Decided to go easy and basic ss a first timer with a 5.3 Vortec.
Found a 5.3 vortex with 4l60e, harness and ecu for 500 from a 05 Tahoe.
Tranny was "rebuilt" but owneer says it didn't want to drive in his 80s truck.
Gamble and drive 1h39 or keep looking? Not looking for 700+ hp. Just something fun.
Going what the community says. 243/ls6 intake.

What is that lovely insulation you have on your walls there?

That’s a pretty good deal to get all that for $500. Either the guy just wants to get rid of it quick or something is wrong with it. I’d definitely check the fluids, find out if it was stored properly, take a borescope with you if you’ve got one and look in the cylinders. While the plugs are out, see if you can rotate the crankshaft to make sure it’s not seized. If the transmission fluid doesn’t smell burnt and is still red then you should be fine. My Silverado went 300k before the transmission went out, the engine still runs great. I probably pulled heavier loads than I should have though 😬

Hmm, pull the dip stick on the trans and take a quick sniff. If it smells burnt, I would move on. Also, take a rachet and make sure the engine spins
However, 500 bucks for a complete drive train is pretty good

Ima go beyond inspecting this engine if I'm driving that far. Any suggestions? Especially for tranny

Just check the transmission fluid color. Bright red is good. Brown or black fluid means dirty fluid. If clutches are bad, the smell of clutch material is pretty overwhelming, very noticeable if really bad.

Dont do it to yourself.

Pass then? What should I go for then?

That's a hard pass for me. I've gambled and lost many times more than I've ever won.
