If you had a 4 day working week, which weekday would you take off and why?

It's Sunday and once again the weekend has felt almost non-existent, leading me to wonder if I'd prefer a Friday or Monday off if I had a choice of a 4-day week... what day would you choose?

I used to work 3 days a week, (bloody long hours) I did weekend nights .... health concerns about nights ignored I'd be all over that like a rash again .... no rush hour, no Saturday Tesco, no rat race ...down sides are that your social life has to adapt, was lucky I had some great friends who had mid week off.

I work four days. Mon-Wed in my "proper" job, then self employed stuff on Thursday. The first three days are fixed. But I can move around the other stuff. But i tend to have Friday off as that fits with my wife's day off. And it means we can go out while the kids are at school. A three day weekend is nice too.

Plus usually you get all the bank holidays that fall on a Monday as days off in lieu of you work full time hours Tue-Fri. Some years are better than others but on a good year I'll get 5 days to take. I like that flexibility.

I do, Thursday. I work 8-6 Mon-Wed, Fri (instead of 9-5 Mon-Fri) and get Thursday off. It really helps with appointments, Doctors seem to really like a Thursday so I rarely need to take time off with medical appointments and I can book in hair/feet/dental appointments much easier. Get 3 days in a row, a break, one day and then the weekend. Or book Friday off for a nice long weekend.

I find Monday's to be completely pot luck (for instance it's just taken me almost an hour for my commute whereas I've had Mondays where I've set off at the same time and been in the office in under half an hour) but Fridays tend to be the best day on the roads. I suspect a lot of people who are hybrid choose to work from home on a Friday if they have the option. Disagree with the comment you're replying to though, I find Tuesdays and Thursdays are the worst days as a rule of thumb

Years ago I did a 4 day week. 10 staff and 8 desks available. We had 2 people requested every Wednesday as it suited them. The rest of us did rolling days each week of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. It meant when you had Friday you had Monday the next week so 1 in 4 weekends was a 4 day weekend. It was fantastic and the best hours Ive ever worked.

When I was lucky enough to do this I took Monday. Honestly loosing bank holidays sucked but I took it because of my unexplained fatigue, and I used it so that I could get things done. I'd wake up, walk with my ex (husband) to his work, walk to the gym and then do food shopping before getting home to do therapy at midday. Then for the afternoon I'd relax or keep that time for doctors appointments. I originally wanted Wednesday but my boss said no. I thought with fatigue it would mean 2 days, 1 day off, 2 days, 2 day off. I think it depends but taking a Friday off I'd be worried I'd just sleep off the week and get nothing done. Ultimately I'd probably go with Wednesday. It would make meal prepping and fatigue a lot more managable

They'veactually got the better deal when it comes to bank holidays. Any business that gives you bank holidays off paid is doing so out of your holiday allowance. If you don't work Mondays, that means that most of those bank holidays don't come out of your allowance, giving you more freedom in how you spend them

Technically they don’t. The minimum annual leave is 28 days so they might say you have 4 weeks plus bank holiday but in reality they are giving you the bank holidays as part of your legal minimum.

Yes. and in those places your total holiday allowance is the holidays + the annual leave entitlement. Thats why when, in the occassion you are required to work those days, you get time off in lieu. It's not any different, it's just made more complicated when the company assumes you're going to be able to easier have those days off.

We already do a 4.5 day week, with Friday afternoon being off for the company (some people need to cover it and will take different days+times). Such a huge difference being able to get your weekend started a little early. My wife might still be working but I can do some chores, shopping, an early dinner, or admin done and then our weekend is actually our weekend. Or maybe we're going away for the weekend with friends. I can get there a few hours early, bag the best bedroom, and make a start on a big dinner or BBQ. It also means that three days weekends only require half a day of annual leave. So yeah, Friday works for me.

Work a 5 day week normally but when I do book longer weekends always choose Monday to avoid the Sunday scaries and argue that you never have a rubbish Friday at work, but Mondays at work are depressing. I would say a BLOCK works better for both Work and For Home: \* 4-day working week = Builds momentum but is short enough not to feel burnt out at end of week. \* 3-day weekend = More scope for home life and holiday eg 1 day hoke chores, 1 day doing activities, 1 day family social or in effect 3-day trip with travel day or morning either side providing 2x 1.5 or minimum 1 full day without travel week end break eg go hiking and camping etc. Getting away and being more physical outside excess intellectual or emotional and social is a good balancer. \* Choose Monday: Mondays are most morose day and Fridays are most positive day with workers or students if a teacher. Friday evenings are highest energy of people enjoying life so good to share that. Tues-Fri is very welcome work week for some serious work with natural dip at end. Current work week is frankly stupid: 2-days to fit hoke chores, activities day and family or trip away does not work as something is squeezed along with week end traffic rush. 4 days is enough to work and not feel sick of working with colleagues and keeping energy levels high.

I’ve recently moved to a 3-day week. I’ve enough money to retire but know I will get lonely and bored so worked with my boss and HR to move to 3 days. I alternate on a 2-week schedule. Week 1, I work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Off Thursday and Friday. Week 2, I am off Monday and Tuesday. I then work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Rinse a repeat. 2 days off each week and 6 consecutive days including weekends every fortnight. It’s bliss.

I work four days and take Friday off. Others in my place take Wednesdays. The advantage of Friday. You only have to “catch up” on a Monday when everyone is getting back into the work week. You miss less as people tend to plan less for Friday. And if something goes terribly wrong on Friday and you need to stay late work/work the weekend, you aren’t there to be pulled into it

My job is only 4 days a week, so I have already experienced this joy. A couple of years back I had Wednesdays off and it was great, the 2-2 split made it so that I only ever really had one more day of work to get through. Then they changed the day to Tuesday and I was a bit miffed but over time it has become my favourite day off for a couple of reasons: 1) bank holiday Mondays mean 4 day weekends plus the afternoon/evening on Friday which is really nice (and also the reason I wouldn’t pick Monday, if I had the choice) 2) Monday is now no longer the Monday feeling day, as I only have to make it through the day and I am rewarded with a day off for it. 3) it’s actually quite nice to get a bit of a flow going over Wednesday-Friday, looking back the 2-2 split was a bit broken up and having that extra day in a row helps. 4) By the time Wednesday comes round I’m already half way through the week, then on Thursday I only have one more day left, and Friday is basically the weekend (and I finish an hour earlier than the rest of the week) Any day off in the week is a blessing though, it’s the perfect day to do all of the usual weekend life admin (washing, cleaning etc.) and it leaves my weekends free to actually do the things I want to do without worrying about when I’m going to do the life admin if I’m having a busy weekend. If the opportunity presents itself I would highly recommend it, however now I have a bit of a fear about returning to a 5 day week which limits my job prospects somewhat.

I work what some people call a 9 day fortnight, condensing my hours over 2 weeks to work a 4 day week, every other week. I take every other Monday off, and I love it. On Friday generally I feel like productivity drops anyway, there’s less meetings (most of the time), and the day is quieter. So I take the day easy on Fridays and finish early as with everyone else, then take Mondays off. Mondays in the business I work for can be quite full on, so it’s like taking the most intense day out and rejoining once everyone’s chilled out again! Highly recommend!

Bank holiday weekends in particular are going to be bliss as you say. 4 day weekend, then back in for 3 days before having 3 more days off. That really is the life. As somebody who enjoys travelling too, my company is not altering our holiday entitlements either (i have had specific confirmation of this via email) so my holiday allowance will stretch quite a bit further, especially when i combine them 4 day weekends into trips. I feel like i am barely going to be there, i don't know how this could possibly stick 😂 Especially when the other bloke who does the same job as me retires next summer and that either leaves me alone doing it (likely i think) or taking on an apprentice.

I do a 4 day week, and Wednesday is also my chosen day off. However, recent family circumstances, beyond my control, have made it difficult to always maintain that as a regular day off. Luckily, I have wonderful bosses who are happy for me to chop and change this day, as long as I'm still working my contacted hours. I chose Wednesday because then I'm only working two days either side, and I have been able to commit to doing something else I love to do on a Wednesday (at least before my family situation arose). I also try to make sure any medical or dental appointments or anything else I need to arrange that can only take place during general working hours happen on a Wednesday.

0.7FTE I technically have a float D/O that I can use when I choose but it’s default is Monday as that’s when most of the bank holidays fall so on those days I basically get bonus holiday days since they’re in my entitlement but I’m not using them. I worked 30 hours a week for quite a few years, I took Fridays off so the weekend started early. I absolutely recommend it 100%. Getting all your jobs done on Friday then having your weekend free. From a business point of view, it worked well for the company I work for as Monday is generally busy and Friday is quieter. I've just dropped down to 3 days and have also dropped Mondays. So now every weekend is super long. I totally recommend this too when you decide to reduce down. If it was me deciding again, I'd do the same again, Fridays off to start.

When bank holidays fall on a Monday we'd work Tuesday-friday, and acrue 1 day holiday in lieu. There was a rota for someone to cover Fridays every week. That meant that the week you'd work the Friday, you'd work Tuesday-friday, so you'd get a 4 day weekend It was a very nice arrangement, unfortunately the work dynamics were absolutely attrocious. I've always preferes the Friday off because I actually don't mind the start of the week, and always feel fresh going in on a Monday. It's only around Wednesday that I start to lose steam and need time off again!

I work a three day week, Monday Tuesday and Friday. I love it as I can take the Friday off to get more or less a week off. Finish Tuesday then back in on the Monday.

Husband has Friday off, and teusday as his office day. Both work out well at the moment with a toddler and a baby as we can do things like soft play and museums on a Friday. The teusday works great because if he's not in meetings and doing CPD we can do top up shops or call people if stuff has popped up over the weekend.

Wednesday is a good shout, though Monday or Friday are also good options for long weekends without taking much annual leave. And on the subject of annual leave, depending on your employers leave policy with regard to bank holidays, having a Monday ad your non-work day may give you extra leave throughout the year. I.e. let’s say in your work full time is 37.5hrs per week. If BHs are surplus to your annual leave, and you are still working FT hours over the 4 days, the company may compensate you the BH hours from a 5day schedule. As most BHs fall on a Monday, you would work FT hours that week anyway, so your employer may give back as leave the 7.5hrs that 5day staff would have off during the BH. Some employers will want this taken asap, others will add it to your annual leave allowance. Worth enquiring about in some circumstances

Lots of Wednesday and Monday love here but I used to have the privilege of a 4 day week and I took the obvious choice of a Friday off. I enjoy weekends away and going to cities across the uk to see friends. It’s saved me so much annual leave having the Friday off. If going to see a friend I could be in their city before they finish work, go to a museum or do some sight seeing and meet them straight from work. Or if not going anywhere use that day to do life admin or diy and still ahead the whole weekend ahead of me without feeling tired in a Friday being as I’ve just had a lie in.

I’ve worked a four day working week (35 hrs compressed into 4 days instead of 5) now for 8 years. Several people on my team already didn’t work Fridays, so I picked Mondays as my non-working day. Can wholeheartedly recommend. No more Sunday night blues at the impending start of the working week. ‘Monday night’ blues definitely don’t seem as bad, mainly I think due to it only being 4 days until next weekend rather than 5. Working Friday also better in my view as it’s quieter and can actually get some work done! Generally my 4 day working week experience is brilliant - the extra day to go shopping, get to the gym and just get stuff done that then doesn’t take time away from the actual weekend

I do a 4 day working week, I have done for about 6 years now. I take Fridays off for these reasons: Travel is easier on Thursday nights, I’m a contractor and travelling on a Friday afternoon around the country is a nightmare. You still get your bank holiday Mondays, if you took the Mondays off then you would lose the bank holiday due to it being your usual day off, now a bank holiday weekend is a 4 day event. I prefer to have to option to work the end of the week if work slips or there’s a huge issue that needs to be sorted that week. It’s like a contingency day that if needed means you still don’t eat into your weekend. I prefer to get the 4 days out of the way, and then have the full weekend to myself including my bonus day. Also I have occasionally gone on little trips abroad over the weekend that makes it a lot easier having the Friday to travel or go on a Thursday night and you get 2 full nights in the location rather than a rushed travel night then one actual night.

I’ve done this in 2 jobs now and don’t work Wednesdays. It’s the ideal day as far as I’m concerned. Breaks the week up nicely so I’m not working more than 2 days in a row and gives me a mid-week day that I can use for stuff like medical appointments (doctor, physio, dentist etc.) If I want to book a long weekend, I book 2 days off out of my holiday entitlement (Thu/Fri) which gives me 5 days off in a row Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun. Highly recommended if you can agree it with work.

I work Mon-Thurs and it’s been life changing having a 3 day weekend. I get one extra day to do life admin, appointments, cleaning, shopping etc and still have my whole weekend left! While I hear the people saying Wednesday to break up the week, when you only work the 4 days it’s more bearable to work through and have 3 days off in a row! Some of my colleagues have Monday off but I do evil laughs on bank holiday weekends!

Monday is the most effective day to take off. Losing a day pro ratas your holidays however it also puts bank holidays back into your allowance. As such working a four day week and taking off Mondays means you have more holidays to take then if you were working full time and forced to take the bank holidays on a Monday!

A lot of things around by me are closed on Mondays, and the relaxing nature of Sundays would be odd with always having a Monday off I think Wednesday would be the most practical day off. Would stop 3 day weekends away feeling like a party and would just be two days at work each side. A midweek day off would wreck havoc with my sleep though!

Our main client (a gov department) has so many people with 4 day weeks with different days off it’s almost impossible to schedule calls with the right people all together at the right time, without months of forward planning. It’s really slowed down projects from their POV. We do the work and get paid (just takes a bit longer) but their project pace has slowed down by about half, and these are over-consultative, risk-averse civil servants already! I know there’s lots of other reasons for things being the way they are within gov but from first hand observation that doesn’t seem to help. (I’m not against it if it’s managed well)

My company introduced an early retirement scheme. I'd been considering early retirement, so I just took this as a sign. For a year I worked a 4 day week, so I took Wednesday off (for the reasons others have given). For my final year, I worked a 3 day week, so I took Friday and Monday off, to give a nice long weekend.

Friday: I found that work would accumulate during the week. And/shit would hit the fan on Thursday afternoon. Resulted in temptation (sometimes pressure) to just log on for a bit on Friday to clear the decks. Wednesday: Similar issues to Friday. Disrupted the week too much for me. Seemed good on paper but didn’t work in reality. Monday: Was perfect for me. The weekend is a built in stop to the week that people respect. So I didn’t get the same issues as Friday.

After my dad died, I worked full-time hours over 4 days Monday to Thursday, so that I could take my mum shopping on a Friday when it was less busy for her than at the weekend. She was 80 and had never learned to drive, so had relied on my dad. If she needed a medical appointment she'd schedule that for a Friday too, although she was fairly robust health wise. As an added bonus, I could get my cleaning done, which left the weekends free for more of the fun stuff. I liked the weekend starting on a Thursday night.
