Top Gear S08E05. Sir Michael Gambon explains why he stopped being gay. This is when they had brilliant studio guests.

Am I stupid I don't get the joke
CaptainZaysh@reddit
You don't stop being gay, he just said that to mess with the interviewer. And there is no actual reason it would make your eyes water. Again, he just said that to messw with the interviewer. The joke is that Gambon thought the interviewer had asked a stupid question, so he gave him mocking, silly answers in a deadpan manner.
Temporary_Brain_8909@reddit
Being gay was too feminine for him and he cried a lot.

Which one? TG itself, or Sir Michael Gambon?
elefrhino@reddit
Yes
ThatOneUpittyGuy@reddit
He was definitely no saint
Ghost_of_Revelator@reddit
For anyone who would like to see why Michael Gambon was considered one of the greatest actors of his time, check out The Singing Detective (the TV miniseries, not the film).

I really miss the guest celebrity interviews from TG. I learned a lot about UK television from Top Gear. If not for TG I probably never would have seen Little Britain, QI: Quite Interesting, Marion and Geoff, Would I Lie To You?, and a few more I am forgetting. I would never have known who Seasick Steve was, or Ross Noble, or John Bishop, and many others. I also miss the interviews with F1 drivers.
I miss the live crowd, too. The Star In A Reasonably Priced car. I even miss The Cool Wall.
BFNentwick@reddit
Loved the cool wall!
mpg111@reddit
that's why I'm always surprised when many people are saying here that they always skip the interviews
Wallio_@reddit
They are so hit or miss. For everyone like this, you get an Ellen MacArthur interview that goes way overtime and takes up 1/3 of an otherwise good show.
mpg111@reddit
of course some were bad - but he's a good interviewer. And I remember Ellen MacArthur one - that was the first time I heard about her, and it was interesting

I also learned that there were Americans famous enough in GB top be on TG, that weren't famous here.
Like Rich Hall or Seasick Steve.
codece@reddit
Or Reginald Hunter.
Rich Hall actually was pretty famous in the US in the 80s, as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, and for his "sniglets" books. He was on David Letterman and Johnny Carson a lot too.
But then by the mid-90s he kind of disappeared. I was surprised to find out he had a career revival in the US.
bookon@reddit
Yes he was famous then, I should have been clearer.
Apprehensive_Bug_172@reddit
Didn't he say they copied him for the Simpsons bartender guy? I might be misremembering.
brazilish@reddit
Seasick Steve is a regular at UK festivals. I first saw him in 2011!
bookon@reddit
You wouldn’t find many Americans who’ve heard of him.
I have a bunch of obscure musicians I listen to so I’m sure he has fans, I’d just never heard of him outside of TG.
UndreamedAges@reddit
Some athletes for sure in sports that aren't popular there. Jay Ajayi, although he moved here young.
Luol Deng.
John Oliver definitely fits this.
Charlie Hunnam. Hell, most people probably don't even know he's English.
brokencig@reddit
The Brits simply have the best panel shows. QI, Would I Lie To You, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown just make me jealous. I hate American TV, only things I can stand to watch are those really old game shows. I'm so happy so much of British TV is available on YouTube.
UndreamedAges@reddit
Taskmaster is the absolute best.
Apprehensive_Bug_172@reddit
I love Greg Davies and Alex Horne, but I don't get that show.
Markorver@reddit
Post the fastest lap around the Top Gear track in this reasonably priced car. Your time starts now.
brokencig@reddit
Yeah I think that's the best show to discover new comedians. I'm glad New Zealand was able to do a version of it too as that was entertaining too.
Matangitrainhater@reddit
That second season was just pure chaos
bootstraps_bootstrap@reddit
Not a panel show but goggle box is way more fun than it has any right to be.
brokencig@reddit
What's it about?
IronSkywalker@reddit
It's literally watching people watch TV
bootstraps_bootstrap@reddit
Basically, people sit around and watch English/UK tv shows and react to them. It sounds awful but it’s hilarious
dparag14@reddit
It was indeed the best time in TV automotive journalism. Can’t believe it’s been so long that these guys have now retired. I think we’ve witnessed history.
LesserKnownDruid@reddit
Is seasick Steve not well known in the States?
I think Jools Holland had a lot to do with his fame over here as he featured on the yearly new year's ever show hosted by Jools.
UndreamedAges@reddit
It's hard for him to make the trip over here.
PzykoHobo@reddit
No rails for him to ride across the ocean.
pogonotrophistry@reddit
I first saw Seasick Steve on Top Gear. Today, I have most of his albums and I rotate them often. I love his story, and I love the stories he tells on his albums.
Prestigious-Box7511@reddit
All I want to know is wtf is Seasick Steve and why is he so famous in the UK
CalFlux140@reddit
The interviews on TG were so special.
Idk why, but when the grand tour came around, they were just...not right.
Wasn't the same. Almost everything they did in the tent was meh. There were some good moments for sure but something was missing. Other than the three semi retiring, I think Amazon noticed it and hence pushed a move to more challenges and specials.
ThisGuyKnowsNuttin@reddit
To be fair, the celebrity segment had been getting stale at TG before it too. As the show became much bigger, everybody wanted to be invited and Jeremy just wasn't great at hiding it when he didn't care much for the "celebrity". A classic cringe one is Will.I.Am (of the Black Eyed Peas). To me, that's Top Gear's Scott's Tots.
GenXpert_dude@reddit
The Will I Am interview was ridiculous- they kissed his ass when that whole thing about his "accomplishments" were bogus. He never built a car factory or made a car- he had a badly customized delorean made, but told TG it was the car he was going to manufacture.
ThisGuyKnowsNuttin@reddit
And Jeremy clearly just wanted to get through this and be done. It was so uncomfortable and fake.
hughk@reddit
The GT were being too wary of the BBC lawyers and tried to create a distinct format. The other thing is that some of the stars were on TG timed to go with a book or film release or a tour. The Amazon format didn't really work with that.
FriskyDingoOMG@reddit
I found few in the tent moments funnier than when Daniel Ricciardo fell into the hoverboat fan blade and because a red streak on the windows 😂

Why do I not remember this part of the interview? Is this bit cut when shown on Dave?

Can't offer an insight. Sorry mate.
