Most of Russias nukes are of the tactical variety and can be written off as they have no means of delivering them. This leaves some 500 ICBMs that are a real threat. I feel that most of these ones are aimed at Europe as they are the immediate danger to Russia, but I expect a few ceremonial pop shots will be sent towards the US in a nuclear exchange. The only question now is how many of those ICBMs have working boosters, how many will be intercepted and how many have a warhead that is actually going to spark. Another factor is how much western intelligence has penetrated Russias military. Some of these guys may just outright refuse to fire in exchange for a payout.
whhe11@reddit
Yeah, um probably not. Russia knows that the only part of its military that matters for its survival is nuclear weapons. If they really were only capable of firing off 500 ICBMS, China and the US would decide to go on a joint military invasion and either country could easily knock down the majority of 500 ICBMs. Newer countries like China and Russia (in their current forms) have specific military branches for rockets/missiles and nuclear stuff because it's so central to their continued existence. Russia has lots of natural resources and has killed off a large portion of its fighting men, if it didn't maintain a real nuclear parity, which would be confirmed by satellites, spies ect, they're would very quickly be a real "special military operation" and they'd be occupied in a matter of months. Without an effective nuclear deterrent France or China alone would consider taking over Russia well they're weak.
BookMonkeyDude@reddit
Close. What they actually need is the credible *appearance* of a nuclear deterrent. While that sounds like the same thing, it's actually very different. Russia has a long history of leveraging deception in lieu of genuine capability, and it works surprisingly well. They show off a bit of technology that looks incredible, and performs well in a demonstration.. and we lose our minds and build something to counter that threat. It's only after we have spent billions that we come to find out that the Russian threat was not at all what it seemed. The classic example of this is how we got the F-15. The F-15, arguably the finest fighter jet ever produced in relation to its' contemporary peers, was designed and created in response to the Soviet Mig-25 which was *fast* and had all sorts of reported capabilities. Well, we could definitely confirm the speed and so we took the other claims seriously too. We built a super-plane that could actually do all the things that the Soviet claimed the Mig-25 could do, and then in 1976 a Soviet pilot defected and flew one to Japan where we got our first good close look at one. We had been had.. it *was* fast, but essentially destroyed its engine requiring a complete overhaul in order to achieve that speed. It still used vacuum tubes.
So, it's not that Russia doesn't have ICBMs.. or nuclear warheads.. it's capable of having them and maintaining them, it's whether they thought they could get away with the *appearance* of having a credible nuclear force and pocket the cash instead of spending it on the real deal.
phovos@reddit
That is just as relevant for the USA as it is Russia. I estimate at-least half our nuclear force, bomber force, fighter plane force, all aspects of US readiness are at least 50% of what they are reported to be.
BookMonkeyDude@reddit
Oh? What leads you to believe that? The last time I checked the US is the *only* world power capable of projecting significant military power globally and that can't be faked.
ky420@reddit
They had some failures in test launches lately. That one blew up the silo...I'd think in the current political climate they are updating and doing proper maintenance on these systems. They don't have the same issues with the mobile ones I don't think.
DoktorSigma@reddit
Uh, no?
Tactical nukes are small and versatile and they can be delivered by basically anything, from a conventional missile to even canons for some models. In fact, I consider them a larger problem exactly because of that versatility, they are not tied to an ICBM design. Also, despite being small, they are still catastrophic - what passes for "tactical" today is several times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.
improbablydrunknlw@reddit
Haven't they been using the Iskander a fair bit? They're nuclear capable, as well as whatever variant of the scud they're using.
JustUsDucks@reddit
Lots of qualifiers in that paragraph…
Unfair_Bunch519@reddit
Russia showed its ass to the entire world during their Ukrainian invasion. I can now make some safe assumptions about things that were absolutely unthinkable just a few years ago. Like what if Russian soldiers are playing Pokémon go inside the presidential bunkers? These guys have proven themselves to have stupidity that amazes me.
Big-Professional-187@reddit
Pokémon go had people using mock location apps that never left the house. It lead to some trespassing incidents. Even people getting killed in countries with landmines older than me.
Big-Professional-187@reddit
LNE? Nah. It will be a forced ceasefire in 2 weeks. This is Russia doing the "look over here, big scary things in Europe". Meanwhile our safe full of diamonds in another African country gets cracked and pilfered again to get pawned in China.
rocketscooter007@reddit
This how you secure an excellent peace deal. Russia is gonna get eastern Ukraine. I believe this is what's going to happen. Either through a decade of bloodshed or just make a peace deal already. There's no way Ukraine is getting eastern Ukraine back. Just my opinion obviously.
VonBoski@reddit
Likely, but it’s stupid to think Putin would stop there.
rocketscooter007@reddit
I mean, we said we'd stop at Germany. By we I mean NATO. It wasn't officially written down but when Germany re-unified and joined NATO we said we wouldn't need an inch more.... Of course we couldn't go much farther because of the Warsaw pact nations, but once the soviet union collapsed, we said ok we'll take those.
They are all liars, but at least we could stop some bloodshed for a time.
DoktorSigma@reddit
I agree. Ukraine will have to settle for a situation much like what we had with Eastern and Western Germany, for decades.
VeganBullGang@reddit
Ukraine is going to agree to the deal and then Putin will say no which will give Trump the excuse to fill Ukraine to the brim with weapons
Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
What?
Russia is collapsing... They're running out of conventional missiles.
Russia is completely and utterly fucked.
USA will never allow it because China will use our failure to act as a tactic against Taiwan.

How is wanting a peace deal being a doomer? That's the opposite of doom.
thefedfox64@reddit
I mean, it's pretty bold move on both sides. We won't give in, so either back us or let the world burn. Or, we will threaten nukes every time to get out way, and the red line will continually move until Russia has destroyed everything and everyone to the point where nukes would have been a better option.
Have eastern Ukraine with its radiation - tally ho old boy
rocketscooter007@reddit
Nuclear weapons is a bargaining chip, that's why everyone wants them. A peace deal will happen before a Nuclear exchange, imo.
thefedfox64@reddit
I think so, but I don't think it's because of that reason. I think because many people in the US believe that if they stop supporting Ukraine, the price of food will go down, and their economy will get better. It's an easy campaign promise to make, and it was effective in people's minds.
The sad reality is that Putin showed he is not a good military commander or leader. This cast large doubts on his presence. What should be interesting is seeing how long before the US tries to strong-arm everyone into not supporting Ukraine. Just to save face and say they brokered a peace deal. Oppression and giving up is not peace, it's exactly the opposite.

IsItAnyWander@reddit

Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
Essentially everyone.
The average western person has a higher standard of living than the richest king a century ago.
You can fly around the world for hundreds of dollars, and get food delivered to your face.
Famine and crime are near historic lows.
Essentially everything is better. We're just in a normal generational transitional period.
RadicalExtremo@reddit
This is such a flawed perspective. Yeah the average person has temperature controlled dwellings, refrigeration, car, recreational sex, but nobles in the day had control over life and death and of the economy and military, and they had servants to coon and clean and bathe them and make them as comfortable as possible given the circumstances. As a matter of fact, id rather be a medieval noble than a working class American. 🤦♂️
pretty_succinct@reddit
you can still have all that today as well.
RadicalExtremo@reddit
The point is was replying to is western people today have a better standard of living than nobility from the past, which isnt necessarily true.

The advent of indoor plumbing and antibiotics pretty much blow your thesis out of the water.
Go look at the average lifespan of every country in the past century.
Life is optionalality. Doesn't mean it'll be good, but it gives you a fighting chance.
The rest is hard to come up with some absolute metric.

They're using dummy ICBMs to gather information on what the anti missile response to them looks like, how well they still work, failure rate, accuracy ect. By using them if they're standard ones not modified to deceive observers, then they're also providing their enemies with invaluable information on their ICBMs performance that can be used to help make anti missile systems more effective.

Should Google anti ballistic missile systems
therapistofcats@reddit
I'd be curious on the success rates and how many we have... something with only 40 missiles and a 50% success rate would be less than ideal, yeah?
dadbod_Azerajin@reddit
70-80% with what information they are willing to give out on the systems they are willing to share we have

I know the Uk and us have laser systems we were testing when I was like In HS (mid 2000)

It's not a single interceptor % rate but an overall layered system success rate
therapistofcats@reddit
Per your first link
Also there are only 44 of them.
Per your 3rd link
So I don't see where you are getting lasers and 80% success rates from.
We have 44 interceptors with a 50% success rate. The article says if you shoot 4 interceptors you get a 97% success rate. So essentially we have 11 chances to shoot down incoming ICBMs.
TofuLordSeitan666@reddit
Don’t bother. Let them live in blissful ignorance.
TofuLordSeitan666@reddit
You just pull lasers out of your ass?
Lasers cannot shoot down terminal reentry vehicles due to physics.

DoktorSigma@reddit
So... they found that there's no anti missile response whatsoever?
I just saw lines of "meteors" raining from the sky and nothing from the ground hitting them.
Sunbownia@reddit
Not many countries can pull off intercepting ICBMs, Ukraine isn’t one of them. Even NATO’s not there yet—they’ve got Aegis Ashore, but that’s for regional missiles, not the ICBMs. The US military got the tech, but getting them to set up shop in Ukraine is a whole different ball game. Supposed ICBMs are "theoretical, never actually used" weapons, so no one has prepared for this to happen.
yehghurl@reddit
Intercepting an ICBM is like shooting a bullet with a bullet. They scary as fuck.
TofuLordSeitan666@reddit
It’s even harder than that. Once it gets to the point(terminal phase) in the video you are cooked. Midcourse is how we think we can get one or two(hint we can’t).
TofuLordSeitan666@reddit
We have zero capabilities against an ICBM like these at present. Zero Zilch Nada.
Ok_Factor5371@reddit
The US has exoatmospheric kill vehicles that just got used in Israel when Iran fired all those missiles. But Iran’s ICBMs aren’t as advanced as Russia’s.
BeneficialBack1264@reddit
The math and physics of interception has hard limits on where and when it's possible to intercept them. You can get them during boost, and near the peak of their arc. But that means you need an even faster interceptor. In an exchange from Russia to the US, in the past very few get intercepted. Much of this capability is classified, only estimated, this may have changed dramatically, but these systems are extremely expensive. Keep in mind they reach their targets in 30 minutes. They just move too fast near the terminal phase to do anything. These are also MIRVs. I don't think you have multiple anti-mirvs on a single defensive rocket.
Over the past year, I distinctly remember people thinking Russian MRBM and ICBMs probably haven't been maintained and aren't functional. Guess again.
Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
No they aren't.
They have no legit nuclear payloads for those rockets.
The corruption in Russia has made what they have so incredibly suspect after the failure of their conventional forces.
They have tactical nukes and that's likely it.
Tritium only lasts about 5ish years, and most of the brain trust was in Ukraine when the ussr broke up.
They're currently bartering with potatoes and our 80s technology atacms get through their air defense just fine.
We have interceptors for these. Ukraine does not.
It's just Sabre rattling because Russia is fucked.
That's why Putin is sacking military personnel like crazy. They stole the money and bought yachts and shit.
Russia is terrified that if they launch a legit icbm with a warhead it'll blow up in their face... Just like their "nato killer" sarmat did last month.
Blew up in the silo while they tried to Sabre rattle.
Substantial_Art_1449@reddit
So, first it was: Their shit doesn’t work. So now we know that their nuclear vehicles do work. Next it’s: they don’t have actual warheads of concern for these vehicles. Do you know this to be 100% a fact? Have you inspected their nuclear facilities and arsenal storage and seen this for yourself? You haven’t.
Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
What the dude below says.
And actually yes. My buddy was the colonel in charge of open Skies for the US DoD.
The delivery vehicles aren't the payload. Nuclear payloads go bad a lot faster than conventional munitions... Which they can barely manufacture.
So yeah, they can use old missiles, but they don't have enough warheads to justify using them.
If they use 1 they are dead.
MAD only works if you can actually kill your enemy.
If they launch 2 and we launch 50 that we know work.... It's not logical... They aren't suicidal and Putin is rich... You think he'd give up his cushy life? Not a chance. He's a pussy.
en_kon@reddit
To add to this, people need to factor in the administration change that's about to take place in the US and it having a more favorable approach with Putin's "peace" treaty.
If anything, he'd at least wait after that before going nuclear.
Bigbossbyu@reddit
We’re (the US) not launching nukes if Russia launches one in Ukraine lmao.
Not worth the destruction of half the country for a Russia nuke to Ukraine
Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
Of course not. That's the point. No one is afraid of them but people who believe they're a threat.
No one in Europe is afraid of them. They know full well Putin is full of shit and has a shit military. They can only handle meat grinders.
Substantial_Art_1449@reddit
You can say this stuff all day long, but you have provided zero evidence. “My friend worked the relevant program” isn’t sufficient evidence to back up your 100% factual claim.
irrision@reddit
It's a pretty safe bet given how collapsed the rest of their military infrastructure has turned out to be. In fact I'd bet the pillaging of nuclear systems was at an even higher rate than the rest of their military by the oligarchs. They had to figure no one would ever notice because it would never be used anyway.

FloRidinLawn@reddit
Hmm yes and no. Even for a split if each one had a nuke, how much coverage can one get…
It is the 1000s of nukes everyone would launch immediately that would just obliterate the world.

consciousaiguy@reddit
"Rods from God" was a conceptual weapon system that never came to fruition. It has nothing to do with ICBMs.
DoktorSigma@reddit
Indeed, but the dummies are probably just kinetic impactors. Technically, the concept is similar to rods from God, but suborbital.

Russia is a paper tiger and only has tactical nukes.
Instr-FTO@reddit
Forgive me, but that's just fantasy island thinking. They have them and would use them.
Their nuclear doctrine is nothing like the west. And if you believe they wouldn't use them, that's suicidal thinking.
Additionally, don't let propaganda fool you about Russia. They are just a modified version of the former Soviet Union. Nd Putin was the former gead of the KGB. Their senior leadership want the same as him...don't be fooled by the man behind the curtain
Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
No it isn't.
When was the last time they tested a nuke?
Their nuclear doctrine is bullshit. They changed it a few days ago and Ukraine fired the same day with no nuclear response... Because they don't have one and these are criminals who want bjs and yachts. Not suicide... Which is what using a nuke would be.
It costs the USA 50 billion a year to upkeep ours.

Feisty_Sherbert_3023@reddit
We use super computers, have tritium reactors and spend 50 billion a year just keeping our nukes ready.
They may have 1 operational reactor, are reliant on western sanctioned technology for any new missile builds.
It's also the only treaty Russia hides behind... Because if you can't test... Then people just assume the nukes work.
It's all a bluff. That's why they used old delivery systems to intimidate. They don't have anything real.
Plus, no one is invading Russia. Ukraine wants them out of Ukraine and they're done.

In a real nuclear exchange a good amount of the missiles will be dummy warhead's to save on costs, and exhaust interceptors at the target location. So it's likely they had plenty of these ready to go and theyre just making sure they still work at this point.
