Legs, lines, latch… every time.

you hook up to your new pal - pin, air, legs when you drop, you remove it from your lap - legs, air, pin

Hope he apologized to the back of that cab Forgetting those can be extra fun in a day cab when your back window suddenly explodes

Happened to me my third week of training, brand new international day cab Surprised they didn’t fire me

It's *always* the new trucks. Never fails.

Ornery_Ads@reddit

Trucking has a high failure rate. People that can't cut it drop out early in their careers. People that have been around a while get accustomed to their truck and just want some consistency, so when a new truck comes in, they don't care about getting the fancy new thing. New drivers want the fancy new thing to show off their fancy new career. Fancy new things have more newbies that may or may not be competent.

You'd be amazed the kind of mistakes that happen daily in trucking. They can't possibly fire everyone for every single (relatively little) mistake. Nobody is perfect. We've all done stupid shit.

It was an international bro, it was going to the shop anyway.

Eh I'd say that's on your trainer just as much as on you

I’ve cut my eye from the tempered glass getting into my eye from doing that before. It was also the end of my shift (local driver). What a way to end a night lol

My coworker did this. We are yard drivers tho and his back door was open. Fucker blew out his windshield hahaha

I'm still green. I'm just over 6 months in on my first diving gig. I've made sure to show down and triple check everything so nothing like this happens again.

SkinnyG80@reddit

I always do everything in the same order, and if you are on the phone then call them back, if someone is talking to you tell them to wait, no distractions, lastly whenever I drop or hook a trailer I sit in the seat and before I touch or do ANYTHING I think did I do the 3 things? Landing gear, 5th wheel, air lines/electrical, if I don't specifically remember then I just get back out and look
View on Reddit #42433134

emdefmek@reddit (OP)

The best advice I can give you in terms of drop and hook is to never enter your cab until everything is disconnected/connected. Going in the cab to rest or whatever means you forget shit.

The snap of death is how we call it. As another commentator said. You only get one. Same with dragging your landing gear or high hooking.
View on Reddit #42323259

Rhetoric9119@reddit

I definitely high hooked before then forgot to let air out and bent the damn hook 😅🤣. Now my ass gets outside before I hook up if it even slightly looks too high
View on Reddit #42427472

C9Midnite@reddit

I high hooked in a spotter truck with no side door had to radio for help once lol. Never doing that again.
View on Reddit #42340168

12InchPickle@reddit

This is why I liked driving autocars. They have a side door. The Ottawa’s didn’t. I don’t recall how the capacity were.

Cool_Algae4265@reddit

I’ve dragged my landing gear far more than once lol

Is he a rookie or did he get distracted in the middle of unhooking?
View on Reddit #42335858

emdefmek@reddit (OP)

Nah he is a pretty old guy, I pulled into the yard to drop my trailer and his truck was already parked with the landing gear down. While I was dropping my landing gear there was a loud POP and loud his and yeah he forgot the lines. I guess he was packing his stuff up to head home in between his dropping of the trailer and just forgot.

Well that ruined his weekend. Gonna be on his mind the whole time

It’s like forgetting to release the air before disconnecting your gladhands…you only ever do it ONCE.
View on Reddit #42323132

notbannd4cussingmods@reddit

Huh? I do it all the time. Wakes me right up.
View on Reddit #42326201

HarryBallzonya6969@reddit

I also do this all the time. I use a landoll trailer and I need the brakes released to move the wheels and tilt the bed.
View on Reddit #42401473

911coldiesel@reddit

My technique is to look away when disconnecting...... Yeah I know when it is charged that it is stiffer.

Lol I probably do it once a week. It is as close to a mistake without consequences as we get in this industry.

I did this my 2nd time disconnecting the neck from a Cozad trailer. Only I ripped all the lines off the trailer with the neck

View on Reddit #42356183

IEatCouch@reddit

Ive done it a few times, but the trailer drops on the frame and the tires. Smushing the tires slamms the truck to a stop. I just cranked the trailer back up and good to go, if no one sees it and nothings damaged it never happened...
View on Reddit #42333010

robs104@reddit

If you’re forgetting to lower your landing gear multiple times then maybe you should reconsider some things. Maybe make yourself a checklist or something. That’s not good.
View on Reddit #42345677

I work nights, my brain is dead most of the time. Its only happened like 3 times.

Zealousideal_War1237@reddit

I recently did something close but I think I did a bit more damage. I drive a pneumatic tanker and I removed my air and electric lines and forgot to remove the hose that goes from the blower to the trailer. I broke the top of the blower, tore the hose, bent the deck plates on my truck, and broke the main air supply pipe on my trailer. I thought I was going to get fired for it and my manager just laughed and said "well fuck... I bet you won't do that again" filled out an incident report and that was it. I was in an extra truck and trailer we have on the lot for 2 weeks while waiting on my truck to be fixed. This happened 4 months in on the job, at my 6 month review last week it was brought up and all they asked is if I learned how to prevent it in the future.
View on Reddit #42342810

emdefmek@reddit (OP)

Yeah something I learned the hard way in my career is that as long as you don't hurt anyone or cause major damage then you get one chance.
View on Reddit #42343029

TrucksAndSports@reddit

This is why everyone needs an exact system they follow every time when dropping/hooking…
View on Reddit #42332564

emdefmek@reddit (OP)

We have in cab 5th pin disconnect so when I drop a trailer I do a walk around and disconnect hoses and drop landing gear before I get into the truck.
View on Reddit #42342716

dingdingdredgen@reddit

Drop the gear, pull the pin... count to three, and throw?

I got in a hurry during a trailer swap, got distracted, and did that.... once. That's a perfect example of something only being a fuckup if you do it again.

Same. First time is a product of being in a rush. Second time… shouldn’t be a second time

I’ve done it years ago. Broke the back window (daycab). Shattered glass everywhere. Last night, my truck was in the shop. I asked why. Boss said, “New guy busted the back window.” Great. Now I have to drive around with blue tape on the windshield. I thought about putting up a sign saying, “Not me this time.”
