Mobo swapping old Optiplex with new Optiplex board

Hello! I have an older Optiplex 5050 with an 7th gen CPU I used as a router and now I’m replacing it with a 10th gen Optiplex 3080. I want to give this PC to my parents, but it isn’t much better than the computer that they have now which already is too slow for them. I can pick up a new SFF Plus mobo for around 40 dollars, which is LGA1700. If I did this I could get them a plethora of used processors for cheap that would last for years. I don’t mind cutting away on the io up front or in the back to make that fit, I just want to make sure that all the power cables and standoffs will be the same. It’s my understanding that while the Optiplex motherboard is proprietary, it’s still the same shape every year? I don’t know much about the newer SFF Plus motherboards though.

The motherboard and CPU are the most expensive parts. If you are going to replace them, just build a completely new build, it is not worth throwing away your money at more proprietary parts that you won't be able to upgrade. You don't need to buy new parts but buy standard used parts like an atx PSU, case and motherboard.

That’s the thing, these Optiplex computers are cheap. My 7500 cost me 50 dollars for a complete system. A brand new sff plus motherboard is 42 dollars. 12th gen lga1700 doesn’t have degradation issues, neither does the non-k 13th and 14th gen CPU’s that would go in this Optiplex as the TDP is so much lower. Even if I was to buy a 14900k with degradation, it wouldn’t matter much as I have to turn down the TDP so much that it wouldn’t hit it’s boost clocks to really stress the CPU. I already have the proprietary computers, I really just want to make sure the proprietary parts are the same before wasting 40 dollars on a motherboard I can’t connect.
