Who has a bunch of duct tape just lying around on an airplane?

Quick sidebar…
79 years old?! Is there not a retirement cut off for flight attendants? There for the safety of passengers, I have a hard time believing she could even open the door if she wanted to.
ohwhataday10@reddit
I’m more like a 79 year old can’t enjoy his elder years in our country? Sad!
gizmo1024@reddit
Maybe she uses it for the flight benefits to go see her boyfriends around the world.
thepr3tty-wreckless@reddit
There are retiree flight benefits. AKA she’s not still working just to fly to see “her boyfriends.”
Panaka@reddit
I'd bet money that the medical benefits are part of the equation.
I work in aviation and I have a couple of coworkers pushing 70 that don't plan on retiring anytime soon. With our work rules they largely can give away most of their work and retain just enough to keep their medical benefits. One of these people comes in once every 90 days to retain their currency, while others will normally make an appearance a couple of days a month.
If I can't retire at 55, I'll probably do the same.
FlightyTwilighty@reddit
I noticed that too. I just hope it's because she enjoys her job and wants to keep working and not that she HAS to for whatever reason.
gizmo1024@reddit
Big one I’ve heard over the years is the medical benefits, especially at that age.
boyyouguysaredumb@reddit
people have medicare at that age though lol
shanezat@reddit
Exactly why some choose to keep working. Medicare may be better when you need it, but it isn’t currently a great option for many.
WorkerEfficient7059@reddit
16 tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt St. Peter, don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store
gizmo1024@reddit
If you see me comin’, better step aside…
Routine-Serve-8651@reddit
We can’t afford to retire, son
gizmo1024@reddit
I hear that. Hope you guys get your contract, you deserve it more than anyone.
Foggl3@reddit
I think they did a few months ago
UbiquitousUbiquity@reddit
they did.
Mnudge@reddit
I know a 76 year old dude who used to be a deadliest catch guy before it was a show.
He recently climbed up and down a zig zag vertical ladder on a cliffside, 150 foot drop, carrying a 60 lb bag of concrete on his shoulder with a belaying rope and a hard hat.
I couldn’t do it. Could you?
MiaLossen@reddit
I used to work for an airline and I had a coworker who retired for little while and then came back because they got bored at home. It’s usually that ir they simply can’t afford to retire.
Agile_Definition_415@reddit
They have annual medical and training requirements.
If the FAA says she's good I'm cool with it.
fuqsfunny@reddit
They don't have medical requirements. Other than to be basically ambulatory.
Training yes.
There is no mandatory retirement age.
kimchiking2021@reddit
There was a CNBC or whatever MSN article today talked about a 61 yo flight starting to plan for retirement.
CryptoM4dness@reddit
I read an article a little while back about how more elderly people are getting jobs at the airport for cheap flights around the nation. I guess people who hadn’t got a chance to see the world are getting it in their golden age. Heck I might do the same thing when I’m in my 70s.
findquasar@reddit
Nope. They pass recurrent, they can keep working.
vswr@reddit
Letting him struggle to try and open the door would have provided some entertainment. The doors open inward and the pressure pushes outward. At 8psi pressure differential on a 6'x3' door, that's over 800 pounds pushing on the door.
TL;DR: at typical cruising altitude, the doors aren't opening
alec777x@reddit
You would need around 27 thousand pounds of force to open a door
biaggio@reddit
Yeah, I know that, but I bet the sight of a guy struggling with the door would upset a lot of passengers.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
even more than that

Ok-Bid1774@reddit
Looks like the two guys on the right got knocked around a bit.
The-Purple-Church@reddit
Where’d they get the duct tape?
Cameron--@reddit
It’s protocol for these events. They likely have a designated compartment where it can be found regardless of which plane you happen to be working on that day.
dxtos@reddit
I assume a passenger offered.
packetm0nkey@reddit
Was on a flight last week when the captain announced prepare for landing and a lady grabbed her bag and headed to the front trying to get off.
She was not amused when shown back her seat.
UpstairsAdmirable927@reddit
I was on this flight and have to say that the dude was actually super nice and people way over-reacted. It sucks how polarized this country has become 💔
John_Palomino@reddit
Your name on Reddit says “Death2America” and you’re upset how polarized this country has become…
UpstairsAdmirable927@reddit
I see you can’t respect someone with a differing perspective.
naazzttyy@reddit
“I don’t understand why the other 299 passengers reacted in such a strongly negative manner when they realized their lives were placed at risk by someone having a mental breakdown. I blame politics for them restraining the guy.”
UpstairsAdmirable927@reddit
You weren’t there so you wouldn’t really know how it unfolded
michaelmedellin@reddit
it isn't obvious that passengers and the flight attendants over reacted, care to elaborate?
HaloGuy381@reddit
My best guess is that it’s more or less impossible to open the door in flight. The way the mechanisms line up, someone would have to overpower the pressure differential on the door’s surface area between the cabin air pressure and the pressure outside, which is far more force than anyone can realistically generate on their own (unless this man happens to be the Hulk, in which case we have bigger problems and duct tape wouldn’t solve them). So technically, yeah, I guess it’s overreacting because it won’t do anything, a bit like how you don’t punch out a kid for attacking you with a rubber knife because they can’t actually hurt you despite the obviously violent intent.
However, this bit is -not- by any means universally known to passengers, so panic would be understandable. Additionally, while opening the door is not feasible, damaging it might well be possible depending on what he has on his person, especially as TSA is famously unreliable at catching everything, and sufficient damage -could- cause problems with the door -or- compromise the seal and cause a loss of cabin pressure, which would definitely be hazardous for all on board.
As for the man doing it, none of the motives are great. Either he’s suicidal and totally okay with killing hundreds on board with his intended method (never mind he won’t succeed), he’s severely mentally ill to the point of a danger to himself or others, he’s irrationally angry and wanting to destroy something, or he’s a wannabe terrorist. All four of those are valid reasons to restrain someone while trapped in a tube miles in the sky.
No rational, stable person tries to force open a plane door in flight. The very act of trying is suspect on its own.

No, you weren't.

Tell me more, tell me more ‘Cause he sounds like a drag

Republicans and Democrats can agree on one thing: mess with the airplane during a flight and you’re gonna catch a beating.

reserved_seating@reddit
Over reacted to someone trying to open the plane door? Hmm
jsmeeker@reddit
nice retro stock photo there.
Tourist_Careless@reddit
Believe it or not thats actually a new plane. American has a small fleet of aircraft that are painted in various retro livery. Both from Americans past and some classic airlines it merged with.
PRcolor@reddit
There is one with the retro livery flying around but it’s a 737. The one in the picture is a Boeing 767 which is a fleet type that is retired so the picture is an old one.
bioskope@reddit
Wait? It's a 767? To my eyes the plane in the posted article looked like a 737 MAX. The split scimitar wings + the 'narrower' looking fuselage was what made me think that. Plus all the AA 767s I've seen have only had the blended winglets. Of course I'm still new to planespotting so I could be completely wrong.
Cowsmoke@reddit
The actual article photo is a MAX but the thumbnail that is a old 767
bioskope@reddit
Ahh ok. Still on Old Reddit.

jsmeeker@reddit
It's cool they got a retro LUS plane in the background too. Maybe staged ?
OverthinkingAnything@reddit
It's an old photo. The airplane in the foreground is of a type that doesn't have retro livery.
gster3000@reddit
This is wild! At least they made it to the destination on time :)
certainlyunpleasant@reddit
You can never be too careful with altitude sickness. One time this broad chewed through the fuselage of a 747!
BigERaider@reddit
Glad they got duck tape on all flights now
boyyouguysaredumb@reddit
duct*
ImReflexess@reddit
Those poor ducks
rettori@reddit
I know… crouching all the time as you walk through the cabin is hard.
bunby_heli@reddit
Where'd all the sky marshals go after 9/11?
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
they still exist, but they've never been very numerous compared to how many flights there are per day in the US
Critical_Thinker_81@reddit
I believe we all should receive training at the high school to deal as a team with these fuckers I am pretty sure only real idiots would decide to pull this shit knowing we all would defend as a group
Unfortunately we don’t act as a community and are singled out and our way of thinking is:
If this doesn’t affect me then I am fine, until I am not
gapeyx@reddit
Lol
GurrenLagann214@reddit
Hilfe Hilfe!
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
The flight attendant was 79! I would never think to have duct tape in my carry on.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
I kinda feel bad for these people, they’re clearly off their rockers. I can imagine they feel a ton of embarrassment once they’re lucid. Hope he gets whatever help he needs.
Look_b4_jumping@reddit
Agree.
