Susan Smith was just denied parole for the first time. This case was the first time I've heard of a parent killing their own children. Back in 1994.

I remember seeing her on TV being interviewed about the "abduction ". Both my husband and I were confused by her demeanor and facial expressions. We put it down to shock.
RandomBelch@reddit
She had the exact same tone of voice and emotional affect during the parole hearing. Same shitty acting. She's learned nothing in 30 years. She's not rehabilitated at all. She's still trying to play the same game.
sambashare@reddit
Does she still blame everyone and everything else and consider herself a victim? If so, I've met people like that, unfortunately. Little or no accountability, won't make any changes because it's everyone else with the problem, apparently...
napkinwipes@reddit
She’s been busted getting it on with CO’s. You can google it.
KeyFeeFee@reddit
That’s wild though, inmates can’t truly consent because of that power dynamic.
TheAskewOne@reddit
Thankfully the COs were prosecuted and jailed. Seriously what's wrong with people?
napkinwipes@reddit
You’re correct. I think Shirley, the female inmate on Oz could have been inspired by Susan.
ewing666@reddit
definitely
RandomBelch@reddit
They specifically asked her about the recent incident involving her talking with the media. She flat out immediately played the perpetual victim game. Smith blatantly attempted to capitalize on the recent media attention, got caught in the act, and then tried to make herself out to be a victim saying that she'd been deceived about what was being filmed.
lisalisaandtheoccult@reddit
She did?! I didn’t hear that! How is she the victim?
ewing666@reddit
she had a troubled life but that doesn't excuse what she did
AlilAwesome81@reddit
I noticed this also. Did you watch the whole thing? I couldn’t make it through more than a min
RandomBelch@reddit
Yeah. It was livestreamed on YouTube. There are lots of videos of it out there.
blove135@reddit
Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means. I know what you think it means, sonny. To me, it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job.

Popcorn_Blitz@reddit
Thing is you can't really tell what an appropriate reaction is. Like, obviously not looking relieved and celebrating, but if anything happened to my kids most folks would probably be suspicious of me because I don't really cry in a crisis and tend to be very stoic and take charge. I wouldn't be helpless enough for most people's taste.
Zealousideal-Day7385@reddit
I was fairly young during this, but one thing I clearly remember was she was all over tv while her boys were “missing” and she would always cry, but there would never be tears. She’d just rub her eyes and make sobbing noises.
emdess8578@reddit
Thing was, she looked excited. Like she was trying not to look excited.
My husband worked in Juvenile services at the time, and he said " copy her expression, something's not right." I kinda got what he was saying.
Anyway, you are right. Hindsight is 20/20.
Popcorn_Blitz@reddit
That's so gross. I wasn't paying that much attention to the news at the time. I'm glad she was denied parole.
sagitta_luminus@reddit
I remember my mom immediately knew she was lying. She said “She’s always perfectly primped on camera. If you were missing I would be too distraught to even think to do my hair and makeup.”
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
I was young, and hindsight is 20/20, but she was def weird on tv. Not Ramseys-weird, but weird enough.
EmmalouEsq@reddit
I lived near that area for a summer in the early 2000s and all the local folks i spoke will would inevitably mention this.
She's evil. How could she do that over a man?
TheAskewOne@reddit
The case traumatized me at the time. And TIL that two correctional officers had sex with her in prison and were subsequently arrested and jailed. WTF is wrong with people?
TheAskewOne@reddit
Is she the one who drowned her kids in her car? The traumatized me at the time.
CookieTX2022@reddit
I always get this case and Andrea Yates confused. Seems like they were so similar. I thought Andrea was before Andrea but I guess not?
Stop_icant@reddit
Andrea Yates suffered from severe postpartum psychosis, after her fourth child. She and her husband Rusty were advised not to have any more children, but her husband refused to use contraceptives, allow her to be on BC or have her tubes tide even though he continued to have sex with her.
Before and after they had their fifth child, Rusty was warned by Andrea’s psychiatrist not to leave her unattended with their children. Andrea had already confessed to wanting to hurt her children and she had attempted suicide four times before the fifth child was born.
Rusty did not believe in psychiatric medications so he not only ignored doctors’ diagnosis and warnings, but denied Andrea treatment while continuing to leave Andre alone with the children while he worked. This is a family that could have afforded help, but not only did Rusty fail to secure his kids protection from their sick mother—several family members on both sides testified he never even changed a single diaper for any of their children.
Rusty has forgiven Andrea and places blame entirely on her illness. He has never publicly acknowledged his failure to heed several clear warnings that his wife needed treatment, his children needed protected from their sick mother and that he was a neglectful husband and father in the most basic sense.
Andrea has been in a mental health facility since 2006 when her sentence was changed to not guilty by reason of insanity. She has never petitioned for release and seems content to remain in the custody of the hospital forever. Rusty and Andre speak monthly and reminisce about their children.
Opposite-Horse-3080@reddit
I have all the sympathy in the world for Andrea Yates. Her husband should've served jail time too. He didn't see her as a human being. There are backyard breeders who have more care for their dogs than he did for his wife. He wasn't just indifferent, he was malicious.
As for this one, I watched her hearing today just to make sure she stayed in prison.
CookieTX2022@reddit
Definitely agree with all the comments about the difference between severe mental illness/ postpartum and then a calculated murderer. I guess because I was a teenager I get the order of some of these high profile cases mixed up. Even with sympathy for Andrea, it still terrified me the thought of a mother drowning her babies in the bath tub. It literally haunted me. I guess because I was quite a bit younger for Susan’s I don’t remember all the details. Absolutely despicable that she tried to blame a black man.
Opposite-Horse-3080@reddit
We're probably the same age, because I was a kid when Susan Smith drowned her kids.
Yeah, Andrea Yates case is very haunting. It disturbed a lot of people, so you're definitely not alone. It disturbs me.
Candid_Term6960@reddit
Couldn’t agree with you more. He had no care for his wife, and went on living and breeding. Nuts!
BestBodybuilder7329@reddit
You know it’s not Andrea Yates because she refuses to be released. She is the exact opposite of this POS.
momofwon@reddit
Andrea Yates was 2001. She had severe mental health issues and was pressured by her husband into having more children because Jesus. I have tremendous sympathy for her.
Susan Smith is an evil monster who killed her children in a terrifying, painful way and then blamed a Black man for it. I hope she never gets out.
middlehill@reddit
My heart breaks for Andrea Yates. That was a mental break with reality. I wish there were legal consequences for her husband. He ruined her.
Susan Smith was in control. She used racism in her fake story. She had a pathetic motive. I feel sick any time I think about those sweet boys and her watching them struggle. She's a monster, and it's good to see she'll be staying in prison.
Owww_My_Ovaries@reddit
Check out the Law sub where there's some fool advocating that she should be released. That she doesn't have any more kids and isn't a danger so... let her out.
I can't with this world anymore
Munchkins_nDragons@reddit
Oh sure. I suppose that she’s been punished enough too, after all she wasn’t able to watch her children grow up and that’s the cruelest punishment for a mother? /s Seriously though, keep her there forever. May she never know freedom, either in body or in spirit.
WENUS_envy@reddit
I know you're joking but as a bereaved mom I truly wonder if there are people out there who think like this? Fuck this bitch. I hope she rots in there with a very painful and chronic disease.
Owww_My_Ovaries@reddit
She can rot
Familiar_Quantity441@reddit
that guy is a complete tool. I was browsing this one to see if hed pop up lol
Both-Artichoke5117@reddit
Diane Downs was the first one I remember hearing about because my aunt read the book Small Sacrifices & loaned it to me in junior high.
QuixoticCacophony@reddit
There was a somewhat similar case that happened less than three miles from where I lived in 1989. A man drove his car into the Detroit River with his wife and four young children inside. He and his wife escaped while all four kids drowned. He claimed a leg cramp or something as the reason why he couldn't take his foot of the brake. He was convicted of murder and got life in prison. It was a HUGE story in our area, not sure why it wasn't nationwide like the Susan Smith case. His name was Lawrence DeLisle if you want to read about the case. Nexflix did a documentary about it called "Down River" which was surreal because it showed all these businesses and landmarks I grew up with.To this day, I can remember the names of those poor kids who weren't much younger than me at the time.
Very glad this woman is remaining in prison. She should never get out.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
On the one hand, fuck any parent who betrays their children.
On the other it's not like she's going to re-offend...
fidgetypenguin123@reddit
Do you think though that people should be let out only if they might not re-offend (joke or not)? It's about about doing the time based on your crime, not just because we think they may have changed.
arcxjo@reddit
Yes. That should absofuckinglutely be question #1, Dukakis.
surfingbiscuits@reddit
But isn't that the whole point of parole?
Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
She was the first person I heard of as well (well that was guilty of the crime that is - Lindy Chamberlain was famously innocent and suffered a miscarriage of justice).
I was too young to notice anything suspicious with her reactions when she was in front of the press, but old enough to be utterly shocked when the stuff came out.
MrrCharlie@reddit
I remember when this happened and thinking she was guilty from the moment I saw her. She was so fake and clearly lying, at least to me as a young teen.
lisalisaandtheoccult@reddit
Me too she was way too calm and rehearsed
rels83@reddit
The more I’ve read about this case the more I blame her husband. She had serious post partum psychosis and he refused to let her get help or stop getting pregnant. He left her alone with the kids after being told by doctors it was not safe to do so.
S-jibe@reddit
She was also SA’d by her stepfather. Which continued till six months before the murders. She tried to commit suicide twice. She was not well.
lisalisaandtheoccult@reddit
Doonnn’t care
RandomBelch@reddit
And...?
jelloslug@reddit
She murdered her kids to please the guy she was sleeping with.
peggysue_82@reddit
Are you confusing her with Andrea Yates?
rels83@reddit
Yes, yes I am
fidgetypenguin123@reddit
This is like the second comment in a week on a post about her with someone getting her mixed up with Yates. Not sure if you're the same person but people need to get their information correct before posting. The husband in this case has nothing to do with this and was a victim himself. She had an affair and killed her 2 toddler kids because her side piece didn't want kids. Then lied and said a black man abducted them.
This was all on her and we can easily double check ourselves (including reading the link attached to this post) to not spread misinformation nor look like we don't know what we're talking about. We can also delete things when we're wrong or edit them. This does nothing to help people actually going through PPD/psychosis when it's compared to someone like this.
darkgothamite@reddit
I can still hear her fake crying, begging for the kidnapper to return her babies.
Between Susan Smith and Diane Downs, my young brain had a lot to comprehend.
BbyJ39@reddit
I’m surprised she’s still alive. They usually kill child murderers in prison. Shame.
OvertonsWindow@reddit
We really shouldn’t celebrate outsourcing punishment to other prisoners. Not murder, not rape, nothing.
RowanArkaynne@reddit
I could be wrong, but I believe they had her isolated for a while to prevent this from happening..
FoodHot6411@reddit
👍🏻
h3yd000ch00ch00@reddit
She broke down, but I didn’t see any tears. Just like when she was fake crying in the 90s. She just wiped her eyes a lot. I do not think she should get out. She drowned her babies because her boyfriend didn’t want kids. That’s not someone who should ever walk free again. I hate that the father of those two boys has to do this every two years from now on.
Spider-1205@reddit
I'm surprised she made it through the first year
CreatrixAnima@reddit
Good. She should never get parole. It’s not like she was mentally ill. She wanted her boyfriend and he didn’t want children. She’s evil.
IceSmiley@reddit
Omg I didn't know it was so long ago. I was 11 then and I knew all about this
Candid_Term6960@reddit
Funny how she has the clarity to blame a Black man, which resulted in all kinds of police aggression towards innocent Black people. Rot in jail!
ImHere4TheGiggles@reddit
I recently watched a show about this case because I was about 11 when this happened so I didn’t remember all of the details. I didn’t realize her and her husband were separated at the time and I’m pretty sure there was a new boyfriend involved who didn’t want kids or something. She’s a special kind of evil and I hope she gets beatin on the regular in prison…..
Godawgs1009@reddit
Bitch isn't going anywhere
Vegetable_Proof_4906@reddit
I can clearly remember when the Union County sheriff came on tv and announced she’d been charged. It shook the entire state to the core.
BlacksmithThink9494@reddit
Demon possession.
JasonGD1982@reddit
I remember being in the car after little league football practice heading home and they said on the news that it was her that killed her kids. I was in the backseat and just "She's a bitch". My mom and grandma just looked at each other and nodded lol.
AdmirableAd959@reddit
Sociopath who has been living it up in prison having sex with guards and doing drugs. I think we should let her out.
realdonaldtrumpsucks@reddit
I was about 10 and same… it was the first time it dawned on me that people… did… this.
Do I think she’s a danger to society? No.
Should she be released? No.
She strapped those kids in. She blamed another person.
But in the same hand I think the Menendez brothers should be paroled. And OJ was innocent.
miscnic@reddit
Every 2 years now?! That is absurd and disgusting to have to do to this father. Every TWO years!
hokie47@reddit
I don't know what is just punishment anymore. Really seeing women with massive postpartum issues. I don't know. Yes she did is totally wrong. Is she concern to our society probably not.
Zealousideal-Day7385@reddit
She drowned her children in a locked car that she drove into a lake because the man she was into didn’t want children.
Mental health can explain behavior, but it doesn’t excuse it.
She should die in prison.
Julversia@reddit
She wasn't postpartum. She got a new man who didn't like kids. So instead of kicking him to the curb, she strapped her boys into the car and sent it into a body of water. She stood on the shore and listened to them scream and cry for her help in saving them.
Then she went to the media and blamed a black man. The only way she isn't a concern for society is that she is likely past child-bearing age and can never do that to her own kids again.
She deserves to rot in prison, then in hell.
miscnic@reddit
I like how they gave her a possibility at life, then ripped it straight away. Kinda like the what she did to her boys. In that car seat. As she watched it sink.
FluxusFlotsam@reddit
Left out she tried to blame a black man in a classic Southern white woman cliche
Luckily this cunt waste didn’t get anyone lynched in SC
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
they do mention it in the report about halfway through.
That was the point where i stopped caring about her so-called post-partum and started paying attention to her clear afore-thought
HeyKayRenee@reddit
She tried get hardest though!
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
at the time, her lawyer tried for a post-partum insanity defense. But this report didn't say anything about that.
I lost all sympathy for her when it was revealed that she lied when she accused "a black guy" of abducting her kids. Fucking cow tryna start a lynching like that hag who got Emmitt Till lynched and claimed she was right til she died in her still-racist 80s.
Slamnflwrchild@reddit
Good.
Possible-Tangelo9344@reddit
Good. She deserves to rot.
angrybirdseller@reddit
Good, her behavor behind bars shows no rehabiliation.
Zealousideal-Day7385@reddit
She should never get out of prison.
maggie320@reddit
Good.
