The roller rink is still alive!! And I still can skate, like riding a bike….who remembers and who still has one around where you live??

This was a staple of my childhood. School roller skating parties were THE place to be in the late 80s-early 90s. My sons had one tonight and surprisingly it was very well attended. I threw on some skates myself and cruised around a bit. I haven’t skated in probably 25-30 years, well I’ve ice skated…..but it came back quickly. The limbo is still a thing, “wipeout” (a version of Simon Says) was new to me. No snowball (where guys and girls separate and pick who they like to skate with), but that’s probably for the best. Always seemed like someone got left out and was sad. It was fun to take a trip down memory lane tonight, and the boys liked it enough to want to go back. Glad we have this still going here in Indy!

There isn’t one where I live now, but the one near my parents house is still there.

I loved the roller rink as a kid! Unfortunately, I attempted to be a sporty cool rollerblade girl in the 90s, very very briefly. I hit a rock five minutes into my first outdoor attempt to skate on them and I sprained my ankle so bad that the doctor said it would have been better for me if it was a clean break instead. So now my ankle isn't strong enough to skate and I get the bonus of having it randomly start to ache out of nowhere.

They literally closed my childhood one one a few weeks ago, I didn’t know so I wasn’t able to go one last time, but so many memories, Friday nights at age 12 or 13, it was the place to be, the locker room was the make out spot, so many good memories

I broke my elbow when I was five. I fell once on the skating rink and I was done. I've been careful not to do things where I could break more bones.

We have one 15 minutes away. Went for nieces Birthday and forgot how much I loved skating!! Def more of a workout then was as a kid.

Worked at Skating Plus in Ventura, CA when I was in high school. Started in Skate Rental and quickly became a floor guard and DJ. Loved that job and all the delicious high school drama that came with it.
The establishment is still there and I still go from time to time.

I can’t skate but that’s because I got fat and my center of gravity is off from what it was 30 years ago
polythenesammie@reddit
I found this out about myself when I took my kids to the roller rink. After hyping it up and telling them how fun it was and how i was actually good at it, I fell straight on my ass. Multiple times. Took a bit to figure out how to skate with all the extra junk I'm packing in my trunk and under the hood these days.
Dragonfly-Adventurer@reddit
Hey don't sell yourself short you might have a disc or two just about ready to burst as well. Won't know until you fall on your fat ass a couple times ;)
odin_the_wiggler@reddit
Only one way to fix that. Time to skate!
Thatdewd57@reddit
I be balling on the rink. Haven’t been in a bit though.
jojocookiedough@reddit
We have one 40 min away that's pretty crummy and not worth the gas money lol
90min away is a really nice one though. We make the drive out to that one every couple of months. They have a drop-in class for the kids in the morning and directly after is a couple hours of kids skate session, which if you do the class ($15) they include the skate session for free. They have a snack bar and pizza kitchen, makes for a fun family day. I got hooked again and got myself a pair of blades so I can skate with them.

I still have fond memories of all of those roller rink jams.

I used to go to the skating rink mentioned in this article. Even though the high school changed the name of their mascot in 1981, I remember going to the chxxx Rink in 3rd grade (1985).

We still have 2 that I know of in my city. Went to both with my wife and daughter recently, and we had a blast! I somehow managed to not fall despite not having been in skates in over 20 years, hehe.

The one I went to as a kid got torn down 10 years ago

There’s one in the next suburb up from us that I used to go to as a kid. Went there with one of my kids recently and it smells exactly the same. Everything is exactly the same.
momofwon@reddit
There’s a fun one near us but I broke my wrist there as a grown ass adult so I don’t acknowledge its existence.
lecoqmako@reddit
I’m sorry; broken bones are no joke. I went a few years ago for the first time in twenty years, muscle memory kicked in and I was having so much fun I got overconfident and tore my ACL shooting the duck.

Skating is still very popular in Atlanta. It’s cultural in a way. My husband and I still go occasionally but we avoid teen night and weekends since that’s when the crowds are.

Grand Rapids, Michigan here, I went to one in town a few years ago with my partner at the time. I tried roller skates first, but I couldn't do well. I switched out for rollerblades and had an amazing time! I used to play street hockey a lot so those were definitely like riding a bike! :)

I grew up with a roller rink less than a 5 minute walk to my house. My brothers and I were always there, so I was a really fast skater by the 2nd grade. Our school had a field trip there and they did a skating race for each grade level. I beat everyone in my grade by so much they said it wasn't fair and made me race against the third graders. I got 2nd place behind my older brother. I was pissed.

I went a couple years ago and ate it so hard but was laughing the whole time.

There’s one nearby (relatively, as everything is far away here) and I really, really want to go.

I skate more now than I ever did as as kid or teenager…. 2-3x a week and make almost everyone drop jaws. I started taking lessons with my son 11ish years ago. Great exercise and therapeutic AF when you can let it ride with the music.

Mine was Skating Plus… I didn’t go too often but when I did it was fun!

I loved roller skating! I was talking to a friend a bit ago about how much I miss it, and she told me, "You know, [mutual friend] was a roller skating champion back in the day?"

No rinks in my area, sadly.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
There’s one in my town, but it’s been a long time since it was alive.
capthazelwoodsflask@reddit
We have one near us that my 7 year old loves. It also has a climbing structure, bumper cars, an arcade, and laser tag.
I end up in pain for a few days afterwards, but rollerskating is still a lot of fun. Their laser tag arena is pretty cool, too.

Planning on taking my kids for the first time this weekend actually. My daughter got roller skates for her birthday.
DisastrousFlower@reddit
so many hours spent at the rink! now it’s a gym.
singleguy79@reddit
I couldn't skate even then. Hugged the outer railing all the way around.

One of my first punk shows was at our roller rink. It was GWAR, and they flooded it with fake blood. The older punks ignored repeated warnings not to smoke in the building. There was an girl in a Janitors Against Apartheid shirt and mustard yellow Chucks that flirted with me but I was too shy to do anything about it. Good times.
ryhoyarbie@reddit
There’s two in the suburb I grew up in about 10-15 minutes away from where I’m at now.
crystallmytea@reddit
Just took my 7 year old to one close by for a birthday party. It was cool, I didn’t skate but they let you walk around with your kid if they weren’t good at skating. It was an awesome 3 hours of bonding.
PilotC150@reddit
We have one nearby. The kids love it!
Odd_Conclusion_7143@reddit
I worked at the roller rink my senior year and when I was home from college the first year. I loved that job/
mck2018@reddit
We have one like 5 min down the road from where I live. Being one of the only attractions in the area, we spend lots of time there for kids birthday parties!
mom_bombadill@reddit
I always had so much fun but I SUCKED at roller skating. My knees and butt would be all bruised up the next day. Worth it imo
