Up to 85C when gaming
Proof_Working_1800@reddit
Wait is 70°c considered hot? I know mine goes up to 78°c under heavy load but she idles at sub 47°c on a hot day but then again im using an open air design for my set up
mrYo5o@reddit (OP)
im getting 70c at just browsing with only 3 chrome tabs open before
Proof_Working_1800@reddit
Chrome uses more resources than a lot of people think
mrYo5o@reddit (OP)
been a month now and thank you all for your responses, i was using the stock cooler from my old pc, turns out it can't keep my cpu cool so i bought a new cooler (Deepcool AK620) i'm on 45c while browse and up to 70c while gaming
RChamy@reddit
Sounds like my 5800x3D stock running a corsair 240mm aio
Skepsis93@reddit
Does the 5800x3D run that much hotter than a 5700x3D? Because my 5700x3D sits around 35C idle and 40-45C just browsing, noctua NH-U14S cooler.
My 3600 in my mini-ITX case with terrible airflow sitting in a cabinet runs at 60-70 usually.
EirHc@reddit
I got a remote desktop open and google chrome and I'm at 37°C right now.
Emotional-Way3132@reddit
Do you live in Antarctica? My 7800x3D with Thermalight PS120 EVO idles at 48-50c and the idle power consumption is 30-40watts
JeffTek@reddit
Yeah my 7600x3d idles around 47-50c, but I think I can shave off a few degrees. The paste that came with my cooler was petty dry and clumpy, but I found my arctic silver the other day so I plan to repaste it soon to see.
EirHc@reddit
Ya that seems kinda high to me, not sure why you guys have such high temps. I got the MX-6 paste, so that maybe helps a little. I also like to spread my paste all over the surface of the lid with the plastic spreading tool so contact area is maximized and there's no missed spots. I know a lot of tutorials recommend just doing an X or whatever, but that seems to me like you're less likely to get optimal spread... and I've just always done it this way for like nearly 30 years, so I'm basically an old geezer stuck in my ways at this point.
I guess otherwise I'm not afraid to tighten the cooler down really well against the cpu. I want that cooler pressed nice and tight against the chip. Obviously you don't wanna reef on it so hard you'll strip a screw or snap something, but if there was a torque setting they recommended, I'm probably going harder than that - eheh.
Anyhoo, I also wasn't playing any games right before checking my temps. My CPU utilization was at like 1%. And I don't have a 4090 or 7900 xtx cooking in my case either... just a slightly more modest 4070 ti super.
Emotional-Way3132@reddit
Honestly you either live in a location with 0-10c ambient temps to get that temperatures with your 7800X3D or you're using a 280-360mm AIO
My room temp is 20-25c and my 7600x3d idles around 47-50c
EirHc@reddit
Sorry to disappoint, but no.
Ambient temp a very controlled 19-20C, with a Deepcool AK620 air cooler. Here's a picture from December 19th, 2023 when I first mounted the CPU confirming it is indeed a 7800x3D.
I'm not home right now, so I can't snap a picture of the house and CPU temps, but if you're really that skeptical I will. I checked my CPU temp with HWiNFO. I dunno if it makes a difference, but I'm also running Windows 11, I keep my computer very clean, so if I don't need a background process running, I disable it.
Emotional-Way3132@reddit
pics of the idle CPU temps and idle power before I believe you
JeffTek@reddit
Honestly I've been building around 20 years now and I've always done the spread method, but this time is the first time I didn't because of LTT and Jay and all those guys telling me not to. When I repaste I'm spreading that shit lol. I can't remember the name but I'm using one of the new gen Thermalright coolers with a fat single tower and a push/pull double fan. It's no peerless assassin but still I expect better idles than 50c.
EirHc@reddit
I live close enough to the Arctic circle that I have to travel into it for work sometimes...
But I keep the ambient air pretty normal room temperature all the time. 20 degrees C, maybe down to 19 or 18.5 at night for when I'm sleeping. Maybe on the cooler side compared to some people, but nothing crazy.
Otherwise I spent a little extra to buy premium thermal paste. Arctic Cooling MX-6, it's probably not even the best, but maybe a little better than what came stock with the cooler. And my case fans are stock. I think 2 on the front 1 on the back.
GhostAI_@reddit
Have you done any undervolt or negative offset? I never saw those temps even in idle for my 7800X3D.
EirHc@reddit
Naw, nothing fancy, just default settings really aside from enabling expo for my DDR5 6000 ram.
GhostAI_@reddit
Nice. My ambient is like 7-10 degrees more.
EirHc@reddit
Oof, where do you live? I'd be dying.
RChamy@reddit
Its a 105w tdp vs 65w tdp chip. Its a 5800x3d with an "eco" PBO profile built in. You can tweak PBO values to make it like a 5700x3d or better if you wish, those chips are golden.
Skepsis93@reddit
5800x3D and 5700x3D are both 105 TDP
RChamy@reddit
Whoooops
doppido@reddit
I have a 5800x3d with a 360 aio and run 45-50 while gaming and 28-30 browsing. Was about 70-80 while gaming with a crappy air cooler beforehand

No dont tell me u forgot to take the plastic sticker off ur cooler
Plastic-Camp3619@reddit
Only reason I remembered was from getting bored and watching an installation tutorial before doing it myself and bloke forgot to take off the plastic lol
Hzx21@reddit
Lol bro i dont know how people actually forget about it like is it because ur so excited or what
adultfemalefetish@reddit
Sometimes you just get in the zone and go through the motions and still make careless mistakes.
Recently I had heating issues on a new cpu+mobo and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Turns out my dumbass had used the wrong standoffs. Swapped em to the right ones and it solved the issue. I've been building PCs for 12 years and if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.
Hzx21@reddit
I think its the ego as oh i have been building for so long i know the right ones and u put the wrong ones if u build a lot than i think yeah u might miss it but if its ur first pc i think it happens less especially if u do a lot of research
adultfemalefetish@reddit
Lmao if it was ego I wouldn't admit that I made a silly mistake. I'm also in the trades and stupid mistakes happen even on things you've done a thousand times. You just laugh at yourself, fix it, and move on.
ThatOnePerson@reddit
I did it once when I was building 3 or 4 computers back to back.
It was the 2nd last one I forgot on. Remembered as I was taking the sticker off the last one.
Plastic-Camp3619@reddit
Just forget about it 🤷♂️ sometimes it’s clear piece and if you dunno what you’re doing baddabim baddabum.
Hzx21@reddit
Pretty sure most of them come with like red writing and a piece sticking out so u can see it and pull it
Plastic-Camp3619@reddit
People might not realise oh lord of the plastic wrapping
thatissomeBS@reddit
70C was normal for me until a year later I pulled the cooler off and realized that I forgot to take the plastic sticker off the cooler.
OP, check this before anything else.
Hzx21@reddit
Hope he actually sees if its still on the cooler and i think that he didn't even build the pc he bought a pre built or something like 90c is known as high
maxxxminecraft111@reddit
Normal PC? No.
MacBook Pro? Yeah that's Apple for you.
UngodlyPain@reddit
Not normal. When browsing it should maybe be like 10c above your ambient temp. So like 28-35C is more what I'd call normal.
Load temps vary a lot... But idle or just browsing low use scenarios. Even in hotter than normal environments I'd consider 40, or especially 45C to be a sign something is wrong
iClone101@reddit
It's hard to say with the information we have here.
Is it a laptop? If so, those temps are perfectly normal.
Are you using a high-end CPU with a stock/cheap cooler? If so, those temps seem a bit high but not insane.
Do you have a good aftermarket cooler? If you do, then you've probably done something wrong.
XxMaDDoG2020xX@reddit
Depends your pc could be updating in the background or using heavy tasking service is why cpu is heating like That.
the_Athereon@reddit
OP... You haven't replied to a single comment on this thread.
So I'll ask again.
WHAT CPU?
actionjmanx@reddit
What CPU are you running?
Pot_Of_Beans_@reddit
That's hot for just browsing. Anyone telling you that's normal probably has an overheating CPU. Your should be in the 29 to 40 range, not 70-75 range
tech-jef@reddit
Depends on CPU.
daCampa@reddit
If they're in a hot country with no AC, it's not unthinkable, even if it isn't optimal
Huntrawrd@reddit
Much too hot.
curt725@reddit
35C on my 5900X with a deep rock pro 4 air cooler.
tech-jef@reddit
Dang - my 5900x is way hotter than that with CORSAIR H100i AIO.

Ain’t you worried about the humidity? I’d be constantly stressed about that.
curt725@reddit
Nah dehumidifier down here. It’s surprisingly dry even during the summer.
Paul7991@reddit
Stalker 2 on Epic isn't taking me over 68 degrees, using Thermalright Burst assassin (1fan, 1radiator). Probably thermal paste is poorly applied, poor quality, or has gotten old. Change it, or change cpu cooler, and it will likely be fixed
Locksmith_Taster@reddit
Specs, now. That isn't goddamn normal.
_Rusty_Axe@reddit
My AMD 7700x "just browsing" is between 40 and 45c, with a Thermalright Peerless Assassin. Fans are inaudible at that temp.
Not sure what your setup is, but that is kind of warm.
I used to get that kind of temp all the time with my old system, an AMD-FX6200 with the stock cooler. Replaced that with a $20 single-tower 120mm Thermaltake Contac Silent 12 and the temps dropped dramatically (later replaced the whole system).
Sounds like you need a better cooler. Doesn't have to be expensive to work.
CanderousXOrdo@reddit
How that cooler working out for u? Ive been meaning to get a new pc and ive been looking at good CPU cooler.
CaptainMGN@reddit
Can recommend that exact cooler as well. It's hard to beat at its price point really. It's definitely audible under full load but that's about it. Cools well, pretty silent otherwise and looks good too
_Rusty_Axe@reddit
It's been great so far. Keeps the CPU cool and runs pretty quiet for most things. Running a CPU Stress Test will get the CPU up to about 92c at 100% CPU fan speed, which is still below the 95c throttle temp. And the noise is not excessive even then.
randomguy51@reddit
Have you setup a custom fan curve? I have a 5800x with an NH-D15 and it makes a low but still audible amount of noise when browsing, and when gaming it’s quite loud. Temps are normalish tho around 45c browsing and low 70s gaming
_Rusty_Axe@reddit
I did set up a custom fan curve in the BIOS, for the CPU fans and for the case fans. I also have a custom curve set up for the GPU in AMD Adrenaline. I start hearing them when CPU ramps above 55c, 75c is when I really notice it.
GPU fans (2-fan Radeon RX 6750XT) will make more noise than the CPU and case fans when I start gaming with it.
Right this moment, 42c while typing this, CPU fan is 720 RPM and exhaust fan is 1100 RPM.
Testing with the game Skyrim, it pegged to about 75c briefly while opening the game, but once in it, is running a steady 55c with a quiet but noticeable fan noise, if you stop and listen for it.
I don't really need dead silent - it's a full sized case with good airflow, 3x 120mm front intake, 1x 120mm rear exhaust, mesh top (where I could mount 3 more fans if I wanted to) and sits off to the side of my desk.
Slay3r131@reddit
Same for me, 7700 non X stock cooler, he has some problems there
Antenoralol@reddit
My 5800X3D doesn't even get that hot while gaming at 4K on MMO's (which are CPU heavy titles)
70C while just browsing the internet is bad.
skyfishgoo@reddit
not really... sitting at 36 right now browsing reddit.
EscapeFacebook@reddit
Unless it's a laptop, no.
Jonroi14@reddit
I had the same situation a couple of months ago and what fix it for me was re-enabling fast boot. I have 5600x with 240 aio from corsair(I regret buying it).
Everytime I turn on my pc with fast boot off, temps got hotter and hotter(light browsing and under load) until i restart my pc. Restarting with those temps, for me, on boot would give me cpu overheating warning.
The last time I had those temps, I restarted my pc(with cpu overheat warning on restart) then turned on fast boot, today my idle/lightbrowsing is 35°C, gaming 60°C
Saurusftw@reddit
If its Intel you should try disabling both turbo settings in bios. 3 if you include the genie I guess.
Soft_Championship814@reddit
I thought mine was hot, idle is 30/32c and while browsing is 36/38c or when doing something more demanding it's stabilizing at 45-50c and while gaming in some intense titles is at 56c after 30-40 minutes.
The cpu is 14700 stock + aio 240mm from Corsair. When I go in performance mode and it stays at 5.3ghz all the time I hit while I game, idk something like 60c+.
The weird thing for my cpu is when it ramps up quickly to 76/78c only sometimes and then it's stabilizing very fast down to 45/50c that's the weird thing and then the temps are staying there almost locked in that zone.
But for you for sure that temperature is not okay at all. You need a better cooler or reapply the thermal paste, adjust something and then go benchmarking again to see the results and one more thing check the airflow and fans.
Islaytomuch1@reddit
Depends on the processor. 7900x3d and your borderline. An Intel CPU or AMD non 3d has higher limits.
Mine idols at 46-49 and hit 65- 77 in games. Path of exile really cranks the CPU lol.
Wiggles114@reddit
Which CPU, cooler and case? What's the ambient temperature in the room?
randomguy51@reddit
Have you setup a custom fan curve? I have a 5800x with an NH-D15 and it makes a low but still audible amount of noise when browsing, and when gaming it’s quite loud. Temps are normalish tho around 45c browsing and low 70s gaming
ToThePillory@reddit
Could be, depends on the processor.
YouOnly-LiveOnce@reddit
I like how there's like 80 comments and no response from op and no additional info lol
mitios7@reddit
It’s relatively hot, not dangerous, but not normal for most CPUs
RozhiOnce@reddit
not normal
Icy-Extension5567@reddit
You can replace the water-cooled CPU fan
AbsolutZeroGI@reddit
Depends.
These days CPUs get a lot warmer than they used to, at least spiking. Plus, websites run absurd numbers of trackers and ads, plus infinite scroll, etc etc.
It is perfectly possible to get temps up to 70C in a spike, but not sustained.
If it's a 70C spike, you're fine. If it's sustained 70C, then I'd probably remove the cooler and check the thermal paste application (or check for the plastic).
Also, if you have a strong CPU and cheaped out on the cooler, it could be caused by an underpowered cooler.
But, if it's sustained 70C while browsing, my money is on a subpar thermal paste application or forgetting to remove the plastic sticker from the cooler.
Zerlaz@reddit
85 when gaming seems good. Maybe the guy just uses a superior fan curve. Isn't cooling below 70 foolish?
Potential_Appeal_546@reddit
Totally normal. If you live in hell.
DepressedCunt5506@reddit
25° for my 14700k. Check the cooler mounting pressure or the paste? Or get a better cooler? Idk really. Just take it apart first.
Skepsis93@reddit
That's room temp, you sure your PC is on?
nicholsml@reddit
It's weird that people try to flex on CPU idle temps. Dude, your CPU doesn't idle at room temperature and we know you are lying, lol. It's also a douchey move to try and convince a new user that temp is normal idle temp.
tombstoneshadow@reddit
Seems hot, but will depend on CPU and cooling
h0neyfish@reddit
Agreed it is hotter than should be. I'd say something with the CPU, cooling, or possible malware keeping processes higher than they should be.
SkyMasterARC@reddit
My laptop CPU hovers around 55 - 60c just browsing or watching videos. 70 for a desktop under light load is too high. Take off your CPU cooler and see if everything's making good contact. Even without case fans a properly installed CPU cooler should keeps temps below 60c just browsing.
Arlcas@reddit
If you're somewhere with 30°C ambient temp and no AC, then yeah, sounds normal. If not, then check your cooling solution. You might have a cooler mounting issue, dry paste, or something like that.
Useful_Emphasis_8402@reddit
TLDR idle temps never matter, under load temps do. 85c under load is normal.
Anyone who tells you no is wrong, simply on the fact that theres not enough information. IDLE TEMPS DO NOT MATTER. Only the temperature of your cpu under load matters. For example, my cpu runs hot. It runs 70c idle, 60c in bios. It runs 75c-78c under load. Sometimes 80c on a cpu intensive task. 80c is a perfectly fine and normal under load temperature. So is 85c. Anything over 90c and then you have a problem.
Anyone who tells you 85c under load is bad doesn't know what they are talking about. If you think that your cpu should be running at a lower temp, or you want it to run at a lower temp, upgrade your cooler, get better airflow, buy some premium toothpaste.
WhyYouSoMad4@reddit
No. What cpu? Make sure you took the plastic covering protective film off the copper plate side of your cpu cooler. Make sure there are no Hotspot on the cpu, take the cooler off and reapply paste, and look at the pattern of original paste and see if it covered the whole cpu surface area. My cpu(7800x3d) hasn't hit above 62 under full game load.
xabrol@reddit
Depends on the cpu. New Am5s like the 7950x run hot 60+c is normal.
No_Guarantee7841@reddit
The important part is what are your temps in bios and what are your ambient temps.
Natural-You4322@reddit
Sure, if It is a laptop with ambient temp in the 40s
savorymilkman@reddit
Not unless youre watching YouTube with an ad blocker
Traditional_Can6982@reddit
My stock cooler hit 85 to 90c while gaming on my 13400f. Got a deepcool Ag400 and its now never going over 70c
Sage_8888@reddit
On Laptop? Yes, it's perfectly normal to have even 90-93 C while gaming. While browsing, try to switch to silent mode, because cpu spikes from low frequency to max when you load the new page or watch YouTube.
On PC? Hell fucking no, it's not normal
Taskr36@reddit
No, but it may depend on the CPU. I've seen people with some Intel CPUs insisting that it's just fine since the CPU is rated up to 110. Personally, I'd check to make sure the plastic wasn't left on and repaste it with some Noctua NT-H2.
Xyz3r@reddit
Well, it depends. 7700x with any decent cooler? Not normal.
I run a 7950x with a thermalright peerless assassin. For that setup, those numbers are to be expected in the default setup. Probably even worse as the cpu will hit its temp limit and stay there.
However, 85c shouldnt be an issue. It’s mostly about having your PC run quiet, so if it doesn’t annoy you you’ll be fine. Just make sure you did take of the sticker on your coolers base.
kNIGHTSFALLN@reddit
Mine is 54 on a 5950x and 74ish on gaming

docmontyg@reddit
my gpu would overheat when doing multiple 4k transcodes and hand it back over to the cpu. fixed it with a dedicated fan thru my nvidia gpu... seems bulletproof transcoding now.
Acrobatic-Count-9394@reddit
Nope. 30-50 is normal for idle.
I would guess that 85C is your CPU critical temp, and it throtles down instead of heating above that point.
TimmmyTurner@reddit
not nornal.
