How bad is it to use 1440p 240hz display with my build?

I built a new pc with a 7900xtx and a 9800x3d. Alienware 4k 240hz monitor is on sale for $900 rn and I’m hurting a little from said build but I can make it work if it’s somehow a bad idea to use my old monitor with this new build. Any advice with explanations?(I like to understand why things work the way they do lol)

With modern upscaling GPU tech, 1440p upscaled and 1080p native is nearly the same performance hit. No reason on gimping on the monitor.
Regarding refresh rate, the monitor doesn’t care what fps you have. You can lock it at 100 or at 60, you will still benefit from 144Hz or more.

What is the point of 240hz 4k when shit gets like 40fps from a 4090 at that resolution?

I wasn’t aware the performance was that bad lol, so I should stick with 1440 I guess?
SmoothCriminal7532@reddit
It can be that bad but yeah ur not getting anywhere near 240. Depends on the game.

Thank you!

My suggestion is a 60-144fps 4k monitor and a second 1440p one with 240ish. Prio the 1440p.

Monitors are hz not fps

Thanks capn.

The performance of what. Barring a triple A current titles, this is complete nonsense.
Your old monitor will be fine. The new monitor will be fine. You can game at 1440p on a 4k monitor, you can have lower framerates on a 240hz monitor.
Older games will have super high frame rates, newer triple A titles might not.
On top of this, high refresh rate monitors have lower input lag, less motion blur, and lower response times. Overall you get a more enjoyable experience regardless of the frame rate. Not just in gaming, but just using a mouse feels smoother.
If you're pushed to your limit on your budget, hold off on your monitor, if you can afford it , then get one. Theres not really a wrong decision here. 240hz monitors are great.
They may be a bit overkill for some, especially if you aren't a competitive first person shooter gamer, but still they're great. In my opinion, I think you reach deminishing returns after about 100fps, but I'm not really the target market for them. I chose my 4k monitor based on its colour accuracy, not it's refresh rate as I'm a designer.

They already have a 240hz monitor, going to 4k 240 won't reduce their input lag
Tjingus@reddit
Ah, I didn't grasp they had a 1440p already..
Still, my point stands. Plenty of opportunities to game at 4k with high frame rates. Depends on the game.
But with the added info, I don't think I would get a second high refresh rate monitor. 1440p is plenty. If I were to add a second monitor, I would want to pair colour accuracy or good HDR - something that undeniably adds to my set up.

1440p all day.
kyronami@reddit
I dont even like 4k, id take 1440p + the extra fps all day over 4k

It is horrible and will not work. You should go at least with 8k and 500hz!

Your setup is good for 1440p 240Hz. I use 1440p 240Hz and my 3080 is really struggling, I am holding out for a 5080 or 5090. Personally I think 4k 240Hz is really beyond current gpu’s and the monitors are just getting ready for future gen gpu’s. I’d still expect next gpu will still require DLSS and frame gen to drive 4K 240Hz.

Honestly, I don’t see the point in a 4k 240Hz monitor. By the time you see games actually running 4k 240Hz, your monitor’s lifespan would probably be gone.
Even if you downscale 4k to 1440p, you won’t get good quality due to non integer scaling. Considering that the lowest size monitor of 4k 240Hz is a 32” monitor, even downscaling to 1080p won’t look good.
The only time I can see 4k 240Hz being fully utilized for what you’re spending your money for, is if there was an actual 24” 4k 240Hz monitor available on the market, since you can play AAA games at 4k 60fps and competitive games at 1080p 240Hz nicely. But 4k resolution on a 24” may be overkill at that monitor size. But is probably most bang you will get for your buck if it even existed.

your build is going to be perfect for 240hz 1440p.

I use a weaker build for 1440p 240hz. Yours seems perfect for it.

Personally id keep the 1440. Gotta think about the future, games are only going to get better making them harder to run. Id bet in 3 minimum years the 7900xtx will start showing its age slightly at 1440 but especially at 4k
Shit even a 4090 (my friend owns one) struggles on some modern AAA games with max settings at 4k (Alan wake, Black myth, Stalker2, Etc) That 7900xtx is no where near a 4090 Staying at 1440 gives u a couple more years, run at higher refresh rate. but at the end of the Ig its depends what games u play. If its strictly solo games that arent new AAA than the 7900xtx will be fine at 4k, just think abt that future proofing aspect. If you prefer fast paced games (cod, val, apex) id say 1440 with high refresh rate
