I think I've got some unopened metal type tapes somewhere.
I picked up a high end Sony 80's stack system 2nd hand back in the early 90's & it opened up a world of different tape types.
Being able to control the recording volume maximised tape capacity & reduced hiss. My recordings had never sounded so good!.
Tazz_Lover1970@reddit
Still have some with excellent playlists

Can't even buy a decent phone with a micro slot anymore, can we?
4l0N3D@reddit
I thought the SIM tray has a slot for one?
I've not used it with this device but my last one I did.

I went through a phase in high school where I wanted to be an architect and had developed totally pretentious handwriting. I wound up being the go-to scribe writing so many of those covers!!
bgroins@reddit
Hashtags on Reddit? But why?
ScorpiosDaughter@reddit
Is it live or is it memorex?
CupidStunt13@reddit
I still have a mini-suitcase of concert tapes I picked up years ago. I just need to see if my old Walkman will hold a charge...
mrekted@reddit
Holds a charge?
You means holds some fresh AA batteries?
CupidStunt13@reddit
Mine isn't the above early ones, it's one of the late model ones from the 90s with the chewing gum-style rechargeable battery stick. Used to have a single AA battery extension but I don't have it any more.
Whiskey_River_73@reddit
Rechargeable Walkman? That's deluxe!
pissedoffjester@reddit
In 96 or 97 I left my car unlocked and someone stole my box of tapes. Most of which were painstakingly created mixtapes on Maxell and to this day when I think about I get angry. Take the radio leave me my tapes man.
Whiskey_River_73@reddit
My greatest joy for awhile was my 1989 vintage Technics component system that had tape to tape cueing. 'Twas the cat's ass. Still have it. The CD player component was basically a novelty until I had a CD player in my next vehicle, then I of course had to buy loads of CDs.
One of the greatest gifts you could get or give was a mixtape, to or from a dude in your group, or a girlfriend or someone you wanted to be a girlfriend. This because it was a personal thing, and thought and time went into it.
ShitShowcase@reddit
Chrome is much better, you know.
RAWR_Orree@reddit
I used to copy all the vinyl I bought and could usually get two albums per tape. This was my go-to brand and type.
Sometimes I'd splurge and get metal, but chrome was fine, tbh. I still have an unopened blank metal cassette from the 80s.
opservator67@reddit
Maxell and #TDK were my faves
Whiskey_River_73@reddit
There's a Playboy ad if I've ever seen one. đ
HHSquad@reddit
My favorites as well....not a big fan of Memorex
Shen1076@reddit
This picture is what immediately came to mind

^ Totally!
Whiskey_River_73@reddit
I still have a good stack of new blank cassette tapes, blank vhs tapes, stacks of blank CDs, DVDs, and double DVDs. Now, even USB drives and SD cards that I'm probably never going to use. Always being prepared and chasing the curve of what's current, always having to chase and update tech.
Respond-Leather@reddit
An LP record was usually 45 minutes (each side was about 22:30), so you could tape an LP on to each side of a 90 minute Maxell or TDK.
I told my kids that is why cassettes were sold in 90 minutes, more commonly than 60 or 120 minutes, and they accepted it as fact, so it's true now
GimmeCat47@reddit
I never knew these were âepitaxialâ cassettes.
Now I have to google that.
Soxogram@reddit
Then there was the Maxell UD-XLII
discussatron@reddit
TDK fo life, yo.
TheGirlwThePinkHair@reddit
I def still have unopened cassettes in the closet. Who knew the last time I made a mix tape was the last time. What a downer
WangDoodleTrifecta@reddit
I used to buy those in the three pack.
acutomanzia@reddit (OP)
I spent a lot of money on mix tapes for girls. If you got the good tapes, I liked you.
WangDoodleTrifecta@reddit
Always got the good tapes. It was for the ladies
Maleficent_Egg_6053@reddit
Fucking lol⌠Same here!
zomphlotz@reddit
I still have at least 100 recorded XLII-S tapes. And probably 20 NOS still in the packaging.
Ignignokt73@reddit
I enjoyed Maxells not only for their sound and durability, but also the rewards. Mail in like 20 of the proofs of purchase and write in a CD you want and theyâd send it. I got at least 3-4 CDs this way.
acutomanzia@reddit (OP)
I bought so many tapes that I got The Legendary Pinks Dots - The Golden Age from them. Thanks Maxell!
Ignignokt73@reddit
Nice! I used the free cd rewards to replace cassettes I wore out. I only recall The Art of Noise - In Visible Silence, and maybe U2 Joshua Tree?
TiminatorFL@reddit
I loved peeling the plastic wrap off those things. So satisfying.
VanceAstrooooooovic@reddit
Golds are premium
HHSquad@reddit
That particular tape was my go to.
Maleficent_Egg_6053@reddit
My tape of choice⌠Until⌠They came out with the XLII-S....whoaaaaa!

Any other brand was junkâŚ.tdk? Still have 30-40 shows that sound awesome.
solomons-marbles@reddit
Dude if youâre listening to 30+ year old cassettes, they donât sound as good as you think do.
JeelyPiece@reddit
Fancy! Are you making a demotape on your tascam?!
acutomanzia@reddit (OP)
Nope. Still rocking the Denon.
JeelyPiece@reddit
Neat!
Mobile_Aioli_6252@reddit
Those were the shit back in day! All I could afford were the cheap TDK's
Lorelai_72@reddit
Those were good ones. Very good recordings. And they lasted longer.
geddylee1@reddit
Soooo many Dead shows
Kimber80@reddit
Great tape!
bigSTUdazz@reddit
The joy of recording some sweet Shalimar and snapping the tabs to keep it...only to have your cock brother but tape over it to dub a warbley 65% of Master of Puppets. What an asshole.
I was that asshole. My kid sister hated me back then...probably for good reason.
Puzzled-Fix-8838@reddit
Sure, but "TDK does amazing things to your system!"
bigSTUdazz@reddit
Maxell were mid...now MEMOREX...
Is it live?
MrFutzy@reddit
I thought I was all fancy-n-shit getting the XLII-S 100's.
Do you remember when making a mixed tape took... days... weeks... (I got tired just remembering).
Agreeable-Can-7841@reddit

High Bias!
JET304@reddit
Anybody else hearing Ride of the Valkyries?
Leftstrat@reddit
I loved the Maxell and TDK tapes for bouncing just a bit over the 0db barrier... The Maxells always seemed to have a tougher tape housing than TDK's... I recently pulled a couple of tapes out I'd made during the early 80's.. (Maxell and TDK), and it seemed that the 40 year old TDK tapes had the brighter sound, but the Maxell tapes sounded a bit muddy/reduced. and yes, I did use the Cr02 and Dolby B+C switches on the tape deck (JVC) originally. :)
veteran_grognard@reddit
TDK Super Avilyn

I still don't know what "epitaxial" means, but it must have been important.
palmveach1972@reddit
They sell good on eBay. If they are still sealed
gloriosky_zero@reddit
The good stuff
emmsmum@reddit
That was the good stuff!!
