looking after someone with a blood clot. Your feelings may be right.
gdrlee@reddit
I totally get that Covid times were weird, but I struggle with a narrative more convoluted than "we didn't know what the fuck we were doing"
HonestAfternoon8993@reddit (OP)
Yes 100%, this was my thought too. Even seeing photos of the queuing outside supermarkets etc now makes me think, HOW.

To be clear here, I am NOT trying to attack anyone's dietary choices, however, I think the scale of animal suffering that goes into our meat industry as it exists today will be considered ethnically repugnant in the future.
I do not specifically mean the eating of meat, but rather the nature of factory farming and the well documented abuse and pain that the animals go through. We now mostly accept that animals are sentient beings that feel pain and fear, but even in the UK, where our animal ethical standards are far better than most of the world, the scale of the suffering going on every day is hard to comprehend. It's so awful that people who work in that industry often end up with mental problems from what they see and have to do.
throwtheway52@reddit
The planet cannot literally sustain the mass consumption of animals. Lab grown meat is on the way, and I hope it brings about some revolution, a moment in history, where people in the far future would be like how did they consume animals in such a way? I hope so at least
Forward-Net-8335@reddit
I'd love to see us bring the animals we eat closer the average life. It wasn't all that long ago raising chickens was a very normal thing. It was a little longer back for the family cow, but it would be a nice direction to aim towards. Of course, that would require some common land....

I get this. It is something we turn a blind eye to right now.

Been thinking whilst looking at the replies. Mine would be: - Deforestation, especially for things like palm oil etc. - ignoring or disbelieving global warming. - the rise of social media - Corruption
First-Banana-4278@reddit
Meat or large scale personal car use.
Assuming we make it long enough as a civilisation/species for other of these to happen.

How flippant we are with our plastic usage, and our overall consumption of cheap stuff that our planet cannot literally sustain…

Social media.
Climate change.
...If we manage to get past them with the capacity to reflect on them.
HonestAfternoon8993@reddit (OP)
Social media is interesting. I work with young people and support them with well-being. The “freedom” and lack of protection we give young people is crazy.
Ok-Train5382@reddit
I don’t know if you want to restrict them or not but like, people are capable of sorting themselves with this, whether they do or not Is personally agency
HonestAfternoon8993@reddit (OP)
Not really. When you look at the development of the adolescent brain and then also look at parents and peers being glued to phone, we raise young people to believe social media and technology is a priority in life. And then all the fake/edited images, videos and unrealistic life achievements all add up to cause pure confusion. It’s sad to see.
kamemoro@reddit
maybe it's not the most outrageous thing out there, but i'm keeping my fingers crossed for horse racing.
AJMurphy_1986@reddit
Those horses live better lives than most people.....
HonestAfternoon8993@reddit (OP)
I’d imagine there’s too much money in this, but I do get your point. Riding animals and people betting who’s the fastest.
