ULPT: Being Harassed Parking Legally as a Guest
Posted by mjcunninghamster86@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 53 comments
I've been going over to my girlfriend's apartment and recently they started to put tow notices on my car because they say it's there too often. I leave for work all the time and I'm never there longer than what is in their rental agreement for what guests are allowed to stay. Yesterday I showed up and my car had a tow notice on it saying that I was parked illegally and that I was not in a correct spot. The parking lot has about 50 Open spaces so I'm not taking up a spot that a resident really needs and couldn't be able to get into their apartment. Any ideas on how I could address this?

Rig your car so it blows up if someone touches your windshield. We'll, last resort ,I guess.

This is why I love this sub

park on the street
Remarkable_Bar_8592@reddit
This is the most logical answer. You do not need to park in the complex designated parking.
mjcunninghamster86@reddit (OP)
Small town, no street parking after 11pm
Downtown-Analyst@reddit
Is there anyone in the leasing office after 8pm ish? What time do you park? Roughly what time do the notices appear? What I’m getting at is, who would be in the office to care?
Dark_Tony_Shalhoub@reddit
Idk if it’s the same for OP but when I lived in apartments they hired security to periodically check the lots out for illegal activity or anything that violates the renter’s agreements during off hours

Sell car. Get a bike.
Hot-Win2571@reddit
What is the lease's phrasing for visitors? Maybe you're misinterpreting something about daily parking as being about hourly parking.
flannelheart@reddit
ELPT: Send a certified copy of the portion of the rental agreement that details how many nights guests are allowed to stay (and any relevant information regarding parking), as well as an itemized list of the days that you have stayed. Include a letter that states you will sue for damages if your car is towed without cause, including lost wages and any other incidental charges and attorney fees. I think at this point you need to be in "cover your ass" mode. Judges (as well as as attorneys that work on contingency) love detailed records when it comes to things like this. Dates/times/exact parking spot/etc. Will all work in your favor if you do have to go to court.
YourPeePaw@reddit
No one is dealing with anything like this on a contingency.
Hot-Win2571@reddit
For good contingency value, offer the lawyer a percentage of use of a sweet parking spot.
flannelheart@reddit
My thumbs may have gotten a little ahead of me on that. This would likely be a small claims court issue.
dumblederp6@reddit
Unethically, stand over the person giving the notice. Say you'll "sort them out" if they don't "pull their head in".
Ethically, see if you can rent an unused spot from a resident for a small fee.
hairy_muff_muncher@reddit
This is something that can easily be solved with a conversation. Is there a management office or something? Just go in there, find the manager, and start screaming at them and acting crazy. Problem solved
mjcunninghamster86@reddit (OP)
I've tried and the person on site just refers you to corporate, which is a person's cellphone number who lives in a different state. This is why I'm trying the unethical route now .
sitheandroid@reddit
But are you taking up a resident's spot rather than an open space? Because if you are, that might be where the problem lies.
mjcunninghamster86@reddit (OP)
No, there are currently 30 open spaces and I park the farthest away possible so that I don't take anything up close and there are no designated visitor parking spaces unfortunately.

First, buy a mask to conceal your identity. Next, park next to a bush at the apartment complex. Hide behind the bush with your mask on until someone from the landlord's office starts putting a notice on your vehicle. At that time, jump out from behind the bush and spray them with liquid ass.
borobricks@reddit
From a can or home made?
bumblebeedriverrr@reddit
Task failed succesfully. Accidentaly shat on them.
Wildcat_Dunks@reddit
I read the ingredients list on my can of liquid ass and it says "pure shat, not from concentrate".
borobricks@reddit
Sounds like it’s not accidental
Wildcat_Dunks@reddit
Hit him with all three barrels simultaneously, two cans and home made.

Aged is better

Get a large magnetic business logo placard for a fictional towing service made. Be sure to include the “Double penalties for apartment complexes!” statement on it somewhere. Post on driver and passenger doors. When they call, go move your car.

Set off a few cases of expanding foam in their offices.
Wide-Entrepreneur-35@reddit
Find another apartment. Hopefully one not owned by a faceless corporation. Good luck.
emax4@reddit
How does that work? Either he parks at a different apartment complex farther away? He tells his gf to get a new apartment because he's inconvenienced?
Wide-Entrepreneur-35@reddit
Like it or not, the courts are in bed with corporate Merika. That being said, he could just ignore the tow notice, get his car towed, and have the bill. Is that working better for him?
Actual_Doughnut9248@reddit
This makes 0 sense.
MaybE YOU should move to a new apartment
Wide-Entrepreneur-35@reddit
You obviously think that I like that the world works this way. I don’t. I’d love to change it but I keep waking up everyday to the world that elects Trumpanzees for leadership Instead.
MaybE YOU should move in with her and help pay rent. MaybE bOtH of YOU should buy A hOusE!

Just callin it like I see it. The “us and them“ game is one of the oldest games on the planet. It works so well that the military employs a battlefield version “divide and conquer. Hence the reason it’s used by religions, governments, political parties and special interest groups world wide. It’s played so that the truly rich and powerful among us can keep society’s eye off the one ball that matters for as long as we are fighting with each other, we won’t ever fix our real problems.

Whatever, betabrain.

But landlords are bad
Wide-Entrepreneur-35@reddit
It’s all bad. Every bit of it.
Granadafan@reddit
Sounds like they consider you a semi permanent resident at this point without paying rent, regardless of how many open spaces there are.
Spirited-Water1368@reddit
This. Leaving for work doesn't count. Staying longer than stated on the lease is the problem.
flannelheart@reddit
But if, like op says, he's not exceeding the overnight guest monthly/yearly limit, he's still a guest according to the complex's own contract.
f1ve-Star@reddit
This almost sounds like someone is jealous. My First step would be finding out who is placing these notices. It may not be the management. Ask them.
I almost bet it turns out to be some incel with binoculars trying to get rid of you. Ask your girl if anyone is extra nice in a weird way to them.
arthurdentstowels@reddit
Put your own notice on the car so they think someone else has already done it. Or get yourself one of those fake wheels clamps to keep in the boot and put it on when you park.
Failing that, make your own note as above but identical to the ones they leave, colour photocopy it if you have to. Then put them on every single one of the cars that are parked there.
jupitaur9@reddit
Is it possible that someone else is putting these notices on his car? Maybe they’re not coming from the office at all.
Cheap-Disaster4459@reddit
Make an “illegal placement of notices” notice and give it to the person placing those on your car
Outrageous_Bat1798@reddit
The ol’ Uno Reverse
Mission_Spray@reddit
Print a copy of the lease agreement where it states the guest parking policy, highlight the relevant sections, tape it to your windshields (front and back) along with your state/local laws on landlords having to be compliant with their leases and what happens to landlords that break their contracts.
Of course they could just easily change the contract and may everyone sign a new one “or else”.
So maybe just throw a piss disc into the leasing office.
OtherwiseBed4222@reddit
Find out who the management is and start putting roofing nails underneath their wheels of their tires. Eventually they'll get tired of buying tires. And maybe they'll move.
