ULPT: I live in Thailand. Our neighbour's intact male cat invades my property often in the wee hours to terrorise my neutered cats. It's been a year since we informed the owner but his asshole cat is still intact and invading our house.

We adopted a pair of incredibly sweet brothers a year ago, and it has been a joy to watch them grow up. The problem is our kitties were neutered early and lack any of the male instincts to fight or defend themselves.
They live in our garage at night because that’s where their cat tower, wall, litter box and houses are. And they were strays before so they enjoy being outside at night but they are leashed (at night) and always stay within our property.
However, quite often in the wee hours, my neighbour’s big intact male will drop in to terrorise them and assert dominance. Of course we’re quite distressed seeing our boys getting terrorised so often while cowering in their houses. Watching it live on our cameras just makes it so much worse. We’ve spoken to our neighbours but they brushed us off with the typical Thai style saying it’s just cats being cats. They didn’t bother to offer any solutions and say that this is just how Thai people care for their cats. They’re allowed to roam and they like having their male intact.
After a year of watching my two boys freak out on CCTV, I’m sick of my inability to act.
I was hoping to brainstorm a solution with this community. Any ideas?
Icy_Elephant2477@reddit
Kidnap the cat and have him neutered. It’s so irresponsible having an intact free roaming cat
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
I agree but that’s just how Thais view cat ownership here. They only provide food, water and shelter. Most people are too poor to bring their cats to the vet. They just toss it back to the street when they can no longer support them.
My two boys were abandoned by another neighbour a few houses away. Tig was dumped in favour of a pedigree while Tiger came along because they were a bonded pair. But the owner completely neglected Tiger. When we first adopted him, I wasn’t sure if he was gonna make it. He was severely malnourished. He’s a fatty now and doing well but has a compromised immune system because of how bad his first 5 months on this Earth were. Makes me wanna cry when I think about how much he suffered before we picked him up. Sorry I know it’s silly to think like that.
Fluid_Ask2636@reddit
One thing that you need to keep in mind is that the cats needs to be given antibiotics after neutering. Plus, if the owner finds out he can take you to court for damage to his “property”. Make it discreet, keep the cat somewhere safe while it recovers and release once it’s fully healed.
ConcentratePretend93@reddit
I have done dozens of trap and releases. Antibiotics are not prescribed.
NurseKaila@reddit
When I’ve done TNR they’ve always given a shot of antibiotics plus a long-acting pain medication.
ConcentratePretend93@reddit
Rabies, anti- flea and parasite. No pain or ABs.
youcantseeme0_0@reddit
I just did a quick search, but look into Soi Dog. They spay/neuter strays and even have mobile teams. They might be able to do it for free, if they're in your area.
redskelton@reddit
Nothing silly at all. We're all pretty much the same here
Realistic_Curve_7118@reddit
These concepts of responsibility concerning animals do not exist in Thailand. This is a Western construct that they cannot absorb. First mistake in 3rd world countries is to project our Western ideas onto the people. Honestly, they have no way of understanding you. Besides you are the guest there. So just keep smiling when in Rome.

Thank you, I was looking for someone to post this. The entire post reeks of entitlement. OP has moved to another country and now wants everyone to adapt to his way of life. But I bet he'd kick off about immigrants coming into his home country and trying to enforce Sharia or halal food on everyone

You could trap and neuter the owner, then set him free.

MartinSRom@reddit
I have had the same problem. I got my hands on a trap, a cage with a mechanism that closes the door when something gets inside. The first cat caught was my own boy. Then my other cat got caught too. Nothing happened to them, I released them almost immediately.
But then, one night I got something. The neighbor cat slept in jail that time, and in the morning I sprayed him generously with cold water. And it worked. To this day I haven't seen that asshole cat in my backyard again.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
Perfect…exactly what I’m thinking. I’ve already placed an order for a trap.
Sideshow_G@reddit
If this fails add a little chilli oil.. ONLY get a little on its fur, not his nose or eyes.. he will have a hard time kicking it off.

phard003@reddit
Trap and release but instead of getting it neutered, spray that asshole with liquid ass or something akin to skunk pheromone. Anything that will make that cat rank AF. The owners will want nothing to do with it after a few experiences in which case you can collect it and take it to a shelter or they will start to keep the cat inside at night as well.
jackaldude0@reddit

Trap the cat, neuter it at a vet from the neighboring town just to make sure if his owner starts asking around. Keep it for a few days or pay the vet to keep it till it's healed, then you release him back. Owner might not even notice.
HamBroth@reddit
Keep your cats indoors?
outerrealm@reddit
If you could get away with it that MIGHT solve the problem, but no guarantees as to how much it would actually change the behavior. Removing the hormones might not 100% change ingrained behavior which the cat has developed. That said, beyond totally physically securing your property this is probably the only thing you can do. All you have to do is use one of your cats as bait, 5555, just kidding of course. Leave a menu out so that your marauder can choose, then serve it up in the trap. I can't think of anything else save turn your cats into indoor cats. Good luck

My great grandfather would trap cats, throw them in burlap sacks, and attach to the car's exhaust. No more kitty, pretty traumatizing for me really, but effective.
DecadentHam@reddit
I've been in your boat here with a dog and I live in Thailand as well. We kidnapped the nrighbours dog, got it neutered and vaccinated. The owner didn't notice or chose to ignore the fact that he no longer had balls.
Should state it was a street dog that the neighbour fed but it was a terror. It settled down after that and stopped jumping in our yard.
mayonaissewins@reddit

You could fence a cat enclosure to keep your cats safe. 2 x 2’s and chicken wire work fine. Or use “stucco wire” for a better look over all.
HarambeWasTheTrigger@reddit
Jesus, OP is a pet owner not a prison warden
supermanlazy@reddit
OP has already said he leashes the cats at night. Cat proofing the area would stop them neighbour cat getting in but also have the benefit that he wouldn't need to be abusive and leave the cats leashed up overnight.
exotics@reddit
When I lived in the city we had a cat enclosure for our cats. They could come and go freely inside the house via a kitchen window. The city had laws that cats couldn’t leave your property and my neighbor threatened to kill them so ya..
lacrimosa_707@reddit
Take the cat, neuter it, if the owner asks anything say "idk man, your cat is roaming freely" and then when the cat gets better bring it out.
This will solve you problem, and probably prolong that cats life as sterile cats on average tend to live longer
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
Might be difficult to keep an unfamiliar cat hidden for a week while it’s yowling away. I’ve neutered both my cats and it’s not an easy time during those first few days after surgery.
lacrimosa_707@reddit
I mean, you already have cats. If anyone asks you say the yoodling are your cats. As for the money, it seems like a fair price to pay for some peace and quiet
Whitegreen060@reddit
I think they're different ways of neutering. When we did the male kittens they were out quick and they still had their balls. I think they've e tied something inside.
Maybe look into it? Cuz they were fine after that with no problems or having to wear a cone.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
Nah, my boys had their testicles removed but their scrotum remained intact. I think that’s just how they do it here. Anyways they weren’t themselves for about a week because I had to keep them contained to not aggravate the incision.
KarmicPotato@reddit
If that annoying cat is not quite itself afterwards, that's not your problem. This is unethical tips y'all.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
Bottom line, I don’t wanna pay for someone else’s cat to be neutered. It costs just $25 but why do I gotta pay for someone to continue being an idiot cat owner?
Lex_Magnus@reddit
You're an idiot just the same. I do TNR where I live and spend $10k+ a year out of my own money because I love cats and I want them to live a happy life.
foln1@reddit
See it as charity by stopping the suffering of future kitties on the streets.
Lex_Magnus@reddit
This is stupid position OP. Firstly, neutering male cats is very simple operation. They just need to be monitored for 24h. Secondly, do you love your cats more than money? You're doing this for them, not your dumb neighbour. And lastly, stealing is a crime in most countries including Thailand.
Outrageous-Panic-165@reddit

Con-D-Oriano1@reddit
Your cats won’t fight back, but you can. Get one of these and assert dominance. The gel shouldn’t cause any lasting injuries, but it will send the message.
outerrealm@reddit
Beyond securing your property so that entry isn't possible there's not much you can do. There is little or no awareness in Thailand about neutering and aggression in cats. It's too bad I don't live near you, I could assist in that - I have a lot of carpentry and other experience from owning an old house for 40 years.
1976warrior@reddit

I just shoot them. .22 bolt action rifle is pretty quiet. One shot takes out a cat. Try to time it for day before garbage pickup day. Toss it in the trash can.

Bring over a roast for your neighbors.
After they eat it, let them know what they ate, and let them know that their cat will be terrorizing their intestines soon, 🔜 and will no longer be bothering your cats.

Realistic_Curve_7118@reddit
Thailand is my 2nd home. We lived there for 15 years so I can tell you with assurance the only thing you can do in Thailand is kill the offending cat. Usually by poison. There is no conversation, no discussion, no negotiation with Thais over things like this. Especially concerning animals. I've had my dogs poisoned many a time and it is the only way Thai's will understand and accept issues with animals. It's just not in their DNA. SERIOUSLY. And if you push the issue or raise your voice you are in great danger of making your neighbors "LOSE FACE". This is the worst shit you can get in with Thai's. If they feel disrespected there are no limits to what they feel they have a right to do. It's crazy. I know people who have been killed over the stupidest shit imaginable. So you either change your cat situation or you kill their cat and dispose of the body very far away. TELL NO ONE AND NEVER SPEAK OF IT AGAIN. Use your Thai smile ,wai high, and pretend nothing ever happened. It's the Thai way. Please believe me.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
This is the way…you have truly spent some time in Thailand.
Purple-Clerk-8165@reddit
Can you leave tinfoil on the ground where he gets in? The noise it makes should scare him to death and he won't return. This works for dogs jumping on couches.
Ornery_Gate_6847@reddit
Maybe I'm a monster but when random animals come on my property and attack my animals, I shoot them. When a neighbor says "well I can't stop him" I just say don't worry, I can. People usually wise up and become responsible for their pets

Take the cat and get him fixed. I know you said in another comment you're fishing for other ideas, but this is literally the best option tho. You can also put some motion activated water sprinklers where the cat is creeping in as a deterrent. Or buy some elephant urine online. Cats can smell the size of other animals in their urine, so he'd likely stay far away if you put some on the corners of your property.

My take on it? Bring your cats in at night and get motion activated sprinklers to keep that Tom away. Maybe build a cateo.
Have you talked to the owners? Would they be receptive to you paying to get him neutered?
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
I don’t want to have to pay for someone else’s responsibility. There are other cats that drop by occasionally to bully my boys but this particular Tom is the most egregious of them all. Probably just gonna trap it and pass it on to a shelter.
littlerosepose@reddit
Sounds like your cats just need to be indoors tbh
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
When they’re outdoors, they’re not really ‘outdoors’. We made a catio in the garage for them under shelter. It’s just not enclosed because I want them to have access to the garden and ponds whenever they want.
Super_Reading2048@reddit
So a cateo that protects your cats and motion activated sprinklers to secure your yard for your cats is paying for other people’s cats?
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
In your post you asked me to ask the neighbour if he would be ok with me paying to get his cat neutered. I don’t want to do that because that’s the Tom’s owner’s job. Not mine.
Super_Reading2048@reddit
I mentioned a few options and also mentioned that some cats are just bullies. I do know know neutered cats get in less fights should the owner pay for it? Absolutely. Will they pay for it? Probably not. So now what will you do?
A cateo will protect your cats.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
I think trapping it and dropping it off at a shelter is the most humane option for everyone involved. Owner doesn’t give a scheisse about his cat anyway.

If you don't wann kill it then why come here? Either get rid of it permanently or capture it and drop it off in the jungle. Or trap the cat while its in your territory and vacuum circles around it while screaming for 10 minutes so it can be traumatized.

Try locating where the cat comes from/enters through. From there you have two options:

2) add motion-activated sprinklers, that trigger a short blast of water, hopefully teething the cat off
HarambeWasTheTrigger@reddit
you forgot #3... set bobcat trap
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
I actually have one of those motion sprinklers but this option is nullified by the fact that my own cats use my yard which is exactly where the asshole cat enters. I’ve cut off his escape route but he’s just way too fast for me. I wouldn’t know what to do even if I caught him. I’ll probably need stitches though. Cats are all claws and teeth when you’re not a familiar human.

Knillawafer98@reddit
Honestly, if you want to let your cats roam in your yard at night unsupervised, it's probably safer to fence it in regardless. even without this butthead neighbor cat, there are other animals and messed up people around who might attack or steal your precious boys. that would also mean they don't have to wear leashes which i imagine they don't particularly enjoy. i would build the fence taller than human height and then putting chicken wire or mesh at the top so nothing can climb in and your cats cant climb out. then they can enjoy the outside and you can sleep peacefully knowing they are safe from whatever might be around.

I think you need to learn to read. It’s the past YEAR. Meaning less than a year. Cats are kept within my walled in property with locked gates!
Thailand only has no kill shelters because of their Buddhist faith. The cat would be better off because the current owner doesn’t bring it to the vet at all. I’m not even sure if it has the proper vaccinations. Vet visits are considered a chore and a waste of money for most pet owners here.
Natural_Equivalent23@reddit

A laudable concern. Is there a group you can report "strays" to that will neuter and release? There are state organizations like that around me that capture feral cats and fix them to control the population and try to protect bird and other native species from them.
Another idea - you could set a live animal trap with some catnip and take him to get fixed, not sure what the laws are like in Thailand around this.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
Laws don’t work in this third world country. When you can get away with literal murder by paying the police and judges off, I think kidnapping a cat par for the course.

Where in Thailand are you? There are a lot of animal welfare orgs dotted about that would likely come and pick the cat up and neuter it (you probably don’t want to tell them it’s your neighbours’ cat though).
Or, take the cat when no one is looking, drive 20 miles / to the other side of the island whatever and offload it.
The other method the Thai’s are quite fond of is putting down poison, but that says more about them.
mando_jango_mango@reddit (OP)
I hate this asshole cat for terrorising my ‘kids’ but killing isn’t an option unless it’s violent. He hasn’t caused any damage yet, just a lot of chest puffing. Yes, I’m thinking of trapping it and dropping it off at a shelter. Not sure if I can do that anonymously?
The-all-seeing-pie@reddit
The shelter I volunteered with would take calls from people about whatever animal needed help/was being a problem and they’d just come and deal with it. Animal ownership is a vague concept to most Thai’s… unless we’re taking about chickens. For god’s sake don’t mess with their chickens.
