Cypress Hill

I’m sick of people today. I threw on Cypress Hill first album, Cypress Hill. Been a while since I’ve listened to this disc end to end.
Most of the guys I knew who were into them always talked about temples of boom or Black Sunday but my favorites always been their first album. It’s raw. It’s unpolished. The beats are fresh.
CubesFan@reddit
That 80s-90s rap was the shit. My only true "old man doesn't get it" is that I don't get the new rap music. To me, there's no flow to it. And, it's soooo establishment. I want my antidisestablishmentarianism with bad ass beats and good rhymes.
HollyCalamity@reddit
That’s one of my, “I guess I’m getting old,” things. I just don’t “get” most rap or hip hop I hear today. To be fair, I haven’t really sought it out, but whenever I hear it, it generally sounds pretty generic to me.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I will die in the hill that Gen Z actually really doesn't have any taste at all and it's not an 'old man' thing at all.

Buuuuut have you heard Prof? https://youtu.be/cI_zFU1K69c?si=rGpxAkqScLmcZXro
Or Aesop Rock?

Only Aesop could make a legit song about a bullfrog.
LeroyChestnut@reddit
What’s up, fellow Gampos?
wheres_the_revolt@reddit
I literally just discovered Prof yesterday and am so excited!
Also Aesop Rock is 48 lmao
Transplanted_Cactus@reddit
It's kinda crazy how long Aesop's career has been. I discovered him in my mid 20s and here I am, 42, listening to his new album.
wheres_the_revolt@reddit
Daylight is in my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Hilariously I saw him live in Portland in 2002 and had apparently never seen a picture of him. I was looking around the venue and was like damn, even for Portland this is an extremely white crowd, and then he came out and I was like omg he’s white how did I miss that? 😂
Transplanted_Cactus@reddit
OMG 😂 yeah he is absolutely Generic White Guy #3. But damn, he's amazing. From his art to his lyrics.
We've probably discussed him before. I recommend his music every chance I get and every time someone is like "Yes!" I feel so satisfied lol
wheres_the_revolt@reddit
Omg I also use the generic white guy with numbers thing! Are we the same person? 🤣
Transplanted_Cactus@reddit
We are at the very least sharing some brain matter lol
wheres_the_revolt@reddit
Hopefully you have some extra cause I sure don’t 😆

klockworx@reddit
Wow...43 and just found out I'm not alone...I share the same views as above about mumblerap and the like...and pretty much all the new stuff the kids listen to...my consistent answer to this problem is telling people about AES and prof...
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
Prof? Really?
To me Prof is a perfect example of new rap that I can't really get behind. Although he's not really all that "new" nowadays, but i had the same thought the first time I heard King Gampo.
He has a few songs I like, but I definitely wouldn't compare him to 90s rap.
CubesFan@reddit
No I haven't. I will give it a listen. I'm totally open to hear new music, but just find that the "popular" rap songs I come across don't do it for me.
wheres_the_revolt@reddit
Aesop Rock is older than most of us on this sub (48) and has been making music for around 30 years! He’s amazing and you should absolutely listen to this song.
I just discovered prof yesterday (thanks Spotify) and they’re awesome too!

90’s rap was great, 80’s was pretty shit TBH.
djsynrgy@reddit
BRUH.
KRS-ONE?! Eric B and Rakim?! Beastie Boys? NWA? DMC? De La Soul? LL Cool J? Salt N Peppa? Ghetto Boys? Biz Markie? Public Enemy? Ice-T? 2 Live Crew? Even GangStarr's debut was (just) before '90.
And I'm not even a scholar; I was more of a rock guy at the time. Still, there was a ton of dope stuff in the 80's. It just wasn't all as commercially successful as it became in the 90's.
And the late 90's had a lot of terrible stuff, too. With hindsight, that whole wave of Diddy-in-the-video/lazy-sampling/fisheye-lens/it's-big-business-now, really seemed to scramble everyone's brains.

My sweet Summer Child, have you not yet been treated to the trove of comedic gold gifted to us by Cheech & Chong?
A family friend put this album on a tape for me roundabouts '90; I was 10. I must have listened to it a hundred times. It's high-larious. "Dave's Not Here" remains a favorite, classic sketch.
AlienDog496@reddit
Right? It’s all hard beats and I don’t know what. I miss funk samples.

Own_Experience_8229@reddit
Griselda makes some dope shit. Also Statik Selektah.
Checktheusernombre@reddit
Other than Kendrick, is anyone out there today like Public Enemy was just saying fuck the system? That raw anger and rage at the injustice of it all.
As a white kid, this really made me deeply understand how messed up our country's racial issues are.
Transplanted_Cactus@reddit
They're rap adjacent in that they're more rap rock, like a modern day Rage Against the Machine (they just released a song with Tom Morello for Venom The Last Dance), but grandson has some pretty angry lyrics and make some damn good music.
theface19@reddit
But... with kids now in sports in middle/ high school, a lot of the warm-up music is 90s/2000s rap/ hip hop.
Independent_Day985@reddit
Antidisestablishmentarianism is the opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of England.

One of the few albums I was able to impress my Gen Z nephew with that he hadn't heard. They've kind of slipped out of the public consciousness though.

Love that album. Instant hype when I hear "Duke, Duke, Duke..." start up on a playlist.
MLDaffy@reddit
I always preferred Self Titled and Black Sunday. I never got the Temples of Boom hype. Like 2 good songs on there that I liked. The other is non stop bangers. Up until IV was my favorite time. Skull & Bones was last album I've listened to of them cause that's when I checked out
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
Yep same here. I couldn’t tell you what they’ve done since skull and bones but I’d sure as hell buy a ticket to see them if they came through my area.
MLDaffy@reddit
Yup I still would too. Haven't gave up on my love for them even though I technically haven't heard a new song in 20 years 😂
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
A few months ago over the summer I saw B real post and it was legit him.
Maybe we can page him lol.

The underground scene had some of the best shows I've been to.
Living legends Grouch and Eli Atmosphere Mr lif Del the funky homosapien Aesop Rock Brother Ali Dilated peoples People under the stairs Eyedea and abilities Zion I Sage Francis Pharcyde Who cares
Late 90s some of it was only around on tapes or burned CDs eventually. I had a tape of some sage Francis battle raps or a bunch of other ones which I've never been to hear again. But the shows were wild. 98-99.
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
Word up I saw a lot of those guys in the early 00’s at small clubs, great MCs but really amazing DJs
mackelnuts@reddit
I saw Cypress Hill about 5 years ago opening for Redman/Method-man and Snoop Dogg. They were the best of the three acts. They can really put on a show. Killed it.
616n8y3ree@reddit
It might interest anyone that B Real actually has an account on here and is pretty active tbh. He replies, likes etc it’s pretty dope for us old folks that didn’t think we’d ever be able to talk to people we looked up to!
Spyrios@reddit
Just saw them at Riot Fest in Chicago this year. I had no idea that you could literally create a smoke cloud outside from all the weed.
Also they were fucking amazing.

Agile_District_8794@reddit
They recently played the Royal Albert Hall with the LSO. It was sometime in the summer. My guess is they were high.
Johhnynumber5ht2a@reddit
They were permanently banned from SNL because their DJ smoked a joint live on stage.
Agile_District_8794@reddit
My x wife passed out during "i want to get high" at a festival in NYC while we were getting high. Again. They were getting high onstage, too. It was fun.

Hurt2039@reddit
Cypress Hill was the first concert I attended as a sophomore in high school.
helluva_monsoon@reddit
ME TOO! My parents believed me when I said it was a Christian band. Pretty sure I've never been so stoned in my life. The flickering of lighters all over the stadium was a trip, and joints were just constantly being passed all around. What fun!
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
Damn I bet a lot of weed was smoked at that concert. I saw them for the first time my senior year in ‘99 and their whole crew was smoking huge joints on stage
Hurt2039@reddit
It was my first experience with the stuff, Mxpx opened for them and you could catch the faint smell that someone in the audience lit up but once CH hit the stage there was a very noticeable haze settling over the heads of the people in the pit that stuck around throughout their set & most of the Offspring’s set.
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
Yo Mxpx and Offspring too?? That’s a great first concert!!
ytown@reddit
Agree. Love this album.
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
Some really great tracks on this album and like OP said it was raw and unpolished. Stoned is the way of the walk is one of favorite Cypress Hill songs on any album. I remember seeing them at my first concert. And I remember them rolling a giant statue of a hand holding a huge joint. It looked like it was lit and had smoke coming out of it. Then they broke into Stoned is the way of the walk. A wild memory and comically I had never smoked anything at that point but it just resonated for some reason.
jpcali7131@reddit
How Could I just Kill a Man literally changed east coast rap all the way from Cali. Hand on the Pump, Hole in the Head, Psychobeta Buckdown, Stoned is the Way of the Walk are all bangers. Break it up is a cool ass beat for interlude.
I love this album because it’s my first exposure to Cypress Hill. IMO the first 4 albums were certified classics and the rest isn’t quite on the level but I till like most of it.
Also B Real has some classic features and Muggs has made some great albums as a producer, especially the ones with GZA.
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
Yeah I remember when this album came out and I really thought it changed things too.
Also, I got to see B Real and Chuck D when they were touring as the Prophets of Rage with the members of RATM. It was great seeing the fusion of the groups.
jpcali7131@reddit
Awesome! I got to see Wu Tang and Rage together when I was in high school. It was fucking wild!!!
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
Mighty Mighty Bosstones and RATM are two bands that I regret seeing. I can only imagine how wild Wu Tang and RATM must have been.

Here's my Cypress Hill story. This is from about 15 years ago, 2007 or thereabouts.
I'm a computer tech, working in our basement workroom, doing a bunch of Mac laptop repairs. I've got my laptop open, with my whole iTunes library on shuffle, listening to a bunch of tunes. I've got all kinds of music: classical, folk, country, rock, indie, a little bit of jazz, and a little bit of rap.
My boss, who was as square and boring a man as you could imagine, had a habit of tunelessly humming to himself. So I hear this tuneless humming as he starts walking down the stairs.
At that very moment my iTunes library shuffles up Hits From the Bong, and of course it starts out:
DO YOU WANT TO GET HIGH? DOES EVERYBODY WANT TO GET HIIIIIIIIGH?
...I couldn't hit skip fast enough. Somehow my manager didn't hear, or he decided not to comment.
yinyangyingyang@reddit
Dj muggs at his best. Second half is fun and different.
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
He’s so fucking original. You know his sound right away and nobody can imitate it.
DarkMode54@reddit
Go see them live, now that you’re in your 40s. It’s fucking great.
IllusionKhajit@reddit
“Pigs” is a great song.
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
That’s exactly the track I needed to hear and then I just let the album play. Then how I could just kill a man came on 👍
HighMarshalSigismund@reddit
Temples of Boom and Black Friday are on permanent download on my phone. Sometimes you just need to hear Make a Move or Killa Hill Niggas to make your day.
NachoNachoDan@reddit (OP)
Pigs usually does it for me :)
