Srapture@reddit
If it lets me configure the options I actually want, I'm fine with it. If not, that's the whole point of subway ruined. If it ain't Italian herbs and cheese, 2 types of salami (I don't know what the difference is), turkey, American cheese, olives, jalapenos, red onions, and extra spicey chipotle sauce, I ain't having it.
AIL97@reddit
So the price is lower because you don't need as much staff, right? Right?
East-Direction6473@reddit
lol
Bob-omberman@reddit
I used these once at a service station and the options limited some of your choices, then person got about 3 different things wrong and I wasnāt certain it was my sub to be able to correct them as it went.
Does undermine one of the best bits for me really, but maybe thereās some perk to itā¦?
Sedulous280@reddit (OP)
It seems like the benefit is they give less ingredients out. Three sweet corn , One olive š«
-DoctorSpaceman-@reddit
I think this is the main reason. They have been stingy for months and I always watch and usually ask them to add more on. Canāt do it now so just not gonna bother going anymore.
Low_Tackle_3470@reddit
Thereās a local bakery near me that make their own subs, been going for a while, once a week usually. Mentioned to the lady I miss the ranch from subway over chitchat and the next week she had some and asked if Iād like ranch, Iāll never go anywhere else.
CaerwynM@reddit
There's nothing like subway near me, I'd kill for something like hat. You can't even find the right kind of bread to make it at home
mynaneisjustguy@reddit
No you wouldnāt. Subway always has and continues to be dirt. Donāt eat that shit mate.
TechnicPython@reddit
Well aren't you a Ray of sunshine š
mynaneisjustguy@reddit
About things that are worth it; yeah, I am. Subway isnāt a thing anyone should be looking forward to. Itās like a dodgy kebab; have we had one at 3 am after clubbing? Yeah. Should we be ashamed of it? Absolutely.
SpiderCow313@reddit
I work at subway and have to say youāre completely wrong, youāre just not going to the right subway, at the location I work at I never skimp out on ingredients, I even ask to make sure itās enough. Iād recommend going to a subway thatās inside a gas station, we usually work alone so we donāt have to worry about a manager watching over our shoulder
mynaneisjustguy@reddit
??? You may be replying to the wrong comment. My problem with subway is the terrible bread, the disgusting processed meats, and the plastic cheese. Not the amount of salad.
FireFly_209@reddit
Different people like different things. If you arenāt into it, thatās fine. If other people enjoy it, then thatās fine too. Let people enjoy what they like.
mynaneisjustguy@reddit
Itās bay about like, itās about going to your grave three decades early.
ohhhhhyeeeessss@reddit
I think subway aren't often perceived as unhealthy as other big fast food chains, which is very wrong. I can't believe how much people pay for them either
FireFly_209@reddit
I think the majority of the perception of Subway as the āhealthyā fast food option is purely down to marketing. Subway has always heavily pushed the āeat freshā mantra from the beginning. As for how healthy they actually are, that depends, but for the most part theyāre not as healthy as the branding and marketing would lead you to believe.
As for pricing? Yeah, theyāre expensive, but so is McDonalds these days. Most big chain fast food places have capitalised on their well-known brand status, and charge more knowing people will still pay. Doesnāt make someone a bad person for choosing Subway. It just means they have a preference and are willing to pay for it. And thatās their choice to make.
Gullible-Lie2494@reddit

Wiwey-M80@reddit
nah man i love subway, the chocolate cookies are fucking amazing, especially when theyāre soft and just kinda bend when you bite into them but not too soft where itās like theyāre not cooked enough, and just a sub with meatballs and pepperoni, not too complicated for them to mess up but just good enough to want more
mynaneisjustguy@reddit
Thatās truly disgusting. Everything you have written there is disgusting and I feel truly sorry for you.
throwaway_t6788@reddit
they pretend they are healthy but 800+ calories etc.. for 5-6Ā£.. nah thanks

The bread subway use is shite compared to some normal stuff you can get at a bakery, either independent or a supermarket.
Low_Tackle_3470@reddit
They sell the bread in Aldi
kidad@reddit
Subway is a franchisee-owned operation - youāre just as likely to find a local owner behind the branded business as the ālocal bakeryā.
Low_Tackle_3470@reddit
Not really. This bakery has been here since the 60s they own the building, they are rural and family run, not really the same as a subway or kfc.
codemonkeh87@reddit
Something I love about being up north vs where I grew up as we dont seem to have them down south.. the local "sarnie shop". They're basically subway but better and local family owned. They have tons of different fillings, sauces and such, choose your bread, butter or margarine, fillings, sauces and generally fairly cheap too. Theres a banging one near me and the chap and his wife who run it are great too.
MACintoshBETH@reddit
Yeah thisāll definitely be it, itās so they can sneak in smaller portions without having to do it in front of you. Stops you asking for another item too after theyāve already portioned out what was already asked for.
It also probably helps Subway to track which items are chosen/used, as Iām not sure how that would be tracked otherwise.
Puzzled-Cucumber5386@reddit
We used to track it by how much was used. Itās pretty easy.
Lucky-Big-9050@reddit
This was covered in an excellent video about Subway on youtube, it pointed out the fact they unlike macdonalds end up giving out more ingredients than they would like, and if they try to control portions people feel hard done by, compare with macdonalds where the hamburgers are premade
sillygoofygooose@reddit
The only reason to ever go to subway was to get them to dump far too many olives and jalapeƱos into a sub
SweatyMammal@reddit
Mcdonalds found that people order more than they usually would from these screens. Particularly men would start ordering 2 burgers for their 1 meal. No social embarrassment and being able to browse a menu without pressure.
Thereās some pretty noticeable financial benefits for the restaurant (less staff costs, increased sales, less pickles in your sub)
Terrible_Ad2779@reddit
The perk is for the company who don't have to hire so many people.

The perk is they need less staff to serve the same number of customers.
XIXXXVIVIII@reddit
It works great for the menu is more "static" like McDonald's, Greggs, Starbucks, etc. But for places like subway; where the entire USP is an infinite, dynamic, scalable combination of ingredients; it just doesn't work.

Kgshink@reddit
Former assistant manager of 2 subways here. For the past 3 years subway has been making strides towards the trends of its competition
Thatās why deli meat no longer comes pre sliced And why the seasonal menu items are effectively gone, replaced by a menu of premade sandwich recipes.
Since subway was acquired by Roark capital in April this year changes were even more radical. You can probably expect subways menu to become more bloated by side items and other non sub foods.
It honestly sucks I love being able to get whatever sandwich I want
Elegant_Tailor_5541@reddit
This is disgraceful as I constantly have to ask to add more of everything could someone who works in Subway actually tell me if they are being asked to be stingy intentionally with the salad
Puzzled-Cucumber5386@reddit
With the lettuce, not usually. With the olives, absolutely! Iām not a current employee because I quit 3 years ago after our stores were held up 4 times in 2 months but before that I was there for 4 years at 2 different stores, same owner. The recipe for a 6in is 3 olives, 6 for a footlong. Tomatoes and cucumbers I believe was 2 for 6in, 4 for footlong. We were able to do as much as the customer wanted with everything except olives. Iāve never liked Subway but my family does. After working there and seeing the quality of food and how often dates are changed so youāre in compliance if an inspector comes in, Iāve told my family not to eat there. Every owner does things their way but even if done perfectly the quality of food is crap. Anyway, thatās my opinion on Subway. Oh and also, that new ordering thing really looks like itād make hiding the crappy food sooo much easier š¤®

I am very socially confident.
I happily chat with restaurant staff, hairdressers, people at spas etc.
But at subway itās just too stressful. They seem to bombard you with questions that I donāt really know and donāt want to ask, usually resulting in a sandwich with many mistakes.
Ok-Fox1262@reddit
For some of us it is. Not everyone is socially confident.
Flashy-Pea8474@reddit
Best way to get confident is exposure and something like this will lead to more people losing social confidence, who are losing more and more to accommodate those who do not have social confidence.
Choice. People need choice. If I want my groceries scanned I still have that choice of human interaction. Posting a parcel I still have the choice to interact with a human. With this I donāt have a choice and this is where subway have got it wrong.
Accommodate everyone. Everyone. Those with and without social confidence.
mmm_I_like_trees@reddit
Doesn't work like that for me. Being more confident speaking to people in one area of my life drains me to do it for other areas.

jamesick@reddit
not all people buying from subway are adults.
not all adults are the same.
as long as you also have the option to speak to a person then all this is doing is catering to different people.
maybe being an adult is appreciating that not everyone is the same and many will have needs/preferences which you do not.

Excellent_Tear3705@reddit
I did the same in Burger King.
I knew exactly what I wanted. Whopper and some cheesy nugs.
Couldnāt find a menu, it was like an iPad game for toddlers. Bright lights, boxes, a million damn things on the screen.
Gave it a minute trying to find a simple list of foodā¦what youād think this bandit looking fucking thing was meant to do, then fucked off to KFC instead.
MargThatcher12@reddit
Iāve seen so many responses that are very much akin to yours, that these menus are hard to navigate with pop-ups, distractions, āa million things in the screenā.
I donāt think these machines could be more simple lol. Left side, categories of food (burgers, subs, sides, snacks, drinks, set meals), then you use the rest of the screen to choose what you want.
Iām going to hazard a guess that most people who are complaining about these machines are older folk or wear glasses/contacts - I just canāt see anyone under the age of 30, with a smartphone and a list of other devices, struggling to operate this.
Revadarius@reddit
I'm 34, even 10 years ago when McD's started using these screens they've been a nightmare to navigate. They make the menus overly complicated and pricing things up. There's a reason their staff are trained to use their tills because they have similar menus they need to navigate in order to process orders.
I'm pretty tech savvy, but some of these e-menu are either difficult to navigate or limit the options you can make at the counter or even on an app like Just Eat.
And all that is before any possible technical issues or malfunctions with the machine.
I refuse to use them, I'll just order in at home via an app or use a counter if I'm ever unfortunate to be in an establishment
Excellent_Tear3705@reddit
Iām in my 30s, but Iām a software engineer / product designer.
It wasnāt really that I couldnāt operate it, but rather I couldnāt be fucked navigating around a system trying to force me to purchase what they wanted me to, rather than helping me order what I wanted.
MargThatcher12@reddit
Thatās a much more understandable argument tbf lol I know the machines at maccies are slow as hell and need you to practically punch the screen to select anything. Theyāre simple but just not functional.
Excellent_Tear3705@reddit

rebelious77@reddit

FinalEgg9@reddit
I'm fine with anything else, really. It's specifically the barrage of questions in Subway that I dislike.
fusionzone04@reddit
Same tbh, I don't go to Subway enough to know what I want, so I dislike all the questions
dadsuki2@reddit
I always had a problem with that myself, I got it down to a method that works perfectly for me recently, if I just ask "can I have an X on y, toasted, please" they just do that for you, ask if you want toppings or sauce then it's not so bad. Helps I have a regular Subway order.
(Steak and cheese on Hearty Italian with JalapeƱos and sweet chilli sauce, if anyone's interested)
zippohippo12@reddit
Idk bro, this sounds kinda odd. Not that hard. If the screens help I guess.
KawaiiPooPoo@reddit
Itās not social anxiety. I love shopping for anything with human contact. But subway overdoes it. And thereās too many points of back and forth for something that not that valuable and frankly Iām not there for the experience but the quick sandwich. Itās not fine dining
Paranub@reddit
the key is to stop the back and forth by clearly stating what you want, theres no need to wait for the question of "what bread" when you already know the bread you want..
So its "Hi, please can i have a spicy Italian on herbs and cheese please, Cheese and toasted"
theres no follow up question he can ask you. the next will be
"any salad?"
You - "yea please. jalapenos, lettuce and a few onions please. Barbecue sauce. i'll take it as a meal deal please, a latte and a chocolate cookie"
You got asked a total of 2 questions in the whole encounter. the first isnt even a question really, he just greeted you.
KawaiiPooPoo@reddit
I have ADHD thatās too many choices. Half the item what I choose they donāt even have at that moment
Flashy-Pea8474@reddit
Why donāt you just say I want a ham sub and just make it whatever way you see fit?
KawaiiPooPoo@reddit
Itās not so simple.
Paranub@reddit
face an interrogation?
Them - "hi, what can i get you?"
You - "Hi, please can i have a spicy Italian on herbs and cheese please, Cheese and toasted"
you wait for it to be toasted.
Them - "any salad?"
You - "yea please. jalapenos, lettuce and a few onions please. Barbecue sauce. i'll take it as a meal deal please, a latte and a chocolate cookie"
cashier rings it up and you walk out.
You had 2 questions asked of you in the whole encounter. i get some people struggle with public encounters but cmon, subway isnt the spanish inquisition
AdministrativeBlock0@reddit
That's fair.bthis makes Subway more accessible for some people. If that's a bigger group than the number of people who'll stop going because these screens make the sandwich worse then it's a good business idea.
I'd be very surprised if that's true though.
What Subway should do is have one or two of these screens for people who just want to order and not talk to anyone, and keep the old line as well.
Also, fwiw, Subway has an app you can order on...

Character-Carpet7988@reddit
No, that's not the point of Subway. The point of Subway is that it lets you build your own sandwich. Personally, I always prefer self service ordering, but the more customisation is involved, the more I want it. I actually go out of my way to find Subways with self service orders, as it makes the process much easier. Now to be fair, I think the "old school" ordering system should still be available and kiosks should be just an additional option (as is the case in most Subways with kiosks I encountered).

But I want my jalapenos and olives in before cooking š
Paranub@reddit
bloody hate this order screens.
"do you want medium or large"
Medium
"here have a look at optional extras"
Skip
"finished order?"
Yes
"Would you like to go large for a small extra fee?"
no i already selected medium
"Would you like to round up your order and donate to a charity?"
no
"table or counter service?"
table
then theres no table number signs available to i have to choose counter.
then the receipt printer as run out of paper, so i go to the counter, and stare at the person behind the till awkwardly while i wait, who could have taken my order in the first place..

The actual insanity is the price of those silly sandwiches
Immediate-Repair1574@reddit
Less workers/jobs means more people on their phones with more time to post sht online & spending their social benefits on consuming sht goods - whilst deciding which sh*t fast food is gonna clog your arteries the slowest š
Bacon4Lyf@reddit
Someoneās still got to make the sandwich, which was the same guy that took your order, no oneās losing any jobs
Immediate-Repair1574@reddit
Last time I went into Subway (admittedly before we communicated with digital order screens) the person that took your order, prepared the sandwich and took your cash wasnāt the same one. This is about efficiency and āefficiencyā, nowadays, generally calculates into less human effort. But hey, what do I know š¤·āāļø

Reasonable_OnionUK@reddit
Subway is a shit tasteless rip off anyway, itās not far off a tenner for a decent footlong now and every option tastes the fucking same. I hope they go out of business
Zardozin@reddit
Used to be one with a drive through by me, I wish it had this.
I think Iād prefer this to standing behind the person who wants to argue about portion sizes and how the girl making the sandwich is a racist for not giving them extra meat.
Godzillaisamonster@reddit
When AI has brought back Michael Parkinson from the dead for podcasts, it's not really a surprise to see more automation popping up in shops & stores, this is the future for now at least :(

Ordered at subway is one of my pet peeves, so I actually prefer this
North_Fortune_4851@reddit
This is lamentable. Now I'm gonna get those burnt meatballs from the bottom of the trough.. measly amounts of sauce.. I might just swerve it off
TechboyUK@reddit
It will speed things up as many people go to the counter and are indecisive.
Also, because the government has increased employer National Insurance contributions, companies will be hiring a lot fewer staff and using things like self-service automation a lot more (Subway, Sainsburyās and Waitrose have added this recently).
We will also likely see leisure and retail places reduce their operational days quite significantly.
petey23-@reddit
Self service in supermarkets has been a thing for at least 15 years.
TechboyUK@reddit
Yes, but look at shops now, many are removing existing checkouts to add a lot more self service.
petey23-@reddit
It's been going on for 15 years. Labour policies aren't the thing that's caused it.
TechboyUK@reddit
The recent Labour budget has had a sudden and significant impact to staff costs. It is explained here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84XoX4aQcqI

Seems a bit dog whistly lad.

Many guys in public toilets don't wash their hands 𤢠So I'm not keen on public touch screens! Especially where you order, then eat with your hands!
I'll be carrying hand sanitiser with me everywhere!!!
RepresentativeEnd170@reddit
Went into my local one last week, spent a few minutes messing around trying to get the customisation correct, Wouldn't accept the offers on my app, eventually gave up and went and got a Greggs.
Deleted the App and washed my hands of the place, it has been going downhill for years anyway.
Considering a large amount of older people use Subway, it seems strange to implement a self ordering system and refuse to allow people to order over the counter and choose what they want as they go. That was always the big draw for me, the customisation.
Even McDonalds allow customers to still order at the counter if they don't want to order from a screen.
SpecialShanee@reddit
Thatās brilliant, I donāt mind talking to people.. but Iād much rather do it this way
nahfella@reddit
Self service is pretty normal in most of Europe lol
Lightweight_Hooligan@reddit
I eat a faily simple subway order, but hate having to stand behind indecisive customers who obviously have not been to subway before.
concr@reddit
This is to give them time to make the app orders (just eat, etc) I would expect
iDesignz1994@reddit
Subway isn't worth it. Screens or not.
No_Potato_4341@reddit
Every subway I've been to (I don't live in MK) has never had these ordering screens. So this is new to me.Ā
