For those of y’all informed on gun laws

Hypothetically if there was a ban on certain firearms in my state, what would proceed for those people who own said banned guns. I read about a “grandfather clause”. I’m assuming that would apply to any state?

Please stay in school. Pay attention during Civics/Government class.
The Anti-Freedom people are learning. Future bans will not likely contain grandfather clauses.

ATF HAS ENTERED THE CHAT

Hopefully D.O.G.E severely wreaks the ATF.

If the government bans something you already own, sometimes they grandfather them in, sometimes they give you a month to dispose of them. No way to know.
Snub-Nose-Sasquatch@reddit
They would require people to register those firearms. Of course, nobody actually does that!

LOL!

Depends on the law. California redefined what assault weapons are and has an outright ban on purchasing and transferring. But if you owned one already, you were required to register it (mail in forms). If you are found with an unregistered assault weapon, you can be charged and sentenced.
The handgun roster, in simple terms, only restricts purchasing new from a dealer. But you can still possess and own it.

Grandfathering clauses are not an automatic addition to a ban. Some proposed bans may have them. Some may not.

That entierly depends on how the law is written, I don't think nj's AWB had a "grandfathering" clause, for example. Even then, the legislature could just remove that clause in the legislative session if they wanted to.

It's going to depend on how the law is phrased, so it will vary from state to state. Grandfather clauses are not automatic.

So long as it doesn't leave your ownership your good under that clause. Certain states allow those guns to be sold private sale from person to person. But not through a dealer
