I’m a pilot and ex-instructor getting back into instruction free-lance and I’m wondering what a fair rate would be. Primary instruction.

I charge $70 and get no complaints about it. Cheaper than what the local schools charge.

May I ask your location?

NorCal Bay Area, for vanilla primary instruction in a tricycle trainer aircraft, $90-100 is average. For specialized instruction in tailwheel, CSIP, Bonanza transitions, type specific training (cabin class single/twins), ranges from $120-250/hr.

I’m not in the bay, rather East or Sacramento. Seems 80/hr for initial instruction seems to be a reasonable figure. Appreciate your response!

This varies greatly by location. Where are you?
Footefellow@reddit (OP)
Located Northern California. PPL instruction

Probably $80-100/hr in the bay, less than that in Sacramento.

East of Sacramento, thanks for the insight!

And what are you teaching. Most places I know have different rates for private versus all the others, plus different rates for checkouts and one-off endorsements since that eats into your availability for recurring students and that customer is in and out after one or a couple of flights.
