Why would my transaction in Lidl show up as a local hotel chain on my bank statement when paid by card?

I’m baffled. It appeared straight after the transaction. For the same amount of money, though instead of the usual name Lidl on my money out list it had the name of a local hotel.

Is it on your actual bank statement or in some app like Wallet? Because that uses your position to guess where you shopped and in the iOS button there’s a button to report an incorrect merchant.

This! I used to go to a basement club in London and would wake up to multiple transactions at ‘tower of London’ because the app couldn’t work out my actual location

Is the hotel nearby and did you use Apple Pay by any chance?
There was / maybe still is some lazy GPS bug with merchants being too close together and the name on the transaction being incorrect.
I used to get a couple calls a month from store managers worried that their customers hadn’t paid for their goods
Pretty sure it was just an Apple thing, though.

If it’s Monzo, it does it to me often showing random places trying to pick up location. If not, then good luck explaining the big secret hotel payment.

I get the same with my local coop showing as Costa in the same building… it corrects when it actually posts. All I can think is it’s taking postcode or something and doing some weird fuzzy matching instead of just taking the actual merchant name but I could be spouting nonsense…!

I once had a PayByPhone parking charge appear on my account as KFC. My only guess as to why is the reference number had the letters KFC in the mix of numbers and letters so thats what the bank recognised.

Come up with a better excuse next time. Or pay cash for fucks sake. If you’re the girlfriend seeing this he’s cheating. Banks don’t make this kind of mistake, it would destroy them.

State of this and comment sections in general. At least I know where to come if I do actually need help with a cover story, because you all seem pretty clued up 😂😂😂

Uh oh

Sounds like a coverup for some covert shagging if you ask me

He needs to try a Lidl harder next time.

“Look, I even asked on Reddit after it showed up!”

“Don’t look at the comments though…”

I'd ring the bank and get them to check. If the money did go to the hotel by their records you should be able to report it and get the money back given that you didn't visit the hotel or purchase anything from there. Free Lidl shop 🤷♂️
