Windows 10 Hardware Upgrade Question
Posted by b-dizl@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 9 comments
I upgraded my motherboard and CPU on my windows 10 PC but I'm having issues reinstalling windows.
My question is is resetting windows sufficient or do I need to do a clean install of windows to make sure that the new hardware works properly?

A clean install is often recomended when you swap hardware out.

That's what usually do but in this case I can't seem to get my system to do fresh reinstall. I keep getting an error saying 0x80070002-0x20009 The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during PREPARE_ROLLBACK operation

Remove any additional drives from your system other than the one that's going to be the boot drive (if you have any).

Would m.2 drives also cause this issue? My main drive is a solid state drive connected with sata cable then I have 2 additional m.2 drives

Probably. I'd remove everything that is not the main drive and connect them after.

So I think I just stumbled into a work around. I had already started the reset and once it completed it gave me an option to load windows from the windows 10 install flash drive. That then took me to the disk partition menu and I was able to delete the current partition and do a fresh install. I've been messing around with this for days but I think I finally got it to do a fresh install. Thanks for the quick response tho

So what was the work around really? Sorry what you described is the normal "clean install" procedure!

I guess it's not so much a workaround as it is a different way than I usually do a fresh install. Usually I would choose to boot from the windows USB drive or run the setup file from the USB drive and reinstall that way but both of those wouldn't work. So instead I went into windows recovery and chose to reset my pc and it gave me an option to reinstall windows from the USB which I didn't think it would do.

Ok, that's great then! Hopefully no more problems.
