Why is it acceptable for horses poo to not be cleared up, but not acceptable at all for dog poo to not be cleared up? r/AskUK on the streets of London

Couldn’t fit horse poo in the little bag
Round_Caregiver2380@reddit
In some countries horses have catch bags on the back to catch all the poo.
carntfarkface@reddit
I thought everyone used these until I came to this Reddit whole bored at the ED hahah
SadAnnah13@reddit
That's actually a really good idea!
Mauve078@reddit
I'm never convinced about the "horse poo isn't actually poisonous" argument, I don't care if it is or isn't, I wasn't planning on having some for lunch. I wouldn't drop a bottle or a crisp wrapper on the floor and then justify it by saying that it's not poisonous so it doesn't matter.
The "well it's hard to get off your horse and pick it up" argument doesn't hold that much weight either as, unless it's your job, you'd have made a conscious decision to own the horse, a conscious decision to ride the horse, and a conscious decision to go to the place where the horse decided to defecate. If you can't safely get off the horse for 30 seconds to pick it up then the horse should not be in that environment.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
Ok so you get off the horse. The horse then needs stand still unattended in amongst traffic as you need both hands to shovel up its poop. Cars, buses, pedestrians all around it and its got to stand like a robot and not flinch whilst you turn your attention to clean up. Horses can absolutely be trained to do that but does it sound the safest options? What about young horses? How do you get them used to that without training them in that situation? Then what do you do with the kgs of crap? Try and find a bin? With horse in tow? Cos you might struggle getting back on your horse with one hand and an bag full of horse crap.
Riders dont want to be on roads. Its lack of options that makes it a necessary evil except for working horses.
carntfarkface@reddit
Put it in some bushes, move it off the road or bike track or pedestrian walkway. It isn't that hard. Crikey. Have a whinge. If you can afford a horse move their huge pile of shit out of my son's face and direct line on a designated bike riding trail. BOOOO lazy arses
Tetracropolis@reddit
Why do we need horses on roads?
No_Investigator9059@reddit
Again. Unless its police horses or some Queens horses nonsense, no one wants their horses on roads. No one.
Tetracropolis@reddit
No, I mean why do we as a society want horses on roads in cities.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
As in police horses? Try a google and find out.
Tetracropolis@reddit
No, the public interest reason for police horses is obvious. I mean why do we need civilians riding around cities on horses crapping everywhere.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
I'm going to say it again... we don't. They don't want to. They just have no choice. Also, it's not really a huge issue is it, except for police horses how many civilians on horses do you see riding through your local city on a daily basis?
aiwg@reddit
They chose to buy a horse despite the fact that they live in a urban area.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
Again how many people do you regularly see riding their horses through your city?
aiwg@reddit
A lot during summer. They often block footpaths by traveling slower than people walking (or stopping to have conversations on their horses) and not leaving enough space for people to get through, then get all grumpy when you try to get past.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
It seems you might want to write to your local council and ask for the bridleways in your area to be looked at, Im sure your local horse riders would be thrilled and happy to add their names to your petition. A common goal as it were.
aiwg@reddit
I'm talking about footpaths, not bridleways. Horses aren't even supposed to be there, but they don't care and act entitled to get in everyone's way.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
Well then feel free to report them if it is indeed a public footpath and not a multi-access path.
'Act entitled' - 😂
aiwg@reddit
Yeah. Rolling your eyes at people trying to get through, while you block the path to have a conversation on your horse is pretty entitled.
Reporting them won't do anything and they know it.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
So there are some rude people out there, doesnt mean you need to tar everyone with the same brush. Your complaint is not horses being in cities its horses illegally on footpaths. These are not the same.
carntfarkface@reddit
My five year old son faceplanted into horse poo on the great Southern rail trail in Victoria today as the pile knocked him off his bike coming around a declining bend. He and I were not so happy that some prick Didn't bother to at least scatter their horses poo onto the side of the trail. As a horse rider myself it is not difficult to use a bag for their droppings, it doesn't impede the horse and common courtesy to scatter it in the bushes away from public spaces people use alot. We used to scatter it at the very least if we had no bag in trafficked areas. I am sitting in hospital right now with my son very pissed off so their is my two cents. Clean up your horse shit you lazy arseholes 😂😂😂
beppebz@reddit
If you are from the countryside then you genuinely would not care about a bit of horse shit on the road every so often. I imagine most of these complaints come from people that move to the country as from cities / towns and then also complain about tractors harvesting and church bells ringing
herefromthere@reddit
A bottle or a crisp packet don't disintegrate in a few days. Dog shit hangs around longer too, it's stickier.
MurderousButterfly@reddit
This is my feeling, too
BestKeptInTheDark@reddit
Plus when they are in a fancy patade they have the opposite of 'feed bags' on... Maybe they would be too small for a whole day though..
SecurityTemporary849@reddit
Put dog shit in your garden and see how your garden grows.
Balls_R@reddit
What actually happens?
-mmmusic-@reddit
horse poo makes good fertilizer because they eat mostly grass, dog poo does not because they eat mostly meat
EventualOutcome@reddit
Whos says Im not trying to grow meat?
Playful_Stuff_5451@reddit
Then you'd use viagra instead of dog shit.
Ankh4921@reddit
🤣
MadamKitsune@reddit
In that case hand lotion would probably work better, but if dog poo is your thing then... ewww!
Consistent_Rich_153@reddit
I live in a rural area and people sell horse poo for this reason.

MikhailxReign@reddit
Does pretty well. You can buy a specific type of microb to add to you compost pile that will break down dog turds.
wales-bloke@reddit

jeremyascot@reddit
Oh, I do, I do
Dirty boy
CharringtonCross@reddit
Lots of reasons. We don’t have too many horses walking around on the pavements here. And dog shit really stinks.
Consistent_Rich_153@reddit
I live in a rural area and you'd be surprised how much horse poo there is in the streets.
xp3ayk@reddit
But it's not on the pavement and so it's not at rusk of being stepped in
Consistent_Rich_153@reddit
Not quite. While we do have pavements in many areas, there are quite a few villages that are pretty historic with no pathways. There's just a road. Moreover, there are many trails and trailways which are used as paths, and these are covered in horse poo.
Fucklebrother@reddit
And?
CharringtonCross@reddit
Oh I know what it can be like. Just never really bothered me anywhere near as much as dog shit on the pavement.
MrBrainsFabbots@reddit
Horse poo should be cleaned up, but t I would personally argue that horse poo isn't really dirty. I hate picking up dog shit (With a bag over my hand of course) but am not fussed at all when I have to finger a bit of horse shit out from underneath the gates when mucking out. In my mind it's just brown grass.
Dont_trust_royalmail@reddit
i would pay you good money for a bag of horse poo.
dog poo, not so much
SamVimesBootTheory@reddit
Dog poo is more of a health hazard than horse poo as horses are herbivores which is part of the reason
zCoxxy@reddit
I get that but end of the day if your animal walks around the street shiting everywhere, I feel you should kind of pick it up despite how health hazardous it is, especially if it’s the size of horse shit
Ankh4921@reddit
Can you imagine the size of the horse poo bag, and having to carry it around if it doesn’t in the bin? 😂😂
zCoxxy@reddit
Whoever is on the horse made a decision to own the horse, made a decision to walk the horse on public streets. You should clean up the shit on public streets inconvenience argument doesn’t really matter.
Ankh4921@reddit
Agreed - I am definitely FOR people picking up their pet’s 💩. I’m just having a good laugh picturing it for a horse. 🤣
THX39652@reddit
They used to have a nappy like attachment to catch it. However as stated previously there are no health risks with horse poo, unlike cats and dogs. Which is why you have to pick up dog poo.
Splodge89@reddit
There may be fewer (not no) health risks to horse poo, I still don’t want to track it into my car/house if I get it on my shoes though.
THX39652@reddit
Really? What would they be?
Splodge89@reddit
lol. I grew up in the middle of nowhere. With horsey family also in the same house.
mandvanwyk@reddit
I think they’ll have hose nappies on Temu?
3_box@reddit
There are special bags that attach to the back of the saddle (I assume) that hang under a horse's tail to collect poo. I've seen them used on horse-drawn vehicles.
They're quite clever and very effective. I wonder why they aren't compulsory.....🤔
cherrypez123@reddit

Smooth-Purchase1175@reddit
Now that's horseshit. :)
hmgr@reddit
The other thing as well 8nbsome countries horses are considered working animals, so they are allowed.
WhiskyMatelot@reddit
As well as the fact that dog poo contains meat and is hazardous to health whereas horse poo is vegetation and not particularly hazardous, there’s also the practical element of it being easy for a dog walker to stoop down and pick it up ( not that you’d know if from some of the disgusting people round by me!) whereas dismounting, holding the horse, scooping into a very large bag, and then remounting the horse might be a wee bit tricky.
Substantial_Fox_6721@reddit
I accept the health issues you've mentioned, but inconvenience shouldn't play into it.
Reasonable-Horse1552@reddit
It's not inconvenience, its safety. I'm sure you saw those loose horses galloping through London a few months ago...that would be happening all the time if people were expected to carry a shovel and plastic bag around and get off their horse to pick up their droppings every time. And horse poo isn't a health hazard in any way.
Lord0fPotatoes@reddit
Why not use horse poo catchers?
elliebow713@reddit
Highly impractical and pretty impossible to use when riding. The movement of the horse would be greatly restricted, and besides that, many horses would not tolerate something being strapped to them like that.
AnselaJonla@reddit
Yep there's a reason they're typically seen on carriage/draft horses, rather than riding horses.
Current-Wasabi9975@reddit
I wondered this too after seeing them on horses in Brugge.
Substantial_Fox_6721@reddit
Still seems mad to me. If something is so dangerous that you can't clean up it's shit, then perhaps it's too dangerous to be on a road in the first place?
I actually don't really care or mind the horse poo issue if I'm honest, I just can't stand the mental gymnastics people go through.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
When the government is getting rid of bridleways and public access, a lot of riders have no choice to be on roads even if its to get from one bridleway to another. Do you think if they had a choice they'd rather be hacking through parkland or woods or risking their lives and their horses lives on a road?
(Working animals such as those with police are obviously there for a reason on roads and in very busy public places, which is a different conversation of course)
mrpimplesquirter@reddit
I am a vegan with a bad back, I will now use this argument in an unrelated court case involving public indecency.
miowiamagrapegod@reddit
Can we.... not post this kind of utter spam
Buffsteve24@reddit
City of York Council once wanted the horses who pulled the carriages in the city centre to wear nappies...
Reasonable-Horse1552@reddit
Not nappies, its basically a cloth that sits underneath their tail attached to the traces of the carriage. I'm assuming there are a lot of horses in a city centre, which would cause a large build up. The odd bit of horse poo from a couple of riding horses is a bit different.
Buffsteve24@reddit
referred to as dung catchers in this article, I can't actually believe it was 21 years ago!!
Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit
They do use them in Blackpool though, for the carriage horse on the promenade…
toonlass91@reddit
Judging by where I live, I must be one of the only people who picks it up. Loads around my way leave it lying
chalkhomunculus@reddit
are we talking horse or dog here?
toonlass91@reddit
Dogs. Always pick up after mine but the amount I have to dodge while out is ridiculous
Character_Arachnid65@reddit
Posh people have horses, poor people don’t….I imagine that has something to do with it 🤣
AlphaScar@reddit
Horse poop is great for gardening. Our local zoo even sells lion shit. Never put it on my roses but it scares the shit out of the local cats. I haven’t seen one cat shit in my garden since. Highly recommend.
JaquieF@reddit
Some people used to shovel up horse poo to put in their gardens.
Cam_Sco@reddit
Horse poop isn't actually as safe as you think as the horses are usually on industrial strength worming and other medication. Other animals come along and eat it, then OD on the medication. One of my dogs is a devotee of eating and rolling in horse muck.
elliebow713@reddit
Horse medication such as wormers is a once off, maybe once or twice a year. And your dog would have to have the opportunity to eat a date quantity before it does any damage.
Also, I feel like dog owners should not let their dogs freely eat horse manure lmao
_Nette_@reddit
it took genuinely about 3 seconds for my dog to shovel probably two big mouthfuls of horse crap into his gob. most owners don't let their dogs eat manure. it's unfortunately his passion 😕
Markmark1974@reddit
Because horse poo is lovely
Swimming_Possible_68@reddit
Probably because there are far, far more dogs pooing in the UK than horses.
Even on public bridleways it's pretty unusual to come across horses, the amount of horse poo you encounter in day to day life is an absolute fraction of that produced by dogs.
I grew up in rural England in the 80s. In the time when people didn't clear up after their dogs, and white dog poo was a thing. It was also a village where horse riding was far more common than in urban environments, so seeing people riding horses was relatively commonplace.
How many times did I step in dog shit? Loads, countless times, and it's disgusting, hard to remove and it stinks.
How many times did I step in horse manure? Never. And even if I did, due to their diet it is a very different consistency and aroma...
I did, however, once experience a nearly unfortunate event riding my bike as a boy, coming up behind some horse riders just as one of the horses decided it was time to release its load... Just missed me fortunately, but had it not that would not have been pleasant!
ItzMidnightGacha@reddit
Uh- i honestly don’t know…
juanito_f90@reddit
Horse manure doesn’t cause blindness.
rinkydinkmink@reddit
this is the correct answer, it seems most people online these days aren't old enough to remember that this was in fact the reason why leaving dog poo lying around was banned in the first place
eleanor_dashwood@reddit
As a woman in her mid-thirties, I was unaware of this. It’s just one data-point but it supports your theory.
juanito_f90@reddit
I bet they don’t remember white dog shit either!
aldomacd1987@reddit
Finally can get shitfaced without having to worry about blindness
Cam_Sco@reddit
If the horse is on ivermectin, and a dog ingests horse manure, it can cause blindness and death of the dog. Lovely. Of course, it also cures covid according the donald.

Estimate number of dogs in the UK: 12-13million
Estimate number of horses in the UK: 1 million

rural/urban ration of horses: 20% (0.2 mil) : 80% (0.8 mil).
What a non-issue. Pick up that stinky dog shite, and please don't hang it in trees like grim baubles!
Dave_Unknown@reddit
Average horse 💩 per day: 15kg Average dog 💩 per day: 0.34kg
It takes 44 dogs to produce the same amount as horses. Yet you say there’s only 12 times more dogs…
elethiomel_was_kind@reddit
Meh…. it’s not a useful comparison. Dogs almost exclusively use our streets as a toilet once or twice each day (if they’re luck dogs) and are omnivorous. Horses are herbivores which crap all day long - almost exclusively in a field.
MikhailxReign@reddit
Still alot of horse shit tho.
antlered-godi@reddit
Dogs are meat eaters and so dog poo carries far more harmful bacteria.
Twisted-Lemur@reddit
Because horse owners are posh
DrySlap@reddit
100 times yes! Dog poo really upsets everyone but huge piles of horse poo fine apparently. Not for me!
Spare_Tyre1212@reddit
Iirc there was an issue in the nineteenth century in NYC when the streets were literally feet deep in horseshit. No doubt London and other large cities were exactly the same.
personlolfoot@reddit
Horses take very large poops
VillageHorse@reddit
The day that dog shit is highly coveted and sold by the bag-load is the day this discussion can even begin to start.
Until then, you either know the difference or you are a maniac and putting dog shit on your tomatoes.
oliviaxlow@reddit
Because horses consume plant matter. Dogs consume meat. One is much more of a health hazard.
geishagirl257@reddit
If horses were shitting in the middle of pavements like dogs then people would have more of an issue with it.
Otherwise-Milk-3509@reddit
My grandad would put the horse poo in his garden. Good for the flowers he said.
Middle--Earth@reddit
Because it's free fertilizer and soil organic matter improver.
Normally you'd have to buy the stuff.
Nobody is going to queue up to buy dog shite.
rinkydinkmink@reddit
All correct except for the last part - it's long gone culturally, but used to be used in, I believe, fulling or dyeing? Something like that. Or maybe it was phosphorous extraction. Anyway people used to go around and collect it and actually pay people for it. Not a fun job. I know urine was collected since Roman times for fulling.
Middle--Earth@reddit
I'm not sure what fulling is, but I know that the Romans used urine for doing their laundry because the ammonia content was a good cleaner.
I think that dog poop nowadays isn't much good for anything because of modern dog feed content and bacteria, but I could be mistaken there.

Why is it not unacceptable for people to allow their domestic pet cats to shit in gardens around the neighbourhood?
rinkydinkmink@reddit
their poop doesn't have the parasites that can make children go blind, basically
chalkhomunculus@reddit
i mean, that would require following your cat into gardens around the neighborhood. i'd rather cat shit than a random human with a shit shovel in my garden, not that i'm advocating for more cat shit in gardens. i keep my cats indoors
spaceshipcommander@reddit
Because rich people own horses and poor people don't. Pretty much the answer.
Matterbox@reddit
Horse poo is just chewed up grass.
Dog crap is rotting processed meat etc, and stinks.

No-Beat2678@reddit

Matterbox@reddit
Yeah sure.
Mistress_Ploppy@reddit
Not that old (horse) chestnut
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
I’m guessing because dogs generally eat man-made food items, which don’t decompose as well as natural foods that horses eat.
eerst@reddit
No. It's meat versus veg.
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
Not all dogs eat meat, or even wet food.
lemon-fizz@reddit
Because anyone who forces their dog to be a vegetarian is a moron. People feel pretty strongly about that so the downvotes aren’t weird at all.
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
Who said anything about being a vegetarian?
I said they may not be fed meat. I buy my dogs dry food which aren’t meat based. I’m not suggesting you turn your dog vegan ffs.
lemon-fizz@reddit
“Not all dogs eat meat” implies that the dogs you are referencing are on a vegetarian or vegan diet does it not? Hence why everyone is downvoting you. You’re the one not grasping what you’re putting across.
“I buy my dogs dry food which isn’t meat based”
I don’t know what you’d call that then ^ jfc lol. Are you ok?
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
Mate what the hell are you on about? I typed in plain English:
not all dogs can eat meat. My wife runs a dog rescue and two in at the moment are intolerant to raw and cooked meat
not all dogs eat meat. This can either be because they have a diet of non-meat based foods, or their owners cannot afford to feed them meat
I’m not sure why you couldn’t understand a basic statement that was both factually true and nuanced at the same time, but here we are.
I’m not even sure what your last sentence means. I said I buy my dogs dry food and you say “I don’t know what you’d call that then”…it’s rice and wheat based with oils and proteins. What is that but “not meat”?
-mmmusic-@reddit
well, they should.
eerst@reddit
Wet/dry doesn't matter. And yes most dog food is primarily animal products.
shortercrust@reddit
I got sheep shit on my walking jeans a few weeks ago. Still haven’t washed them. Not that bothered. If I’d got the same quantity of dog shit on them I might have just binned them. One is mildly yucky, the other is disgustingly repellent and I think that’s more biological than cultural.
tayviewrun@reddit

Lower_Palpitation_82@reddit
Heard some people put horse poo on their rhubarb, we have custard on ours.
SadAnnah13@reddit
This is a hill that I am willing to die on. Not much pisses me off more than being out and about in my wheelchair, and not being able to get along a road, because there are multiple piles of horse poo blocking the way. Why don't horse riders stop once they realise the horse is pooing? Even that would be better, so that it would all be in one place, but no they continue walking for several metres and make it impossible to get through.
Fortunately I live in a town now, rather than the middle of nowhere, so it's rare to see horse poo on the roads, but I still think it's unacceptable to leave massive piles of it everywhere. Of course they're not going to pick it up, I mentioned it to a horsey friend once and she said getting off the horse and picking it up would be difficult. I'm sure they could invent some telescopic handled poo picker lol.
vmeldrew2001@reddit
I don't see why some sort of container couldn't be fashioned to capture the horse poo that is attached to the back of the saddle or something. All of the 'engineering' that has gone into making the saddle, reins, styrups, etc, something could be created, if anyone gave enough of a shit about it. Pun intended.
elliebow713@reddit
Horses are living animals, it's not just a case of strapping something to their backside and calling it a day, horses are flighty and 99% of them would not tolerate something like that.
There are a fair few devices that catch the manure, but again, horses are living animals and do not like something that could restrict their movement, as well as spook them.
Key-Twist596@reddit
Two reasons.
Dig poo is hazardous to health and horse poo isn't as horses don't eat meat.
It's impractical and potentially dangerous for a horse rider to get off a horse to collect the poo. Most horses wouldn't accept a bag tied to their behinds to catch the poo, so that's not an option.
Reasonable-Horse1552@reddit
