Can anyone recognise the aircraft on the right? (It's left), this was taken in an airbase in Syria and I can't recognise it for the life of me

Me too thought it was a mig
skatr4545@reddit
saw some other views of this photo and saw that there was a T-6 as well in pretty bad condition.
Thrall7734@reddit
Sorry for of top, but this looks like a shot from Star Wars
Havacprime67@reddit
It's a messashit
luillonyc@reddit
Mig?
Wasabi_The_Owl@reddit
Could be a navy trainer aircraft (US)
WarthogOsl@reddit
Okay, but what's the other thing that looks like a turbojet with fixed landing gear bolted to the sides? Some sort of maintenance trainer?
ttystikk@reddit
I'm going to guess it was originally a MIG-21 before unspeakable things happened to it.
Rooilia@reddit
No, it is a Su 22 like people below pointed out. Mig 21 radom would protrude way further.
ttystikk@reddit
Hard for me to tell either way.
tostado22@reddit
Much like a lot of Soviet era weapons and equipment in that region
Hiryu2point0@reddit
Sukhoi Su-22.
Rooilia@reddit
I think you naiked it. The radom matches the model best.
roastpuff@reddit
Half of a podracer, of course

"It's working! It's working!"
AnastasiaSheppard@reddit
Wizard!
Un0rigi0na1@reddit
I'm guessing a Su-7 or Mig-21 with some sort of wheel assembly mounted to move it around without the wings.
WarthogOsl@reddit
I guess that might make sense. Maybe for an Su-22 versus an Su-7, I think, though?
Rd28T@reddit
I could be dead wrong, but almost looks like an English Electric Lightning. But can’t imagine why one of those would be there.
ProLordx@reddit
Syria didn't have electric lighting
Gimlz@reddit
Ok, but what is the engine on the left?
Sea_Perspective6891@reddit
Looks like a Mig 19. It's most of a whole aircraft actually. The engine just takes up most of the fuselage.
WarthogOsl@reddit
MiG-19 doesn't have a cone/spike in the inlet.
Sea_Perspective6891@reddit
Oh right. After a quick web search it looks more like a Mig-21.
TP76@reddit
Looks like Delphin trainer.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
Aero L-29 Delphin. A Cold War Czechoslovakian jet trainer popular in Eastern Bloc and non-aligned nations.
ProLordx@reddit
Dolphin in English, delfin in Czech
daygloviking@reddit
English here, I call it a Delfin.
Go on and ask me what I call a MiG-15
thebavarianbarbarian@reddit
Well, if he doesn't ask, I'll do it.
How do you call a mig 15?
daygloviking@reddit
A Sukhoi with cheese, because otherwise I’ll be suspended for a month for offensive language
timdav8@reddit
One G for the Mig Two Gs for the pig offal dish
Not sure i understand the sensitivity / s

You ever been on a shrimp boat?

It isn't him. Its NATO.
thebavarianbarbarian@reddit
That went straight over my head. I remembered thank you.

Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
Nobody calls it a Dolphin.
ProLordx@reddit
Iam from Slovakia and i understand Czech. Delfín (water animal) is called Dolphin in English not Delphin.
anynamesleft@reddit
Good ol reddit.
Post a pic of some old, obscure piece of equipment and along comes someone who can quote serial numbers and manufacturing location for each individual part of it.
I love you reddit, and you too Cool-Acanthaceae8986.
white1walker@reddit (OP)
Welp that's solved, not surprised I didn't get that tbh
AFecklessWeasel@reddit
Not to worry as you’re probably much more familiar with the L-39 as it’s more popular and you’re more likely to have seen that in 80s and 90s action movies where it was called a MiG even though it clearly wasn’t.
JustAnother_Brit@reddit
That’s definitely a MiG it’s what Tom Cruise fought in Top Gun and they never make mistakes

RandomNick42@reddit
Actually those were T-5 Talon or something. A US trainer.
TbonerT@reddit
Close. They were F-5s, based on the same aircraft the T-38 Talon supersonic trainer is based on.
Far_Dragonfruit_1829@reddit
Hell's Bells. A-4. F-5. Ancient history, practically.

Love that opening
gwoates@reddit
One way to help identify aircraft in cases like this is to look up the Wikipedia page for the particular country's air force. At the very least it will help narrow down the possibilities. In this case Syria's L-29s are listed under the retired section (soon to be joined by everything else listed?).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_Air_Force?useskin=vector#Retired
smilingmike415@reddit
And it’s rear engined, so don’t be surprised when you find luggage under that front bonnet instead of a power plant.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
The frunk.
It’s pretty hillarious seeing Ford Lightnings around now. Because in front of a hotel they look like a basic F-150 that’s having engine trouble.

I’m guessing this is at Damascus airport after Israel bombed it?
prosshy@reddit
This looks to be the mezzeh air force base I recognize some buildings in the background as I had family that lived right next to it. I too lived right next to it for a little bit growing up.
hoggytime613@reddit
Pretty sure that's a pod racer...
Sea_Perspective6891@reddit
But is it Nubian?
Past-Raccoon8224@reddit
Yeah its a broken one. 👍
white1walker@reddit (OP)
Slightly used, well maintained
JBtheDestroyer@reddit
Just needs a fuel pump, no tire kickers.
No I won't take 1000 for it, I know what I got.
Big_BadRedWolf@reddit
Hi, Is the plane still available? Would you take 1000 for it?
JBtheDestroyer@reddit
2500 cash. The turbine alone is worth 1500.
I got three other guys coming to look at it this weekend
Past-Raccoon8224@reddit
A fixer upper u say 😉
daygloviking@reddit
Big summer blowout!
highmodulus@reddit
Ran when parked, I know what I got.

It looks like it could be the Mig 19

L-29 Delphin
JBtheDestroyer@reddit
It's hideous, so it's Russian. Looks like a trainer with that bulbous cockpit. Late 60s vintage.
Now to read on to the correct answer and learn something today...
pinchhitter4number1@reddit
Also looks like a rusted ZSU-23-4 on the far left of the image.
Zcube73@reddit
L-29 Delfin
fremdo@reddit
the cool thing about this plane is it's now a popular civilian-owned fighter jet! in fact, I fly out of a small airport outside chicago and a flight school at our airport that specializes in aerobatic and advanced flight training just acquired one and has been flying it a lot lately, so I've seen a Delfin take off while taxiing to the runway myself
anomalkingdom@reddit
I've flown [in] it. Not a terrible lot of power, but it handles nicely. Manual control, very direct contact with the aircraft. Need both hands to pull on stick to do higher G's! I experienced it as relatively forgivable.
sierrahotel74@reddit
One on the left looks like what’s left of an SU-22
Ducky_Flips@reddit
aero delfin? saw one at a plane show this summer
