Is my ex entitled to the rental deposit 3 years after we broke up?

I started renting a property with my ex 7 years ago and we broke up 3 years ago I moved out about a month ago and now my ex is asking me for the half of the deposit back. Is she entitled to it or can I tell her to do one?

Who paid for the deposit originally?

The fact you’ve left out whether or not she paid half of the deposit is funny because you already know the right thing morally is to give her it back. Legally she can come after it 100%.

Legally you should go ask the legal advice subreddit.
Morally you should give her back the same proportion of the total you got back that she paid.

The legal advice will be that she could take it to small claims and then it would depend on the evidence submitted.
OP should just pay her her portion unless he wants to be a dick and quite likely still have to pay it.

Whoever's name is registered with the DPS is who it belongs to. Had the reverse of this this year with my ex after I stayed in our old rental for years afterwards (deposit in her name). Naturally I just made sure to leave a deposits-worth of mess behind.

If they paid half, then yes
McDeathUK@reddit
Morally yes, legally probably not unless she has proof. However as you admit she paid half don’t be a tool and just give her the money

You'd do better asking on r/LegalAdviceUK - lot of helpful folk on there who know what they're talking about.

Did she pay money towards the deposit and was the deposit returned?
If the answer to both is yes, then she is entitled to have what she paid returned
Voodoopulse@reddit
Is half of the money hers? If it is you should give it to her
Praetorian_1975@reddit
Did she pay half the deposit, then yes she’s entitled to it. If she didn’t then she can do one
