Susan Smith was just denied parole for the first time. This case was the first time I've heard of a parent killing their own children. Back in 1994.

That lowlife scumbag should never be released, ever!! She knew what she was doing, she premeditated it. That’s first degree murder, not to mention murder of two innocent children. Should have been life without parole!!
emdess8578@reddit
I remember seeing her on TV being interviewed about the "abduction ". Both my husband and I were confused by her demeanor and facial expressions. We put it down to shock.
sagitta_luminus@reddit
I remember my mom immediately knew she was lying. She said “She’s always perfectly primped on camera. If you were missing I would be too distraught to even think to do my hair and makeup.”
Playful_Current_7209@reddit
Ikr?
Ok_Responsibility155@reddit
My mom caught it too! She immediately said that woman is lying, and correctly guessed Smith had done the killing herself. Then she mad a compelling argument to me on why she believed Smith did it.
winohellno@reddit
no blk man in s carolina would ever abduct two small white kids in a carjack for fun and then leave to drown as she said was the mans reasonings
susan is a monster for even thinking that let alone almost starting a racial war
Ok_Responsibility155@reddit
She didn't almost start a race war, but she did get several Black neighborhoods harrassed by the police. I remember talking to several Black people after her first interview, and not a one of them believed her story, and said much the same thing, that no Black carjacker would just kill two children for fun!
Popcorn_Blitz@reddit
Thing is you can't really tell what an appropriate reaction is. Like, obviously not looking relieved and celebrating, but if anything happened to my kids most folks would probably be suspicious of me because I don't really cry in a crisis and tend to be very stoic and take charge. I wouldn't be helpless enough for most people's taste.
Own_Satisfaction1840@reddit
Me too, but stoicism is debilitating, you can’t eat, you can’t sleep, and that becomes quickly apparent in your face, you drop weight like crazy, et. people know the real thing from a blatant liar this looney tune.
Popcorn_Blitz@reddit
Been there, but I respectfully disagree that people just know. When you hear folks talking about the same clip of someone who's kid is missing and some are saying they aren't crying enough but others are saying they are crying too much, meh... People think they know but they don't.
In any case- I hope you have found healthy and productive ways to handle your emotions- they always take their due at some point, best to find a healthy way to express them- it's a good skill to have in a crunch but not great as status quo.
KrisAlly@reddit
Yeah, I don’t like to put too much stock into human behavior/emotions with these cases. I‘m the type of person that can hold it together really well during tragedies, and then I might come unglued over the smallest of inconveniences. We are far too complex as people to over analyze how someone’s feeling based off how they’re acting.
Popcorn_Blitz@reddit
Exactly!
Zealousideal-Day7385@reddit
I was fairly young during this, but one thing I clearly remember was she was all over tv while her boys were “missing” and she would always cry, but there would never be tears. She’d just rub her eyes and make sobbing noises.
emdess8578@reddit
Thing was, she looked excited. Like she was trying not to look excited.
My husband worked in Juvenile services at the time, and he said " copy her expression, something's not right." I kinda got what he was saying.
Anyway, you are right. Hindsight is 20/20.
Popcorn_Blitz@reddit
That's so gross. I wasn't paying that much attention to the news at the time. I'm glad she was denied parole.
RandomBelch@reddit
She had the exact same tone of voice and emotional affect during the parole hearing. Same shitty acting. She's learned nothing in 30 years. She's not rehabilitated at all. She's still trying to play the same game.
Own_Satisfaction1840@reddit
💯%! Her behavior in jail should have been exemplary if she were remorseful, trying to redeem herself for the crime she committed that of itself, is unforgivable. Did she do that?! No, she behaved as the hussy she always was, as the malicious narcissist she always was, destroying people’s lives for the fun of it; she’s playing the character she thinks will win her her freedom. It didn’t work, and hopefully, they’ll never let her out, she doesn’t deserve to be free, she’s already free behind bars because she doesn’t feel any guilt. Her ex husband has been in a mental prison since she murdered their children…. She can’t be let out, that would be too unfair, no justice for those little angels.
sambashare@reddit
Does she still blame everyone and everything else and consider herself a victim? If so, I've met people like that, unfortunately. Little or no accountability, won't make any changes because it's everyone else with the problem, apparently...
RandomBelch@reddit
They specifically asked her about the recent incident involving her talking with the media. She flat out immediately played the perpetual victim game. Smith blatantly attempted to capitalize on the recent media attention, got caught in the act, and then tried to make herself out to be a victim saying that she'd been deceived about what was being filmed.
sambashare@reddit
Yeah, because of course. She's an innocent bystander in all of this /s
napkinwipes@reddit
She’s been busted getting it on with CO’s. You can google it.
KeyFeeFee@reddit
That’s wild though, inmates can’t truly consent because of that power dynamic.
TheAskewOne@reddit
Thankfully the COs were prosecuted and jailed. Seriously what's wrong with people?
napkinwipes@reddit
You’re correct. I think Shirley, the female inmate on Oz could have been inspired by Susan.
ewing666@reddit
definitely
lisalisaandtheoccult@reddit
She did?! I didn’t hear that! How is she the victim?
ewing666@reddit
she had a troubled life but that doesn't excuse what she did
AlilAwesome81@reddit
I noticed this also. Did you watch the whole thing? I couldn’t make it through more than a min
RandomBelch@reddit
Yeah. It was livestreamed on YouTube. There are lots of videos of it out there.
blove135@reddit
Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means. I know what you think it means, sonny. To me, it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job.
theshub@reddit
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
I was young, and hindsight is 20/20, but she was def weird on tv. Not Ramseys-weird, but weird enough.
Local_Ad_4295@reddit
Why was her ex husbands new gf (now wife) following her? I just listened on dateline podcast and questioned how stable she was if he was so extreme he could gas light a new gf into stalking her.
Steel_Magnolia4844@reddit
They were separated and in the process of divorce and Susan was using his adultery in her case. The new girlfriend was trying to catch Susan with her boyfriend to counter her claims in the divorce.
Steel_Magnolia4844@reddit
She should be drowned with goggles on that have her children's photo taped to them so that is the last thing she sees.
realdonaldtrumpsucks@reddit
I was about 10 and same… it was the first time it dawned on me that people… did… this.
Do I think she’s a danger to society? No.
Should she be released? No.
She strapped those kids in. She blamed another person.
But in the same hand I think the Menendez brothers should be paroled. And OJ was innocent.
bubblez4eva@reddit
Yeah haha, no. OJ was definitely not innocent.
MrrCharlie@reddit
I remember when this happened and thinking she was guilty from the moment I saw her. She was so fake and clearly lying, at least to me as a young teen.
Ok_Responsibility155@reddit
I didn't know she had done the killing, but I could tell (I was in my twenties),that she was faking her reaction and lying. I just didn't know what she was lying about.
lisalisaandtheoccult@reddit
Me too she was way too calm and rehearsed
angrybirdseller@reddit
Good, her behavor behind bars shows no rehabiliation.
Ok_Responsibility155@reddit
No she doesn't! Her parole interview shows the exact same shoddy acting she displayed in her earlier interviews Thirty years ago.
winohellno@reddit
no judge who remembers this case will ever let her out...for one it wouldn't be ideal for their career and needless to say, it's the type of case you study about in law school and most likely remembers seeing on tv about as a child or at least i did in elementary school. type of case that makes you want to become a lawyer. it stuck with us all. as for the type of person she is...she actually seems much worse now than she was then, but that's a true monster for ya. special place in hell for this witch.
BbyJ39@reddit
I’m surprised she’s still alive. They usually kill child murderers in prison. Shame.
Final-Warning1562@reddit
That's mental prison, woman prison not so much.
OvertonsWindow@reddit
We really shouldn’t celebrate outsourcing punishment to other prisoners. Not murder, not rape, nothing.
RowanArkaynne@reddit
I could be wrong, but I believe they had her isolated for a while to prevent this from happening..
dooly@reddit
Also never forget that she tried to pin the disappearance on two fictitious black men. She is a horrible human being that should be on death row.
CookieTX2022@reddit
I always get this case and Andrea Yates confused. Seems like they were so similar. I thought Andrea was before Andrea but I guess not?
momofwon@reddit
Andrea Yates was 2001. She had severe mental health issues and was pressured by her husband into having more children because Jesus. I have tremendous sympathy for her.
Susan Smith is an evil monster who killed her children in a terrifying, painful way and then blamed a Black man for it. I hope she never gets out.
middlehill@reddit
My heart breaks for Andrea Yates. That was a mental break with reality. I wish there were legal consequences for her husband. He ruined her.
Susan Smith was in control. She used racism in her fake story. She had a pathetic motive. I feel sick any time I think about those sweet boys and her watching them struggle. She's a monster, and it's good to see she'll be staying in prison.
wheezy_runner@reddit
He knew she was unstable and he still left her alone with those kids. He should've done some time for criminal negligence.
Blue_Plastic_88@reddit
He’s so disgusting IMO. He seems like the kind of guy who thinks you can just “pray away” mental illness and just snap yourself out of it. Even when it is severe and your wife is talking crazy, you’re sure she’ll just get over it if you leave her alone with a passel of young children. Ooookay…
ImaginaryFold2907@reddit
I have sympathy for Andrea as well. Her husband was such a controlling manipulative creep.
MehX73@reddit
Exactly. Andrea Yates had severe postpartum and everyone knew it, but no one was helping her.
Susan Smith planned this out in advance so her new boyfriend (who did not want kids) would stay with her. She blamed a black man which could have ended up with an innocent man being killed. She is pure evil. I lived only a few miles from her when this happened. She had everyone in a panic. Everyone was out driving around looking for her car hoping to help find those little boys. And the whole time, she knew they were at the bottom of the lake. She needs to stay exactly where she is.
Blue_Plastic_88@reddit
I do think Andrea Yates is a different situation. It sounds like she really was having psychotic delusions. And even though she has been offered the possibility of release, she has refused it and opted to stay in the mental hospital.
Prestigious_Ad_5825@reddit
Susan Smith is closer to Diane Downs than Andrea Yates in terms of psychological profile. Yates was psychotic at the time of the killings and has since expressed remorse for her actions-cant say the same for the other two.
Stop_icant@reddit
Andrea Yates suffered from severe postpartum psychosis, after her fourth child. She and her husband Rusty were advised not to have any more children, but her husband refused to use contraceptives, allow her to be on BC or have her tubes tide even though he continued to have sex with her.
Before and after they had their fifth child, Rusty was warned by Andrea’s psychiatrist not to leave her unattended with their children. Andrea had already confessed to wanting to hurt her children and she had attempted suicide four times before the fifth child was born.
Rusty did not believe in psychiatric medications so he not only ignored doctors’ diagnosis and warnings, but denied Andrea treatment while continuing to leave Andre alone with the children while he worked. This is a family that could have afforded help, but not only did Rusty fail to secure his kids protection from their sick mother—several family members on both sides testified he never even changed a single diaper for any of their children.
Rusty has forgiven Andrea and places blame entirely on her illness. He has never publicly acknowledged his failure to heed several clear warnings that his wife needed treatment, his children needed protected from their sick mother and that he was a neglectful husband and father in the most basic sense.
Andrea has been in a mental health facility since 2006 when her sentence was changed to not guilty by reason of insanity. She has never petitioned for release and seems content to remain in the custody of the hospital forever. Rusty and Andre speak monthly and reminisce about their children.
HolyzombieBatman@reddit
There’s a podcast called Trust Me that covers cults, early on in the show they had a guest on who was raised in the same cult as Andrea Yates. It is so hard to listen to, but she doesn’t want to be released, she wants to die. Her story is an all a round tragedy and Rusty Yates should be in prison not raising another family with a second young wife browbeaten into marriage by her religion.
Opposite-Horse-3080@reddit
I have all the sympathy in the world for Andrea Yates. Her husband should've served jail time too. He didn't see her as a human being. There are backyard breeders who have more care for their dogs than he did for his wife. He wasn't just indifferent, he was malicious.
As for this one, I watched her hearing today just to make sure she stayed in prison.
CookieTX2022@reddit
Definitely agree with all the comments about the difference between severe mental illness/ postpartum and then a calculated murderer. I guess because I was a teenager I get the order of some of these high profile cases mixed up. Even with sympathy for Andrea, it still terrified me the thought of a mother drowning her babies in the bath tub. It literally haunted me. I guess because I was quite a bit younger for Susan’s I don’t remember all the details. Absolutely despicable that she tried to blame a black man.
Opposite-Horse-3080@reddit
We're probably the same age, because I was a kid when Susan Smith drowned her kids.
Yeah, Andrea Yates case is very haunting. It disturbed a lot of people, so you're definitely not alone. It disturbs me.
Candid_Term6960@reddit
Couldn’t agree with you more. He had no care for his wife, and went on living and breeding. Nuts!
BestBodybuilder7329@reddit
You know it’s not Andrea Yates because she refuses to be released. She is the exact opposite of this POS.
FluxusFlotsam@reddit
Left out she tried to blame a black man in a classic Southern white woman cliche
Luckily this cunt waste didn’t get anyone lynched in SC
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
they do mention it in the report about halfway through.
That was the point where i stopped caring about her so-called post-partum and started paying attention to her clear afore-thought
Blue_Plastic_88@reddit
The car reportedly took 6 minutes to sink, so she had a little time to regret what she did and get help to save her kids. But she didn’t.
Just in my personal opinion, I don’t believe she has changed one bit in 30 years.
I know it’s probably impossible for someone who is truly remorseful to show that outwardly. If they don’t cry, people will say they are evil and unfeeling and not sorry, but if they do cry, they can be accused of faking it.
Still, I think what she did, combined with her behavior right after and her continued infractions in prison and her strange facial expressions and statements at the hearing, indicate that she should never be released.
HeyKayRenee@reddit
She tried get hardest though!
QuixoticCacophony@reddit
There was a somewhat similar case that happened less than three miles from where I lived in 1989. A man drove his car into the Detroit River with his wife and four young children inside. He and his wife escaped while all four kids drowned. He claimed a leg cramp or something as the reason why he couldn't take his foot of the brake. He was convicted of murder and got life in prison. It was a HUGE story in our area, not sure why it wasn't nationwide like the Susan Smith case. His name was Lawrence DeLisle if you want to read about the case. Nexflix did a documentary about it called "Down River" which was surreal because it showed all these businesses and landmarks I grew up with.To this day, I can remember the names of those poor kids who weren't much younger than me at the time.
Very glad this woman is remaining in prison. She should never get out.
ImaginaryFold2907@reddit
Thanks for sharing, I’m gonna check out the documentary. How people can be so evil, oh my goodness.

ImaginaryFold2907@reddit
I agree. And to get possibility of parole in the first place is pure insanity.
Galactic_Chimp@reddit
rels83@reddit
The more I’ve read about this case the more I blame her husband. She had serious post partum psychosis and he refused to let her get help or stop getting pregnant. He left her alone with the kids after being told by doctors it was not safe to do so.
S-jibe@reddit
She was also SA’d by her stepfather. Which continued till six months before the murders. She tried to commit suicide twice. She was not well.
RandomBelch@reddit
And...?
S-jibe@reddit
It points to why. Any healthy sane person wouldn’t kill their kids. Not saying she should get out, but she isn’t well, maybe a psych hospital would be better.

jelloslug@reddit
She murdered her kids to please the guy she was sleeping with.
peggysue_82@reddit
Are you confusing her with Andrea Yates?
rels83@reddit
Yes, yes I am
fidgetypenguin123@reddit
This is like the second comment in a week on a post about her with someone getting her mixed up with Yates. Not sure if you're the same person but people need to get their information correct before posting. The husband in this case has nothing to do with this and was a victim himself. She had an affair and killed her 2 toddler kids because her side piece didn't want kids. Then lied and said a black man abducted them.
This was all on her and we can easily double check ourselves (including reading the link attached to this post) to not spread misinformation nor look like we don't know what we're talking about. We can also delete things when we're wrong or edit them. This does nothing to help people actually going through PPD/psychosis when it's compared to someone like this.
Weary-Jelly7802@reddit
I don't doubt she was abused as a kid, and people have psychological breaks leading to violence/neglect. But she had such an overwhelming amount of factors that snuff that as the singular reason why she chose to kill her kids that way. Was having an affair with someone who did NOT want children, seemed over her old life and wanted a new one, was racist and blamed a black man for randomly stealing her car then dumping it in a lake? That's not what carjackers typically do when they see other passengers in a vehicle. The idea they were drowned to death is horrific, what a psychotically cruel thing to do to sell a BS story. There was SO MUCH forethought involved in every step leading to their death. She only confessed when they had zero options available anymore.
Writeforwhiskey@reddit
I had family living in SC at the time and when she blamed a Black man for kidnapping her kids, many Black men in the area went through hell. Random stops, searches and being roughed up . May this bitch rot there for killing her kids and trying to get Black men killed to save her sorry ass.
Maanzacorian@reddit
I was 13. This and Rodney King were probably my introductions to racism in society.
The line between punishment and rehabilitation is very hazy. I do believe that in many cases, rehabilitation is the answer. I also believe that in some cases, punishment is the answer. She deserves to die in prison.
EmmalouEsq@reddit
I lived near that area for a summer in the early 2000s and all the local folks i spoke will would inevitably mention this.
She's evil. How could she do that over a man?
TheAskewOne@reddit
The case traumatized me at the time. And TIL that two correctional officers had sex with her in prison and were subsequently arrested and jailed. WTF is wrong with people?
TheAskewOne@reddit
Is she the one who drowned her kids in her car? The traumatized me at the time.
Owww_My_Ovaries@reddit

Oh sure. I suppose that she’s been punished enough too, after all she wasn’t able to watch her children grow up and that’s the cruelest punishment for a mother? /s Seriously though, keep her there forever. May she never know freedom, either in body or in spirit.

Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
She was the first person I heard of as well (well that was guilty of the crime that is - Lindy Chamberlain was famously innocent and suffered a miscarriage of justice).
I was too young to notice anything suspicious with her reactions when she was in front of the press, but old enough to be utterly shocked when the stuff came out.

She broke down, but I didn’t see any tears. Just like when she was fake crying in the 90s. She just wiped her eyes a lot. I do not think she should get out. I don't know what is just punishment anymore. Really seeing women with massive postpartum issues. I don't know. Yes she did is totally wrong. Is she concern to our society probably not.
Zealousideal-Day7385@reddit
She drowned her children in a locked car that she drove into a lake because the man she was into didn’t want children.
Mental health can explain behavior, but it doesn’t excuse it.
She should die in prison.
Julversia@reddit
She wasn't postpartum. She got a new man who didn't like kids. So instead of kicking him to the curb, she strapped her boys into the car and sent it into a body of water. She stood on the shore and listened to them scream and cry for her help in saving them.
Then she went to the media and blamed a black man. The only way she isn't a concern for society is that she is likely past child-bearing age and can never do that to her own kids again.
She deserves to rot in prison, then in hell.
miscnic@reddit
I like how they gave her a possibility at life, then ripped it straight away. Kinda like the what she did to her boys. In that car seat. As she watched it sink.
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
at the time, her lawyer tried for a post-partum insanity defense. But this report didn't say anything about that.
I lost all sympathy for her when it was revealed that she lied when she accused "a black guy" of abducting her kids. Fucking cow tryna start a lynching like that hag who got Emmitt Till lynched and claimed she was right til she died in her still-racist 80s.
