Do posh/middle class people not wear pyjamas/joggers outside of bedroom?

Not specifically class - though your idea of suitable attire at home may vary depending on your background. Maybe a bit generational. Might also depend on your job. If you are doing something that gets you sweaty and dirty then you may feel the need to change when you get home. Similarly, if you wear a uniform or very formal gear for work. If you spend most days sitting at a desk in a comfortable office wearing some kind of smart casual outfit then there is little need beyond taking off your jacket and tie. Also, I'm an old git. "Lounge wear" didn't exist until recently. Pyjamas were for bed. If I'm going to hang out at home, I'm going to wear some more casual trousers/shorts and an open necked shirt. I like to differentiate between bed wear and day wear. I don't feel properly awake and comfortable until I get dressed.

What a bizarre question! I never wear joggers and I never will. I don’t wear pyjamas either. When I come home from work I stay in the same clothes until going to bed. What’s the point in changing?

At the risk of sounding like a twat, yes I think it is a snob thing. I don't wear lounge clothes or pyjamas outside of the bedroom, nor does my partner unless it's the last hour or so before bed. I see it as lazy slob behaviour. The extreme example is where people lounge about in their pyjamas so long they don't bother to get dressed at all and go out in dressing gowns etc. The only time I'll go downstairs in a dressing gown is in an emergency or if someone unexpected knocks on the door.

I’m Canadian so can’t claim to be part of the UK’s class divide, but I am 100% a snob about clothing. I will clarify that I will never actively judge someone (as in, treat them differently) for their clothing, but if someone is always in joggers, or goes about their life in joggers or a tracksuit? I am absolutely judging that as being lazy and slobbish. Unless working manual labour, I don’t get this ‘outdoor and indoor’ clothes thing. I don’t dress nicely outside and then poorly inside. I just dress nicely. If people find jeans uncomfortable they’re wearing the wrong jeans.

I get in from work, I stay in work clothes till I bathe or go to bed. On my day off I can stay in my hoodie and thick joggers unless I have to go out, then I stay in my outdoor clothes till bed/bath.

Possibly age? I grew up when joggers (trackie bums) were for PE lessons. Wouldn't occur to me to wear them by choice. Too thick and sweaty. I do wear pyjamas when it's cold and will wander round the house in them. Other times of year I'd put on a dressing gown or just get dressed. I've never felt the need to 'put on something comfy' when I get home, because my day clothes aren't uncomfortable. Just take shoes off and maybe put slippers on.

I wasn’t middle classs by any standards - but it was a rule in my house that you were up, clean and dressed every morning - I lived on my own for 15 years before I wore a pair of pyjamas into the kitchen! Might be an age thing.

I’m kind of posh (I know more than one titled person) and had a fairly posh upbringing. I’m also 50. I would never wear lounge clothes or pyjamas at home except for being ill, or if I’ve come home soaking wet or some such. Even every day in Covid I would get washed and dressed. Now this doesn’t mean dressed up, but actual clothes. One titled person I know, who is in her 90s looks like a bag woman. I don’t judge people on what they wear in their own homes, or nipping out to the shops in PJs but I do judge people who do a full supermarket shop in pyjamas. And I do judge Flannels. It looks all fancy but it’s still joggers that look like you’ve shit yourself.

Bizarre question. I would consider myself middle class and I wear joggers / casual clothing inside. The only reason I may have jeans etc on is if I’ve just come home and been busy doing other stuff. As for pyjamas, those come off as soon as I get out of bed.

This is now more generational than class-based I’d say. Older people are less likely to change into their comfies at home. But expensive loungewear (posh trackies) became a huge thing in covid and has continued.

I am scrappy working class immigrant from Eastern Europe. I am fully dressed like I am going to do something important. I just dont like joggers or whatever is comfy. So, I dont think it is dependent on class, or some sort of education. I have actually never thought about how I look like, I mean who gives a shit. Why care what your 75ish housemates think?

It's an age thing. My MIL spends a good 90 mins every morning picking an outfit, doing her hair and makeup and then spends the entire day watching TV or on her tablet. Leaves the house maybe twice a week and has visitors about the same. Meanwhile my wife, her daughter will happily get up on a lazy Saturday or Sunday change out of her pajamas into her "dayjamas" (leggings, fluffy socks and a hoodie) and then chill in them all day.
