Do you guys know any rental car companies around the airport that will accept a debit card

As the title says I’m looking to fly to Budapest tomorrow and I called few rentals in the airport, but even applying for full coverage most of them ask for 2000€ deposit witch is insane. I found one that asked for 500€ but to be paid only with a credit card because they won’t accept debit and the problem is I don’t have a credit card . I was planing to visit some friends in the city and a trip to Vienna for two days. Public transportation is not an option cause I’m travelling with my wife and 4 years old son.

I didn’t know that this is such a sensitive topic, so for any future visitor searching for the same thing this is what I ended up doingI got one at rentauto.hu they charged 500€ deposit and debit it’s not a problem, pick and drop us at the airport. For those of you advising that 2000€ deposit it’s not a lot, this are the deposits I paid this year with full coverage in Europe 100 in Denmark nothing in Spain and 120 in Greece. Cheers

It's not sensitive, you can do it if you want. It just really doesn't make much sense.

Google GM rent a car, and it will charge you a very low deposit and allows debit cards. You can also get them on www.discovercars.com Most here are recommending public transportation. Maybe you should look into it a bit more.

If you are here for a few days only you can use rideshare companies like wigo or greengo, they do not ask for a deposit, can be used for multiple days, and though it is more expensive than a regular rental, wigo has charging/fuel, highway pass and parking, where applicable, included in their pricing. Greengo does not include charging, they only have fully electric cars, but parking for electric cars is free in budapest, afaik street parking only, so that falls out of the question, and their smaller battery cars only have a pest county highway pass, not a country one. Both have dedicated parking spots at the airport, and they have their own apps too. Not to mention if tou dont plan on using them for a day or so you can close the rental when parking, and you wont have to pay for a car standing still on the street (keep in mind take your belongings out before ending the rental).

Cant leave the country with them.

Oh damn i forgot about that. I think MOL limo supports going abroad now, but i refuse to use them because the cars are loudly announcing a bunch of unnecessary stuff and it is annoying when driving. Also pretty expensive compared to the quality of cars and time/distance covered.

Good to know, thanks for your reply!

Believe me, driving would be even worse with your wife and your 4 yo son. Just finding a parking spot in the city (apart from the outer districts) can be a nightmare, then the hassle of getting a parking ticket, the stress that someone will damage the car etc. And the same in Vienna. The last time I drove in Vienna it took me 45 (!) minutes to find a parking spot in the city center, I said never again.
Public transport in the city is good, and if you really don't want to use it, take a taxi. And the RailJet or RegioJet will take you to the center of Vienna in 2.5 hours in comfort.

There's really no point getting a car in Budapest, you'll just be stuck in traffic and public transport is great. Vienna is a 2 hour train away as well.

Having a car in the city is a pain! Just take public transport. My son is 7 now, we have taken it basically every day. It is perfectly doable, éven if you are not a local. I see tourists with small children on public transport regularly. Also, there is a train tó Vienna from Keleti train station. Very convenient, I have taken it for a business trip. It is reliable and fast.

Cars are expensive so of course there's going to be a large deposit. That's not unreasonable at all and very fair, especially since you get the money back... unless you break the car and then the money goes towards repairing the property you damaged and don't own.
As others have said, public transportation is extremely good and safe. Why is it not an option?

Hungary is not a 3rd world country or the US, public transport is perfectly fine for women and children too. Even long-distance like the trains running between Budapest and Vienna in every hour.

"Public transportation is not an option cause I’m travelling with my wife and 4 years old son."
You'll be happy to know that in Hungary, married women and children are allowed to use public transport.
