Is it normal for all inclusive hotel to scan my room card every time I dine / get a drink?

I’m in Spain at the moment and every time I have a drink or go to one of the restaurants here, they take my room card and scan it. Is this normal? I’m all inclusive but also an overthinker - they aren’t gonna charge me for any additional expenses are they?

Only once, but that's because non-guests could come dine, use the marina etc at that location. You are indeed overthinking it, now relax and get another cocktail ;)

Probably just so they have track of what people eat and drink. Information is useful.

Both this and the “not everyone is all inclusive” answers are correct.

Agreed, so many industries and sectors just wouldn’t exist without data collection and insight, to the extent that data now has a price tag and there are laws governing its use
JustUseDuckTape@reddit
Yeah, this is a big one. They need to know what the average all-inclusive guest consumes so they can price the package accordingly. Can't just divide the food/drink evenly among guests as the all-inclusive ones probably have more.
zzkj@reddit
Yes it's normal everywhere. It's for tracking, accounting and stock control. You'll get a zero bill at the end.

How else are they going to confirm you are entitled to your food and drink and not just someone who has walked in the front door and looking to blag a meal and drinks.

Totally normal. It’s not uncommon in Spain for people who aren’t actually staying at a hotel to go for a drink in the bar, or to use the pool. (Probably more common in some parts than others, but where I was raised in the Balearics it was done a lot and nobody cared, and it was still common there, and in parts of Catalunya, when I last went home in 2018.) All-inclusives are probably a bit more strict about it, hence the scanning your card. If there is anything that isn’t included, you should be notified of that when you order, and asked if you still want it.

I had this at an all Inclusive in Cyprus, we didn't scan room cards but we had to provide them with room number. It was a new hotel so I guessed it was to track how much the average person/family consumed.
Comfortable--Box@reddit
Yeah I have been to a few all inclusive where they scan your card, I assumed it was to verify you were a current guest
TPenny5071@reddit
There will be guests that didn’t pay for the all inclusive, they’re using your room card to check/ proof that you’re an inclusive guest. Most places used wristbands though. (Remembering from childhood trip to Spain) we gave our wristbands to another family when we left, they were really happy, room cards are a lot less likely to be swapped around.
Flaky-Delivery5417@reddit
Yes. Potentially not everyone is all inclusive and it'll tell them who needs to pay. Likely also using it for data to identify how much stuff they're using at the bar or whatever.
ChuckStone@reddit
Yes.
Not everyone in your hotel is all- inclusive.
Sometimes they use wristbands instead.
add799@reddit
Yeah that's normal - I worked at the Four Seasons for around a year, and any guests that had breakfast or any other inclusions in their stay was deducted from the bill on checkout. The reason they'll be taking/checking your room card is cause not all guests will have any or the same inclusions most likely, so that they can track that everyone is getting what they've paid for essentially.
AnTeallach1062@reddit
I would probably ask at reception.
It could simply be that it provides the hotel staff with confirmation that you are a current guest; and that the vodka wasn't drunk by the barman.
