Are there any decent cross-country skiing destinations in the UK?

I’m from Alaska and I’m thinking about going to graduate school in the UK. Cross-country skiing is my favorite hobby and I’d love to know about the cross-country skiing community in the UK and the best ski trails. Thank you!

XC on trails (lightweight plastic skis) is not really a thing in the UK, which is why some of the other responses sound odd as they probably haven't heard of it. There are only two trail areas I'm aware of, both in the Scottish Highlands and not readily accessible without a car. Due to the infrequency and unpredictability of snow here, they are not usable all winter. Some XC skiers roller ski when there's no snow. There are groups you can google - be aware the standards vary widely. Serious XCers holiday in Norway, which is well set up for XC.
Nordic skiing on Nordic touring skis is of course possible almost anywhere as long as there's snow. There are many suitable Scottish Highland areas, little elsewhere unless you're lucky with the snow. The weather is the main obstacle, as often when there's good snow cover, there is also snowfall and winds. For safety reasons this is something I would only do in a group even on the rare crisp sunny day.

Great info, thank you!

Torridon in the northwest, a bit more remote but offers a stunning landscape for skiing

Wow, yeah, it looks beautiful there

As others have said, NE Scotland is about the only place where you can Nordic ski with any regularity.
On the plus side it’s easy to get to a number of countries with more reliable snow. You could go from a UK airport to, say, the Vasaloppet start line within a few hours. I’ve done cross-country a few times in the Alps and Scandinavia, flying out of London Gatwick

no, not really; depending on where you end up in the UK it will probably be quicker to head to the alps or Scandinavia for proper snow and XC skiing.
We live in the SE and will drive to the alps.

Plenty of skiers here in the UK, but we fly to the alps rather than going up to Scotland.
ASY_Freddy@reddit
as quick to drive to the alps in the SE than Scotland

I could be wrong but I suspect the only places with the level of snow required would be up in the Highlands of Scotland. Parts of Wales and places like the peak district probably get enough snow but I had a quick look and found this
https://www.snowsportengland.org.uk/get-involved/nordic/ they do roller skiing in non snowy places

So basically Scotland is your best bet

No problem we aren't gonna be able to compete with alaska on snow but on the plus side we have less bears
dth300@reddit
There’s one near me. Fortunately he’ll leave you be, as long as you’re not carrying hunny
ahoneybadger3@reddit
Not all certain on that. Doesn't Brighton have the most bears per capita in the world?
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
Ha ha ha good 1 but I suspect San Francisco beats Brighton
bizstring@reddit
No chance the Peak District gets enough snow to do cross country skiing
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
I mean I reckon snake pass would be interesting tho I'm not sure if that would be more downhill skiing or just pure insanity.

You’ve done literally zero research on this, haven’t you

See this previous thread.
The chances of being able to ski on real snow in the UK are not great.
But the Alps aren't too far away.
