The ‘doomsday fish’ returns to California shores for the second time this year. Scientists don’t know why. | CNN

Sharing more for the relevancy as it relates to my previous post about the potential for increased seismic and volcanic activity in the region in the coming years.
My quick-take is that an increase in outgassing on the sea floor is causing oxygen levels to be altered, leading to die-offs of oarfish. Combine this with the sulfur smell that washed over the west coast a few months ago, on top of generally increased seismic activity around Baker and Rainier, and I'm highly suspicious something is going to happen sooner than later.

This isn't Intel. This is the exact opposite.
The article even states there is no correlation.
Here a paper on it.

Thats wild - Ive never seen a Conclusion written in the Abstract, and I have no access to evaluate their methodology even though the authors point out shortcomings in the Abstract.

What do sulphur smells in inland Oregon and Washington have to do with 3 dead fish 1,200 miles away (and 2 months later) near San Diego?
deciduousredcoat@reddit (OP)
Why are you being so deliberately obtuse and snarky?
The smells were not isolated to the PNW, nor were they in the interior. The sulphur smell was reported as far south as San Diego, as far north as Victoria, BC, and entirely west of the Cascades - not east.
There are many fault lines running through the region, but the primary is the Cascadia Sunduction. This is a deepwater fault that, as a subductive fault, would result in chemical tectonic upwelling. This is the counterpart to the St. Helens fault line along the Cascade Mountain Range.
The smell of sulfur has not been scientifically tied to earthquakes, but it has been tied to an increase in volcanic activity. Any meteorologist can explain how those smells could come off the ocean and get trapped against the Cascade Range and reflected into that PNW corridor where they were smelled. An increase in general volcanic activity has not be shown to correlate to an increased likelihood of earthquake, however, volcanic eruption has.
Now go back and look at the tectnoic incidences over the last 12 months or so. Iirc Baker and Hood showed increased activity but Rainier and Helens did not (Someone linked the data in the previous post - Im not going digging for it atm). An increase in seismic activity on the mountain has been shown to be a reasonable predictor of eruption - that's why we monitor it.
Look, I get that the title was on the nose and may have been offputting to you, but we're all here to help each other by sharing relevant stuff. Sorry if you didnt find it relevant.

Gee what could possibly cause an algae bloom. Certainly not untreated waste water....

Surely there isn't one going on this month...

Surely waste water doesn't have a sulphur smell....
https://www.kpbs.org/news/health/2024/11/15/officials-launch-new-online-tool-and-guidance-for-south-bays-rotten-egg-smell
And surely this time of year doesn't have upwelling events ...

But you're right. It's probably a volcano. I wouldn't expect anything less from here.
El_Stugato@reddit
The guy had a theory and voiced it.
You don't have to be such a cunt about it.
NNYPhillipJFry@reddit
Looks like the other guy had a theory too. Why are you being rude to someone for sharing a separate theory? Is only OP allowed a soap box to spout theories from? And since when is this prepper theories and not prepper Intel?
deciduousredcoat@reddit (OP)
Surely you got some kind of training to be so insufferably obtuse?
DudeLoveBaby@reddit
You mean to tell me the Ooky Spooky Fish doesn't mean Venus by Tuesday?? Bullshit, I tell you!
(I really expected this post to have any sources for any of OP's other parts of his theory, but alas...)

It's Jupiter by January, fish love alliteration.

Yeah, I don't even know what their previous post was, must be on an alt account.

The only intel this provides is what we already know. This world is dying. And we are responsible
Big-Professional-187@reddit
Lol. No there's a whole ecosystem kilometers below the planet that doesn't require sunlight. Cave bacteria is dangerous if the nutrient chain breaks down. It's like the earth farts but the fart kills 80% of everybody in 5 years.
Awesome_hospital@reddit
Nope, gonna be volcanoes and earthquakes and tsunamis and fissures with fire shooting out fishies told me so

Everyone else does

Some ATACMS just sent a russian ammunition depot flying. Maybe related..

Oh really? Scientists really don't know why???

Lol, exactly. Journo speak. Scientists have several prevailing theories but none have been confirmed as truth

The events of 1272-1351 ce would like to have a word with you. Also Google bacteria that can survive without sunlight that eat hydrogen sulfide deep in the this planets crust. Also look up caves that smell. Rabbit hole 🐰 awaits thee.
donairdaddydick@reddit
Googled you’re exact sentence on the events, even added “fish die off” and “fish” and “ocean event” separate search’s and only comes up with your Reddit comment. What happened?
Big-Professional-187@reddit
Google will produce more results each search attempt over time. Digital shrinkflation and personalized results can mean 2 different people searching the same string could get 1 page for one an 185 pages of results for another user. It's wild.
nixstyx@reddit
I always snicker at the headlines with:
"Scientists don’t know why"
I just imagine some reporter sticking a microphone in one random scientist's face and asking, why did this fish in particular die? YOU DON'T KNOW? This must be a scientific mystery.
diaryofsnow@reddit
Babe wake up, the skibidi fish died
AdditionalAd9794@reddit
I feel like this happens a few times every year one of these fish wash up, then nothing happens.
I think it's just our oceans our fucked up, be it pollution, AG runoff, global warming, over fishing, and who knows what else
deciduousredcoat@reddit (OP)
Interestingly, even though there's been no proven correlation, the last two to wash up in CA preceded the Russian and Indonesian earthquakes earlier this year. Considering the currents, entirely feasible that chemical upwelling led to an algal bloom and subsequent oarfish die-off that landed them on the beaches of CA.
