Upgrade advice 3600x with 980ti

Currently running a 3600x with a stock cooler paired with a 980ti but looking to upgrade within the next couple of months. Right now for budget I’m thinking around $250 maybe just getting a 6650xt, so I was wondering if that’s even worth it or if it would make more sense to just wait longer and save up for a new cpu + gpu like a 5700x paired with a 7700xt. Trying to use as much of my current build as possible, so not trying to stay on am4 for the foreseeable future. Thanks!

Your PC is mostly fine, It will show some bottlenecks but that would not be too bad. Start by getting a new GPU, GTX 980Ti at this point is too old for the performance it delivers and it takes too much of power to do so. RX 7600 seems good for your budget but if you can push for a RX7700XT for around $389, that would good.
After GPU upgrade you can start saving for an upgrade to 5700X3D.

Love this plan, I was definitely looking for an upgrade over time plan so this would be perfect.
Any particular reason a 7600 over a 6650xt

7600 performs same except it's newer with more features like AV1 encoding and few other 7000 series exclusive feature and it cost same so why not haha

Got it thanks. Do you think a 7600 will over a noticeable performance boost compared to my 980ti?
Chopper1911@reddit
Yes It's twice the performance of a 980Ti! RX 7600 is even faster than GTX 1080Ti

How about the difference from 7600 to a 7700x, would it even make sense to wait and just save up for that?
Chopper1911@reddit
Its around \~30% faster than 7600 but it comes with 12GB VRAM aswell vs 8GB. If you plan to upgrade to 1440p you should at least try to get 12GB VRAM if you want to play latest AAA games.
For Esports title more VRAM makes no difference, assuming we are talking about 8GB+ VRAM GPUs.

Awesome thank you so much

for excact comparision between GPUs I would watch reputed YT channels like Hardware Unboxed or Gamer Nexus. To get a pretty good idea of generally how good GPUs compare to each other, techpowerup is an awesome website.

If ure open to used hardware try to grab a RX 6700 xt, they usually sell for like 200$/€ and it's a pretty big upgrade for you and will also last you again for a bit if you plan on playing on 1080P.
CPU wise you could technically still stay on the 3600x but if you have the money I'd 100% switch to the 5700x3d, Zen3 is imo much better than Zen2 in basically everything, but if you don't have the budget then thats fine too.

Why a 5700x3d over a 5700x? Is the performance difference noticeable?

What resolution, target frame rate and types of games?

Right now playing at 1080p, mostly cs2 right now but definitely going to pick up some more games in the future, right now looking at dayz and the new cod. Pretty new to pc, recently made the change from mac so don’t know too much about target frame rates or anything, just looking to improve my experience.

Okay is your PC 144Hz?
For good constant FPS in CS2 a 5700x3d is probably a very good idea, but i still need the info on your RAM

My monitor right now is only 60hz but looking to upgrade that too ofc
For ram right now I’m rocking a 2x8 3200 kit but probably gonna double up whenever I can
