My landlord said he will keep the deposit, but he has to pay the utilities anyone knows a good way of increasing the bill i have 10 days left, to use as much electricity as possible. But i would like to hide something in one of the outlets that's uses a lot of electricity.
Vast-Control-332@reddit
Use the oven to heat the house. And also use the heater to preheat the oven. Just turn everything on. Amd leave the fridge open

You can't mine Bitcoin without significant prep and investment. Better to just borrow every friend's PC to mine any GPU based coin, Raven, etc.

You can’t PROFITABLY mine bitcoin without prep and investment. But any pc can mine crypto if all you want is heat.

^ Yuuuup, I work in renewable energy and these are the answers. Anything that requires a lot of computing power or light will use a metric fuckton of energy. Benefit from mining bitcoin is that you can actually make a decent chunk of change from your mining system minting new coins.

DanCoco@reddit
I mean if the electric is free, the efficiency might not be as important, right?

Yeah, it's just the tens of thousands of dollars in equipment...

I still shoot myself in the foot when i see the graph and could have mined "just a little" years ago in the beginning when a basic pc was possible.

I heard about it at a presentation when Bitcoin was at $1. My takeaway was, all the problems with cash, none of the security of banks.
sloth_jones@reddit
Same except I learned about it at $.03

Same. I had the choice of mining or running the SETI screensaver, so for 10+ years I obviously wasted a lot of electricity processing noise from space.

I had a scumbag landlord in college that tried to fuck us over on multiple occasions. Mining Bitcoin was my way of fucking him over for once. Per the lease the electric bill was a flat fee every month, so I had my PC mine Bitcoin throughout the night. The added bonus was it kept my room a bit warmer during a pretty cold winter.
This was back when GPU mining was still profitable. Sadly I encrypted my hard drive and lost my backup header to it, or something idk this was back when I had a lot more tech knowledge, so I'll never be able to access whatever I mined 😭

If he's already keeping the deposit, what's keeping you from say hypothetically smearing the walls with shit
BFIT232323@reddit
The deposit is usually to cover minor damages. You are still on the hook for any damage above your deposit.
waetherman@reddit
The deposit isn't the limit of the damages a landlord can charge you for - they can sue you for damages beyond what the deposit covers. Also, a renter can still be criminally charged with destruction of property if the damage to the property is intentional and malicious.
Atothekio@reddit
Hit em with the ole piss discs and milk injections 1-2 combo
vagabond139@reddit
That's too obvious. Put some shrimp in the shower curtain. Put some in the vent.
If you really want to go above and beyond just punch a hole in the wall and toss some fish, meat, and milk in there, patch it, and paint it. If you patch and paint good they will never ever figure out where the horrible smell is coming from. The smell will absolutely leak through and be horrid. The landlord will go nuts trying to find it. And they will have to tear down the whole wall to make sure it is all out once they do figure it out.
If you want to crank things up to nuclear level do it in every single wall and the ceiling. It cost you a bit in supplies and time but they would have to basically gut the entire place. You'll do way more damage to them than to yourself. It will cost him thousands upon thousands between labor cost, supply cost, and having a unrentable apartment.
SparkyJesus@reddit
Shit in a freezer bag, freeze it. Take the bag out of the freezer , smash it up, and sprinkle frozen shit glitter everywhere. Into vents, cracks in floorboards, on top of lightbulbs.
Alternatively you can get an acid at most hardware stores that eats away only metal. If you have a closed heating system (central heating over here in the UK), you can depressurise it, add the acid, repressurise. In diluted amounts it'll take a while to eat through, but new tenants can't be blamed for pipes fracturing and the ENTIRE system will have to be replaced either at once, or gradually over time. Either way it'll cost the landlord an absolute fortune.
shadowsoze@reddit
Bro shit glitter is just diabolical, here i was just going to suggest to take a shit in the vent but that's just crazy.
SparkyJesus@reddit
It works well to sprinkle on someone's car too. Has amazing results when sprinkled onto wipers, door window seals and the scuttle. :D
CoderJoe1@reddit
Open light switch covers and outlets to drop sardines, fish or shrimp into the walls. Leave raw potatoes in the horizontal air ducts, it will take them much longer to become smelly.

madl_bz@reddit
Run it on ‘emergency heat,’ or ‘aux heat,’ whichever your thermostat says. This will strictly run the heat strips without the heat pump, if your HVAC has a heat pump. Run it as high as possible. If you have any confidence in wiring, you can jumper at the thermostat (or at the unit) R to Y while running your heat, that will simultaneously run your AC. This will absolutely cause the compressor to run and short cycle, which will also raise your bill, while simultaneously damaging the equipment for a surprise expense after you’ve moved out.
Youdontknowme1771@reddit
Don't do that it will fuck more with the neighbors than the landlord. There was a landlord in Brooklyn who was trying to move people out, so he put rotting fish in several empty apartments, the health department had to become involved since the smell was so unhealthy. Unless you hate all your neighbors, then have at.
mikemonk2004@reddit
Go with Honey instead. Drizzle it down the walls, behind appliances, etc. It won't smell, but it will attract SOOOO many bugs. Also consider the same with veggies, carrots and the like, shred them and put them in the same places.

iburstabean@reddit
Do it on the last day after you've moved everything out and it's empty lmao what
PonyThug@reddit
Then it uses $5 in electricity lol. Whats the point then
chr0nicallych_ill@reddit
Do not turn your oven on and leave it open if it is gas powered as it may cause carbon monoxide buildup.
ER_Kat@reddit
But electric oven is fine tho right? Had a girlfriend who's heater didn't work and would use her oven to warm up her home. She lived in a studio apt. I found it odd and just thought it was unsafe
chr0nicallych_ill@reddit
Electric ovens do not produce carbon monoxide and can be used in a pinch if you are in danger of hypothermia. But I would definitely suggest investing in a space heater rather than using an oven, because space heaters can be more efficient in heating the home and use less electricity in doing so, so the upfront cost ($25 or so where I am) is worth the investment over time.
GoldieRosieKitty@reddit
Wait, what? Even if it's on and heating? I've turned it on and left it cracked open a bit at the top when my furnace did dumb stuff before

RectumExplorer--@reddit
Fridge won't do much in 10 days, running washers and dryers all the time on max temp will do A LOT more.
Different-Phone-7654@reddit
You can destroy a fridge by flipping it on its side. The coolant will leave the compressor and the compressor will go kaput.
alek_vincent@reddit
The best way is placing it on it's side for a few hours just to make sure the coolant isn't where it should be and then when you're done plug it back in and place it right side up. The compressor will shit itself and no way to say it was your fault
RectumExplorer--@reddit
I deliver appliances and sideways won't always harm the fridge. In fact, we have several vans and some of them don't have room to transport them upright, so we lay them down.
You have to make sure you flip it the "right" way to kill it, meaning check the back to see where the line is going from compressor to coil. You gotta flip it so oil drains from compressor to coil, then turn it on immediately and even then it will probably still work, just make more noise.
Different-Phone-7654@reddit
Yep.
OGmoron@reddit

MugshotMarley@reddit

rcuadro@reddit

Stock-Enthusiasm1337@reddit
To follow what someone else said. A space heater will use almost as much power as one circuit will allow. 1500 watts at 110v is approximately 15amps.
So one space heater per circuit is going to be pushing the most power you can possibly pull.
You may actually find that you trip the main breaker if you do this because it isn't generally expected that every circuit in the house will be using the maximum amount of power it can draw at any one time.
RepublicOfLizard@reddit
I once accidentally plugged my tiny space heater and tiny griddle into the same outlet and tripped my breaker, so do with that information what you will

I lived in a apartment in a “remodeled” old 1800’s hotel. They replaced all the outlets with GFCI outlets - that had no ground wire connected.
Also pretty sure some of the wiring was still cloth insulation. Maybe that was an “upgrade” too, from sheep intestine or smth lol.
CptMuffinator@reddit
Space heaters are so bad for that I use a battery backup to protect my main circuit and even with it's own breaker dedicated to it in the battery backup it sometimes trips that.
averysadlawyer@reddit
Keep in mind that you will almost certainly be liable for this, not the landlord. This sort of behavior would fall under waste, which is always assigned to the tenant in any lease I've ever seen.
mrbjangles72@reddit
Carbon emissions? Pffft fuck my landlord.
Streetdoc10171@reddit
If you have a heat pump take the thermostat off the wall and disconnect the yellow wire. This will force it to use the electric heat strips all of the time. Thats 10-20 Kw there
blockneighborradio@reddit
If they have a traditional heating/cooling system. Running the air conditioning when it's cold out will not only use a ton of electricity, it will also damage the compressor.
ftwes@reddit

Why ruin your towel? You can always just run the dryer empty.
earth_west_420@reddit
That's a great way to ruin your drier and/or start a house fire, dude.
earth_west_420@reddit
Also, a fully soaked towel is gonna take even a great-working brand new drier at least a couple hours to dry. Keep in mind that when you actually do laundry everything gets spin dried at high RPMs before you throw them in the drier, so even a washered towel is gonna be significant drier than a soaked towel, even if you wring it out pretty well by hand itll still be significantly more wet than one coming out of a washer. (Source: Ive actually pretty much done this, but it was because of a burst water pipe, not for revenge)

Most homes have 15a rated circuits, and at 110 V, that's about 1600w.
The solution is 3 1200w heaters all on their own circuit.
BreathesUnderwater@reddit
Don’t nitpick. Your more-right answer doesn’t mean mine is wrong.
A 20 amp branch circuit isn’t unheard of, and I prefer to use nominal 120v. 2kW at 120v is 16.6 amps, just a half an amp over 80% of rated circuit for a full time load.
RickMuffy@reddit
You would need to have a 20a rated outlet, with 20a wiring. It's not nitpicking, it's standard code for houses these days. Plugging in more than 15a is basically you giving OP an ULPT because it could cause the place to burn down.
BreathesUnderwater@reddit
That’s why we have 20a rated breakers and 15a rated breakers.
Have a 20a branch circuit? Great - it will also include 12 gauge wiring and 20-amp rated devices. Does your heater require a 20 amp circuit to run? Great, it will include the appropriate NEMA 5-20P plug on the end at minimum.
This isn’t as complicated or uncommon as you’re describing.
RickMuffy@reddit
What im saying is that there's almost no chance there's a 20a circuit available outside of maybe a garage or outside, they're traditionally only put in when there's a known need for them, and they often have a dedicated circuit since you can't have multiple devices plugged in if you're expecting a 20a load on 12/2 wire
BreathesUnderwater@reddit
That’s a fair point

TurtleSandwich0@reddit
No. You were right with the window.
The space heater would quickly heat up the small space of the fridge and it would take a long time for the fridge to dispel the heat. Assuming that the space heater has a thermostat and will shut off at the specified temperature.
You could leave the refrigerator door open and have a space heater blow out the window. That would maximize the consumption of both appliances.
If there is an attic area with a light or an outlet, the space heater could consume energy even after OP moves out. It would run until the space heater broke, someone checks the attic, or the building burns down from overheated electrical wires.
i-am-foxymoron@reddit
The one I'm talking about is 1,000 watts and consists of 2 lights. The space heater idea is good except I don't think you can rent a space heater, but you can rent an industrial light. But if OP has a portable heater already then he's set.

Lol, construction lights do not cost $150 an hour in electricity. Not even 50¢ an hour.
i-am-foxymoron@reddit
Well it's a dual light, it's in California and it was $300.
For whatever reason, this is what happened to my neighbor. I was trying to pass along a possible ULPT to OP, not to debate what y'all's electricity rates are.
peskyboner1@reddit
The highest rates in California can be as much as almost 40¢ per kwh. Halogen construction lights are 500w per light. To run up a bill of $300 in two hours, he'd have to be using 1500 lights in his house. I guess it would be more like 1000 lights, plus the AC working overtime to handle the tremendous heat generated.
i-am-foxymoron@reddit
Actually it can be as much as 62¢ per kwh. A leak in the hot water line wouldn't matter because that's gas, not electricity. His AC unit is new, so it's not that.
Why not just accept the fact that this happened to my neighbor?
Jizzundheit@reddit
Bruh! Why are you trying to sell us all this $300 bill story like it's a religion?
i-am-foxymoron@reddit
Because I don't like being made out to be a liar. Which is essentially what you are saying.
Jizzundheit@reddit
I never did. That bloke's numbers look right to me though - so mistaken, liar, or neighbour of a liar
peskyboner1@reddit
You realize 61¢ doesn't significantly change the math, right? It would still take a double work light being on 24 hours a day for over 20 days to run up a $300 bill.
PonyThug@reddit
This is simply false, and an electric dryer uses like 5x the energy and a little space heater uses 3x the energy.
Unless he had the worlds most expensive energy rate you would need to run one of those for a whole month 24/7 to even come close to reaching $300 worth. My bill would go up by $65 if I left on of those on for the whole month.

This is a lot less complex than most people are making it out to be.
If we're talking about a standard residential apartment in America, each electrical circuit can handle 15 amps. It doesn't matter if you're mining bitcoin or anything else - that's the maximum that can be drawn per circuit (really 12 amps since you can continuously draw 80% of whatever the breaker is rated for.
Most any space heater on high will draw the full 12 amps. If this is a one bedroom apartment, you probably only have 2-4 circuits. Plus a space heater into each one and open the windows.
Average cost of electricity in the US is around 16 cents per kWh. If you have 4 circuits maxed out for the next 10 days, this would cost your landlord a little less than $200.
JNAUS18@reddit
Also, electricity is - at least in some countries - a shitton more expensive 😭🫣
PriorWriter3041@reddit
Getting space heaters is gonna be heavy. Hair dryers have the same power draw, but are cheaper to buy/borrow and more portable.
PowerlineTyler@reddit
Hey, Powerline technician here. Use the 240 outlet. There’s one for the dryer. Run the dryer non stop or use one of those 240 space heaters which you likely don’t have or want to buy. Run the dryer. If you don’t have a dryer in your apartment, leaving lights on etc won’t make a huge impact, but using the dishwasher during peak load times, leave hot water running, those things will create the biggest impact. Make sure to really focus on it between 5-7pm. Running hot water will cause the tank to empty and it needs to reheat a massive amount of water.

That is bullshit. As a landlord its sad people act like that. Also as a landlord that includes utilities, I could usually care less how much you use if your rent is on time. Is it possible to just not pay rent for the last month or two? The one thing I am worried about is my plumbing. What would be terrible is if someone constantly dumped oil down the drain creating a horrible problem that could potentially cause tens of thousands dollars worth of damage. If you really want to fuck this guy something like that would be more damaging than some utilities. Or create a slow leak some where in the house that would cause water damage. this is why landlords should be good to their tenants. They can cause lots of damage.
Plane_freak@reddit
Oven on with door open. Put a big pot of water on and keep that boiling constantly. Most ranges use 30 A at 220 V.

Leaving a hot water tap on will also waste a lot of money.

It would be hard to find something small to hide that uses a lot of power without burning the house down.
Generally the biggest consumers are anything that heats up a lot, so water heaters and space heaters. You won't find something that will use 1000W without producing equal amount of heat.
Your best bet is to get a cheap space heater or two and point it out the window. Alternatively if he uses an electric water heater, run water at max temperature until it goes cold, then repeat after a couple hours. My water heater for a family of 4 uses about 300kWh per month with normal use.
In 10.days you can do a lot of damage with heaters.

Just put an AC unit in a closet. AC units don't pull air through them, they cycle it through both sides, one being a hot side and the other being cool, both have coils so if you just set it for like 70°F it will constantly run.
And since the heat doesn't build up unless the AC fails, you can stack a bunch of them in there, so if it's winter it's a great time to borrow every AC unit out of every person's storage unit or whatever, put as many as you can fit in there as long as the airflow can get to both sides of the AC units.
If you put something in there that cycles through the unit, then there's no offset and it will get too hot or too cold too quickly and trips its own temp regulators; just watch them until you've got a good balance going on and then you're probably good to go.
Make sure to set them to max cool, or as cool as you can without them blowing up after 10 solid days of hammering away simply pushing energy from one side of itself to the other as fast as it can.

If you have one or if you're willing to spend a few bucks (like 30-50) you could get a 50 foot extension cord (or longer, the longer the better), pull your fridge out, and plug it into the extension cord. Thatll increase the ohms (electrical resistance) exponentially, ergo make it take multiple times as much electricity for the same appliance, so itll make just the fridge cost easily upwards of or over $100/mo. You could probably even just leave it coiled up in its packaging and use it that way so you can return it after you leave. (Or not - if it's placed well enough under the fridge it will likely go unnoticed and when the bill spikes itll be the last thing theyll check/suspect. Only issue with that is it probably ends up fucking with the next tennant's bill too.)
Depending on your budget for this enterprise, you could also plug every other appliance in to extension cords. The only appliances it probably wouldnt work for (specialty plugs) would be the drier and the oven.

Anything that produces heat draws a lot of current. So dryer, oven, electric stove, kettle, heater... I would go with the electric heater (and open the window... Or if possible set it up on the balcony). The kettle might also be effective, but every time the water boils you need to dump and restart. The baking and the dryer might not make such a dent since once they reach their temperature, they are built to keep it internally, so the consumption might go down.

Just use cheap heaters Everyone who say other things than a heater, they're just saying a heater, but with extra step. Energy just don't vanish into the air, it (almost) always end up as heat So yeah just use heaters and produce as much heat as possible, it will be cheaper than anything else, and will produce a better result

If OP can find the space heaters. He says he's on the 10th floor :)
Hair dryers use the same power as a space heater on max, but are way easier to carry. Just borrow a few from friends and let them heat up the house :)
mustachegiraffe@reddit
Step 1. Organize a Christmas light decorating competition within your (at least 10 floor) building. Include all floors in this.
Step 2. Offer everyone in your building to plug their lights into your outlet. Get an extension cord or encourage your neighbors to get some too if you run out.
Step 3. Tell everyone that they can keep their lights up all day until new year. I guarantee that nobody will take their lights down right before Christmas. If they do, they’ll have to deal with the landlord.

The oven sounds like a good way to get CO poisoning but the hairdryer is brilliant instead of heaters just grab a few cheap hair dryers to heat the house! Those things MUNCH electricity
PriorWriter3041@reddit
Yep, hair dryers is the way to go, their power is usually limited by what can safely be sent through the wires, so there's no household appliances that use more power than a hair dryer.
Plus everyone has them, so easy to borrow some and they're portable
PriorWriter3041@reddit
Most electric devices actually don't use that much electricity. What consumes alot is heating.
So that'll be the oven, usually around 2500W, a hairdryer, around 2000-2200W and space heaters, around 2500W.
So turn up all heating to the max and potentially borrow hair dryers to let them run, since hair dryers are the most portable high energy device OP will find for cheap.

You can get a Bitmain Antiminer to mine bitcoin for like $120 on eBay. They are not very big and very inefficient. This will use a lot of power. There will be no hiding this as they are crazy loud and will heat up a house.
TolMera@reddit
A resistor behind the plug between live and neutral.
Use R=V/I
120v @ 1 Amp = you need a 120 ohm resistor.
You probably want to stay pretty low though, since this is a fire hazard. And make sure it’s rated for the wattage, so you would need a 120 watt rated resistor behind - might be expensive around $20-$30
Go smaller and you can lower the cost.
You can also use many small resistors, like 10 1200 ohm resistors as 12W each, or 100, 12kOhm 1.2Watt
I wouldn’t install them behind the plug in the wall as it’s a fire hazard - you could easily burn the house down and you don’t want to do that to the next innocent person.
You’re better off, shorting live/neutral to ground - they will have to call an electrician out to find the ground fault, and the place won’t have power until they do.
—
There are smarter things still, like remove the anode from the hot water system, so it destroys the plumbing and hot water system - that’s tens of thousands in damages.
Or if there is a ground pump for a basement, they don’t like abrasive in the water, it destroys the pump - so that’s something.
TolMera@reddit
Oh, to just increase the bill for 10 days - just run heaters, heaters use a big wack of power.

Electric space heaters and open the windows.
Famous-Example-8332@reddit
If the doors are wood and you’re handy, get a jack plane and widen the gaps to the outside.
With windows, if you put a thumbtack or brad nail in the sill at the bottom where the window touches when closed, it will never close fully. Probably won’t lock, but if it does, it won’t be a good seal.
You can also put something like chewed gum on your freezer where the seal from the door meets the freezer, on the bottom side. This way it won’t be very visible, but it will compromise the effectiveness of the freezer seal, making the fridge run much more.
Last, if you can get a needle and syringe, pick a spot on the ceiling under some pipes, or if you’re on the top floor, I guess anywhere but preferably under a roof joint, and inject some water into/behind the drywall. This will make it look like there’s water damage, and at the best they’ll just repaint, at worst he will be looking for a leak that isn’t there, maybe replace some pipes or have a roofer in to take a look.
snuggletough@reddit
Hook some 6awg wires into a 50+ Amp 220v breaker. Run them outside and bury them 3 feet underground with the ends 6" apart and stripped bare for a foot. This will draw a continuous 30+ amps when the soil is wet, less in summer.

Heaters. Watts = amps times volts. Most outlets are limited to 15 amps. Voltage is 120. Max watts per circuit is 1800. So … a kWh is $0.25? So you can waste $0.45 per hour per circuit. Space heaters and hair dryers will consume 15 amps. Lot of trouble for minimal impact.

If you’re not committed to electricity…small water leaks can become huge amounts of money. A bad seal on a toilet flat could cost hundreds per month and EASILY slip below the radar.
If you’re not giving up the place just run the shower and sinks nonstop.
