Xena and Ares

Finally made it to Season 6…I’ve never ever watched it until now. Ares. Does anyone think he could’ve been redeemed and actually been with Xena? Seemed like he proved multiple times he did love her truly. Would’ve been nice to see him end up with her and changed. IMO.
Jahon_Dony@reddit
No, bc he was likely her father. And he was "redeemed." Just keep watching.
DarkAvengerx@reddit
Literally watching XENA now,
Ares just kissed her on the lips saying he lived her, when she faked her death lol.

The lesbian viewers of Xena: Warrior Princess would likely create time-travel and go back in time to kill Ares to prevent that storyline from happening.

Xena was 1000% my bi-awakening.
Icy-Sir-8414@reddit
That's what I keep telling people she's a bisexual character and Gabby is pansexual character but no one wants to hear that
brinrex89@reddit
This makes the most sense in the grand scheme of things
Icy-Sir-8414@reddit
Exactly
Latte-Catte@reddit
Right?!
Even if they had plans for that, they definitely scrapped that ideas by season 1 after knowing their audience.
SomeTip8742@reddit
Honestly.. yes and no.. I think they had great on screen chemistry.
brandnewbanana@reddit
All three did but I can’t imagine anything other than a lesbian Gabrielle by the end of the series. I sometimes imagine it’s a weird little thrupple where Ares and Xena occasionally get sack time in exchange for Gabrielle
Cyberfaust11@reddit
I think Ares being Xena's father would make it so much hotter. It's more intimate.
You think being gay is not accepted back then... try incest.
I don't see a problem with it. Adults can do whatever the fuck they want - it's none of my business.
But I think people hate incest (in other people) so much because they don't want people to think if they accept it, that they must be into it too.
DaniDoesnt@reddit
Yup

I don’t think Ares could change fully. He is a god not a man. They have affinities and are in charge of those things. We saw it as far back as ten little warlords when he lost his powers and the world went kinda topsy turvy. he’s not a human and is only capable of a certain amount of growth. Xena is human and constantly changing, as is the point of the show. She outgrew him and it made him kinda bitter for ever lol.

I envy your username
grismow@reddit
What he felt for xena wasn’t love, it was possession and lust. Did he do some good things? Sure, does that negate all the awful things he did, and he did to her. No
mely15@reddit
I think that may be true from when he is a God, I don’t know how capable he was of true love. It was more than just possession and lust though when he was human.
grismow@reddit
well, as that might be, his heroic acts that are sprinkled within the show do not make up for his continued behavior, for his sexualisation, for "grooming" xena (grooming in terms of using his war god like power to influence xena and make her more bloodthirsty --- which is something people like to forget; yes, she has the dark part in her, but when a god wants to fuck you up, only a strong character like xena has shown herself after so much reflection and redemption could escape that influence)
badluckfarmer@reddit
I must have forgotten. When?
Necessary_Cow_1152@reddit
Was there an ares in your life too lol?
vapemonster91@reddit
No. Just.... no. He used her, he was in lust with her, it wasn't love.
Jammed-Glock@reddit
I think he evolved throughout the series and that he truly loved her. But it wouldn’t have worked. There destinies may have been intertwined but they were never joined. Xena and Gabrielle were soulmates.
Agent8699@reddit
An extended storyline with mortal Ares somewhat learning the error of his ways would have potentially been interesting.
But, they wanted to focus on Xena and Gabrielle in the final season, which is why mortal Ares mostly appears as a joke.
Latte-Catte@reddit
I feel like all gods without their godhood would be a joke, their ego simply couldn't handle it lol
Tricky_Direction_897@reddit
There’s the Shipper Seasons, an online written continuation of the series, which explores this. Really good!
Latte-Catte@reddit
I don't think gods are capable of fully changing themselves, even for love. Ares made sacrifices but that's the extent. Plus there's no way the writers would ever get rid of the god of war, in You Are There, the lore proves that the gods are just another force of nature manifested in an image of a human being. Ares will never stop being god of war, and Xena was always fated to find redemption. They simply weren't met to be.
BorderWander@reddit
Xena said he had a 1 in a billion chance with her. I think we should trust that she knew what she was talking about.
theseedbeader@reddit
I always shipped Xena and Ares as a teen, though I was interested in the Xena/Gabs ship. Now, many years later, I ship Xena and Gabrielle, but I still think Xena/Ares is interesting. Now I also kinda dig the Ares/Gabrielle ship too.
I would absolutely be interested in seeing them as a throuple, but we would never have seen that in the show. People were already frowning about the lesbian subtext, I think their heads would explode is they made them polyamorous bisexual characters.
brandnewbanana@reddit
That’s my take too! I can’t imagine Gabrielle and Ares ever actually having sex though. Maybe an occasional, very occasional threeway. Xena doesn’t love Ares the same way or depth she loves Gabrielle so it’d literally be just like Old Ares Had A Farm.
doubledubdub44@reddit
Isn’t there a strong possibility of him being her father? I know the gods are cool with incest but still…
Tricky_Direction_897@reddit
1000% Have always felt they belonged together. And I loved the idea that Xena’s soulmate was her best friend, not her lover - the idea that soulmates don’t have to be limited to a couple. Just my two cents!
anonymousavacado2@reddit
Xenas Soulmate was both
Brotein1992@reddit
Nope. Because her soul mate is Gabrielle
Wicked68@reddit
I feel like he was redeemed as much as he could be, especially after being mortal for a while. But he was never going to get to be with Xena. Gabrielle wasn't having that 😂, and Xena didn't want him long term. She did appreciate the things he did for her, in the end, though
FirebirdWriter@reddit
If someone else took on the duties of War. There is an episode which shows what happens without his godhood in play despite the fact Athena is also a war god. I always accepted this as two sides are needed for a conflict.
silvergiltsky@reddit
I think Athena, being the God of wisdom, was the God of war strategy, effectively fighting the battles and dealing with other logistics of maintaining and deploying an army. But Ares was the God of all aspects--those plus the balls-out mayhem, insanity and devastation, heroism, honor and the lack of it, etc.
That's just my take, after being a mythology-nerd kid for years.
EmperorIC@reddit
The only way i see that happening is if aries gives up godhood for her out of love for her n so hes not tempted to do bad things
1KyloRen@reddit
Wait, he did…
EmperorIC@reddit
He didnt as far as im aware
hermit198388@reddit
He gave up his godhood to heal / bring Gabrielle and Eve back to life in Motherhood. When Athena asks him why, he says it's because he loves Xena (actually, he says it's because "he has a thing for her", lol).
EmperorIC@reddit
Oh yeah been a while for me obv im sorry
badluckfarmer@reddit
War is not necessarily incompatible with love, but it can make for some twisted relationships.
