"I didn't mind when they had all the characters speaking modern American dialogue, with matching accents and perspectives, but I draw the line at skin colour in my viking themed, children's fictional fantasy movie based on a British kids book series."
the scandinavian languages still are similar to one another as they shared roots from the languages of vikings but you arent wrong in saying icelandic is the closest. nonethless i just picked a random close ancestor
It's probably more due to it being very obvious pandering and diversity quotas. We know it's not done for the character. We know it's not done because it makes sense. We know it's not done because that's how it would actually be.... otherwise, the cartoon would have established a diverse culture.
It's been shoehorned so much that it's become a glaring red flag. X# of characters have to be this, X# of characters have to be that. What's even worse is that maybe she is a good actor. Maybe she did deserve that role... but because so many other characters have been changed for diversity, she is also automatically flagged as a diversity change. Whether it was meant that way or not.
Hollywood or whoever is making movies these days do not know how to deal with diversity of people or culture. They do not know how to deal with presenting a "melting pot," peoples, but they still try to throw in a character that is very different from the rest of the characters, like its normal.
An all white tribe is on an island of dragons.... where did the one black chick come from? Was she adopted from another culture? Was she taken in a raid? It's a whole other story that won't at all be mentioned or explored since she is just a skin color change.
Humans are quite tribal, so even if we have no problem with people who are different from us, we still notice when people are different and ask questions.
You have literally no clue how many other nonwhite people are on the island. The movie isn't out yet. You're making up that she's the only one, because it's your backwards justification to complain about any nonwhite people being in the movie.
We know it's not done for the character
How? How do you know that? You've seen nothing of her performance. You know nothing about how she auditioned, how she captures the character. She could be incredible, she could be horrible- but you have absolutely no clue either way.
This is three long-ass paragraphs of you wildly trying to explain how it isn't a racial bias that you see a nonwhite person, and automatically assume that they don't deserve the role. And you can pretend that "oh, sometimes it's okay" except that you and people like you do this EVERY SINGLE TIME a nonwhite person is the lead in ANYTHING even tangentially connected to a franchise.
You scream "pandering" the second they show up, without any clue of how they're going to perform in the role, and then cry 'but we just want the right fit for the part!' All that you know about how she fits the part is that she isn't white, and to you, that evidently means she doesn't. Pretending otherwise is just hiding in your shame.
Have you seen the cartoon itself? If you're making an art referencing something, it's rude to spit on it and do changes while still saying " Look at me, I'm redoing this art for us"
Because black people existed at the time that the fantasy world is building off. Cars didn’t. If you think they’re the same you’re then you’re a moron.
If thematic consistency is broken just because someone has slightly darker skin than thats on you bro. You made that comparison fully aware that its very stupid
The issue is that we have a base understanding that the original movie was X, and historically speaking, vikings were also X, so to suddenly throw in Y, despite acting skills or what have you, is blatantly wrong on the most basic of levels. It's like if they made a live action snow white movie and made her Hispanic. It doesn't matter how good the acting is, she's not "snow white".
As a woman of color, I want to see other woc out there getting paid, getting screentime, and serving representation.
That being said, shoehorning does happen. But Hollywood has ALWAYS pandered. They’re just worse at it now - because it’s apparent that controversy is better marketing than marketing. And there’s ALWAYS been controversy surrounding media representation. Even the best examples have faced intense backlash. As a result, you have people on one side on the defensive - and you have people on the other calling it pandering. It’s gotten so blurred that you can’t tell who is calling it shoehorning because it’s bad representation, and who is calling it shoehorning because they feel some typa way seeing non-white people onscreen.
So stop caring. Stop doing their marketing for them for movies you don’t actually care about. Let them spend money on it for no one to talk about it and no one to see it. Because let’s be so fucking for real - where the fuck else have you seen anything about the Snow White movie besides arguments online? This is the first time I even hear about this one. We’re literally doing free labor.
I agree, and this is the first i am hearing about this movie, and you're probably right about marketing.
I would absolutely love to see more movies of stories of people of color, different cultures and ideas, different visuals. I'd love to see those people represented the way they want to be represented.... and the way they are. Not in a way that meets quotas and identity checklists. I want to see stories with characters that actually intermingle realistically, where characters of different cultures actually have different perspectives and agreements and disagreements and bring things to the table to share. I want them to have depth and reason. Not just 2D caricatures of people for the sake of having them. I also resent when white actors are put into a role that should be someone else just because it's some famous actor.
Honestly dude, if you make a viking film, you have to repsect the nordic origins of vikings. This is like putting a white guy into a movie about native americans
I dont think the argument is whether a random black girl should be added into this fantasy story, but the argument is about they decided to raceswap the casting of a previously existing cartoon.
This isnt even an isolated incident, theres been a long pattern of swapping these characters in animated childrens films. Just create new IP, then they can cast whoever they want.
Exactly. White people wearing kimonos or a Rastafarian hat is “cultural appropriation.” But having a black Little Mermaid, black Vikings, black Merlyn from King Arthur, black Queen of England, black Heimdall (who was literally known as the “Whitest of the Gods”)… all that is fine because “diversity n shit.” The list goes on and on and on… and it’s not even that they just race swap these characters too, but they’ve always got to have this fake “I’m black y’all” moment where they have to just shove it in people’s faces too. Or like the lame as fuck “girl power” scene in Endgame too. Just gotta really hammer it home for the audience to “look how diverse and accepting we are!”
Just create original characters in an original setting, and let the IP stand on its own two feet. Rather than trying to appropriate European culture.
Then make a new interpretation of the books instead of copying the animated one and changing it to be worse? The only thing I'm gonna think of while watching this is, why am I watching this instead of the original.? Same goes for all the other needlessly remade regurgitated slop.
i dont know why theyre remaking already made animated movies to begin with, might as well change the race then.
i dont see why changing a skinny guy into a fat guy is fine, and changing a cute green puppy into a big black dragon is fine, but chnaging a blonde into a black girl is
>OH MY GOD APPROPRIATION PERSECUTION
Agree with you on this tho.
>The only thing I'm gonna think of while watching this is, why am I watching this instead of the original.? Same goes for all the other needlessly remade regurgitated slop.
oh you mean the cartoon that was based on a far more based book where they made up the girl character and turned fishlegs into uber fatty? You know the cartoon that took a story about vikings who have always been best buddies with dragons and turned it into something about killing them but then not killing them and whatever? The cartoon that resembles the book in literally no way? Why arent you mad they didnt create a new cartoon instead of changing the book.
Its almost like you have the creative liscence to do whatever you want since its your project, and you should be judged on the overall quality instead of what color the actor is.
I understand your point, but the vast majority of people that know about this franchise, know about it because of the cartoon.
As an aside, translating a book into visual media is usually a much different process than just turning a cartoon into a live action. In the latter case, you already have established imagery to work with. Of course they have the creative license to do whatever they want, but sometimes they need to stop and ask whether they should.
I watched Agatha All Along recently which is a new disney show. In the 2nd ep they talk about needing to recruit a crew.
The first woman they recruit is an older white lady, the next member is a black woman. I turned to my partner at this moment and said ‘I bet you the next member they recruit will be asian’. And they were, of course.
Like you said it was glaringly obvious that they shoehorned in someone from each of the major skin colours lol.
The Golden Girls was Goddamn lighting in a bottle and don't ever fucking forget it. It was peak comedy television and should be an aspiration for any modern show.
It doesn't make sense in the lore, and it's inconsistent with the original movie and the books. They cast diversely to fill a 'quota', not because it fits the character, setting, or story. If it made sense by those I wouldn't care. maybe it'll even be good (it won't be), then I also won't care.
No one would be saying the same thing if someone made black panther black. “Sub-Saharan Africans aren’t black; they also don’t have magic superpowers and spaceships.”
They did cast black panther with someone that has a darker skin tone, as they should. It would be fucked up if they made black panther anything but the normal skin tone of middle Africans simply because it would be inaccurate. If they did anything else, it would just be capitalism trying to pander to people with lighter skin tones to make money.
You do realise that Black Panther is only really liked for being the black marvel superhero, right? That was all people talked about when the first one dropped. If that isn’t pandering to an audience based on the colour of their skin, then I don’t know what is.
It makes me think that too many folks subscribe to the ideology of racism. And, that there has been a concerted effort to normalize that ideology, and then capitalize off of it.
This is my biggest problem - why are people complaining about black characters in a kid’s animation about taming dragons?
Like dragons are no biggies but adding a black person and suddenly it’s unacceptable? We all know that one of those 2 aforementioned entities actually exists.
A huge part of black panthers character is that he’s African it’s literally not even close to the same thing and you’d have to be an idiot to think it is
Well no he’s South African and he’s white cuz that country was colonized and black and whites were segregated it was a pretty fucked time why the hell would wakada on like the total opposite side of Africa a total secluded nation have a white prince man.
You guys gotta use some critical thinking here and realize Astrid being black isn’t worth whining and being little bitches over get a job or a hobby that isn’t staring at Reddit.
No I was just fucking with you because it's funny. South African is still African. Mainly because last time I checked there isn't a country called Africa. It's a continent that encapsulates all of the African countries in Africa.
South Africa is definitely a country and does not encapsulate the entire country. Also yeah ur just fucking with me but ur also trying to make a valid argument at the same time while failing miserably.
No it's not an argument that I would even endorse I don't give a shit who plays who it's a fucking movie based off an animated series. If you think it's worth getting into an argument over that's on you. It was solely a joking comment and if you can't see that it sucks to suck. As much as I would love to hold your hand to explain what jokes are I do not have the time.
Such a bad faith argument, if the race matters to a characters identity it shouldn’t be changed, but if it doesn’t there really isn’t an issue…black panther being from an isolationist country in Africa can only be back because of the history of the character. Random love interest in a revamped Pixar movie w/an 8th of the history? Not the same
How is a random ass island with norse vikings on it NOT an isolationist country? Who's making a bad faith argument now?
"Can only be black because of the history of the character"
Ahh yes, Astrid from httyd has a very diverse race in her characters history. She's actually one of the better love interests in recent movies who can very well stand on her own feet as a character but if you really want to downplay a character to make your shitty argument seem better than go wild.
I’ve got bad news for you, but there are no real life white Vikings either, cus they are all dead. None of them are alive. So you couldn’t show me a real life white Viking, much less a real life Viking at all.
Idc, he’s a fake character anyways. I just care if the media itself is good. If the color of their skin is integral to the plot of the movie, then it might change my perception of the media. Most of the time, it doesn’t matter what the person looks like.
To be honest, the age where live action movies of these works sounded great has been over for a long time. Hollywood just doesn't get it, in fact, they fucked it up by making their offering really lackluster so people don't expect much.
How TF do you propose they change that though?? Gonma teach the entire cast Norse language? Would be based if real but I doubt any actor would sign on to that ngl.
I mean, they actually were. International traders, robbers, pillagers and diplomats tend to accrue a diverse set of characters to help them do their business. It would be way more likely to see a darker skinned person on a "viking" ship than it would be anywhere else in the most of western Europe.
Well, they were quite more diverse than most people would think...
With all the raiding, and abducting people from their homes as slaves ... And fucking the abducted woman...
So you can imagine magical healing having no impact at the civilisation at large, fantastical creatures, gods and demons, but not black people? Especially when fantasy mcguffins could make travel easier, eliminating the main reason they weren’t many foreigners of any kind in medieval Europe.
Are you smoking crack or have you not seen the demographics of Sweden coupled with the fact that the vast majority pre-modern people didnt tend to travel long distances.
So you are saying. That Swedish people are sexy because they stole all of England's sexy people, and English people are ugly because all their sexy people were stolen?
Vikings famously did travel long distances though. Not only did they make it all the way to North America, they formed the majority of the Varangian Guard in Byzantium.
Thats a cool history fact. Thanks for not reacting like a dickhead. Vikings are diverse, just the claim that theyre more so than modern day Scandinavians, not excluding non ethnic Scandinavians is just dumb.
Wait, wait, you're not supposed to tell them that the vikings famous for sailing around the globe from the american continent to the Middle East were not pure white aryan men!
black guy here, some geniuses in the black American community value ancestry alot and it's pretty tough to respect your ancestors when they were prisoners of war that eventually became slaves
so the cope started, black americans claimed their ancestors were Egyptian Pharoahs, original jews, native Americans and other wild shit so racists started mocking them and their accents by the phrase "we wuz kangz"
now anytime Hollywood raceswaps characters the meme is reused to fit the current scenario
the way I phrased it was pretty cringe but trust me I gain nothing from pretending to be black online, life would be so much easier if I wasn't lumped with "tyrones" everyday
It's because this is usually said by white guys who think they can fully understand or empathise with ethnic minority issues and challenges because they have a couple black friends.
It's also used by racists trying to say they are not racist.
if you always dress nice put on glasses and carry a briefcase, speak with a deep voice you will be called 'one of the good ones' what are you worried about.
I'm not worried about boomer grandpas who "don't see color" and retweet black pastors cursing biden
I'm worried about white male zoomers my age being so radicalized they hate me even if I haven't committed a crime in my life, go to any 4chan/Twitter nazi shithole and see the way they talk about us
im pretty sure if white people get racist at you its not going to because a black guy was in a dei role, its cause of the um. the uh. the ahem often doing the uh. and engaging in uh.
so yeah i wouldnt worry about dei too much. stop buying into the crap no one cares besides turbo online idiots.
the problem with the white male zoomers is that once they say the N word hard R to their friends a million times, actually meeting a black dude will trigger a tsunami of guilt, shame, and a general itchiness all over their hairline, so why would they even bother with black people at all?
you don't even have to go that far, just look at the instagram comments on any meme page. at least there its still inappropriate humour instead of blatant racism and social darwinism.
Which is fundamentally worthless because most people that are racist aren't really exposed to people like that. The people that know me, work with me or have interacted with me would think I'm "one of the good ones" without me having to pander to them.
Being viewed as "one of the good ones" by the people around me does nothing for me if the general sentiment is to kick a lot of people out that look like me and/or come from where I do. The "illegals" will continue flying under the radar, and declining the renewal of status and forcing people who actually contribute to society to leave, ironically leaves the people who want just the "good ones" with everyone but the "good ones".
It’s not hard to a knowledge the issues. When black kids make fun of other black kids for trying in school or if they speak English properly and say they’re “acting white” then some people will notice the problems with the culture.
There’s nothing wrong with having dark skin but black people themselves associate being a thug with blackness. If you don’t fuck with the gang lifestyle then you’re an Oreo.
..."I still have a dream, a dream deeply rooted in the American dream – one day this nation will rise up and live up to its creed, "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all black guy here are created equal." I have a dream...
Nah, it's based on American stereotypes over Viking culture so it has no base in Norwegian or danish culture anyway. Honestly it's just fantasy and thinking otherwise is kinda racist on its own.
I cannot understand why the same black people obsessed with ancestry somehow don’t get people of other ethnicities might want the same. It’s a film based on a Scottish island set somewhere in Scandinavia or Iceland - a region of the world which doesn’t see huge representation of their culture.
there's something else I forgot to mention, black people are at the top when it comes to poverty in America,
we don't own companies and there is no vote held on Hollywood casting. the decisions are made by white liberal execs and we take the racism and backlash
Would I be correct in thinking that putting black and brown women in traditionally white female roles, comes off as fucking weird and pandering?
Like I feel they're coping out by going "haha look, we put a black lady (never a dude??) in a movie with a buncha white folks :)" instead of focusing on bringing more original black fairytales into the mainstream, with completely/majorly black casts.
Princess and the Frog fucking slaps but thats one (1) black lead/casted princess movie out of like, all of them.
And, again, why are black men never swapped in lieu of white men? Why is it always a black female/white male kind of relationship?
I might be wrong because I don't watch live action remakes on account they are fucking terrible as a rule but that's what it feels like.
this is just a guess, but if I was a Hollywood exec in charge of making money and I HAD TO race swap a character i would 100% do female every time, men on average don't really care about representation and women are the ones who are more likely to relate themselves to characters based on appearance.
notice the "I HAD TO" part, because I honestly have no fucking clue why characters are raceswapped, maybe they have internal data showing that it brings in more revenue because of the discourse generated OR countries in the middle east/Asia buy more tickets.
I agree with you and stated that in another comment, black people are nowhere near the majority of Hollywood execs, white liberals pull this shit every year and leave us to get abused by racists when it wasn't even our fault
Lol I guarantee you films aren't made with representation in mind, they're there to make money like any other business. The evil liberals making race swapped movies is just a Boogeyman. At the end of the day it's a bunch of rich old white people laughing at everyone else counting the money.
The text is a variation of a common phrase, "we wuz kangs!", which is usually accompanied by a distorted image of a black dude. Usually meant to mock the idea that there is any kind of history or culture for black people to take pride in, purposefully misspelled in what I assume is how racist people think minorities talk
Original poster thinks the skin color of this actress is too dark, and is scared that minorities are stealing their glorious culture of dragon related animation
Maybe black people shouldn't be embarrassed of most of their ancestors being enslaved so much that they try to claim other cultures they have zero connection with, Egyptian demographics were pretty much the same as they are today
We need Black Panther played by a white guy, given the multiverse, he has to exist
It's racist humour, referencing to We was Egyptian and shit... which is belief predominant in black supremacy culture, about how the original people of Egypt, (one of the oldest civilisation) were black skin like most of Africa as well.
It's racist humour, referencing to We was Egyptian and shit... which is belief predominant in black supremacy culture, about how the original people of Egypt, (one of the oldest civilisation) were black skin like most of Africa as well.
First, that's not Zendaya, it's Nico Parker.
Second, I think it's a play on the old "We wuz kings" meme.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/we-wuz-kings
Third, it's a greentext response to another Hollywood race-swap.
They have done this like 100 times and you’ll always be able to come up for some justification for why this time it doesn’t matter. It’s weird and obvious pandering move every single time regardless of what property the race swapping is happening in
They have done it like 100 times and every single time it did not impact my life more than having tl watch people online complain about how it’s not accurate to [insert book or time period]. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it, vote with your wallet. But you know that won’t do anything because most people don’t give a shit, especially children who this movie is made for.
This one's DreamWorks not Disney though so it actually has a chance of being decent and the trailer makes it look like it'll be pretty accurate and faithful to the original movie.
The only bad thing I've heard so far is race swapping Astrid but honestly I've stopped caring about that stuff because they're just gonna keep doing it and sometimes it can be really funny like how Snow White now has skin as brown as mocha.
My favourite is how the Artemis Fowl movie took the character whose family has always served the main character's family and saw nothing wrong with making him black which implies their families' relationship started from slavery (and they also removed a big feminist empowering aspect for one of the protagonists when they cast a male character into a woman)
honestly it doesnt really matter, like in the movie they werent any specific type of viking they were just "viking" no one points at most of the adults having scottish accents as inaccurate. point being in the movies they were just general vikings and that was it
The fact that she’s black (for some reason) is not even the worst thing. She will most likely be unbearable character and a girl boss, to appeal to feminists, which will completely miss her character
Ah yes, another souless movie "remake" live adaption that literally nobody asked. No wonder of why so many people are saying that modern cinema has turned into shit
People arguing about ethnicity of characters in a kid show about vikings killing dragons, instead of focusing their hate on mid celebrities like zendaiya
Yes if you have more than one white main cast member you get massive tax penalties. Also straight white males who complain about the law online are executed by the military
I just don’t really care I never cared about her race when the I watched it as a kid and I still don’t now. Yeah it’s obviously pandering but literally everything is at this point. The fact that it’s a live action of an old movie is a cash grab/pandering. No one really asked for a live action in the first place.
I thought about the quote this is parodying literally 1 minute before opening reddit and now this is what i see. Someone or something is trying to gaslight me into thinking I can predict the future I swear. For those who don't know it's a parody of the phrase "We wuz kings n' shit" which i think comes from the black American community which means they used to be "the establishment" but now they're victims of the establishment.
Maybe don't get the phrases meaning from me....
Yeah, it's African-American black people blaming white people for the state of African-Americans in America, claiming that their ancestors were powerful, royal people in Africa.
In reality, their ancestors were vastly-most likely purchased from the neighboring tribes who defeated them in a tribal war and enslaved them, where their ancestors would've done the same to the neighboring tribe if they'd won. White Europeans coming to Africa were not going to run into the jungle with nets to capture black people. They wouldn't last a week. They traded goods for slaves.
Meanwhile, nowadays, African immigrants come to America and succeed wildly, so it doesn't seem to be being black that's holding back African-Americans.

Rednedredemption@reddit
Agree. Wtf cares who plays what role? The only real thing that matters is if they are a good actor or not.
Valalias@reddit
I agree, and this is the first i am hearing about this movie, and you're probably right about marketing.
I would absolutely love to see more movies of stories of people of color, different cultures and ideas, different visuals. I'd love to see those people represented the way they want to be represented.... and the way they are. Not in a way that meets quotas and identity checklists. I want to see stories with characters that actually intermingle realistically, where characters of different cultures actually have different perspectives and agreements and disagreements and bring things to the table to share. I want them to have depth and reason. Not just 2D caricatures of people for the sake of having them. I also resent when white actors are put into a role that should be someone else just because it's some famous actor.
ihatemalkoun@reddit
lol who cares, if they can kill dragons they can cast some random black girl idgaf.
Jonthux@reddit
Honestly dude, if you make a viking film, you have to repsect the nordic origins of vikings. This is like putting a white guy into a movie about native americans
WhyAmIToxic@reddit
I dont think the argument is whether a random black girl should be added into this fantasy story, but the argument is about they decided to raceswap the casting of a previously existing cartoon.
This isnt even an isolated incident, theres been a long pattern of swapping these characters in animated childrens films. Just create new IP, then they can cast whoever they want.
wuvybear@reddit
Rather than trying to appropriate European culture.
ihatemalkoun@reddit
great but the cartoon movie was based entirly on a book that changed a bunch of stuff about it instead of
>create original characters in an original setting, and let the IP stand on its own two feet
MasterofLego@reddit
Then make a new interpretation of the books instead of copying the animated one and changing it to be worse? The only thing I'm gonna think of while watching this is, why am I watching this instead of the original.? Same goes for all the other needlessly remade regurgitated slop.
ihatemalkoun@reddit
i dont know why theyre remaking already made animated movies to begin with, might as well change the race then.
i dont see why changing a skinny guy into a fat guy is fine, and changing a cute green puppy into a big black dragon is fine, but chnaging a blonde into a black girl is
>OH MY GOD APPROPRIATION PERSECUTION
Agree with you on this tho.
>The only thing I'm gonna think of while watching this is, why am I watching this instead of the original.? Same goes for all the other needlessly remade regurgitated slop.
MasterofLego@reddit
It's fair that the HTTYD movies are not an accurate adaptation of the books
ihatemalkoun@reddit
oh you mean the cartoon that was based on a far more based book where they made up the girl character and turned fishlegs into uber fatty? You know the cartoon that took a story about vikings who have always been best buddies with dragons and turned it into something about killing them but then not killing them and whatever? The cartoon that resembles the book in literally no way? Why arent you mad they didnt create a new cartoon instead of changing the book.
Its almost like you have the creative liscence to do whatever you want since its your project, and you should be judged on the overall quality instead of what color the actor is.
WhyAmIToxic@reddit
I understand your point, but the vast majority of people that know about this franchise, know about it because of the cartoon.
As an aside, translating a book into visual media is usually a much different process than just turning a cartoon into a live action. In the latter case, you already have established imagery to work with. Of course they have the creative license to do whatever they want, but sometimes they need to stop and ask whether they should.
donkey100100@reddit
I watched Agatha All Along recently which is a new disney show. In the 2nd ep they talk about needing to recruit a crew.
The first woman they recruit is an older white lady, the next member is a black woman. I turned to my partner at this moment and said ‘I bet you the next member they recruit will be asian’. And they were, of course.
Like you said it was glaringly obvious that they shoehorned in someone from each of the major skin colours lol.
GoodGuyScott@reddit
But imagine if they were all just old white ladies, itd be like watching the Golden Girls lol.

The Golden Girls was Goddamn lighting in a bottle and don't ever fucking forget it. It was peak comedy television and should be an aspiration for any modern show.
BenStegel@reddit
It’s about Vikings taming dragons bro, you’re not meant to think about the genetic lineage of the characters.
MasterofLego@reddit
It doesn't make sense in the lore, and it's inconsistent with the original movie and the books. They cast diversely to fill a 'quota', not because it fits the character, setting, or story. If it made sense by those I wouldn't care. maybe it'll even be good (it won't be), then I also won't care.

Confused_Crab_@reddit
No one would be saying the same thing if someone made black panther black. “Sub-Saharan Africans aren’t black; they also don’t have magic superpowers and spaceships.”
Ubermenschisch@reddit
They did cast black panther with someone that has a darker skin tone, as they should. It would be fucked up if they made black panther anything but the normal skin tone of middle Africans simply because it would be inaccurate. If they did anything else, it would just be capitalism trying to pander to people with lighter skin tones to make money.
Confused_Crab_@reddit
You do realise that Black Panther is only really liked for being the black marvel superhero, right? That was all people talked about when the first one dropped. If that isn’t pandering to an audience based on the colour of their skin, then I don’t know what is.
MasterofLego@reddit
Makes you think, huh..

It makes me think that too many folks subscribe to the ideology of racism. And, that there has been a concerted effort to normalize that ideology, and then capitalize off of it.

Nonstopshooter21@reddit
No I was just fucking with you because it's funny. South African is still African. Mainly because last time I checked there isn't a country called Africa. It's a continent that encapsulates all of the African countries in Africa.
TON-OF-CLAY0429@reddit
South Africa is definitely a country and does not encapsulate the entire country. Also yeah ur just fucking with me but ur also trying to make a valid argument at the same time while failing miserably.
Don’t half ass it man don’t be a pussy.
Nonstopshooter21@reddit
No it's not an argument that I would even endorse I don't give a shit who plays who it's a fucking movie based off an animated series. As much as I would love to hold your hand to explain what jokes are I do not have the time.
Shadowasders23@reddit
Such a bad faith argument, if the race matters to a characters identity it shouldn’t be changed, but if it doesn’t there really isn’t an issue…black panther being from an isolationist country in Africa can only be back because of the history of the character. Random love interest in a revamped Pixar movie w/an 8th of the history? Not the same
Downvote awwy
Jonthux@reddit
See defending wakanda is ok because they are african, but defending vikings isnt because they are white people

TheBeastlyStud@reddit
How is a random ass island with norse vikings on it NOT an isolationist country? Who's making a bad faith argument now?
"Can only be black because of the history of the character" Ahh yes, Astrid from httyd has a very diverse race in her characters history. She's actually one of the better love interests in recent movies who can very well stand on her own feet as a character but if you really want to downplay a character to make your shitty argument seem better than go wild.

Idc, he’s a fake character anyways. I just care if the media itself is good. If the color of their skin is integral to the plot of the movie, then it might change my perception of the media. Most of the time, it doesn’t matter what the person looks like.

Sieg_Force@reddit
I mean, they actually were. International traders, robbers, pillagers and diplomats tend to accrue a diverse set of characters to help them do their business. It would be way more likely to see a darker skinned person on a "viking" ship than it would be anywhere else in the most of western Europe.

black guy here, some geniuses in the black American community value ancestry alot and it's pretty tough to respect your ancestors when they were prisoners of war that eventually became slaves
so the cope started, black americans claimed their ancestors were Egyptian Pharoahs, original jews, native Americans and other wild shit so racists started mocking them and their accents by the phrase "we wuz kangz"
now anytime Hollywood raceswaps characters the meme is reused to fit the current scenario

darklightmatter@reddit
Which is fundamentally worthless because most people that are racist aren't really exposed to people like that. The people that know me, work with me or have interacted with me would think I'm "one of the good ones" without me having to pander to them.
Being viewed as "one of the good ones" by the people around me does nothing for me if the general sentiment is to kick a lot of people out that look like me and/or come from where I do. The "illegals" will continue flying under the radar, and declining the renewal of status and forcing people who actually contribute to society to leave, ironically leaves the people who want just the "good ones" with everyone but the "good ones".

Why is it always a black female/white male kind of relationship?

notice the "I HAD TO" part, because I honestly have no fucking clue why characters are raceswapped, maybe they have internal data showing that it brings in more revenue because of the discourse generated OR countries in the middle east/Asia buy more tickets.

I think OP meant to say they're just glad it's not Zendaya
Nebula_Pete@reddit
It's not Zendaya. It's Niko Parker, Thandiwe Newton's daughter.
breakfasteveryday@reddit
lol I thought that was a typo
ipunchdogs@reddit
It's not. If this was a few years ago op would've been shamed to hell for making a grammar mistake.
ElGorudo@reddit
She's not
Deletesystemtf2@reddit
She is, she’s in that border watch game, all the young ones love it
Liftmeup-putmedown@reddit
Anon pretends to care about the live action remake of a decade old animated movie.
FB-22@reddit
They have done this like 100 times and you’ll always be able to come up for some justification for why this time it doesn’t matter. It’s weird and obvious pandering move every single time regardless of what property the race swapping is happening in
RedBallXPress@reddit
They do it because people like you keep posting about it and giving them free advertising.
degenerate661@reddit
Truly breathtaking take
FB-22@reddit
Genius take. I’m sure my comment on r/greentext will drive huge traffic to the theater
hein-e@reddit
They have done it like 100 times and every single time it did not impact my life more than having tl watch people online complain about how it’s not accurate to [insert book or time period]. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it, vote with your wallet. But you know that won’t do anything because most people don’t give a shit, especially children who this movie is made for.
_inveniam_viam@reddit
Holy shit who the fuck cares? Out of all the things to be mad about, this is what people want focus on? NEET YTs are something else. Lmfao.
Emchomana@reddit
The only time you all ever care about pandering is when you’re not the ones being pandered to.
InfinityLDog@reddit
My main annoyance is with the casting of the twins. They're supposed to be two halves of a whole, it looks like she ate his half too.
Wilczek_7@reddit
Ain't no way Hiccup is falling for her
MurrmorMeerkat@reddit
am i crazy or does the girl look more white than black why are you all crying so hard?
Megtalallak@reddit
I don't even care about weird race ideologies, I am just so fucking tired of Zendaya...
SlowAsFuckBoiiiiii@reddit
Why tf does anyone care about these live action remakes anyway, they are almost ALWAYS complete garbage that underperform
ConnorOfAstora@reddit
Gossamare@reddit
Damn did Astrid get cooked by a dragon?
mundanechimp5@reddit
honestly it doesnt really matter, like in the movie they werent any specific type of viking they were just "viking" no one points at most of the adults having scottish accents as inaccurate. point being in the movies they were just general vikings and that was it
Jonthux@reddit
Because them speaking norwegian would be a major turnoff for 99% of english speaking audiences
Also, general vikings. So white people
_Addi-the-Hun_@reddit
Thats alive black woman? U guys are going insane

Greta Thunberg would be the best for the role.

The fact that she’s black (for some reason) is not even the worst thing. She will most likely be unbearable character and a girl boss, to appeal to feminists, which will completely miss her character
BilltheThreat_@reddit
Ah yes, another souless movie "remake" live adaption that literally nobody asked. No wonder of why so many people are saying that modern cinema has turned into shit
Runeick@reddit
I for one do not care. Hiccup should be Steven Yeun.
SoppingAlmonds@reddit
Ym Niko Parker?
TheZanzibarMan@reddit
I'm sure this comment section is going to be nothing but positive...
Well shit...
Quitthesht@reddit
I wonder if the Astrid autist is gonna commission any fucked up art of this version of her too or not.

Not American here, is it true that you gave laws that make it so that they have to have black characters in movies?
delamerica93@reddit
no lmao are you serious?
Darkdragon3110525@reddit
Yes if you have more than one white main cast member you get massive tax penalties. Also straight white males who complain about the law online are executed by the military
Thin-Sand-2389@reddit
No because that would be illegal they do it for wider appeal to audiences ie putting hispanic representation in a movie to get them to watch it
HowtoCrackanegg@reddit
Anons complaining about a fantasy viking movie, pathetic.
some_dude5@reddit
Anyone who gives a single shit about this movie is pathetic

Lily Rader's face would fit perfectly for that role. Just her face though.
Appropriate_Pop4968@reddit
Making this movie live action is so unnecessary. We are truly past the golden age of broadcast media.
Scarab_Kisser@reddit
blackwashing
Affectionate-Rise-69@reddit

Mitchel-256@reddit
Yeah, it's African-American black people blaming white people for the state of African-Americans in America, claiming that their ancestors were powerful, royal people in Africa.
In reality, their ancestors were vastly-most likely purchased from the neighboring tribes who defeated them in a tribal war and enslaved them, where their ancestors would've done the same to the neighboring tribe if they'd won. White Europeans coming to Africa were not going to run into the jungle with nets to capture black people. They wouldn't last a week. They traded goods for slaves.
Meanwhile, nowadays, African immigrants come to America and succeed wildly, so it doesn't seem to be being black that's holding back African-Americans.
coombuyah26@reddit
Let this fuel your schizophrenia
JoshuaLukacs1@reddit
I wasn't gonna watch it anyways because it'll probably just be a lesser version of the original CGI film so this casting doesn't really affect me lol.
BazzBun@reddit
I’m guessing she’s going to be an edgy teenager in this movie too?
throwtheclownaway20@reddit
What's funny is she's actually more white than black, LOL
