Can I file an insurance claim without police report?

I recently had an accident where I hit a stop sign post, which also caused damage to my car's transmission. I had no intention of leaving the scene, as the stop sign post belongs to the village. My friend, who recently moved into the area, said she would inquire with a neighbor about who to contact regarding the damaged post. At the time, I believed my insurance wouldn't cover this type of damage, and a friend's friend advised me that reporting the post wasn’t necessary.
However, I later discovered that my insurance does cover my car’s repair, though with a deductible. Can I still report the incident to my insurance even though I don’t have a police report or any formal documentation about the accident?

My son totally wrecked his truck. Took out a hydrant. Insurance covered his truck and the hydrant. We didn't submit a police report.

Thank you for your reply. How were they able to fix the hydrant? Did you have to report it to the local government office?

They, insurance, didn't fix anything. They just paid the repair bill from the local city government. A hydrant is quite different from a street sign.... lots of water involved.
