Considering job offer in Hong Kong

Hello! I'm an expat from Southern Europe living in Scandinavia, where I did my master's in Public Health. I got a job offer to work for 1 year as a researcher at the University of Hong Kong (which is in the world's top 20 unis in my field), with the opportunity to make it a PhD if everything works well. The pay is fine and the topic is exactly what I would like to focus my career on so it would be a great opportunity to get some good experience, regardless of whether or not I will continue with my PhD there or elsewhere.
I have visited Hong Kong and I liked it a lot, but it seems like people have different opinions on how life actually is, especially regarding politics and the government (but I guess that is happening in a lot of places). So, strangers of Reddit, what do you think? Would anyone living there care to share some insights? Will this work experience be well-regarded by future employees?
Thanks :)

A one year gig in Hong Kong for okay money, in a top university, in exactly the field you want to be in? Sounds like a no brainer to me regardless of the political climate it’s not like the security services in Hong Kong are going to mess with a foreigner for no reason.
